2009 Mock Draft Muncher v1.0

by Bassett on March 11th, 2009 at 11:00 am

Just like last year, we’ve put together our first version of the TheJetsBlog.com Mock Draft Muncher for this year’s draft class!

Before we see all the comments that say “what’s the point of this?” or “there’s no way (insert team here) will pick (insert player here) because (insert reason here)” … here’s the reason that we do this:

The only purpose of aggregating mock drafts is to come up with a sense of which players might be available at which picks, nothing more.

Discuss who looks like they might be available to the Jets at 17 & 58 52 in the comments.

145 Responses to 2009 Mock Draft Muncher v1.0

  1. avatar oscarfactor says:

why would the Chiefs take Stafford, a QB, at #3? Was this muncher put together a month ago?

  2. avatar FJB says:

    Pick 17 & 52 right?

  3. avatar ronnie says:

malcolm jenkins is the guy i want but we wont be able to get him.
Vontae davis will definately be there for us at 17.
davis, cushing and jackson will drop further down

cant believe heyward bay is that high for a lot of them. I see him as an early second rounder, hopefully dropping to us but highly doubtful.

theres no chance of stafford going to KC.

  4. avatar MR James says:

Picks 45 and 46 are both Kenny Britt

  5. avatar ronnie says:

oscar, i thought the same thing but i think its only an average of all the moch drafts.

  6. avatar Ryan says:

    OscarFactor….

    Read the post.

  7. avatar oscarfactor says:

Read the post. All the CURRENT mock drafts would NOT have the Chiefs spending the #3 on a QB because they have addressed that need. That’s why I asked WHEN were the mock drafts from these analysts taken.

  8. avatar Marc says:

If i was a GM, i would also grab a value pick on the offensive or defensive line. Even over a position of need, such as WR for the Jets this draft. Every position has its value enhanced by solid play up front, and teams always seem to be one injury upfront from disaster.

  9. avatar JD says:

What are the chances of Josh Freeman still being around at 58? What kind of package would we have to put together to trade up to a spot where we can get him? One scenario if Sanchez is still available at 17 is to trade down and perhaps grab a RB or WR with 1st pick and Freeman with 2nd.
To be able to get Wells Bey or Maclin and Freeman would be a wonderful thing, although it may be just wishful thinking.

  10. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

1st HAKEEM NICKS 2ND SHONNE GREENE!

  11. avatar oscarfactor says:

JD – how often did you see Freeman play? I live in KC, so I saw him quite a bit. While he has great physical tools, I wouldn’t rate him nearly as high for his game management/decision making ability.

  12. avatar oscarfactor says:

Undertand what you guys are saying about the “average” of the mock drafts. But wouldn’t it be clearer if the muncher just showed the player’s draft position average based on the analysts predicted slotting without also throwing in the line item of team/draft position?

  13. avatar derek says:

The dates are next to the drafter’s name

  14. avatar DSmizzle says:

Oscar, the purpose is clearly stated in the post as being a decent way to predict which players MIGHT be AVAILABLE at any given pick.

“The only purpose of aggregating mock drafts is to come up with a sense of which players might be available at which picks, nothing more.”

  15. avatar DSmizzle says:

Oscar, also realize that if they do it like last year, it will be updated as the weeks go by and new mock drafts are published.

  16. avatar Ken says:

I’d be happy with that #17 pick

  17. avatar JD says:

At this point,( great physical tools) is an upgrade over Clemens who lacks both the physical and mental abilities. I would rather have Ratliff and Freeman . I think that at least gives us a shot. Sanchez is probably better than both, but being greedy, I wouldn’t mind passing on him in order to get Wells or a WR

  18. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

I would love to have Sanchez fall to #17 and then trade back in round 1 and pick up some picks.

Would love to get a WR/RB and OL/LB depth in Rds 1 and 2.

TJ is 31 and D Harris has yet to prove he can stay on the field for a full season in the last 2 years. Plus he had leg injures in college.

  19. avatar Igs says:

So, i didn’t read the above posts yet, but San Fran renegotiated with Smith (smart because I don’t think his career is over yet), heightening the chance Sanchez falls. Wonderful.

  20. avatar ronnie says:

    detroit – needs a QB
    STL – needs a QB
    KC – cassel
    sea – hasselback gettting older
    cle – anderson/quinn
    cin – palmer
    oak – russel
jak – dont know if theyre sold on gerrard
    GB – rodgers
    sf – smith
    buf- edwards
den- cutler??? maybe they draft a QB and trade cutler
    was – cambell
    no – brees
    hou – wats his name
    sd- rivers
we have to be worried about detroit- but we’ll find out soon who they choose. STL and Sea are the main competition for sanchez

Dont be surprised if Tampa or Chicago trade ahead of us to pick up sanchez.

  21. avatar JetOrange says:

    2 impressions:
    1. I can see one QB (Sanchez or Stafford), Andre Smith ( his combine disaster), Michael Oher, and Rey Maualaga falling out of the top 16, I don’t see anyone moving up. Looks like Hayward Bey…
    2. I would really like to move up to the top of the second round, ( Our third and our second, could get us to Mangini’s pick in the second…do it)

  22. avatar Igs says:

-STL is okay at QB, unless they want a vast setback they wont get rid of ther guy – i forget his name right now – good QB.

