News: Offer to Rolle on the Table
Lisa Zimmerman reports on her blog that the Jets have made a contract offer to Samari Rolle and she seems confident that the team will sign the veteran corner.
The two sides are negotiating and it is expected that a deal will take a couple of days but I would expect this to be completed sooner than later.
Rolle was scheduled to make $4.1 million in 2009 with the Ravens. He will certainly not be getting that kind of money with the Jets.
That it’s going to take a few days basically means that the agent & player are curious to see if there’s more money somewhere else, because the deal is likely a veteran minimum, or close to it, type of deal.

If Rolle signs, then I’d like to see Lowery transition into a back-up for Jimmy Bones at free safety.
He played a good amount of the position at San Jose State and he won’t have to compete for playing time amongst all over the other CBs.
This is the best I’ve felt about the state of the defense – specifically the secondary – in some time.
2008 Scouting Report – Scouts Inc.
Grade: 62 | Key
Alert: None
Comment: Rolle is an experienced starting corner who was banged up last year with ankle, foot and shoulder injuries then found out during the season he has epilepsy. When healthy, he is very athletic and has good speed and competitiveness. He doesn’t always use good technique, but is quick enough to recover and get away with it. He tends to be upright in his pedal and turns. He has good awareness and recognition when playing off coverage. He can see routes develop and does a good job of closing with a burst. He has good recognition to screens and shallow crossing routes through zones. He is quick to plant and close with adequate angles. When he shuffles with his eyes to the inside, he is late to flip and drive on out routes. He also has trouble tracking the deep ball when receivers get behind him. When he’s up in press, he has smooth hips to flip and accelerate. He does a good job from a trail position to undercut routes and maintain leverage on receiver breaks. In the run game, he is inconsistent holding force. He will give effort, but is not a strong player to shed and tackle aggressively. He provides inconsistent wrap on tackles and will usually try to block tackle and cut the runners’ legs out from under him. His age, injuries and neurological condition could have an effect on his ability to perform in 2008.
He will be 34 at the start of the season and has not played a full season since 2006. While I believe that he will help install Ryans defense, I don’t think he will be more than a dime back.
#1 pick has to be a DE or RB or WR… I rather an end personally. Its been a while since we drafted a top d-end and thats evident by b. thomas and s. ellis’s ages. But of course we need to get the best player available over specific position players.
Bring in the best guys for a competeive camp, and may the best man win a spot!
Jarron Gilbert in the 2nd! I wanted Kendall Langford last year and he upped Miami’s line alot. Make it happen Tanny.
I think linebacker depth is there for the most part. Could use a late-round pick on depth at outside linebacker.
Bryan Thomas
Calvin Pace
Vernon Gholston
David Harris
Bart Scott
Jason Trusnik
Marques Murrell
Kenwin Cummings
Larry Izzo
Basset, I think a check on the starting DL positions (specifically DE ends) is too generous. While Ellis has been erratic, Kenyon C has not — and that is a problem.
I am not saying one of the other FA pick ups cannot be depth or replace our substandard DE, and I would only take a DE at #1 if our FO is assured that he will open the season as the starter. But, as it stands, weak DE and the performance of VG are the only possible weaknesses to this Defense.
If Rex turns VG into a starter who keeps BLT where he belongs, on the bench or off the roster, and we get a starting DE, this D will be set for years.
harlan
This is a great move. Wonder if Rex didn’t know at the start of FA signing that Rolle was likely to be free eventually. 34 y/o Rolle as a 3rd/4th CB is vastly superior to Corey Ivy.
With 3 talented Rex Ryan guys to go with a talented group from last year, this Defense has potential to be really special. I was on one of Sutton’s Army teams and he was far from an inspiring leader. Frankly a little disappointed that he still is on the staff. I think this D will exhibit more attitute and aggressiveness than any Jet D in a long long time.
I expect Pace to be a pro-bowler in this system
Um jerryB samari rolle will be 33 by the start of the season and he’ll most likely be a nickle back not a dime
What ever happened to Chris McAllister?
I like the Rolle deal if we get him cheap….Like I said yesterday we are playing some bigtime offenses in 2009. The more quality CB’s we have the better
Joe B??
You feel we are okay at ILB?? B Scott and Harris you has was hurt most of last year and has never played a full NFL season.
I am all for giving guys but Trusnik, Murrell and Cummings a look but I would hardly be considered them ILB depth.
We will need to pick up a ILB in this draft or FA. If Harris gets hurt again we are dead!!
Whether Mr. Rolle is 33 is a non-issue;as each individual at each age is different.
With his signing in addition to Mr.Shepard the secondary will go from a half built obstacle to a fine and thorough one.
After that–there remains the issue that the D-line could use reinforcing on the ends…
AND-there will probably be a need to draft someone like a Shonne Greene to replace the honorable-yet soon-to-depart Mr.Jones.
Dear DKnyj,
Thank you for your fine report.
As we’ve been lacking a corner with that ‘extra-burst’ the epilepsy may give Mr Rolle an edge of the opposing receivers who won’t be able to ascertain correctly how is is going to play them!
Drew, I feel that Trusnik played well last season in spot duty. The Jets have Harris and Scott set to play for the forseeable future next to each other for years to come.
