The First 100 Days: Day 43

vick.png

Just like another administration’s first 100 days, so too TJB will be keeping watch over the Rex Ryan administration for the first 100 days … playing it by the numbers if you will. Each day, we’ll try to keep the associated day number in play.

Day Forty Three

43rd Street — The northern boundary for the Hudson Railyards (AKA home of the former West Side Stadium). As great a compromise (between Jersey and LI) as a Manhattan stadium would have been for Jets fans tailgating would have sucked. Until the Jets make some consistent postseason runs, that’s consistently the best part of going to a game for me.

43 Year Old Leading Man — I remember going to the Bucs website during the lead up to the Jets-Bucs matchup. They had this stupid Flash cartoon of Vinny and Bolly both not wanting to start against the Buccaneers, telling Herm to let the other guy go. Winning that game over the vaunted Bucs was one of the few bright spots of that season … the biggest middle finger to the Bucs ever. Thanks Vinny!

4-3 Defense — Ryan is going to mix and match his defense. We know that the Jets look good in a three man front .. can Calvin or Bryan put his hand down more if Rex needs it and get that edge rush from the three point stance? Both seem to play better with their hand up. Where does Gholston fit in here? Can he stop gripping so tightly and get back to the basics.

No Good! — Doug Brien missing a 43 yarder as time expired in the playoffs against the Steelers in January 2005 Divisional Playoff Game.

4-3 and Reeling — The Jets were 4-3 after struggling past the Chiefs, they looked like a 9-7 team at best right then, so … why were we surprised again? :P

As Worn By — Roger Vick, Vance Joseph and the late Mike Brim.

WIth the 43rd — Jim Price & Ralph Baker were both 43rd picks.

Add your forty threes in the comments …

  1. im a fairly young jets fan

My first real feeling of being a jets fan was doug brien’s misses in the playoffs.

    that game still hurts

  2. Never forgave Doug for that miss….never will.

#43 also worn by Leonhard Peters

  3. I remember that game very well, it was the 1st day I watched a real football game, like as in I never watched a whole game in my life because I didn’t like the sport, but after that I never missed a Jets game with the exception of 2, but I will never forget that missed fieldgoal

  4. the worst was the 82′ mud bowl( afc championship) with the dolphins…i was 9 years old and still remember it like yesterday( well mabey like 26 years ago)….for those of you who do not know don shula purposely soak ed the field before the game to take out freeman mcneil’s corners ( footing)…and i did not help that richard todd ( interception king) was our quaterback either

  5. Bassett, from now on I’ll try to come up with a KC number to match…today’s is: 4.3 INT%..that’s KC’s career number, for point of reference the old interception machine that everyone hated had a 4.2 INT% last season…if KC starts, better have tackling drills for the WRs!!!

  6. Mangini and the Browns just signed CJ Mosely…

  7. figures

  8. Doug Brien left me emotionally damaged after that game, but I have to agree with John l about the mud bowl – that was the worst.

I remember going to school the next day and a kid was wearing his richard todd jersey. Felt like slugging him (but he was much bigger).

I must have improved by the championship game in Denver. I live in Denver now – and did at the time of that game – and my co-workers put bronco paper streamers, orange and blue baloons, etc. pakced into my office before I arrived mon. morning. (don’t know why they put my jerry garcia doll in a noose though. totally unrelated and just mean spirited!)

I even got a chuckle out of the gag. I guess I can handle gut wrenching losses better in my adult life. Having watched every game, save for perhaps a handful, in the past 25 years I’ve seen alot of ‘em……

  9. That Brien miss has more to do with Herm coaching us backwards away from the uprights. Ugh what a failure.

But, that win over the bucs the next year with my main man Vinny T was the best part of the next season. If only herm could coach better we may have had a few more wins.

  10. Agreed on the Brien miss at Heinz Field – Herm put the game in the hands of Doug Brien, our average kicker, instead of the in the hands of the guys we paid to win games – Curtis Martin and Chad Pennington.

The really bad thing is the only reason the Jets were even playing at Heinz that weekend is that Marty Schottenheimer did the exact same thing the weekend before in the wild-card round against us.

  11. I have to say, I can not agree with you in 100%, but that’s just my opinion, which could be very wrong.
p.s. You have a very good template for your blog. Where did you find it?