-Sea will take a defensive player or crabtre

-Jacksonville is a defensive minded team but they may take sanchez, doubt it tough

    -houston – Matt Schuab

-Tampa wont trade up and Chicago has Orton, who I believe is a great QB waiting to happen.

  23. avatar john r says:

he does seem like a rex ryan type of player. can mix it up and even give jenkin a little rest.
while i want a WR, if we get Jackson i will be all smiles

  24. avatar JD says:

    re-ronnie
Alot of talent available at 2 and 4 to pick Sanchez there, but they could also trade down and still get him. And you’re right about da Bears and the Bucks. It’s going to be a dog fight.

  25. avatar john r says:

ronnie what makes you think the jets want sanchez, i have seem nothing that points him in the direction of the jets.
i think the jets pick up a vet for camp, but thats it.

  26. avatar JD says:

7 out of 10 mock drafts have him going to the Jets at 17, and they also brought him in for a workout. Although this doesn’t really mean that much, where there’s smoke.

  27. avatar Igs says:

if the jets are smart and sanchez fall they take him, point blank. i’ll reiterate that the bucs don’t tend to move around a lot in the draft and the bears have kyle orton. now san fran has renegotiated ith smith and they have shaun hill. it’s highly likely that sanchez falls – i’d say 95%

  28. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

The Jets brought Sanchez in to take a look and give the impression they might take him. I think that have zero interest.

I like KC and Ratliff better than Sanchez. He just dosent impress me

  29. avatar Brad says:

I was very high on Tyson Jackson- still think he is a very good player, but im now really high on Jarron Gilbert after seeing the analysis video of him from the “draftguys”. He is very strong and powerful, with a great first step to throw the O-lineman off balance!Would be happy to trade down towards the later part of the first to draft Gilbert- still a little of a reach but he looks great. In doing this trade, hopefully we will move up towards the beginning middle of the 2nd where we can draft WR Brian Robiskie or DT Ron Brace. If we dont get a WR in the 2nd, then get WR Ramses Barden- 6’6″- not speedy but a massive guy to throw the ball too. He’d be great to go along with cotchery and speedy clowney.

  30. avatar JD says:

    re-lgs
I’d buy that, but where does that leave us at WR. Who is decent that is going to be around at 58.

  31. avatar AlexandriaVAJetsFan says:

Not sure who the Jets will take, but living in the DC area I’ve seen a good amount of DHB. I’m not saying he’s going to be a great player, but if I were the Jets I would be spending a lot of my time learning more about DHB. He’s got the size, speed, jumping ability, and hands the Jets are looking for, but is it enough?

  32. avatar JD says:

AND CLEMENS DOES IMPRESS YOU! HOW? HE’S TERRIBLE.

  33. avatar Igs says:

maybe louis murphy, maybe robiskie, i’m beggining to warm up to Ramses barden, there’s a few guys. And pick up a better deveolopmental prospect than henry in someone like patrick turner.

Drew, what’s actually your knock on sanchez? I mean check out walter’s nfl scouting report. the 1 weakness is lack of experience. he can do it all.

I like Jackson a lot btw, but we put the cash on the D, now lets put the draft on the o…

  34. avatar Michael M says:

    Hey Bassett,
Could you please post last year’s final MDM and compare it to how the draft went? Could be an interesting exercise. Thanks!

  35. avatar JD says:

Could probably get Murphy or Barden with 3rd pick. Britt from Rutgers could be around at 58, raw talent, small school.

  36. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

The guy was surrounded by NFL talent in his “16″ starts. He has an okay arm. Not a big arm. I have seen him play probably 8 times. I have never came away that impressed by him. If this was a strong QB class he wouldnt even be a 1 rounder

I like the QB’s we have on the roster.

  37. avatar Igs says:

Really Drew? That’s the best dirt you could find on this guy? Come on. Check out this scouting report:

    http://www.walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2009msanchez.php

I left Britt out because it’s highly speculated that he doesn’t get past the Jints in NO’s spot, but he would be a great pick, comparable to TO, diva behavior and all.

  38. avatar Igs says:

And I like the QBs we have on the roster too, and I’m fine if Sanchez doesn’t fall and we go with those guys, but they’re just as unprove as Sanchez.

  39. avatar Igs says:

murphy wont fall out of the 2nd round. His issue is having played in Tebow’s option offense, not skill or speed. he has gamebreaker writte all over him.

  40. avatar Brian311 says:

i would love malcom jenkins falling to the jets at 17. having revis and rhodes as the cornerstones of the secondary, and from there being able to rotate sheppard, lowery, jimmy L, and jenkins would be an awesome force.

  41. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Lgs,

I think the point being given is that not only being an underclassman but a very inexperienced underclassman at that, sanchez wouldn’t be a factor next year or probably the year after that.

I would figure the Jets want to put pieces together that can make an immediate impact, not another experiment at qb….because that’s all sanchez is at this point….not established, not a “franchise” qb, not experienced, no overwhelming talent, and a decent arm at best…

Drafting sanchez would just raise more insecurity at the position and not really resolve anything….unless they bring in a vet.

  42. avatar Igs says:

    Wave, i disagree.

