ABMD: With the 17th Pick …

The TJB War Room has phoned in our pick for the All Bloggers Mock Draft, so head over to No Logo Needed to see who the team picked, or bang it here after the jump.

Thanks to the many of you who voiced your opinion on who the Jets should take.  Since the commenters were fairly evenly split, we went with the steak of the Draft, as opposed to the sizzle.

More than anything, watching this mock unfold has helped us to realize that there are A LOT of good options for the Jets when they are sitting at 17.  With frontline or depth needs all over the place, there’s a lot of ways the team could go and make a great selection.

With the 17th pick in the 2009 ABMD Draft, the New York Jets select:

Tyson Jackson, Defensive End, LSU

tysonjackson

With spots to fill at WR, RB, QB and depth on both lines, it’s a shame there’s only one pick to be made.  Jets fans have had their say on TJB , and it’s clear that they’re conflicted.  The folks in the TJB War Room were a little surprised how the ABMD has played out, what with some players like Mark Sanchez, Vontae Davis and Tyson Jackson still on the board.

The Jets have real need to find offensive playmakers and with the elite WRs already off the board — but  Chris Wells and Sanchez still in the mix — they are tempting options.  Still with a player like Tyson Jackson still on the board at 17, it is impossible to resist taking him here.
Although the Jets have invested heavily in a defense (by acquiring ILB Bart Scott, S Jim Leonhard & CB Lito Sheppard) already this offseason, taking Jackson at #17 isn’t too much of a good thing.  On offense the Jets are looking at depth players like WRs Chansi Stuckey & David Clowney along with QBs Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff to take the reins.  With a deep draft class at WR, I would imagine that the Jets will look to target a player like Brian Robiskie in the second round, and move around if necessary to get him.
By the start of the season, both of the Jets Defensive Ends (Kenyon Coleman & Shaun Ellis) will be over 30.  Todd McShay called Jackson the Draft’s only “elite five technique in this draft.” Jackson could play end on first and second downs, and transition to a tackle in passing situations for the team for the next 5-10 years.  True, with solid veterans already on the roster, Jackson might have to fight to get playing time in 2009, but he’s a pick that would benefit and energize the Jets defensive line for the long-term, something that new coach Rex Ryan would relish.

  1. I don’t know about this one guys… Besides the obvious argument we need a big play WR, and with the QB of the future is uncertain – at some point you have to think that Tanny won’t want one side of the ball taking up all the cap room no?

  2. Bwuh. I just spent, like, 15 minutes coming up with a well constructed argument as to why we should take Sanchez. Too little too late I suppose.

  3. last year flacco signed a $30 million 8.75 guarantee deal with the 18th pick .. that might be something the jets use as a reference. 6 million for a frontline starter for four of the next five years at a critical position for the team?

if jackson was off the board, i’d go offense, but for a guy who’s slated to go between 10-15 to be on the board at that point, it was too good to pass up a big need for this team over the next five years

  4. sorry harry! I like sanchez, but to have just one year as a collegiate starter is a shaky prospect. you might as well start brett ratliff in that case.

  5. I’ve been beging for a DE all offseason and although I’m not satisfied- at least they addressed it somewhat with Douglas. Depth is important and they have filled that void. I do however, think we need a higher tier player there but that doesn’t look like it will happen.

Hopefully, Rex can make the most out of Gholston, the addition of Scott will make Pace and Thomas better and our added secondary pieces can help force ‘cover’ sacks and pressure.

All that being said, Jackson is the wrong selection here. He’s very very very overrated, in part because he is the only true end with upper tier type talent. And I think because of that, he has slid up the boards 15-20 spots before he should really go.

We have addressed needs on defense. And although I would like a younger, starting caliber End- we have filled some depth issues on the DL and I think we can get a guy like Moala in Rd 3. With those moves and some talent available in later rounds, this would be a reach and a mistake at that.

Go grab a Wr. Sure, there is a lot of talent but Nicks will most likely be the best athlete at # 17. And although there is an array at the position- it would be a major dropoff to Rd 2. With it being a need, good value and possibly the best athlete- I can’t see passing on Nicks here.

The Nicks, Duke Robinson, Moala as the first 3 picks for the Jets is the best possible scenario. I think d 1 and 3 are very likely, with Duke being a question mark on being there in Rd 2. Either way, they could still go OL depth and get a RB, DB and DE later.

I’m all for still signing a DE although it becomes less and less likely. But picking Jackson is not the right move and it’s one I hope the Jets don’t make.

The 3 biggest mistakes they can make are taking, Sanchez, Harvin, or Jackson. If any of those guys come to us at 17- well, the draft is shot.