Not quite sure where you get your facts, but Scott has played all 16 games over the past 4 seasons and has only missed 3 games in his 109 game career.
Harris played in all 16 games in 2007, but missed just 5 games last year.
I give Trusnik, Murrell and Cummings a shot to be the backup come this spring. The Jets need far more help on the offensive side of the ball, be it depth on the o-line, wide receiver, a RB, a quarterback, whatever it may be.
It would not hurt to let one of these guys backup your two stud ILBs.
considering the secondary was horrible last year, partly due to a poor pass rush at times, bringing in capable expeinced guys to fill roles is always a plus, just as long were not breaking the bank for him.
Those saying need D-line help, we did bring in a DT and DE to help add depth. Hopefully in the draft we pick up someone else too. I am very high on Jarron Gilbert, and was hoping that we drafted Langford last year too. I see gilbert as a legit replacement for ellis! Gilbert is strong, powerful, quick first step to be a great pass rusher. Colemans role is more to hold the point of attack and allow pace to pick up the stats, and thats exactly what happened last year!
Joe B- good point about not really having a sufficient backup if harris gets hurt again. Maybe we go after Rey Mauluga in the first round! We all stopped talking about drafting a LB since we got Bart Scott, maybe we shouldn’t have.
Um guys Murrell is not a ILB he is a OLB remember and even though i support the fact that the jets should get a ILB in the draft at the same time we should develop our back up ILB so they can become the next u know bart scotts of the world ya feel me
Feel ya Brad, give them a chance………. we have to focus on offense in the first couple of rounds of the draft. Reciever first maybe running back second and o-line depth next. Draft a qb in the 5th or 6th and then we will have four qbs fighting for on position.
I love that “he doesn’t get stats because…” bit. Coleman is a rotational player at best. NE’s line dosen’t just hold the point of attack and not get stats… they dominate! Ellis will be suspended for the first coupple of games and Coleman is the weak spot so I’m hoping we Jackson and a backup in the 2nd for Jenkins. Sign Holt and we’re good to go!
Rolle is to Rex Ryan as Ty Law is to Mangini.
…although he won’t play as much as Law did last year. (forgot to add that in)
We need more depth at LB and DT/E. I think more of the pass rush will come from out LB’s and DB’s, but We need the big guys to be able to consume blockers and stunt all over the place. I believe we can find both of those obvious needs in the mid-to late rounds of the draft. 3, 4 or 5 . First 2 have to go offense. If we walk with a WR, TE or RB who can both make a contirbution this year I will be extremely happy.
Think about out Dime package next year. I said it yesterday. Gonna be a lot of close games next year. Our D will keep us in every game, so hopefully we will be ahead late in most. That means the pass D will have to close games out for us. Rhodes, Leonhard, Revis, Shepherd, Lowery and Rolle. That is sick. I Like everything we have done so far.
Lets go get Matt Jones as well. Taka a little pressure off of us to get a top WR in the draft. He is better then most there anyway.
Yo, this is nice but we need some offense man. Can we make some moves on offense? I’m starting to get a little worried.
Bleed, I like your thinking. I want Matt Jones on this team. I think we can get a good versatile TE late in the draft. We need a RB that can contribute right away then take over. We need a QB to throw in the mix, nice if it was Sanchez, maybe a late round slleeper like McGee. Go to it. D looks great.
I just think a fourth quarterback in the mix would be too much. The competition is great don’t get me wrong. It would be nice to have an early resolution to the competition though so we can focus on one starter to get the season rolling. I don’t think anyone late in the draft would add that much value.
If we get Jones would anyone argue with the idea of grabbing pettigrew at #17. Think about it. He is a big blocking TE who also has great hands check the combine tapes.
Bleed,
2 things, I would say that’s too much $ to invest in the TE position. I would pick up a well rounded character guy like Bear Pascoe. And at QB, I still wouldn’t pass on Sanchez if he fell. AInge and Ratliff are toss ups. Really so is Clemens. I wouldn’t let any of those guys stop me from making a move on Sanchez at 17, especially if we bring in Jones.
The bottom line on Sanchez is that he doesn’t have enough game experience to excite me at all. I agree that he has the physical tools, but mentally I don’t think he is ready. He would be a project and I want a first pick this year that is able to step in and play.
You are probably right about the cost for a second TE.
I started out this year thinking we could trade down or out of the first and get 2 or 3 guys in round 2 and 3 that will add production immediately. WR, RB, DE/L
Britt, McCoy, and that DT that jups out of pools.
Other than a RB or maybe a TE, never expect your offensive guys to contribute immediately. If it happens great, but it’s not likely. so the fact that Sanchez aint ready to start doesn’t bother me none. He’s a better QB than Stafford and eventually we gotta bite the bullet. And Clemens is in the mix anyway.
Love the proposed Rolle signing, he is guy who will make QB’s pay when we tip passes and stepping in passing lanes in zone coverage. Sheppard and Rolle would be a monumental improvement over Poteat and Drew Coleman. All we have to do is get Cutler and Matt Jones, and the rest will take care of itself!!! (take my last comment with a grain of salt)