1 thing, no matter what your situation or how you plan to attack the season, if you don’t have a franchise QB, and a guy is sitting there in the 1st round, you take him, point blank, which is why so many mocks have sanchez going to the Jets right now.

2nd, Sanchez doesn’t have underwhelming talent, there’s not a single thing the guy cant do, tangible or intangible, not one thing. Experence-wise it just means he has to be brought along slower and with more patience, small price to pay for a franchise QB. Remember, we’re building a championship team, not making one.

3rd – if anything, we have a more intense camp competition and a guarenteed someday pro-bowler in said competition.

  43. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

    lgs…

I am not sure what dirt I need to give you for you to understand to not like the kid as a big-timeQB. You can show me 50 reports on this guy. I saw the guy play enough to know I dont love him…..especially at #17.

Like I stated earlier the guy is a 1st round pick only becasue this QB class is very weak.

  44. avatar Brett Justin says:

why would we take a tight end in the second when WE NEED A WIDEOUT!!

  45. avatar Igs says:

Well, i don’t know what to say to that…

  46. avatar Igs says:

because you haven’t hit me with any kind of logistical reason to not draft the guy…

  47. avatar The Chad says:

    Thats exactly what they did.

  48. avatar Igs says:

Actually Chad, i beleive Drew’s argument is that he doesn’t like Sanchez (no specific reason given) and that he does like the guys we have now. Nothing logistical about that.

Wave gave me a logistical reason and I just disagreed.

  49. avatar e star says:

why would we get shawn nelson in the second round when we already got a guy like him in dustin keller that made no sense bassett but i did like the tyson jackson from LSU pick though

  50. avatar JD says:

Alot of draft boards have Sanchez ranked above Stafford, I agree with lgs about not being able to pass on this guy IF he is available. Also agree that it is a weak QB class, but there is usually one or two gems available in each draft. We passed on Cutler who I think would have looked just fine in green.

  51. avatar JD says:

We could however, end this argument and take Wells at 17. Ratliff handing off to TJ , Leon and Wells might be a good thing. We could run it down the other teams throats and keep the high powered offenses we have to face next year off the field. It would also give us some security at RB, TJ is getting up there and Leon is free agent next year I believe. Having two guys on the roster that could score on any given down would be an interesting thing to watch.

  52. avatar john r says:

i believe waves point is the reason why you dont draft a QB this year.
with drafting a WR, there is not much different between college and the Pros. if you have the speed, and can catch you can be successful on any level. a great example is desaun jackson from Cal,

with drafting a DE, you have people above him that can mentor him in becoming an all pro.

the reason why I dont like Sanchez is that he has always been playing around the best players. he has great running backs, great WR’s and a line that gives him all day,
for those reasons i want to pass on Sanchez. i mean Ryan from BC had nothing and was able to be productive. i think that is why he had such a solid year for the falcons and he also had a great running back

i would much rather pick Harrell up in the 3rd or 4th round, than rolling the dice on sanchez in the 1st.

  53. avatar mehls gay says:

Gotta agree with Igs…Sanchez is clearly a good prospect… and i dont care if he doesnt have top noch arm strength, the best qbs dont havve cannon arms. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan , Drew Brees…. all are ACURATE passers, you dont have to have a cannon arm. I think the reason people dont want him is because new york fans cant stand to see a team rebuild. Which eventually championship teams just have to do. That being said i dont wanna see the team rebuild either! plus a first round qb is a huge risk, if he doesnt work out it sets the franchise back for years. So if wer hoping for a young qb to to be good we might aswell just go with what we got. Still have alot of holes to fill, need D line help and Ron Brace would be a great 2nd round pick bc big jinx needs a backup when he breaks down the whole team sucks. As for WR i dont care who it is or where hes drafted its all just a crap shoot anyway.

  54. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Lgs,

What gives you the impression he can do anything and his game has no holes? I can tell you, considering his arm, that he CANNOT make all the throws necessary, ecspecially considering if he were to play in the meadowlands.

His exprience can really attribute to his ability to read defenses, his accuracy is not all pro either.

If you favor sanchez from what you have seen so far and you like him as a player, I respect that. But don’t go stamping his ticket as a “franchise” qb because he’s worthy of a 1st rd. pick this year…that means nothing. And I don’t want to hear about him having fire and desire or competitive nature etc etc…if you don’t have that in the first place, the NFL is not for you.

The main reason he came out is because this years qb class is very weak giving him the chance to be first rounder and he would be able to make more money easily.

I caught a couple usc games myself and saw nothing special besides a another qb getting noted because of the competitive school he plays for.

All those antics you saw doesn’t mean that it will translate into the nfl, to be honest…it never does, ecspecially in an underclassman’s case….first round or no first round.

You can say “I don’t like the qb’s on the team” which is fine…but you can’t honestly say drafting sanchez solves anything or fills any holes right now….we would still have another unproven qb competing for depth…not even a starting job(there’s no way they would draft sanchez to immediately start over clemens), and also considering the fact he would have the weakest arm of them all next to ainge. Lol

Draft a WR, DE, RB or whatever….anyone who would actually be relevant for next season and there after.

  55. avatar gmlongo says:

    JD -

You said Britt was from a small school??? Since when is Rutgers a small school?

