Buzz: Coles Takes a Parting Shot at the QBs?

Rich Cimini updated The Jets Stream with some nice tidbits this morning, including a curious quote from Laveranues Coles to the Cincinnati press.

Former Jets WR Laveranues Coles, meeting the Cincinnati media on Thursday, said the Jets called back before he signed with the Bengals. But he made it sound like it wasn’t a very serious offer to re-sign him. Coles hinted that the Jets’ unsettled QB situation might have factored into his decision to split.

“I know I wanted to play with a good quarterback,” he said, alluding to Carson Palmer. “That was one of the biggest (considerations) in where I wanted to go.”

I was usually among the first to come to Coles’ defense when he was torn apart for the things he would say. But even I’m struggling with finding a reasonable explanation for his latest remarks. There aren’t many different ways to interpret that quote.

Of course, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he believes Clemens, Ratliff, and Ainge are terrible quarterbacks. But insinuating that he brushed off the Jets’ final call because he “wanted to play with a good quarterback” does sting a little bit.

Does he know something no one else is saying?

  1. Coles is trash and does not have the respect of any cornerback in the NFL..!

  2. guys guys guys. listen, i never hated coles. sure i wanted to keep moss. but look. the guy was a soldier. took shots, complained sure, but look around the league. this was a head ache. not a migrane or a brain tumor like terrel owens. You have to understand he just signed with the bengals. he isnt trash talking the jets as much as he is praising his new QB… with reason Carson Palmer. Lets not be offened. he left. hes not our problem anymore, and this quote.. much like many others, just seems to be purposely filtered to anger us jet fans. Take a deep breath. and see whos having the last laugh next year. in Rex we trust.

  3. I agree with JimmyCrackk- he is obviously complimenting Palmer- there’s no need to read anything else into it.

  4. I agree with JimmyC and LC. If you call Palmer a “good” QB, then Ratliff/Clemens are less than “good” by comparison.

  5. WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM A LOW LIFE.

  6. I still think our QB situation is one of the worst in the NFL.

  7. i just hope that ratliff can be this yr ryan/flacco and we will be good.

  8. Carson Palmer is one of the Best,Coles on the other hand is not! glad to see him go and wish we kept Moss instead. wish him the best . i would not be surprised to see Ratliff and Clemens Flourish behind a good Oline. look at Palmer who can not get anything done with his bad OLine.

  9. We no longer have to care what LC says.

  10. He doesn’t know anything. He is just a WR that is past his prime and looking for things to say to get people excited. I loved Coles and still will be a fan but lets face it, going to Cinn. is not going to make him any younger.

Draft a huge WR and all will be forgotten. I am glad we are moving on….

  11. I really have a tough time understanding why Coles is being bashed by fans on his way out. He is a good reciever not great but a top of theline #2. He wanted out mostly because he has come to hate the tannebaum front office. He wants a longer contract to assure his future, the jets didnt want to budge. What do you want him to do? crawl to us and play for minimum wage?

Is he not right? do we have a good qb? no we do not. If we do though, we can only find out during the preseason. Leave him alone(leave britney alone!!) and let him get on with his career. He isnt going to put up numbers against us because hes going to be covered by Sheppard. Nuff said.

  12. I like Coles, always have, read the ESPN story on him before the 2000 draft, all about how he was railroaded out of FSU after the shopping incident but the golden boy Warrick wasn’t. I knew he would have the biggest chip on his shoulder coming out and I was thrilled when the jets took him in the 3rd round that year.

In 2002 when he blossomed into the receiver I thought he could be along with Chad I thought, we are set for years at QB and WR, here we go.

Then the whole 3rd round tender fiasco and the crazy offer from Snyder and he was gone, and it was apparent to me then that he was more about dollars than success, and its his right by the way, he plays a violent game that could have cut short his career at any time, so more power to him, get all you can while you can.

Then the trade back to the Jets 2 years later, when his good buddy chad gave back some money so that he could get a little more, at which point it was very obvious his true color was green (not Jets green by the way).