Go gets Nicks- give KC or Ratliff some weapons. Sure, Keller and Cotch are nice and Leon is versatile as they come. But with an unproven guy, the more the better. They can go defense at every other pick in the draft (Minus maybe 1 OL) but get a playmaker at 17. I would take Heywerd Bey as well but I favor Nicks.

    Please no Tyson Jackson.

  6. I just want the jets to get good value in the 1st 2 rds. This draf has value all around and some teams will get lucky.

  7. Just to follow up on my comment, I took some numbers from Jason’s http://www.nyjetscap.com and did some math…

Cap Number for Offensive Players about – $41.9 Million

Cap Number for Defensive Players about – $66.6 Million

(This is not counting the K, P and LS… )

The question is – can we win spending 61% on one side of the ball? I’d be curious to know where this is for the last 5 super bowl teams. If we added Jackson – it would be closer to 64% (less any Offensive players drafted later for much less money).

  8. I dont get why we would want to draft Tyson Jackson in the 1st when we have more immediate needs to address. We have no respectable wide recievers outside of Cotchery. We wont be able to run the ball against 8-9 man fronts. We need someone who will at least make the defense keep an eye on, and spread the defense a little bit. This being said, Nicks in the first round, and Jarron Gilbert who has more upside than Jackson, in my opinion, and much better pass rushing ability, which is what we actually need. Kenyon Coleman does everything tyson jackson would do for us which is stop the run. I also like Shonn Greene in the 2nd but theres talented RB’s to be had in later rounds.

  9. i meant to make jarron gilbert my choice for second round, if that wasnt clear

  10. DK- agreed. There are still needs on defense, especially on the D-Line but we passed on some opportunities there, no need to go and draft a ‘reach’ in my opinion in Rd 1.

There will be value in later rounds and guys who can play effectively if we draft properly.

Address the offense with Rd 1.

  11. Lj- great post. Nicks has to be the player and there are able run stopping end/ tackles that will be available later. Also, projects like Gilbert do provide more upside. I’m not sure I’d go to him Rd 2 but I do see yor point and it’s on track with how the Front Office should be thinking.

Passing on a Wr- especially Nicks here would be a big mistake.

  12. With the 17th pick the jets trade down and take Jarron Gilbert, San Jose State (6-5, 287).

    #90 if you watch

  13. What were the final poll numbers?

  14. It doesn’t make any sense to draft anything other then WR first. Thats absolutely what we need….amongst other things. If we have the chance to get a 6′3 WR , we should take him.

  15. Big mistake.

You passed on not only players that filled bigger needs but also guys that were better value at positions that are bigger needs.

  16. sigh…..

What a pathetic attempt to occupy ourselves when there is no football on TV?

  17. With the 17th pick…The Denver Broncos select Mark Sanchez. Because we need to trade for Cutler now. It sounds like he is definitely available. The owner just supported McDaniels and criticized Cutlers behavior. He is a goner and for some reason the Jets are going to sit back here partly because of how poorly the Favre situation turned out. I really hope they at least get into this.

  18. Well, at least you guys didn’t take Freeman.

  19. Dude! Despite Jackson being a solid pick, he would,t be an immediate impact…. if you wanted immediate impact probability and statistics dictates a veterans (free agency, etc)….Thank god you didn’t pick Davis…..He’s hyped like Leon Hall and inconsistent like Deangelo Hall…Looks like an Ahmad Caroll type to me. If the Jets want to win now, Sanchez would,t do it. Not much experience and not at the level of Matt Ryan. Flacco looked liked a better prospect considering where he came from. USC is a big name school…and I don’t expect someone like Pete Carrol with his integrity to be outright blatant in public to say he’s not ready…you know what that means for Freeman. Heward-Bey seems like a safer pick than the rest, even Britt but that may be a reach…our situation is tricky

  20. i love the pick guys hopefully we could steal a wr in the 2nd……..also what is it with everybody and britt, sanchez …..britts at best an average number 2 and sanchez is as qualified for a starting job as ratty

  21. By the way, about Hakeem Nicks…has any one seen his lips….not be stereotypical….looks like ganja to me. If anyone’s offended I could send you a picture of myself. I’m multiracial, which includes his ethnicity…I’m just saying….I had a similar awkward feeling about Marsh. Lynch

  22. To tommyfromsi… Remember Brandon Marshall….Britt is the closest thing. Marshall didn’t run even a low 4.3 … He’s just a great one….Briit has that quality with a better Quarterback.

  23. Jackson won’t be there at 17; he won’t get past the Broncos. Plus, AJ Smith taking an OL?!? No way.

  24. Unfortunately I don’t think Jackson will be there either SD99. Its a cliche and grows increasingly hard to do, but if we could trade down to the mid to late 20s there will be little to no talent drop off.

