Buzz: Percy Harvin to Workout for Jets

At his Pro Day (see a video clip on this report), Florida WR Percy Harvin told reporters that he has some private meetings set up with teams over the next few weeks.

Harvin has a workout lined up with the New York Giants on Thursday that includes only special teams drills, and then has visits scheduled with Baltimore, Miami, Minnesota, the New York Jets and several others before the end of the month.

The Giants pick 29th, Baltimore at 26, Miami at 25 and Minnesota at 22. The consensus so far seems to be that Harvin might be more of a mid twenties pick, as opposed to a late teens.

  1. I know he is listed as a wr but what you guys think he can do as a rb in the NFL?

  2. Sorry, but don’t want Harvin at all. Played in a spread offense at Florida and we already have a similar player in Leon. I would rather DHB.

  3. What I don’t want is for the Jets to draft Harvin and extend Leon to big money. Maybe there is a reason to draft Harvin. But no team needs two KR, small backs, small fast guys who can run routes.

    h

  4. Too small, guy is a peanut for an NFL WR. Why draft Harvin when the Jets need a big fast/physical WR?

  5. This guy has no experience running routes – exactly what we need with our QB situation.

  6. Really don’t want this guy, but a light bulb just appeared over my head – Eddie Royal – 5′10″ 182 lbs… Harvin 5′11 1/2 -190lbs… Hmmmm….

  7. Hes not what I want, but he wouldnt be a horrible pick, we could do much worse.

  8. They should bring Revis to all these work outs to cover these guys and see how they do…

  9. DKnyj, if they did that they would never draft a WR

  10. Dknyj

I’m on board with that but the problem is revis will make them look bad

  11. It,s kind of weird a quite a few mocks have us taking this kid

  12. Yeah, but if you watched them on film – I bet you could really figure out who is able to get the most separation, then even just asking Revis, “who was the hardest to cover” – That’s gotta be worth something, right?

  13. I agree. Look at the film. Film never lies. Carl Parisien Natick MA

  14. Yea I guess they could do that, but would Revis?

  15. Shoot me in the face please. Worst possible pick for the Jets IMO.

No way they use Revis to work out receivers and risk a potential injury in the offseason.

  16. Geez, If you were going to go by that, then why have mini-camps? training camp? Practice? etc…? He could get hurt break-dancing at the club. Should we put him under house arrest?

  17. Ok a mini-camp with walk-throughs etc. is different then going full speed doing drills against someone who most likely won’t even be on the team. I’m just saying, I wouldn’t get my hopes up to have Revis test out receivers. He is our best defensive player, and he is one cut & slip away from a torn ACL, i wouldn’t risk it.

  18. I want us to get him. I still have a feeling hes gonna be special. I’ll be more than happy to eat my crow if he bust but if he turns into what I think can man it’ll be fun looking at some of these comments in the future.

  19. Not a terrible pick if he proves that he can run crisp routes, but I am still in the opinion that we could get Cutler for a first round pick this year and a 3rd next year and then sign Matt Jones for 1 million a year, one year deal. At that point we could use our first round pick on the best available player period because we would have no immediate holes to fill.

  20. I know they would never do it – but he is probably doing intense workouts to stay in shape anyway. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is at one of those facilities in Arizona. Cotchery improved his 40 time between his 2nd and 3rd years by a whole 10th of a second after going to one of those things.

Just think the whole “injury risk” thing isn’t why the wouldn’t do I guess.

  21. If not for risk of injury, why wouldn’t they use him? I’m just saying, if i was Rex, lifting weights, doing speed drills is fine, running live route coverage is not what I want my shutdown CB doing with some college kid who is going to be going 10000% trying to impress people

  22. Percy Harvin is going to be a great NFL player. It is just a matter of where he does it. Every pro scout says that he has unlimited talent. The question about Harvin is durability. If he’s healthy, he’s dangerous. I don’t think he is the only player that the Jets should draft but, if they call his name out on draft day, i’ll be celebrating.

