News: USC QB Mark Sanchez to Meet With Jets Before Pro Day
There wasn’t much real news about players the Jets were specifically targeting at the combine, but Scott Wolf of the LA Daily News reports that Mark Sanchez will be meeting with the team before the official USC Pro Day.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez is expected to perform private workouts for the New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts before participating in USC’s Pro Day on April 1.
It’s probably not worth reading too much into since he’s meeting with the Colts as well. But it’s definitely worth passing along for everyone who loves the pre-Draft speculation.
How would you guys feel about it? Is he a worthy candidate, or is the 2009 QB draft class a weak one? Any chance he’d fall to 17 if the Jets wanted him, or will some wheeling and dealing be necessary if Ryan & Co. fall in love with him?
Picking Sanchez up would definitely be contrary to all of the “we want to see what we have here now” implications, but after last season I’m sure we all take the QB lip service with a huge grain of salt.
Special thanks to Leon#29 of NYJetsFan for the find.

im hating this , i dont like him as a player and im a USC fan
Not interested. I don’t see how he will add anything we don’t already have. Now Josh Freeman I’d be interested in, at around the second round, he has unbelievable physical tools despite his punchant for being inconsistant he is woth a gamble.
I agree with ramble…Josh Freeman’s our guy. I think Sanches will drop further than Rodgers did unless the 49ers grab him.
I’d rather see us draft an explosive weapon in the first round
Pass – what has he proven over Ratliff and Clemens? He certainly didn’t wow me in college.
Please let Maklin drop to us. DT or RB in the second round.
Would’nt want Freeman, when you are inconsistent in college, it usually does not work well in the NFL.
I would take a 2nd day pick on the best athlete in the draft, and a winner, Pat White, a creative coach could find a place for him to excell.
DO NOT GIVE IN!!!! we need a wideout and have an oppurtunity to grab a stud in the first round i am not sold on any of the qb’s in this draft let alone taking them with the first pick…. Jets pass on this lets bolster the skill positions and d-end
I DON’T KNOW WHAT ALL THE HYPE IS, BUT PLEASE I AM BEGGING PLEASE DON’T DRAFT SANCHEZ IN THE FIRST ROUND, HE IS NOT THAT GOOD.
Not to worry, there is a lot of smoke at this time of year.
If Sanchez is sitting there at 17, the Jets will get calls, we could get a nice, trade down deal….. Chicago is at 18 , when are they ever going to get a QB ? Tampa, can you believe that Sage is the long term answer for Minnisota .
We HAVE to go wide out here… People are saying hes a late round 1, early round 2 guy, but I love Hakim Nix. His size would bring so much to the table for this team
I just feel like his arm isnt strong enough and if they did draft him then what you are going to sit him for a year and let one of the other 3 start and basically have low expectations and are scrapping this upcoming season
Never EVER draft a junior quarterback in the first round. they just don’t work out
In order for a rookie QB, to be successful he needs a good O-line that can protect him and a running game, and a great Defense forget the WR, they just have to be good enough to do their job, not be a superstar,
Well we fit that criteria, our O-line is very good, LW and TJ is a great combo, our D got better, and we have Keller, and Cotchery is a solid WR, I’m not sure about the other guy next across him, and our D got better and it was pretty good considering we gave up in the 3rd RD, so if we aere to get Sanchez, he can be successful here, but Ithink we should let KC and Ratliff duke it out in training camp
Sackexchange, I’m a sack exchange fan, and I don’t like you. I’m just going by the same things you are with Sanchez, NOTHING. Some USC fan you are! Seriously transparent comment their hater
Sanchez is a great talent, he has so much upside, and takes control of the game, and the leadership qualities are endless with this kid, and hes a gamer for sure. I hope the east coast doesn’t get him, I would like to see him on the west coast.
I agree, lets not draft a QB
Drath a WR
this kid’s a stud, and would be the number 1 pick in 2010 with one more good year.
We could do A LOT WORST than drafting this kid, who seems to have the exact makeup of a big time NFL QB.
Now if our front office has evaluated that we have a franchise guy already in house, then we should go else where.
Like are you guys joking??????? If Sanchez drops to the Jets WE HAVE TO TAKE HIM! Only question mark about this guy is that hes only a one year starter. His mechanics are great, hes a leader, he worksout hard and hes got great football sense. I understand that we do need to draft a wr but I’d prefer to do that in the second round and get Sanchez in the first.
As for Josh Freeman, 1)He will not fall to us in the second round, we will have to pick him up at 17. 2) He was so damn inconsistent in college, that I have no idea why on earth you would want for us to select him. Are you not fed up from the inconsistency you witnessed last season by favre?
Our team has a history of making poor decisions in the first round. After seeing the criticism Sancez is facing here, now I know why.