  56. avatar gmlongo says:

    lgs –

Not sure where you draw the comparison between Britt’s attitude and TO. Britt is NOT a diva…

  57. avatar Scouse Jet says:

I want Larry English, purely to get a jersey with English on the back.
For purely footballing reasons I like the look of a fair few of the next 10 to 12 on this draft of drafts after our pick: DHB, Wells, Moreno, Nicks, Jackson. None of whom whould be too much of a reach accoring to the ‘experts’

  58. avatar Pete says:

Did someone say Peyton/Brees/Ryan DO NOT have rocket arms ??? Sanchez will be nothing special.

If we pick a QB it will go against what we are trying to do this year. We need to pick talent that can play now and try to get this team going. If we pick a QB for the Future to “Learn the system” is dumb because if we suck then I’m sure Schotty will be gone….new system next year. Wait on the QB draft for need now…WR.

  59. avatar JD says:

Lets put it this way, the highest a Rutgers player was ever drafted was in round 2, by the NY Titans in 1962

  60. avatar Igs says:

-JD, not a comparison, Britt has been known to have some diva tendencies even in college, alteast as far as hearsay goes, not on a TO level, and not that would stop me from taking him.

-One of the weakest knocks you can have on a QB is that he’s been playing around too much talent. Come on. Either the guy has the goods or he doesn’t. The scouting reports all say that he has the goods.

-I also disagree with the idea that this is a weak QB class. Whether Tebow, McCoy, and Bradford were around this year, the scouting reports on Sanchez are all the same. The only creditable knock is lack of experience and that can be remedied by giving him the time to develop in your system. i def like him better than Bradford for arm strength.

-Wave, what gives me the impression are all the scouting reports. You name 1. Show me 1 where there’s any other knock than his experience… Show me the scouting report that says he has below average accuracy? It’s not there. That’s Freeman’s scouting report.

  61. avatar FernandoQ says:

it funny because the jets and the mystery team in this years draft.. Every one has a different opinion , it should make for an exciting draft day. My 2 cents … The jets dont pick 17th…..that’s my gut I think they might trade down, which might not be a bad thing… If they get a 2nd RD pick this years 2nd round is VERY DEEP and makes $$$$ sense!

I am pissed NE is gonna restock this year ! What a year to have 1 first rd and 3 second round picks! DaMMMMM!

  62. avatar Scouse Jet says:

Looking at the breakdown of the picks, maybe the average position shouldn’t take into account the highest and lowest positions, one off the wall choice can realy scew the stats in a small sample.

Look at Moreno with average of 24.58, yet Mayock has him going at 7, when the concensus seems to be 28 to 31.

Or Oher with 14.82 who isn’t picked in round one by Bancks or Mayock so gets his position boosted when the consensus seems to be around 10

Intersting excercise though and as Michael M said, it’d be interesting to see the corrolation of last years draft of drafts and the real thing.

  63. avatar Jay Tort says:

It’s amazing how stupid some people really are. You guys who are crying about the Jets taking Sanchez, get over it. You were probably the same fans who were crying about Chad Pennington’s arm strength. Sanchez has just as weak of an arm as Pennington (who I loved), not nearly the experience Pennington had coming out of college (he did win a national championship), and he’s not nearly as smart as Pennington. So why would you want Sanchez is is going to be Chad Pennington but not as good. Doesn’t make much sense when we have 2 physically gifted QBs of the future, we’re never going to know what we have with them until we give them a shot. So why not give them a shot and avoid taking a QB so we can fill other holes with our top picks

  64. avatar Igs says:

Sanchez does not have as week an arm Pennington, where’d you get that from? I posted a scouting report up top there and I’ve seen him play a little bit. He doesn’t hav a cannon but he has a good arm.

  65. avatar Igs says:

Bradfrod’s am is a little bit stronger than Pennington btw.

  66. avatar Dan in Ok says:

Your right lgs, because those scouting reports are never wrong. No Sanchez!

  67. avatar Jay Tort says:

COme on man, you have one scouting report that says otherwise. I’ve seen about 15 that rips his arm strength.

WE DON’T NEED A QB…figuring the most first round QBs are busts anyway.

  68. avatar gmlongo says:

JD – so because Rutgers’ highest player drafted was in the second round, that makes them a small school? Ummm…OK…

  69. avatar Igs says:

I would say that between a good 5 or 6 scouting reports on a player you can get a pretty good idea of what he can do. I usually go between walter, draftcountdown, profootballweekly, sporting news when it comes out later, and a few other sites where I can get free info. It’s not hard to find scouting reports. Some things vary. With Sanchez i’ve seen the same thing everytime: All the tangibles. All the intangibles; not a lot of experience.

The one that I posted up top from walterfootball.com is especially thorough for a free scouting report.

  70. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

bret ratliff is just as good or better than any QB in this draft….i would love to see a ratliff to heyward-bey tandem for yrs to come.

  71. avatar Igs says:

Jay Tort, can you drop some sites for me here? because I haven’t seen one. I know about his problem sometimes throwing wobbly passes, probably a mechanical thin gthat can be easily fixed.

  72. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

pete carroll said sanchez is not ready to go pro,so what that tell you guys?

  73. avatar JD says:

I’m tired of seeing Jet QB’s throw the ball to the other team.

    Clemens—– 5 TD 11 INT.

Is this what we have to look forward to? If Ratliff even has to compete with him, it’s going to be a tough year.