Then the constant complaining about his contract, the veiled threats and agreeing to walk away from $6 million guarunteed.

This last move (signing in Cincy) solidifies it once and for all, Coles is in this for money, nothing else (like I said, its definitely his right). Cincinnati certainly has a better qb, no one here can possibly argue that, no matter how big everyone’s man crush on Ratliff seeems to have gotten. But the qb thing is surely an excuse, the Jets never would have shelled out those dollars for him, and whether or not we have a good qb, I know we all have a pretty good idea which former Ravens coach’s team is going to have a better record next year.

Enjoy Cincy Laverneus, instead of playing out the string every OTHER year, you can now do it on a much more regular basis.

Hope you don’t have any regrets when you retire without a championship. Thanks for the memories….

  13. What an ice-hole. Always complaining about something. Good riddance.

  14. If I were a veteran WR, I’d want to play with an established QB too.

Not that I like LC much anymore. I was glad to see him leave, and tired of his complaining and dropping passes due to them not coming out of Chads arm. But you also don’t know what context those words were taken out of.

He didn’t really say much. So IMO, who cares?

  15. he’s a assclown he act like the jets did something bad to him,all they did was cater to every one of his needs.i don’t understand him and you guys say T.O is childish.

  16. Meh …

  17. No…I don’t think LC knows something no one else is saying…In fact, I think SackExchange has been saying it for awhile…
KC sucks, I believe, is the loose translation….

SACK – Feel free to correct me, if I’ve interpreted that wrong.

    :-)

  18. Any truth to the rumor that he will be changing his name to “Uno Uno”? (judging from that picture).

  19. BBSP,

I believe its been SackDance99 touting the deficencies of young Kellen so often, not SackExchange.

  20. Boring.

Lets move on to more important issues like…

“How many steps can the soda guy climb during a game without spilling a drink”?

  21. Glad to see him go. He did well enough for us, but he was never really the answer. Hes right about our QB’s however. They are unproven. That doesn’t mean they aren’t talented or at least able. Good- bye LC. Good luck. Glad he will be a drain on someone elses cap.

  22. guys read in between the lines the jets say they are excited about clemens and ratliff this year but they are really excited about just ratliff they have a lot of faith and stock into this guy and i really hope he’s our mat ryan because i think he is better than any QB coming out this year so why not get T.O he can show case that big arm and we will keep the league on notice you put 7 in the box we are going to hit a homerun,we can put clauses in his contract that if you run your mouth or be a disturbance your contract will be voided make it happen mr t, what’s the since to have a super bowl defense with a lottery pick offense?

  23. this deal is all about the money and nothing to do with the QB situation.
He wouldve gone to any team who would have offered that to him.
It should be a big slap in the face to him that the dolphins didnt make a run at him.

  24. Let’s keep this in context. He’s at his press conference, he has to say something positive that will be seen in a good light by Bengal fans like “coming to play with a great QB the reason I’m here” vs. “I had $11M guaranteed for two years with the Jets and I wanted one more big pay day, one more big contract and I’m willing to play for anyone including the Bengals in order to get paid”.

LC is a victim of ‘player fatigue’, as fans we get fatigued with most of these guys regardless of their contribution. Except for Curtis Martin (and other guys who retire) name a guy who someone didn’t say “don’t let the door hit you on the rear when you leave”.

  25. T.O conducted his self very well after being released he didn’t blast his former teamates he wish them the best ,boy i wish he was a jet he will instantly makes cotchery and keller so much better. if he go to the patriots we will be talking about this for a long time and by the way rex is a no nonsense coach and will keep him in line…think about it.

  26. I can’t really blame the guy, I mean neither of our QB’s are proven, do I think KC will be improved behind a better O-line? Yeah I do, but I’m not expecting big things from him at all next year, he’s no Carson Palmer that’s for sure.

Judging from FA and our new head coach we are a defensive team now, and we are much better at running the ball than passing. I would have been more surprised if Coles actually kept his mouth shut and didn’t say anything.