Don’t see why they can’t see what they have now and also draft a quarterback. After all, with the Ravens last year Flacco was going to be the third quarterback on the depth chart going into the season until Boller broke himself and Troy Smith came down with the flu. It’s just not a bad insurance policy to have a potential franchise QB, and there won’t be immediate pressure for him to be the starter if they do happen to like someone we already have since if we do take him, it probably wouldn’t be inside the top ten. Also, to whomever said he doesn’t have a strong enough arm, well, I don’t know. He doesn’t have a Stafford sort of cannon, but it’s more of something along the Brady or McNabb lines, and they seem to do just fine in the cold weather. In any case, he’s far better than Freeman. Josh Freeman will impress everyone until he puts on the pads and they see his horrible pocket presence and poor decision making abilities.
And for those that want a receiver, it’s very possible that the Jets can sneak back into the late first or early second. Tannenbaum is a master at moving up and down, and most all of the WRs that people are clamoring for will be there in that range.
Sanchez isn’t the answer. WR, DT, RB OL. Nicks is 6′1 212. His size is a none issue. Britt is 6′3 218. Britt is just as good and will be there in the mid-second. I hope this is just a fake with Sanchez and we trade out of the first to grab an extra couple picks this year or next.
please no sanchez, trade back and take freeman.
We definitely dont need any more picks. All we have to adress on our starting lineup is QB and WR. Sanchez in the first round, Britt in the second!
O.LINEMAN O.LINEMAN O.LINEMAN we need one more
I see a lot of people talking about nicks size hes 6′1??? Kenny Britt is 6-4 and faster we need to get this guy hes going to be a big time player
It’s a capital idea. A championship caliber idea. Plus Sanchez doesn’t have to start with the KC around unless he beats the other guys out.
Freeman, an experienced guy that lacks consistency vs Sanchez, a consistent guy that lacks experience. Take the guy with the 1st round grade. What’re you saving the pick for.
QB’s and RB’s will be very deep next year. Why do you think Sanchez is coming out this year? Its because he would be a 2nd or 3rd rounder next year.
Well said Brett
How can anyone (Andrew ) say we have enough picks? Con you actually have too many picks. If we have no need this year that doesn’t mean we wont next year.
No such thing as a deep QB draft. You have your 1st rounders and you have your sleepers. Everything in between just has the overwhelming tendency to not work out. The fate of franchises have hinged on mistakes like passing on this guy.
4 first round QB’s next year minimum.
Did someone say QBs and RBs will be deep next year? TE, OT, OG, DE, DT, LB, and S will be insanely deep next year. QB and RB are two of the only positions that won’t. I guess RB is always kind of deep considering it’s easy to find talent at the position late, but really there isn’t a lot of elite talent there. I’m not sure where you see the QB talent though unless you’re considering Tebow a QB and you think McCoy will transition well with his average arm and option system experience. After Bradford, the only one that’s probably worth something is LeFevour and Hiller but I wouldn’t mention them if someone asked me to talk about top talent at a position. Unless of course you think Clausen or Snead (also from an option) will blow up next year and come out.
4 QBs is not a deep draft but it is a deep 1st round. And I don’t anticipate picking early enough to get one anyhow.
Bradford’s another Penington. mcCoy and Tebow will be great QBs. But I would say, if Sanchez is there, don’t bank on next year. Take your QB now.
Sam Bradford, Jevan Snead, Colt McCoy, Jimmy Clauson will have a breakout year.
Sleeper Pat Devlin, Delaware
If Sanchez is there at 17 take him unless a team calls the Jets on draft day and offer their 1 and 2 this year and first next year.
Sanchez would not need to start right away and even if he does he has a good offensive line and running attack to support him. Im really starting to think that he is going to fall to 17 and the jets will take him in a heartbeat. Is he going to develop into a great qb? We dont know but we might just as well give it a try. I know everyone including myself is in love with nicks but if the Jets trade up in the 2nd round then they might still have a chance to get him. Freeman was to inconsistent in college. I know he is a physical specimen but there is a reason why he is not graded a 1st round pick.
Bradford needs to gain more weight and he has always played in the shotgun formation. He will get killed if he ever decides to turn pro. I really like McCoy he reminds me of Drew Brees.
no we need a guy like sanchez to fight for the qb spot…. can we rely on clemens and brett? no
I think we already have our sleeper QB in Ratty. I saw him alot in college, tall strong arm and pretty accurate. We need to give the young guys we have now a chance to prove themselves before we go and draft a franchise guy. Don’t forget Ainge either. He just might surprise us all.
I like Murphy, Heyward-Bey, and Britt, and Robiskie much more than I like Nicks. But what will determine whether Sanchez becomes a great QB is the way they handle him. It’s already known that he’s a hard worker and a great leader and can make all the throws.