And my wife has a stronger arm than Pennington

  74. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

    lgs….

I dont see the need to draft a kid like Sanchez. He is not a blue chip QB prospect. His game screams of average to good QB. I think we have guys on our roster that do that that dont make #17 pick in the draft money.

This team should have a pretty good defense and we need some offensive weapons like a WR and RB to really make some strides next year.

Go check your scouting reports again. Thats why he came out this year when everybody told him he wasnt ready. He saw 1st round money!!!! In a good QB draft class ( this year is awful) he would be 2nd – 3rd round value.

  75. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

the jets have ratliff and clemens coming in for off season training we will get a better idea sometime this month how these guys are looking.

  76. avatar JD says:

    re-Drew
OK I’m sold, lets take Wells though and not a WR. Receivers are only as good as the QB throwing to them.

  77. avatar Igs says:

I can’t state strong enough how much i disagree with those ideas.

What the drafting of Joe Flacco meant was that the Ravens FO finally had to acquiesce to the fact that no matter how great their defense is, they needed to put some muscle into that passing game if they want to be serious contenders ona long term basis. That’s what I want. To me Sanchez has blue chip written all over him. But he hasn’t had the experience of a Flacco or a Ryan. SO fine, you handle him differently, but you still don’t pass on a 1st round QB when you don’t have a franchise QB on your roster. You don’t do it. I cannot emphasize that enough. And I cannot emphasize enough how there’s so few weaknesses in Sanchez’s game.

  78. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

If we had a good veteran QB (one that couldnt be challenged for the starting job) on the roster and not 3 kids….. I would say lets roll the dice on Sanchez. I still dont love the kid but I would take a chance.

In saying that we dont have that guy. We have 2 kids I think can start this year and do a good job.

Dominate on defense and control the line of scrimmage with our OL and running game.

Draft a WR, RB and OL depth early in this draft and we will be fine.

  79. avatar Igs says:

And let me say, i’m dying to have a hot WR this year, but the rules are the rules, take the QB.

  80. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

    lgs….

I read the same books and mags as you do. I understand he has talent. I just know what I saw when I watched him play. I never came away with the feeling that he was going to excel at the next level.Didnt love Lienhart and dont love Sanchez

Flacco was 3rd string going into the final 2 preseason games before both guys ahead of him got hurt. He had an okay year but where did he play any better than what I think KC or Ratliff could? His defense and running led them to the playoffs not the QB.

Again. I am not going to cry if we take him. I just wouldnt.

  81. avatar RK says:

First Jay Tort don’t go around calling people stupid considering your contrast/comparison between Sanchez and Pennington was as dumb as they get. Scouts and the media say Sanchez is a student of the game and extremely football savvy and his arm is definitely stronger than CP’s. Plus he’s mobile, from a big school where he excelled and won a national championship, in which he was the Offensive MVP, and during that season had 4 TDs short of the USC record all while having dislocated his kneecap at the start of the year. That all sounds pretty damned solid to me and I’d like a player like that on my team.

The Jets FO would definitely consider taking Sanchez if he was there and could possibly take him.

I agree that this may be a year that he got into the first round easily because of the circumstances but that doesn’t mean he won’t be a first rounder every year until he graduated. Saying he played with good players and he played well only proves that he will be good on a good team. I don’t see how that is a bad thing. Anyone would rather have a good QB that played exceptional on a poor team but a good QB is still a good QB.

  82. avatar Igs says:

But when he needed to Flacco was able to go down the field and now the last thing the Ravens have to worry about is their QB situation because they got Troy Smith behind him. They got a good running game too. Now they go and get their big WR to play with Mason.

I can’t compare Flacco to either because I havent seen those guys play, but I know their original draft grades and I don’t pass ona 1st round QB for them. You nail that position down if you have the opportunity. That’s just smart football.

When I saw Sanchez play he wasn’t great. But he had attitude and competitiveness. He’s a strong leader. The perfect QB for rexy to mold into the next great Jet. I love that. He had the intangibles. None of his WRs and RBs or TEs are 1st round contenders so the talent level wasn’t that great right? I mean Patrick Turner is a 6 round max. Rest I don’t think are slated for round 1 this year or next year.

If you say you flat out don’ like the guy I can appreciate that. But I’m sure you would respect if the FO, in doing the most prudent thing, took him if he fell?

  83. avatar JD says:

I think all Jet fans would love for Sanchez to be the “franchise” player that would fall to us in the draft, especially Rex Ryan. All head coaches seem to want to brand their team with a QB pick that is their own. That the Jets had Sanchez in for a workout bodes well, in that if they saw the talent lg sees in him they will probably take him. If not we are going to have to trust that they did’nt F-UP

  84. avatar Igs says:

Thanks RK for pointing out this guy’s body of work. Maybe a lack of experience, but def. not a lack of accomplishment.

  85. avatar RK says:

I still think Wells will be the Jets pick and if I had a choice between the 2 I’d pick Wells only because Sanchez likely won’t play this year but Wells may and there is always room for more RBs but there are already 4 spots for QB if you include Brad Smith.

Of course if the FO saw immediately in his workout that he has more than anything on the roster now he may be a Jet and may start like some teams do after a few games.

  86. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

he would be off the board at #10 sf 49ers will take him.

