Barton to Cleveland?

Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns have hosted free agent LB Eric Barton as a free agent. Barton was the starter last year for the Jets and although was an able tackler, struggled in pass coverage.

Bart Scott makes re-signing Barton a backup for the Jets. This is now at least the third former Jet whom Mangini has hosted in Cleveland. Bowens and Mosley being the other two players Mangini has brought in.

  1. I am loving Eric Mangini right now.

He is using a moist towelette to wipe the proverbial a**of the Jets clean.

Can you take Bryan Thomas, Drew Coleman, and Eric Smith too? PLEASE!

  2. good for him lol

  3. Mangini’s favorite TV show must be scrubs…

  4. i wonder can we trade marcus henry for braylon edwards mangini might do that…lol

  5. The more depth, the better. I would like to keep Barton, but if the Browns are offering too much, let him go…

And, who the hell is this new Kyle guy!? Put a number in there, fella! …Lest I challenge thee to a duel.

  6. I’ve been here since the beginning of man. Who the hell are you?

  7. they’ll probably sign Schlegel next

  8. He also wanted to bring in Nugent, but at the last minute got cat scratch fever. Oh wait, wrong Nugent.

  9. There are some classic replies on this one: \

“He’ll sign Schlegel next…” “Mangini’s favorite show must be scrubs..” “Take Coleman, Thomas, & Smith too..”

I’m dying of laughter reading this stuff..

  10. i wonder if there sports writers are calling them the N.Y. browns.a**holes

  11. Looks like Eric continues to believe that well timed roughing the passer penalties are the key to success.

    Shifting Gears to the Draft….

Hypothetical – If Sanchez, Maclin and Davis are all available – which one do you take?

(Feel free to throw anyone else you think deserves to be in the conversation)… I’d have to say Maclin.

  12. I’d take Maclin of those 3, and I think its safe to say he’d be the best value at that pick, although I know the Sanchez fans will hate me for saying that.

  13. Nice JeeRee – I just watched the Sanchez highlight for the first time and I made me think about switching over – but all of the receivers are so wide open, it’s hard to assess if he can do it at the NFL level – I do like the way he moves in the pocket thought…. Also – didn’t know Vontae Davis is Vernon Davis’ brother (TE – San Fran) – Forget him!

    MACLIN – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzrltr66LqI

    SANCHEZ – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_rib5nD5P0

    DAVIS – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd3809mIlvI

  14. Im shocked that I havent heard that Vontae was Vernon’s brother. I would have thought there would have been more talk about that, but then again Ive heard the knock on Vontae was his work ethic, maybe something he learned from his big bro.

I’ll stick with Maclin as my pick of those 3. My draft board would read something like this.

    Crabtree
    Maclin
    Pettigrew
    Beenie Wells
    Nicks
    Moreno
    Heyward-Bay

Im only including Wr’s, TE’s and RB’s because those are the only positions I want in the first.

  15. I’d like to see them find a way to keep barton. He’s stout against the run and could be good depth to spell any of our LBs if needed.

As for the draft for once I feel like we can go with whoever is the best player on the board…..any of the WR’s would make me happy though I’d like to see a bigger guy (Nicks, HB) over another smallish guy like Harvin. Any further news on T Holt?

  16. DKnyj, if those three players are available at 17 and Tannenbaum couldn’t trade down a few spots for a first and second this year or a first and third this year and second next year, he will have suffered a stroke.

That would be one valuable pick to trade.

    harlan

  17. let him go, and bring brady queen, we need a good quarter back and his gone be…., come on jets

  18. Cimini is reporting that mangini has signed poteat. This is great news. Maybe we will actually have some db subs next year that can actually cover someone.

  19. I’d still like to sign Ivy to replace Poteat. He’s a sure tackler and a good blitzer.

  20. yep it’s on ESPN.com that the Browns signed Poteat. I actually thought he was decent last year but certainly replaceable.

  21. should the jets sign the safety from dallas, roy williams?

  22. Its funny that Barton will be most remembered by Jet fans for his late hit on Drew Brees in the Divisional playoff game in San Diego, which resulted in a TD and led to overtime. I WANTED TO KILL BARTON

  23. I was hoping we could keep Barton as a bench guy. He could easily be one of the league’s best backups.

Which sadly, it appears Cleveland is going to field an entire defense of.

    2009 Cleveland Browns [Starting Defense]:

    LE: Ahtyba Rubin
    NT: Shaun Rogers
    RE: CJ Mosely

    LOLB: David Bowens
    ILB: Matt Chatham
    MLB: Eric Barton
    ROLB: Willie McGinnest

    CB: Drew Coleman
    SS: Eric Smith
    FS: Hank Poteat
    CB: Brandon McDonald