I dojn’t know but, I think we need a Wr.IN the first round and i liek the NC Wr.Dt need a Qb,lets see what clemens and Ratliff got
He’s also arrogant enough to deal with the NY media.
But what if none of those three guys step up? Then go sign an aging QB like Garcia or get an underachieving Leftwich? Favre version 2.0
Im skeptical about getting a WR in the first round unless he is a Fitzgerald,Moss, Andre Johnson type player. Trade up in the 2nd round and get a WR
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNwVfPNhYtI..mark sanchez against penn state
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNwVfPNhYtI
Joel, good point.Britt is the only guy that has that kind of potential at WR. Heyward-Bey and Murphy come from run first offenses and have high ceilings. Murphy will need a lot of time to adjust to the NFL. I’m also warming up to Ramses Barden as a WR prospect and Aaron kelly out of Clemson has nice measurables but I haven’t seen a lot of him.
all those guys are second rounders btw, except for DHB.
So I just watched the Rose bowl highlights and one thing really stood out. Sure he has the armstrength, size quickness leadership ability etc. But the guys he was throwing to were so much bigger and fatser then the defenders. That wont be the case with our recievers now. We don’t have anyone who can go up and get it consistantly.
bleed,
That’s not mark Sanchez’s problem. That’s our problem. And it’s been our problem for a looooong time. And unless the Jets brass can address that our team is going to be a good team with a glass ceiling in the playoffs this year. Defenses figured out how to exploit that last season and we were never able to turn the corner.
Exactly. Thats why we need a WR first. Britt is our guy.
Na man, golden rule, take the franchise Qb if you don’t have one already. If the jets really want Britt they can take him in round 2, but they’d have to move up because I hear the Jints are targeting him also.
idk what if gettin mark sanchez in the 1st then in the 2nd rd we get the wr from ohio state….but for the record i believe in brett
I like Robiskie’s size and his speed but when you watch him he’s not really a downfield guy. He doesn’t really get opend down feild, which i strange to me. But I like him,he’s polished. maybe he can open it up in the NFL.
i am not a sanchez guy but if he drops he have to take him because if we past on a qb in the frist round he always come back beats us good.remember mario every year he used to beat us until kenny finally beat and the next time we play each other he beats us agian.now there’s cutler we passed on him and when we played each other we destroys our season.and why do people keep saying that bradford will be chad 2.1 last time i recalled chad never won a hisman
igs
Thats why we can trade down or out of the first and still get him. Plus a couple nice picks this year and/or next.
I think Sanchez doesn’t have November/December Meadowlands arm strength. Look at his highlights at Penn State and you see a guy who knows how to play the QB position better than Stafford or Freeman. But, Stafford and Freeman have loads of arm strength. I’d take Freeman and, yes, he was more inconsistent, but he was on a terrible team. He still had an over 60% completion pct. for his last 2 seasons and he has unique size, mobility and arm strength. You draft Freeman for what you think he can become (his Dad was a player and a coach…good bloodline), you draft Sanchez for what he is right now. In good weather or a dome, Sanchez is the pick and like I’ve said before, if I were the Detroit GM, I’d draft Sanchez. But, for the Jets, I’d take Stafford or Freeman.
And, I’ll post this again…any 6-6, right-handed QB that can roll left and throw a 60-yard bullett is a guy that I draft and let the OC and QB coach develop:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1VogoHOrow
Stay away from Freeman. His arm strength/size are distracting people from the fact that he is not a very good QB. And I’m not sure how somebody can say that you draft Sanchez for what he is now, when the fact is, he only started one season. Just about every expert agrees that he has all the skills, just needs more experience. If he is there at 17, no way you can pass that up.
CJ Mosley just signed with Mangini and the Browns…
I just watched a bunch of J. Freeman highlights, the guy has Superstar written all over him. At 6-6 and 245lbs he has a cannon for an arm and can run. I would take him at #17, IMO, he has that much upside. The guy will be a probowl NFL QB, and we better take him.
Long time reader, first time commenter…
I watched this guy at the combine (I get NFL Network) and let me tell you, NO THANKS!
We should give Clemens and Ratliff a chance to be solid game managers. Run the ball, play D, move the chains. This team is built to win now, no time to develop a questionable QB with questionable arm strength.
Don’t discount Hey Bey from Maryland. The guy is pretty big (listed at 6′2″ but looks bigger), ran the FASTEST 40 at the combine (official 4.3, unofficial 4.26), is strong (16 bench reps) and is a game breaker.