  87. avatar Igs says:

I don’t think it would be a screw up. Even if Sanchez flopped. It’s like the DBrick draft. Even if DBrick flops the Jets did what was right. I wanted DeAngelo Williams in that draft in a trade down, but the Jets did the right thing. Intention is as important as results for a GM, imo.

  88. avatar Igs says:

49ers renegotiated with Smith and they have Shaun Hill.

  89. avatar JD says:

Not a given. The 49′s could take Moreno

  90. avatar JerryB says:

Hasn’t anyone noticed that we don’t have a TE? It’s the one starting position where we don’t even have a body. Keller is an H-back or move TE and while he can block downfield, he is almost useless as an in-line blocker. if you want to run the ball (and Ryan does) yo need a TE that can move people off the LOS. The FA market is barren for blocking TEs. That means either drafting Pettigrew in rd #1 or overdrafting Bear Pascoe or Anthony Hill in Rd #3. You can’t depend on June 1st cuts anymore because everyone seems to have cap room.

  91. avatar Igs says:

deep TE draft this year. We can get a good all around guy. I hope they don’t pick up a strictly blocking guy.

  92. avatar Igs says:

someone mentioned Bear pascoe. l like that guy.

  93. avatar mole57 says:

I think you can get Pascoe in Round 4 or later.

  94. avatar RK says:

I’d like Jared Cook to be the TE on this team. He’s like Gates to me and can pancake people.

He’s going higher than 52 though so I don’t think he’ll be on the Jets unless they make a move.

  95. avatar JerryB says:

You can’t count on getting Pascoe after 3. It is a deep tight end class for pass receivers, not for all-round TEs or for blocking TEs. If you want a guy who can start, you can’t wait after rd 3.

  96. avatar Igs says:

Cook’s not that much of a blocker and we already gotta deal with Keller’s blocking liability.

  97. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Lgs,

Are those the same scouting reports that made tim couch, ryan leaf, joey harrington and co. definate early first round draft picks and possible pro bowlers?….

And alright already with the whole “franchise quarterback” references…ofcourse we don’t have one because we JUST traded ours away and the current guys haven’t even been given a chance. But just like any other franchise, when you see holes developing or age/injuries start to take a toll on your currently invested qb, you plan before hand….not a year after he’s gone.

The jets obviously saw this and that’s why they drafted clemens and also have developed ratliff…

And where are you getting this “golden rule” craziness concerning first round qbs?lmao…..teams write their own books to success…not following after what worked for someone else…since the NFL was created, teams have been doing that and nothing has changed.

Taking sanchez at this point solidifies nothing and just raises more questions…

For my personal opinion, I don’t feel sanchez’s game wouldn’t fit the jets mold anyway. He seems more fit for a spread offense for his survival in the NFL

  98. avatar JD says:

Please! No more TE’s till rnd 3. Been there done that, about 7 times, all busts except Shuler.

  99. avatar Justin says:

Anyone know why in the second round we pick 20th instead of 17th?

  100. avatar JerryB says:

Justin – They rotate the 9-7 teams. We were first in rd 1 so we go to last in rd 2.

  101. avatar JD says:

Think it has to do with Farve from GB

  102. avatar JerryB says:

Looks like Westoff has some pull. Izzo is an excellent gunner.

  103. avatar Igs says:

Wave, they probably are, and considering the position that those teams were in at the time I can’t fault them with taking the QB, and imo what was at fault was the handling of said QBs and not any kind of destined bust you may have predicted.

And those are probably the same scouting reports that predicted Matt Ryan, Flacco, Elway, Manning, big ben, etc, etc as surefire talent so some guys do bust yes, bt less in the 1st round than in the 2nd or any other round.

I get the golden rule from Madden, among other great football minds. You don’t look a franchise Qb in the mouth. I’m not gonna walk you through the ABCs of football. look them up yourself.

  104. avatar trevor says:

*if a guy like B.J. Raji slipped would you take him?
    would he fit?

*if you took Tyson Jackson in RD 1 would you take Jarron Gilbert RD 2 if he was there?

*If Michael Crabtree fell out of the Top 8 would you trade down for him and lose more picks?

***If you could pick a WR at pick 17 with maclin and crabtree gone who would it be?

*if we draft an early RB (moreno, wells, etc) what would happen to TJ and would leon really be a #3 RB?

*Is andre smith going to be a better player than we assume?

*if there was nobody left of interest for the jets at 17, would you rather trade down or take TE Brandon Pettigrew?

*If the jets had pick 1 this year what would we do with it?

  105. avatar trevor says:

just some things to think about

  106. avatar Joe B. says:

Here are some Jeremy Maclin highlights. I think I’ve fallen in love:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzrltr66LqI

I really hope he falls to 17 and the Jets take him.

  107. avatar JD says:

Just got e-mail that Jets have come to terms with Rams Tory Holt. Anyone else hear this.

  108. avatar trevor says:

i hope we get maclin too

  109. avatar JerryB says:

Can’t find anything on the net re: Holt to Jets.

  110. avatar JD says:

Can’t find anything either. My son who is a huge Jet fan somehow thinks it’s a done deal. Don’t know where he got it from but he doesn’t usually play fool.