  25. Sounds like Rex and Tanny are on my wave length (from Hutch):

On Monday, Freeman will have a chalk talk with Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and on Tuesday, he’ll work out for coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Schottenheimer. it’s unknown where the interview/workout will take place.

Freeman, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior, is shooting up the charts after an impressive showing at the NFL Combine and at Kansas State Pro Day. He has a big arm and is mobile.

As I’ve said, I think the Jets are fully prepared to go with either Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff at quarterback, but if Freeman falls to them at 17th overall it’s unlikely they’ll pass him up.

  26. Ive come to the conclusion that I wont be happy no matter who the Jets pick at 17 because I want that draft pick to be part of a package to trade for Jay Cutler.

  27. SackDance, whats more unlikely, the Jets passing on Freeman, or Freeman being drafted before the Jets pick? You say it is unlikely they will pass him up, but I think it is much more unlikely that anyone will draft him before 17.

  28. The one thing that scares me about Tyson Jackson is his inability to make the sure tackle. He’s a bit slow, but I see him providing more of an inside pass rush for the Jets, which would help Ellis be more effective, and in turn, make the linebackers better as well.

Tyson Jackson would be a great pick, but are we sure we can get someone like Fili Moala in the 3rd round?

  29. Jesus, that’s Hutch from the Star-Ledger saying that it’s unlikely the Jets will pass on Freeman at 17.

  30. Sorry Sack, just noticed it was quoted from Hutch and not your input. I still think thats a weird thing to say, since I doubt Freeman would be taken before 17.

  31. How in the world do we not at least offer our first round pick for Cutler?

Who are we going to get at 17 that is going to be better then Cutler?

  32. I seem to be in the distinct minority in that I don’t have Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez sitting there waiting for the Jets to snatch him up. But I’m OK with that. Believe it or not, I think New York has more confidence in the untested Brett Ratliff than most folks know. Having lost Laveranues Coles, New York should be in the market for a receiver whose 4.3 speed is capable of stretching the field opposite the steady Jerricho Cotchery. Bey is a good one, no doubt. He in fact reeled off a 4.30-second 40 at the recent combine workouts, the FASTEST not only among the fast wideout class but among ALL combine participants. He also had a 38.5″ vertical jump, fifth among wideouts, a 10′6″ broad jump (tied for fifth) and a 6.80-second three-cone drill (tied for eight

  33. I think the Jets have to at least make an attempt for Cutler. He’s only 25, and a pro bowl QB to boot. He’s got a long career ahead of him, and if there is any possibility, than you’ve got to take that shot. Whether or not they will get him remains to be seen, but take the shot.

  34. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805

MLB Matt- it looks like we might get a chance to go after Cutler after all…

  35. Exactly.

    Young? Check!
    Somewhat mobile? Check!
Cannon arm to cut through the winds of the Meadowlands?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48p0wOeYkY4 CHECK!

    Franchise QB potential? Check!

And we want who at 17? Get Cutler and then draft a WR in round 2.

  36. I think I just realized that McDaniels might never trade him to us.

  37. Tyson Jackson is an excellent pick, basset.

  38. McDaniels might never trade him to us? Why? Because Bill Belicheck screwed him over by not being willing to trade him Matt Cassel? Oh, okay.

  39. Ummmmm what?

Because he was a Patriot and is loyal to Bellichick and despises the Jets?

  40. i think the tyson jackson pick at #17 is a good pick. If u wanna be a championship team u start with the line on both sides of the ball and than u work your way out so good pick the jets could always get a skill a WR or RB later in the draft.

  41. all i have to say is we are going to regret not taking heyward bey if he’s there and we pass on him.

  42. More than 75% of the mocks have Jackson being picked before 17(I don’t see why). Shouldn’t we come up with a more realistic pick?

Detroit has 2 picks in first? Dallas’ for Williams
If they want Cutler they should be able to work it out.

Freeman is shooting up the draft boards but he’s a project.

I still would like Wells but would settle for Maclin

  43. Greeny just said on Mike and Mike he hopes Cutler will go to Cleveland for Anderson and then they can trade Brady Quinn to us. I don’t know if I want Quinn but that’s an interesting thought…

  44. The problem with the poll is that only one DE was available while there were several RBs and WRs to diliute those choices, I haven’t seen the final poll results, but I’m sure there were more votes for RB or WR then there were for DE.

  45. Would hate this pick……I like 2 players better than Jackson at DE that we could get in the 2nd round.

If we cant the the big WR at 17 go get Beenie Wells and just wear teams down with TJ/Wells and then hit the homerun with Leon!!!