  27. The quote looks a bit different if you unembolden it.

I didn’t see it as a big deal. Maybe he is just saying that Palmer is a proven QB, whereas the current guys aren’t (which I don’t think anyone could disagree with), maybe it’s a shot at Favre, maybe he’s just saying what he thinks they want him to say.

At the end of the day it matters not. If Mangini said he’s glad he’s not coaching the Jets because he wanted to coach a good QB, then that might carry some weight. This…doesn’t matter.

    (Or, alternatively, what Bassett said…)

  28. Hoz,

Couldn’t disagree with you more. Ryan hasn’t seen Ratliff throw a single pass in person and all he saw Clemens do was pass all over his defense in the 4th quarter in Baltimore 2 years ago. One dropped pass by Mcaerins and another by Crotchery against Washington later that year and KC would have been over .500 with that horrific team (no O’Line, no healthy WRs).

The Jets PR group was pushing KC the day after Favre retired that should also tell you something.

I’m all for giving Ratliff a shot and if he beats out KC then great, I’m totally on board. But come on fellas Ratty hasn’t seen one real bullet fly and KC almost “single handedly” beat the defensive genius we’re pinning all our hopes on.

7 games is not enough to make a call on KC.

  29. Why is everyone down on Coles? He has been our best WR for most of the last 9 years. He has been the toughest player on the team and has played hurt without complaining about his injuries. He gives up his body to make the catches over the middle and rarely drops a ball. He tries to get as much $$ from management as he can, which is smart.

  30. Personally I think there’s a significant difference between “proven” and “good.” Palmer is established, so he has that going for him, but it’s the timing of Coles comment that troubles me most.

I wouldn’t expect him to go to Cincy and say he’s not excited. But to say he wanted to play with a good QB AFTER saying he thought the Jets last offer was half-assed does make me read between the lines a little.

  31. Coles is full of **** don’t forget how much he wanted to play with Chad who is the nicest person but NOT a great QB. if he wanted a great QB why did he go and interviewd for the Dolphins.
he is taking a cheap shot at the Jets because they did not want to give him $$$ he is not worth!!!!!
    Later Dude.

  32. our team also knew we wanted to play with good wide recievers…. ass

  33. I just want to say he may be playing for a “good” QB but it sure as hell isn’t a good team. I honestly say he is out for money and I don’t knock the guy for that, but that is his motivation as proven by the Redskins departure he made earlier in his career and the demands he placed on this team last year. Unfortunately in the NFL players don’t want to honor the contracts they sign because they feel they are worth more…I don’t go to my boss every year and ask for a raise even though I’m their best employee and someone that was just hired is making the same as me. Much like the NFL I can be fired at anytime like players can be cut. Now I understand that they have a short career compared to most ppl but these guys also make in 10 yrs what people most likely wont make in 40-50 yrs of work. Its a lot easier to invest a $10 million dollar signing bonus than take 10% out of your paycheck every week. I will never debate what he did on the field because he earned his money on the field compared to a lot of guys but he is your co-worker that always complains and says they dont pay me enough for this s*it….He’s that guy…lol…sorry went on a rant there….

  34. Freeman24, I’d like to throw a bucket of cold water on your analysis. If Rex was so impressed with KC, then why is the organization split 50-50 on KC and Ratty, who is a UDFA that has only excelled in early pre-season games and who Rex has never seen live in action? Also, wasn’t it Rex or a “Jets source” that said the Jets want a strong-armed QB that can stand up to the Meadowlands winds? And, last point, Rex just saw the Ravens have their best offense in years behind a 6-6, strong-armed, straight-drop back QB that primarily handed off. Hmmmm, hasn’t Rex said the Jets will be a running team? IMO, if Rex closes his eyes, he sees a 6-4+, strong-armed, straight drop back QB leading the Jets…that’s not KC.

  35. KC’s arm is plenty strong. I really don’t see that knock on him. He was throwing 40 yarders with plenty of zip in the meadowlands in December.