  111. avatar Greg says:

Love Maclin at 17. I think he’s a definite no brainer if he falls there – especially over Sanchez

  112. avatar Pete57 says:

JD, Ray Rice was taken in the second round 2 years ago. There are quite a few good players from Rutgers in the league right now. Shaun Ohara, LJ Smith, Brian Leonard, and Darnell Stapelton. He started at G for the Steelers in the SB.

  113. avatar JerryB says:

Maclin will be long gone by 17.

  114. avatar Bent says:

JD – Holt is still contracted to the Rams. The Jets can’t agree terms until he is released which is unlikely to be for another week, because they’ll try to get a pick for him before they have to release him on the 17th.

I don’t think the Jets are going to be able to afford Holt. It looks like they will use their remaining cap space to add some depth.

  115. avatar James in TN says:

I think we should pass on a QB this year and get Tebow next year, if our QB’s on the team don’t work out. I hate the Gators , but he is good.

  116. avatar JD says:

    re-Bent
My bad. Guess I’m gunna have to beat up on my kid for getting my hopes up.

  117. avatar JerryB says:

If things work out the way we all hope, we’ll never get a shot at a potential franchise QB next year.

  118. avatar Matt says:

Maclin and Davis are my two top choices. If they were both available, I’d probably go Maclin given the Sheppard addition.

  119. avatar jetfanATL says:

    RK,

USC hasn’t been national champs since 2004 and that wasn’t Sanchez who was the QB then….

  120. avatar freddys dead says:

bj raji isnt falling out of the top 7 but if he miraculously did i would take him in a second
I dont care how badly we need a WR i would argue that we need depth behind Jenkins even more. When he wears down the whole defense goes down the toilet. Having raji and jenkins would give us so much flexibility. Dam that would just be really awesome. Im hoping that we get the other BU DT in the 2nd round. In the first Maclin would be a no brainer…or maybe hicks? its a tough decision but dont draft DHB lets get someone safe please.

  121. avatar freddys dead says:

man i just saw the walter football mock draft and its not pretty…the giants getting knowshown moreno and britt, the bills getting brian cushing and maybin, and the pats getting mauluga and english and jared cook….. The jets? Chris Wells and Louis Murphy hopefully that doesnt happen

  122. avatar 57JETSBLITZ says:

Maclin would be a beast out of the gate. (forget the scouts, wifie says so) His speed is unmatchable and would be a deadly compliment to J-Co. Britt would be a solid pick but we wouldn’t get the value we should get with the 17th pick. The issue is when the run on receivers starts in the mid to later parts of the 1st round we have to be in a position to get Britt or Nicks. Im not sold on DHB, yes a physical freak but like Vernon Davis and Gholston, physical prowess isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. The key to this draft for Tanny is getting that sweet spot were we have a shot at Sanchez and we can get a bidding war going for the right to pick him. But we can’t fall so far back that we can’t get Britt or Nicks. With the pick(s) we get for moving back we should be able to move up in the 2nd and nab a darn good RB. After addressing these two positions with really good talent, we can focus on drafting and developing the depth that will be needed on the O and D lines. Get the best skill position players in rounds 1&2, go with depth from there.

    Professor X out.

  123. avatar trevor says:

i think we should definitely aquire our DL depth through the draft. pulling 2-3 big guys would be real nice especially if the ofensive needs slip off the board.

we definitely would enjoy some big guys around jenkins…wow thatd be sick

  124. avatar trevor says:

what are we looking for with our six picks:
    DE
    DT
    OL
    TE
    WR
what are we not looking for with our six picks:
    QB
    C
    OLB
    MLB
    SS/FS

    On the fence:
    RB
    CB
    P

6 picks 5 positions on the list
    anybody disagree/agree??

  125. avatar Brabble says:

    HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKEEEEEEEEEEEM NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  126. avatar JesusRevis says:

    WR
    RB
    TE
    DE
    DT
    OL

WR – Possibly our biggest need, and probably will be addressed in the first round. Maclin if hes there, if not Hakeem Nicks.

RB – Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are a great due, but we could use a 3rd back if were gonna be a running team. There are a lot of good backs in this draft, and we should be able to get a good one in the middle rounds.

TE – can be removed if we sign Bajema to be our blocking TE, if not, we should draft a blocking TE late inthe draft.

DE – a protoypical 3-4 DE would be nice to add depth and contribute in the rotation with Ellis and Coleman.

DT – A big body who can play nose and give Jenkins some rest throughout the season. This is a big need in my opinion and should be addressed early.

OL – We should draft atleast 1 OL in the draft to add depth to our line.

  127. avatar trevor says:

sounds good to me, but i think the DE situation needs to be addressed more agressively. we need a guy in the first 2 rds to really lock up the de position

  128. avatar trevor says:

then our defense would be pretty nice considerign all the positions are covered well

  129. avatar Brad says:

    JesusRevis-
WR- I like Maclin, but my concern with Nicks is that he is just like cotchery- not too fast, great hands- how does that complement our WR group that needs a true #1 speedster that can do it all! I like DHB- think he is perfect for us- but I understand all the concerns that go with him!

RB- I think Rashard Jennings(late 2- early 4th rd) and Arian Foster(late 3- 5th rd) will be perfect for us to complement LW- both are around 6’1″ and 225lbs- good bruising backs!