  23. Bassett or others,

Any word on Harvin’s 40-time at his Pro Day? Also, what’s the buzz on Josh Freeman’s private workout with the Jets?

Also, Harvin would be “big” for an RB at over 5-11 and is average for a WR…and who says he can’t run routes? Also, he’s not a KR, he didn’t do it once at Florida. He’s a weapon, a playmaker, a guy who can play both RB and WR and was a better player than either Eddie Royal or DeSean Jackson…and Harvin’s bigger than either of those guys. If the Jets want to run the ball and play ball control, a guy that was the YAC god in the NCAA wouldn’t be a bad choice. And, he’s tailor made for the Wildcat.

  24. He chose not to run one, sack.

  25. Harvin didnt run a 40 because he said he was fine with his 4.4 time. He knows that everyone already knows hes fast, its not worth it to him to run it again.

  26. HAHAHAHA Revis will make these receivers look horrible,
I dont know about Harvin i would say draft him because of the type of plays we can do with him but all those plays barely work in the NFL.

  27. this means nothing were not going to draft a wideout/slasher/return man type with the 17th pick anyway

  28. Harvins not a return man

  29. We are going to draft a wr but we just don’t know who?

    Heyward bey
    Maclin
    Nicks
Harvin………………………….1 of these guys are going to be a jet if we sign mat jones or not

  30. I don’t know. Of course, I’d like Michael Crabtree at 6′4″ with 4.48 40 yard dash, but he will be top-5 pick.

Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester stands only 5-11 (189 Lbs), but when he runs 4.27 40 Defenses fall down and pass pass interference calls abound.

Percy Harvin’s 5-11 Weight: 195 and also has blazing speed 4.32 seconds. Let’s see what he can do. We need a speed demon to stretch the defense like David Clowney did in preseason against 3rd stringers and before his broken clavicle (and Brett Favre’s torn bicept).

I would like to see Clowney signed. Any progress?

Of course, I’d love a big fast receiver too. That’s why just released (from Jaguars and jail) Matt Jones is such an intrieging physical freak (6 feet 6 inches tall, 242 pounds, 4.4 timed 40 yard dash and a 39.5 inch vert and 13.0 YPC).

What’s up with 6-4 Red Zone Target Marcus Henry? Is he under contract?

  31. Bent.. Florida has Brandon James returning kicks. I doubt Harvin told Urban I prefer not to return kicks.

  32. Dean,

    Clowney was signed

Where did you se Harvin ran a 4.32 ?

    Is Crabtree really 6″4 ?

  33. I think Percy is going to have a nice career in the NFL. However, with his durability concerns and the concern of IF his game can not only translate to the NFL but improve is in such high doubt I wouldn’t want to draft him with the 17th pick if there are other guys out there that can make an immediate impact for us this coming year.

Also, I really do not think if he would ever warrant double teams or anything like that. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is a playmaker and we could use him in such unique situations but that is saying that we have a creative and igenious OC (which we dont!). I do think he would be a great pickup in the mid to late twenties as this post is saying. And if we do trade down for any reason into the twenties and hes on the board i would be all for it.

But, with the 17th pick i really want as close to a “sure thing” as possible. I believe Tyson Jackson, Andre Smith, even Beanie Wells (only becuase of TJ contract dispute and the fact we prolly will not resign him after this year [31 yrs old[) fit into that category. Now, i would prefer to draft a RB in the later rounds but i wouldnt be mad if we did draft wells or moreno.

Now I truly believe that Rex is going to get everything out of VG I dont think this year but next, but, we cant be neive and not have the thinking that we didnt get an impact player last year when we had such a high draft pick. When you draft in the top 10 you should be getting a impact player for your team for 5-10 years. VG so far is far from that, he had maybe 20 something tackles last year I believe. So i really think we need to go into this year as if we didnt have a first round pick last year and thats why I am saying we need as close to a “sure thing” as possible. I dont believe harvin is that sure thing. Ive seen some articles showing over the past few years the WR’s chosen in the first round and I gotta say im pretty skeptical about picking one. Now, if Michael Crabtree fell to us (which never would happen) i would hope not even a second would tick off our clock before we chose him i believe this kid is going to be an elite WR in the league for his entire Career.