  36. The reason Coles signed with the Bengals is 4 years @ $7MM per. He parted with the Jets on good terms. As for playing with a “good” QB, anyone that wouldn’t trade either of our QBs for Palmer is nuts.

  37. 99% of the league plays for money, sure they all love football, but most would not train 12 months a year to play for free. Not sure why fans have so much animosity towards any player. Don’t you realize that the sucker in all of this is US the fans, who are abused by the NFL owners from the day we pay for our 10 games a year (2 preseason must buys at regular season prices), and $12 for a beer and Hotdog. Wait until 2010 when they outlaw open fires in the parking lot and force us to buy from them from the moment we overpay to park!
Seems to be an expensive outlet to forget about the real world.

  38. QB talk has dominated this blog for quite a while. Going back to 2007, when Chad was pulled for Kellen. Every step of the way certain people on this site have been “absolutely” positive of the direction the Jets would go. “Favre will never come here”, was a big part of this blog. All those people were wrong.

None of us know what the team truly thinks of Clemens or Ratty, or Ainge, other than the team likes each of them enough not to cut them. We all have our opinions but the truth is the QB situation will work itself out.

Basically my point is that it’s pretty childish for people to mock others opinions of what will happen in the future. We’ve all been wrong before.

I think Kellen will be good for us, but I could be completely wrong. Just as everyone who loves Ratty could be wrong.

    Ban’t waite for the draft.

  39. When him and Carson Palmer are sitting around the Flat Screen, watching us stomp someone in the Playoffs — he can talk all he wants.

Our Defense is looking awesome. We improved over last year and we were not bad to begin with. Plus, we have the Prince of Pressure at the controls, in Ryan.

We kept our O-Line intact and i’m sure that we will pick up some serious weapons, before the season starts. We might even sign Leftwich.

    Talk is cheap.

  40. Thank you Coles for everything you did for the team, you were a soldier for us and you played through injuries. Can’t ask for much more than what Coles gave to the team, but it is time to move on, DRAFT HAKEEM NICKS!

  41. Well said. I think we all should be comfortable knowing that the best man will win. Rex will put the guy on the field who is less likely to lose games. That is all we need.

  42. JAGG, really? I was there and I missed KC’s 40 yarders in December. His December starts against Cleveland and the Chiefs, both in bad weather, were atrocious. The longest pass against the Chiefs was thrown by Leon to Wallace Wright for 36 yards…KC’s longest completion was 19 yards and he was outplayed by Brodie Croyle. Against the Browns, KC completed 2 long passes (a 26 and 36 yarder), both when the Browns were in the prevent and KC also had a redzone INT, another INT and a fumble. He was completely outplayed by his high school and college rival, Derek Anderson. That’s intestinal fortitude for you. Lay an egg against your rival, whose defense was, at the time, the worst against the pass in the NFL. Moreover, he doesn’t match his strong arm (which is overblown) with drop back QB ability…he rabbits. Other than that, KC’s great…for the CFL.

  43. Sackdance,

Are you sure you don’t like Clemmens. LOL

  44. Cincinnati has always beed a desperate franchise, which is why their jailbird players wear stripes on their uniforms on and off the field.

The Coles signing is as desperate as his quote. What’s next Terrell Owens – hahaha!

  45. The one Cotchery dropped against the Chiefs. He extended that play by being what you call a rabbit. It was perfect. Against the Browns he should have never had to throw the ball, but the O line couldn’t get Jones in for a TD from the 1. Derek Anderson also had a great O line. How can you tear into KC when Favre was a turnover machine and you kiss his butt? Removing Favre’s history and just considering his Jet year, Favre couldn’t hold onto the ball at all and he was on a much better team and a seasoned vet.

All of Ratliff’s preseason stats were on two throws to Clowney for 140+ yards and 2 touchdowns against those same Browns second/third stringers. Yep I’m ready to annoint that guy.

