Buzz: Rams Taking Their Time Releasing Holt

by Bassett on March 10th, 2009 at 7:42 am

Although the Jets might be interested in soon to be former Ram, Torry Holt, it seems that the Jets will likely have to wait a week, or trade for the receiver before he hits the open market for the veteran receiver:

The Rams would prefer to trade Holt and probably wouldn’t release him until or slightly before March 17, when he is due a $1.25 million roster bonus.

I think Holt would be a nice acqusition, but Holt has stated he’d like to play in Carolina with his brother before he retires, so should he hit the open market, that will likely be his first option.

I guess it all comes down to compensation should the Jets trade for him. I’d hope the Jets could do it for a 5th rounder or something like that.

Would we really want to trade for someone who’s stated where he would like to play? I don’t want another disgruntled veteran acquired against his will and by the whim of front office management.

Anything wrong with taking a look at Marvin Harrison if a veteran WR is what we want?

According to Clayton, the Rams might trade him for a 7th rounder at this point.

I do not like this move personally. I am taking nothing away from Torry Holt, he is a fine reciever; Just in my opinion he has lost the step he use to have. I like when we build offensive “skill positions” through the draft. I know wide reciever is a difficult position to draft and that it often takes them a few years to pan out, but Cotch, Stuck, Clowney, and a young rookie speedster WR in my opinion would be a very good recieving core. Besides we are built to run the ball first and throw second. Look @ our O-line. A nice SPEEDY, and shifty WR core would compliment our running game and keep the other defense honest to keep us away from the big play.

Ignore what I said above. It was Rotoworld, while reporting on Clayton, that postulated he could go for a 7th.

Angel makes a good point. Let the Rams release him and see how it plays out. I’d rather not give up any draft picks. Also, is he a big upgrade over Coles? They seem like very similar players to me, and I’m sure he will sign for at least the money Coles got. As a side note, I would like to know if the Fins or Pats have an interest in him. They both need receiver help.

Can we please get younger and faster at this position?

  7. avatar mole57 says:

    charleyjet,

I don’ t know how much younger we can get at the position. At 26, Cotchery is the oldest WR we have right now.

  8. avatar Zartan says:

i,d rather move on without the guy.lets get this team moving forward with the mix we have and improve the next few years through the draft.

Kewpie to Charleyjet. Charleyjet, are you willing to add taller to your wish list?

    harlan

Last year around this time, about half the people on this blog were screaming for James Hardy as the savior because he was young and tall. In theory it’s a fine idea, but the draft is a crap shoot. Why are we so quick to ignore an older, but proven receiver who will immediately command the top CB on the opposing team to cover him?

The only problem I can see is that this dude said he wants to go to Carolina. THey only problem for him is that hes wont be a good fit, they already are stacked at reciever with Musin Muhammed and Steve Smith.

If he WANTS to go to the Jets, why shouldnt we sign him to a short contract? we need an experienced WR for our UNexperienced QB.

I wouldn’t mind seeing us bring in Holt if he gets cut loose (as long as the price isn’t too bad). We could then hold off on drafting a receiver in the second round (or even see if one falls late into the first and trade up) and then use our first round pick on Knowshon Moreno to bolster the running game. If the receiving corps stays as is though then we probably need to go with one in the first round

cant see holt wanting to play here with us. Why would he want to come to a team with zero shot at winning a superbowl?

  14. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Vinnywasthebest,

while Steve Smith is an elite receiver, I would hardly call Carolina “stacked” at receiver. Musin Muhammad is solid, and none of ther younger guys have shown much of anything. Holt would be a great fit in Carolina, and would be seeing a ton of single coverage.

  15. avatar Jetsaregood says:

    agree with revis

carolina could definately use another wr to go across from muhammad.

theres zero chance he plays here unless we overpay for him. this is not a winning situation for holt

  16. avatar Billy says:

according to Rich Cimini’s blog, the Jets have no interest in Holt whatsoever, they feel his durability is the main issue, very strange since he hardly misses any games?