But what do you guys think:

If we had the option of drafting Tyson Jackson, Andre Smith, Percy Harvin, Chris “Beanie” Wells who would you honestly pick?

Tyson Jackson: A proven run stopper; and a perfect fit for our 3-4. Team Need: Absolutely, would be an instant upgrade over Kenyon Coleman.

Andre Smith: A top 5 talent and could be the best RT in football. A mauler who def would boost our running game (and we are going to be a running team!) Team Need: Would kick Woody to backup and gives us that much needed O line depth since Woody has experience at all postions (Pro Bowl Center and Guard)

Percy Harvin: A POTENTIAL elite player. Has the athletiscm, and upside you want in a player. But, has durability concerns and you just dont know if his game is going to translate and if we would use him the right way (Do we use Leon the right way!?) Team Need: WR is the BIGGEST need but we need a WR that requires constant double teams

Beanie Wells: A bruiser as a running back. Minor durability concerns. Would be a great RB to pair with Leon once TJ moves on prolly next year. Can ease him into the sytem this year before he takes the reigns next. Team Need: Moderate, not sure whats going on with TJ’s “holdout” but Wells could be a playmaker and a great back in the NFL.

So would you guys really pick Harvin over these guys and some others? (what about Bey kid could stretch the field better then any other WR in this years class)

  34. Crabtree official height is 6-1

  35. Thanks Hoz, I knew 6″4 sounded way off?

Steven, Id say Jackson, but I’d completely be on board with Wells or Moreno too.

  36. JesusRevis, one that is a sweet name…but yea Jackson is my pick too. Im hopin Denver dosent take him with the 12th pick…but now with the Cutler situation you never know if they draft Sanchez. (highly doubtful but hey ya never know) I feel like there pick is Jackson since he is a five technique lineman and they are swithching over to the 3-4 this year and were putrid at stopping the run the past few years. But if we did draft Jackson I feel our defense could be top 5 in ALL defensive categories….not becuase i think hes THAT good i just think he is the last piece to the puzzle and he could free up our playmakers. Plus having Rex Ryan call our defensive plays aint to shabby!

  37. If Crab was 6-4, he’d be the 1st or 2nd overall pick.

  38. Rolle offered a deal by Jets.

  39. Steven I agree, are defense looks pretty set, adding another good DE could put us over the top. And thanks, I like my name too, haha

  40. crabtree might fall out of the top 10

seahawks bengals and raiders are not going to take him

wheres maclins name??? anyone hes a big possibility

  41. was rolle offered already?

  42. if not we could trade up to the 10-12 range and try to get crabtree im telling ya

  43. 17 is to high for this guy given the number of injuries he has had. I think there will be better receivers availble at 17 if the is the route we decide to take.

How about this though? Trade Thomas Jones and our number two draft pick to the Browns for B.Q. and then see if we can trade him straight up for Cutler. Don’t the Browns need an upgrade at running back. We could always replace him during the first round or maybe even the third round (Green) of the draft.

  44. I’d rather pick-up Pat White in 3rd to 4th round.

  45. Several recent mock drafts have Macklin falling to the Jets. I would definitely take him over Harvin. He is rated between 8 & 12 by almost every media “expert.” Harvin has both durability and atitude issues. Also Macklin is not from Virginia Beach.

  46. well, on the bright side, at least there is no consensus pick this year.

I guess that says something about your team, when the fans have legitimate arguments for drafting five different positions with the first round choice… and none of them are absolutely necessary for the team to do well in 2010.

My prediction for first-round pick: a lot of angry Jets fans… a couple broken crystal-balls… some premature moaning…and I think someone’s going to shoot himself in the face.

some of these posts lately have been ridiculously off-base.