  46. For all you defensive minded people out there, how about this:

We package #17 with Thomas to try and trade up with Houston who needs a DE and snag Clay Mathews, who can play all the LB positions and possibly DE also. He is very very quick off the ball and may actually be able to get to the QB.

  47. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/03/15/union/index.html

Good news: King sees the Jets as a possible destination for Cutler. Bad news: He for some reason sees the Broncos as a better team than the Jets

  48. Yea Drew: EARTH EARTH AND LIGHTNING

  49. I think you guys choked BIG TIME on this one. The JETS are going Offense and they are going RB. Can’t you understand that the team of Jones and Leon is only two and the JETS were lucky they had no injuries last year to their RBs. We need a 3rd RB. RB would have been my choice here and will be the JETS choice.

  50. Sanchez or Beanie Wells and trade up to secure Robiskie in round 2!

Robiskie might be the 3rd best WR in the draft, and in my estimation (based upon watching him in college and confirmed by many draft pundits), he might make the earliest impact of any WR in this draft, because he is a student of the game.

Check out his highlights on YouTube. Very solid athlete and a great football player.

  51. I don’t find any quarterback in the draft this year tempting.

I appreciate that at this moment Kellen Clemens has no value in thee eyes of other franchises or most fans.

But I suspect that by the middle of the season that this evaluation will have changed …substantially.

AND-if it hasn’t…that’s because Mr.Ratliff has performed even better.

I do not think that Mr.’s Sanchez or Freeman are any more credentialed than Mr. Clemens was at their age.

Mr. Clemens simply had the misfortune of having an injury in his senior year which reduced his draft position.

Also I would like to mention that Mr. Clemens as a wide-eyed rookie did as well or slightly better as the experienced and very savvy Mr.Pennington when he was asked to play behind Mr. Adrian Clarke at left guard.

Why say this? We don’t need to waste picks on stockpiling quarterbacks. Mr.Clemens is a least the equal of ability to any Quarterback in the draft this year and has had many years time to have ripened on the vine in this system watching to very different and quite successful Quarterbacks play in front of him.

I’m not predicting Mr.Clemens to go to the Probowl this year.I simply think that he will win the job and do well…

Which is why we don’t need more QBs!

  52. Gregory Rasputin:

I think it is a little optimistic to say that the only way Clemens does not pan out as a legitimate NFL starter is if Ratliff is even better!

  53. We should certainly seriously consider a trade for Cutler…the problem is, we won’t be alone in that. There are other teams, with better draft picks that need QBs. It would have to be a creative trade and most likely whoever gets him, will be overpaying. That said…the kid might be worth it.

  54. Editor – I think Bassett is using the royal “we”…I know I had no input into the selection (although I think he knows that if he’d asked me, I would have said I don’t know).

Still, the 3rd running back touched the ball seven times last year (for 13 yards). Are you sure you want to use a 3rd round pick on someone that might have next to no effect on the season if there are no injuries again (especially with Leon’s increased role)? Might be a good pick for next year, but maybe the RB class will be stronger next year too. Not ruling it out – just playing devil’s advocate.

“Mr. Clemens simply had the misfortune of having an injury in his senior year which reduced his draft position.”

I dispute this. He was never discussed as a potential first rounder before getting hurt and was actually viewed as a mid-rounder before the experts interrogated film in March/April and his stock began to rise.

If anything, maybe the injury helped him, by limiting his total number of bad mistakes for the year and preventing the end-of-season downturn often suffered by college QB’s as teams get more film on their offense during the season (eg Matt Ryan).

  55. I’d be livid if we picked a DE at 17. QB or WR all the way.

I have a feeling, though, that I’ll be seriously disappointed come draft day.

  56. i dont particularly want cutler – but as a reference point, the pats traded cassel and vrabel for a 2nd rounder. we should not trade #17 for cutler – who may be a better player and has a longer track record – but he is clearly a headcase. who knows if he could cut it in NY/NJ?

  57. Brian: The cap charge for Cassel is probably much higher than Cutler and the Pats needed to dump Vrabel – making a direct comparison based solely on the Pats/Chiefs trade not as strong.

  58. Great pick, exactly how I would have went.

  59. A safe pick .. solid .. not a great one ..

like the idea of this pick going to Denver for Cutler though ..

  60. What a coincidence. On the same day “we” pick Tyson Jackson in a mock draft, I read all about how unimpressive he’s been this offseason, with subpar performances at both the combine and the Pro Day. Notably, word is he’s going to fall into the second round, and rightfully so.

Taking that into account, and the fact that I’d like to Jets to go offense in the first round, it sounds like this is probably what they’ll actually do. And for the umpteenth draft I’ll be disappointed in our first round selection.