He was a track star in high school and is still developing as a football player. He knows how to get YAC and take it to the house once the ball is in his hands. He’s a true burner, which would be a fantastic compliment to Cotchery. He also played in a pro-style offense (not the spread) which means he’ll be ready to play pretty much right away
Maryland never really has an outstanding team but when their players get drafted, especially high, they tend to be good players who are ready to play the pro game. EJ Henderson, Foxworth, Merriman, Kris Jenkins, D’Qwell Jackson, Madieu Williams are just a few recent players. Granted, Vernon Davis hasn’t exactly panned out (yet) but to be honest we wasn’t that great in college. He was a true combine star.
See some 2008 highlights here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyjaBWuo4zA
Lgs….franchise quarterback?……says who?
freeman reminds me of jermarcus russel
we can all agree that the jets have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, right? aside from the question mark at QB, we dont having any glaring weaknesses. i strongly believe that management believes this as well and will draft a player who can make an impact and contribute from the get go.
furthermore, tanny drafted kellen clemmens. no way he concedes being wrong about him by taking a QB on day 1. no chance.
I am totally on the fence with taking sanchez at 17….b/c i am an advocate of a trade down should that happen…
but MP made the point first….and its quite simple:
if sanchez stays in college, has the same year he had this past year or close to it… HE IS the number one pick next year over the other QBs.
so why not get him at a ” crazy eddie discount” at 17?
Waste of a draftpick. Then we’ll have 4 unproven QBs on the roster.
It’s gotta be a WR and it’s gotta be either Hakeem Nicks or Brian Robiskie. Both of these guys will make an immediate impact for whomever they play for.
I would draft Sanchez and try to trade for a WR like Braylon Edwards using our 2nd and 4th rounder. If not, I’d use the 2nd and 4th to move up and take a WR early 2nd
Have to admit im not sold on Sanchez but if he came back for his senior year and played like he did this year he is a likely number one pick.
I have to give him credit though because he ran the combine. He looked ultra smooth and confident with a real quick release. He looked like the most NFL ready guy by most in fact all the scouts opinions. There is risk in any draft pick but maybe they are eyeing Torry Holt and picking Sanchez in the first round. Gonna be interesting
Hey Sack,
I remember these same discussions last year about Matty Ice! Props to you! Lets see if you can get Freeman in here. I was not overly impressed with Sanchez during the combine myself. I’m suprised there isn’t much talk about Marino-RB -Georgia in the first or second just based on game day performance. I know we need a WR as well but…
Sorry- I think I spelled Marinos name wrong- thats why I qualified it w/ RB Georgia
Coming from the guy who called Leon Washington, Kerry Rhodes, Brandon Marshall and Marques Colston, I am gonna tell you exactly who the Jets need to draft;
Brian Robiskie
Fili Moala
Josh Freeman
Glenn Coffie
Now, that would be an A+ draft for the Jets.
Kyle,
If we could get those 4 guys that would be the draft of the decade, considering they all have 1st and 2nd round grades.
It takes a lot more then physical talent to be a QB in the NFL. Freeman is a freak, but I think he will struggle recognizing defenses on the pro level. Gotta take Sanchez if He is there. Otherwise trade down or out to get our WR, RB, OT & DL
umm no QB in the first rd…not this year jets fans.
what will the difference be for 3 inexperienced qbs to 4 inexperienced qbs.
most definitely the jets need to draft DL help and a WR in the first two rounds….
i dont know why anyone would disagree..but plz comment on my post id like to c what u guys think
Trevor, adding Sanchez is potentially adding a franchise QB, and if one of our other QB’s pan out we have the same situation San Diego had a few years ago with Brees and Rivers, or what the Browns have, which is not a bad thing. WR is pretty deep so we can get a great one in rd 2 and as for dl, we r not looking for starters as much as depth to spell our starters like Jenkins which we can get in later rounds, but thats just my opinion.

[...] First and foremost, WAAAAAAHHH!!! Our opinions don’t really center around Cutler whining about not getting enough attention, but more around the trade offers. All of the parties involved (the Broncos) seem to have seriously departed from reality. Two first rounders? Are you kidding me? That is more than the Patriots and Packers got combined for Favre and Cassell. Fine, Cutler is young, has a very good arm, and parties like an animal, and judging by our friend Craigers, Denver is a good place to party, but ain’t no one gonna give up 2 first rounders for the portly partier (233 lbs). The Broncos want two first rounders for a guy that was picked 11th in 2006. That would be some good return on that investment. People haven’t seen inflated returns like that since the introduction of mortgage backed securities (nice work on the finance joke). Once again, the fans are the ones that miss out. Cutler is talented, I would much rather have him over Jason Campbell. They had a chance to build a talented offense, but are giving up on that. As a Charger fan, he is the perfect player that you can love to hate. The bottom line is that Cutler isn’t going to move easily, and the Broncos are going to be worse off for starting this situation. No one is going to comment, or even read this, but what would you give up for him (especially if you are Jets fan)? [...]