  47. Question: Given the declaration by the new head coach, “We’re going to run the ball”, If the Jets pick Brandon Pettigrew, can we go with our current WR corps?

  48. Isn’t Dustin Keller essentially a mutant WR?

  49. i dont like any RB in round #1 for the jets. both moreno and wells were great college players but were slower than expected (both north of 4.5) and dont have great size to justify a 1st round grade. RB is always a deep position – if we went RB i think we could address it later in the draft.

  50. JesusRevis,

Glad to know Clowney’s aboard. He be the Devin Hester type of receiver we need.

    Crabtree’s 6′ 3″. I accidentally pasted Marcus Henry’s height. Sorry bout that!

Where did you se Harvin ran a 4.32 ?

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_Percy_Harvin’s_40_yard_dash_time

We don’t need a new QB – KC’s gonna silence all critics. Let’s give some weapons starting with receiver Matt “White Lines” Jones!
    Is Crabtree really 6″4 ?

  51. It’s interesting that Harvin decided to stand on his 4.41 from the combine…doesn’t make any sense. He should have a better time than that.

  52. Anyway, based on the offense we are looking to run and based on the TJ situation, I think if we keep #17 and don’t trade for Cutler then Moreno is the no brainer in my opinion. He is by far the most complete back in the draft and I don’t really care that his 40-time was ehh at both the combine and his pro day. A back like that will make an inexperienced QBs life immensely easier.

  53. J Roc – I know all about Brandon James. My comment that “he chose not to run one” was a response to Sack’s question about his 40 time at Florida’s pro day.

As for Crabtree, he was listed at 6′3″ all year but only measured 6′1″ at the combine. So, he is 6′1″, but Dean can be forgiven for thinking he was taller, because that was the assumption all year. That and the stress fracture in his foot (not a good week for Crabtree there) may have dropped him down to around the 10th pick, but otherwise he would have been a top five pick.

  54. Apparently Texas Tech is notorious for fudging their numbers…BUSTED!

  55. I would be happy with Petigrew ay #17. Especially if we bring in Matt Jones. Petigrew is big, athletic, strong blocker with hands. He would be a great compliment to Keller. Wouldn’t Keller be nice in the slot cracking back on run plays and keeping D’s honest over the middle.

  56. OK…so the jets want to run the ball right? A power running game right? Let’s draft Harvin (or Macklin if he falls to 17) in the 1st round and Pat White (the QB from West Virginia) in the 2nd round.

Then we run a wishbone/wildcat offense with P. White at the QB…..leon and harvin/macklin as the wing backs and Jones as the dive back. We put Tony Richardson and Keller as an H back/TE to motion and block etc….

We could also start the formation tight…THEN split out leon and harvin into the slots and put Keller out wide…

I know I’m dreaming, but I think that combination would be impossible to defend. No LB core will be able to defend 3 sub 4.5 guys in the back field (White/Leon/Harvin) and when you get sucked outside…give it to jones for those yards between the tackles…

  57. Very imaginative.

  58. Frm what I’ve seen of Percy Harvin he’s very explosive! The guy could be a game breaker. So what if we already have Leon, IMO they are two different type of palyers. Harvin reminds me of Steve Smith, and if he ends up anything like him he’ll make the team the drafts him very happy.

If everyone is hell bent on taking a WR with our first pick, why isn’t Harvin a viable consideration?

  59. I like most want a tall guy who can stretch the field. Why bring in someone who is very similar to a talent we already have?

  60. Why can only a tall guy stretch the field? And none of our current WR seem to be as fast or as explosive as Harvin.

  61. I keep seeing mockdrafts citing the Jets taking Knowshon Moreno or Beanie Wells w/ the 17th pick- we have 2 pro bowl RB’s. The move to take anything other than a QB,WR,or DE lacks so much sense, that I think these mockdraft people are onto something given our history at the draft.

  62. Oh, JETS4LIFE, this isn’t Madden ‘09… you can’t just put Leon Washington at QB and scramble!