  46. Coles can say whatever he wants but you wont see Favre, Clemens or Ratty say ” Its gonna be nice not having to throw to a reciever who has lost a step and drops passes in big spots” Although I cant deny he is a tough dude, I just find myself disagreeing with alot of the stuff LC does. He was a good reciever but Jerry Rice he was not. He acts like he commands that type of status or respect. Regardless, it was def the right move to move on…

  47. Clemen’s had a 6% point higher completion percentage that Croyle in that game. Croyle had one drive where he gained 90yds and a touchdown in the 4th qtr. Otherwise he was abysmal.

  48. excuses excuses.

  49. Coles is a two-bit low life! A decent football player but not much more. He has a big mouth and we are better off without him. COLES seems to forget how many passes he dropped to sabotage Clemens the year before last. He helped cause the kid to lose two games that he could have won and finish with a 5 and 3 record with a terrible OL and slow receivers.

  50. wow, lot of hates in here. coles will always be a jet in my book, as well as chad and curtis. can you blame the guy for not wanting to stay in ny? we got no qb and we got a defensive coach…

  51. and kentucky, i think you thinking about mccareins about the drop passes. yea, coles dropped but it was mccareins that dropped multiple big ones, hence why he not with us anymore.

  52. Coles was a jerk sometimes and followed the money. Chad and Curtis were class acts and often put the team first.

  53. BTW don’t Lewis and Coles look hyper excited to be working together?

  54. Yea I have no problem with what Coles said. This is just stirring up the crap.

I am pretty sure almost every receiver that goes to a team with a good QB says: “I wanted to play with a good QB.”

  55. JAGG, bash Favre all you want, but we’re talking about KC and his 2007 starts were uniformly awful and showed me nothing to think that he is an NFL QB. Favre with his 22 INTs and 9-7 record was sent out of town on a rail (and he had just as many excuses from no training camp to injuries), KC with his 3-5 record and 60 QB Rating, and 52% completions is being treated like the 2nd coming of Namath. KC was awful and any belief that he can be a good NFL QB is based on his injury-shortened senior season at Oregon…if that’s enough for you, then so be it. I want someone better, someone who shows more potential and someone I don’t have to suspend belief to think will be a good QB.

  56. My belief isn’t based on college as much as the spurts he showed, while on one of the most embarassing Jets teams I ever had to watch.

Favre did have excuses, but he played much better in the first 4 games then the rest of the year, but his O line was better and so was his rushing attack. Even in our wins Favre threw a pick 6. I know he isn’t Namath, but at least I treat everyone level. Favre was a lousy Jet.

  57. Just a green guy,

You must be too young to remember the Jets from 1970-1979, now that was embarassing, the down year Mangini had hurt more because we made the playoffs the year before. Emabarassing is a decades worth in Jet Talk!

  58. Coles siged with the Bengals, what else good can he say about that team other than praise Carson Palmer!

That team sucks, management sucks and the owner sucks!

I like Coles and he will always be a true Jet in my mind!

Wish him good luck and lets move on!

    Joe. S.

  59. Coles did the Jets a favor. Cleared cap space, opened up competition for the no. 1 receiver slot. $6 mill ain’t nothing, in salary terms, and he and JC were cut from the same mold. So let’s wish him well, and find either a young guy already on the roster, or draft someone who can catch the long ball. Don Maynard, Jr. or whoever. I have no problem with Coles collecting signing bonuses like butterflies. Like NFL teams live by some loyalty oath? By the way, how bad can Clemens be? He was drafted in the second round, played erratically in his second year, but never really has had a shot. It’s time.

  60. Cabras- I agree, but I never got to see the Jets play on Thanksgiving. I was born in 83 and we laid a huge egg. Schott was so predictable and I was embarassed in front of my GF’s family. Blowing 14 point leads to the Bengals didn’t help either.

  61. So SackDance – what you’re REALLY saying is that I still have a chance…. :-)

(I’m Kellen Clemens, and Bubby Brister approves this message)

  62. You should never get embarassed because you are a fan, the players should be embarassed.

  63. lol cincinnati. dumbass.