TE- agree with u- dont get the this sites mock draft choice in the 2nd round- seems to be another guy like keller- but taller and average blocker!

DE- Totally need to upgrade at DE- besides tyson jackson(rd 1) and Jarron Gilbert(early to mid rd 2) dont know of any DE that will fit our needs- do u know of any?

DT- I agree that this might be one of our biggest needs- if jenkins gets hurt this defense is screwed! The only one on my radar that we have a chance of getting is Ron Brace(mid rd 2)- u know of anyone else?

OL- be nice to get an OL in a mid round rather than the 6-7th that never pan out to be any good!

  130. avatar JesusRevis says:

trevor, the DE situation defintely needs to be addressed, but we cant use an early pick on that position AND fill other needs that need to be met early, this is where our front office has to make strong decisions. If we draft Tyson Jackson in round 1, then we will have to go receiver in round 2, and then we may miss out on filling other positions. I do agree that we definetely need to bring attention to filling that position though, the only question is how.

Brad, I LOVE Maclin, but I know its a long shot he will be around when we pick, but we all know Tanny loves to trade up so who knows. I like DHB, but I have a strong feeling he will take a long time to develop. I see what your saying about Nicks, but I just love the guy and think he will be a beast in the NFL and maybe the most NFL ready of all the WR’s.

As far as RB’s, there are so many good ones so we should be able to get one in the mid to later rounds.

Im not too familiar with the 3-4 D-Ends in this draft other than Jackson and Gilbert.

  131. avatar Broadway12 says:

To me a franchise QB is a guy that lifts his team up to his level guys that play with marginal or less talent. Thats why J.Cutler was highly rated . Thats why Accorsi was in love with Manning because he played with scrubs at Ole Miss. M.Sanchez played with a near semi pro team and has an adequate arm at best . WE are built to go to the playoffs NOW! We need someone that can play ASAP! We can’t wait for a so-so QB especially when next year the QB class will be better. DRAFT a WR or A RB. Heck I’ll be satisfied with the Tyson Jackson pick more Defense and run the ball!

  132. avatar NickP says:

if we could pick up Tyson Jackson that would be sick.

  133. avatar RK says:

It was a Rose Bowl MVP not National Championship.

  134. avatar Joe B. says:

Nicks looks exactly like Cotchery on film. I love Cotch, but we need a burner opposite him, not the exact same player (pretty much what we had last year).

McShay’s out of his mind if he thinks we’re drafting a corner in the first round after the trade for Sheppard.

  135. avatar JD says:

Read a post by jetorange about mangini possibly looking to trade a pick for brad smith. it sounds like something mangini would try. would hate to see jets trade smith for 3 or 4 rnd pick . any thoughts?

  136. avatar Bent says:

I think that was an idea rather than a rumor, but I doubt Smith’s value is even that high, especially since his contract is up at the end of the season.

I like Smith and think he does contribute, even if he isn’t a good receiver at this time. Ideally, I’d rather keep him, but he will see competition in camp.

  137. avatar JD says:

    re-bent
i read your posts about the cap issues the jets have and found them interesting. considering all the arguments posted here about taking sanchez if available, i have a question.
how would picking sanchez and cutting clemens effect the cap? or for that matter, getting rid of clemens and picking up a guy like leftwich.
guess you can tell i don’t like clemens.

  138. avatar Bent says:

JD – Clemens earns a very low salary, so cutting him has little effect on the cap.

Whoever the Jets draft it will have to be fitted within the rookie cap, which will be about $4m.

I can’t see them cutting Clemens and signing Leftwich, but if they did, I’d imagine Leftwich would want a similar deal to the one he signed two years ago with Atlanta (2 years, 7m), which should be affordable. If he wanted something like 11m over two years, then they would struggle to fit him in (all else being equal).

  139. avatar jetfanATL says:

For all the love Brad Smith gets from people on this board for his versatility, he really has made little to no impact not only as a receiver, but as a runner and passer as well. If you don’t beleive me, check out his career stats

    http://www.nfl.com/players/bradsmith/careerstats?id=SMI080910

His true value to the team is as a special teams player and with the addition of Izzo to go along w/Wallace Wright I think it would be smart to deal him for a 4th or 5th rounder. We’ve had good luck w/the 4th round of late, and at worst we could package picks to move up and take a guy who can contribute on Offense or Defense more than Smith has.

  140. avatar Bent says:

True…but for all the hate he gets, he usually does something to help the team. He’s usually good for a first down run off a reverse and maybe a couple of tackles and a downed punt. Some players seem to go whole seasons without doing ANYTHING!

Get him the ball and he has usually made plays.

Last year, he hardly saw any playing time on offense, but when he had to step in against the Raiders he stepped up with the most productive game of his career. The only reason he couldn’t follow that up was because he never got the opportunity.

Yeah, the guys drops some balls and is the worst lateraller EVER, but he comes cheap and – even if it’s just as a special teamer – I still like the guy.

  141. avatar JD says:

don’t believe smith was used effectively by mangini, what he was going to do was to predictable, or he was brought in in impossible situations. think he has talent.

  142. avatar trevor says:

yea if brad smith was in miami last yr hed wouldve been productive. am i right?? think so

  143. avatar JesusRevis says:

Brad Smith is still a valuable player, dont give up on him yet.
