News: Jets Worked Out QB Rhett Bomar

bomar.jpgDaily News reports that the Jets have had a private workout with Sam Houston State QB Rhett Bomar.

Sam Houston State QB Rhett Bomar said he had a private workout with Jets officials shortly after the scouting combine last month.

Bomar actually began his college career at Oklahoma, but he was tossed out in 2006 for breaking some NCAA rules. He landed at Sam Houston, where he made himself a likely draft pick. He isn’t highly rated; most scouting services have him listed as the fifth- to seventh-best quarterback, which means he’ll probably be a late-round pick.

Bomar is a guy who made a mistake in college, and his notoriety and draft status have taken a big hit because of it. But it’s clear that for some team, Bomar is a smart risk and will likely get taken off the board in the middle rounds of the draft. Bomar was top recruit out of high school and made mistakes by taking payments from a Norman, OK car dealership while at Oklahoma. You can watch his story on ESPN’s Outside The Lines.

  1. I don’t want this guy.
Who’s to say that once he’s in the NFL that he couldn’t be tempted to take a bribe to toss a game.

Sorry but I do not want to chance it.

  2. This kid went to a top school and made a mistake I would defently take a chance on him in the 4th round rather then wasting our first 3 picks on a qb who were not sure of….. I like it

  3. Bomar would be an AWFUL selection. He’s got poor accuracy and is just not an NFL starter. There are only 2-3 guys that are a potential upgrade over the guys we have on the roster right now (Stafford who will be long gone by 17, Sanchez who probably will be gone despite the mocks, and Freeman the maybe who could be gone too but will probably be there) in this draft, and Bomar is not one of them. Just adding another young, unproven guy to our group of 4, and an inaccurate one at that. No thanks.

  4. I also like it. I remember coming out of high school, he was one of the, if not the, top QBs in the country. He only played one year at OU before he got tossed. He’s got a good arm, he’s athletic. I see no reason not to give him a look.

  5. Guys:

My best friend from law school went to OU so I hear all about OU news, constantly, 24 hours a day.

Rhett Bomar really didn’t do anything morally wrong, or even criminal for that matter (I don’t think its criminal to do what he did at least, just against NCAA rules).

After Bomar was already at OU, an alumn booster offered him a summer “job” that was essentially a “no-show” job where he didn’t have to do anything.

I think taking a no-show job should have ABSOLUTELY NO relevance to whether this kid is going to be a “bad apple” when he gets to the NFL. Its not like he beat up his girlfriend, got into a bar-fight, got caught with drugs, or got a DWI or something.

The only person hurt by this was Bomar himself. I think he’d be a top-rated QB prospect but-for his violation of the NCAA rules, because he started at OU as a freshman, finishing with an 8-4 record and a victory in the Holiday Bowl. Things were looking up for Rhett and he had a rocket arm. He would eventually have developed into a QB with great stats against top-notch college competition, if he didn’t get in trouble.

DEFINITELY worth a flyer and what he got caught doing is DEFINITELY irrelevant to his true character. Maybe he is an a$$, I don’t know. I’m just making sure everyone knows what he got in trouble for was of no moral or criminal significance.

This is far less troublesome than the issues faced by Reggie Bush, for instance, whose misdeeds weren’t morally wrong, either, just against the rules, and didn’t scare teams off (I believe Bush accepted money from an agent early or something, and the agent may have gotten into criminal trouble but not Bush).

  6. We have enough QB projects!!!

  7. For me I would Rather have A Heyward-Bey/Britt then Leshaun Mccoy and then A Defensive end then Bhrett Bomer then Draft a qb in the first and see whos left in the second third and 4th round…. NO SANCHEZ!!!!!

  8. off subject but who is huey whittaker? wr?

  9. Nothing against the guy, but I just want us to focus on the unproven guys we already have. I don’t think adding a fourth QB to the mix would add that much value and may even take away from the current competition. Hopefully one of the guys we have will show significantly better then the others right off the bat so we can close the book name a starter and get him ready to go. More of a need at OL and DL depth. Let this one go.

  10. Just not a great prospect

6′2 210 okay arm….lousy school after tranfser….Not digging him at all

  11. I like that the Jets are doing their due diligence on QBs, but this guy’s stats aren’t all that great and his size isn’t great. I’m not sure that he’s worth a pick (and certainly not a 1st day pick), unless the new FO thinks Ainge should be cut. If the Jets want a deep sleeper, how about Chase Holbrook? At least he had an insane completion % in college.

  12. Ainge is not very good.

  13. Cut a QB first before selecting another in the draft!

  14. This guy is going to be the steal of the draft. Draft him low and let him learn for a few years and there is your QB of the future. He has the arm, size and he is very athletic. Another John Elway Type.

  15. fggcisco, are you serious? John Elway? That’s a comparison that mostly gets laughed at for #1 overall picks, let along mid-round project QB’s that can’t even break 60% (56.2%) completions AT A FCS SCHOOL as a senior.

  16. I just watched a bunch of his highlights and didn’t see anything impressive. He got sacked a lot and short armed a bunch of throws, and this was his highlights!

  17. I totally disagree with the negative comments, why not draft him in the fourth round if they like him and don’t cut any quarterbacks before the draft let all four that would be on the roster after we draft him have a chance to start. It never hurts to add more competition. That is one thing I liked about Mangini, he always allowed competition, now if he just new how to coach up the defense we might have won some more games.

  18. And look how things turned out for him. Competition is great, but not when it takes away from bettering the one player that will eventually be on the field.

  19. Bomar’s an idiot. Don’t need him.

  20. I will take him or Chase Daniels in the later rounds! No risk at all………….

  21. Its a waste of time even drafting this guy he has adequate height and weight. He’s like a Kellen Clemens clone same dimensions with a strong arm so why even get him? I just rather run the ball and develop what we have if one of them succeeeds we will all feel good cause its OUR guy. But if you have to draft a QB then just get Freeman

  22. Freeman would cost way too much and would be a higher risk………..That is why you draft one lower. He will probably just turn into anther Leftwich. Have you seen how long it takes him to throw the ball? This is not the style that fits our west coast hybrid.

  23. Freeman is a risk but has more upside if your feeling like a gambler then go with the guy with more upside

  24. “I don’t want this guy.
Who’s to say that once he’s in the NFL that he couldn’t be tempted to take a bribe to toss a game.”

Jet for life…you need to get a life here. The Kid went to a big 12 school who put him in this position. He would have stared the last 2 years for OU..so what does that tell you. Someone is going to take this kid and may find a gift here.

  25. I wouldn’t mind 5th or higher on this guy and let him sit on the bench for a while….

I don’t care who we draft just as long as it’s not a kicker. We could go so many ways with the picks It wouldn’t be devastating to go WR or DL or QB or OL or RB… Just start the season!!!

  26. Bomar has perfect size in my opinion. How big were Favre and Elway, btw?

Someone mentioned about him getting sacked as a knock against him…. his OL was pathetic! He was running for his life half the year.

Good arm, high IQ, good athlete. If he has matured I’d think he’s a steal!
