Eric Mangini has invited Brett Favre to join him in Cleveland, reports Gary Myers of the Daily News. There’s no plan to turn it into anything formal, but one has to wonder what Mangini’s ulterior motives are in this situation.
Favre’s meltdown in the final five games cost Mangini his job. But now the odd couple are working out the logistics to spend time together this summer.
“He might come out to training camp to visit,” Mangini said. “Maybe I will have him do the show team or just hang out.”
Since Favre is still under contract to the Jets, Mangini can’t have him put on a uniform and run the practice team, of course. But he didn’t rule out Favre being a guest instructor for quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, who face an open competition in camp for Cleveland’s starting quarterback job.
Mangini simply likes the idea of having the future Hall of Famer around for a few days.
“I don’t think it would be anything formal,” Mangini said. “It’s not like we are hiring him to run the scout team. I don’t think he would be interested in that. He would be more like a visitor. An open invite.”
If I weren’t a Jets fan, my maniacal laughter would be piercing through the air in midtown Manhattan. It’s so cruel, yet so subtle. It’s truly diabolical, and sounds more at home in the plans of a comic book villain.
Knowing that there’s nothing the Jets fear more than Favre changing his mind (again), Mangini invites him to be around football. It’s not accidental. The one thing everyone praised Mangini for was his preparation, and now he’ll play coy after inviting Favre to camp.
And all we can do is wait—wait for Favre to ask himself questions while speaking with the press. “Do I miss football? I sure do.”
Eric, you are cold, cruel, and calculating. If only you knew how to incorporate that into a game plan, you may have never been fired.

C’mon, Brett Favre is more than just retired, he’s ancient history. From here out all he’s looking forward to is his HOF induction, and the only work he’ll be doing outside the ranch will be guest speaking here and there. I think, if he goes, it’d be an endorsement of Mangini because of Favre’s regret that the guy took the fall for him after last season. The last thing you can expect Mangini to start doing is shaking things up just to get a rise out of the NY media…
-
I think it’s a great idea for any team to reach out to the greatest QB to ever play the game. His love of the game and experience could inspire some rookies and young QBs.
Even if he is still a Jet for the time being, he’s respected so much around the league that I think he’d be welcomed to speak anywhere… but Green Bay :-P
-
I hope he convinces him to be a Brown. I’ll take a fourth rounder for the old man.
-
what’s up with THAT!
-
I thought that EM was so against having Favre on the Jets and now after he helped him get fired he invites him to hang out at Browns camp? I never for one moment bought into the notion that EM was not on board with Favre coming to the Jets. He booted Chad out the door the same way his mentor, Evil Bill did to Bernie Kosar when he coached the Browns.

“I think he’d be welcomed to speak anywhere… but Green Bay :-P”………and NY
“…… reach out to the greatest QB to ever play the (most) game(s). “

Mangini just has a crush on Favre that’s all. Isnt his sons middle name Brett because of his obsession with Favre anyway? Who the hell cares…
-
just give us a draft pick cleveland can afford him they have plenty of money under the cap.
-
I don’t think Brett Favre will make another comeback as I think this time the retirement will stick especially since Brett’s comments last month seemed to be showing Mike and Woody some loyalty.
If anything I think Brett Favre will go visit Mangini because Eric named his son after him.
-
Goes to show Jet fans that maybe Mangini was the Favre lover not B-Schott.
He can have Favre, Drew Coleman, Matt Chatham, and the rest of the scrubs he brought in here
-
I have no doubt B schott didn’t want to overhaul his offense in a month. Woody wanted Favre most of all that is very clear. Jersey sales shut down the website.
-
No doubt EM was on board with Favre, people thought otherwise but many things point at EM being the Favre lover
-
The best thing that ever happened to the JETS was the firing of Mangini. And Mangini will get fired in Cleveland. To succeed you have to have some personality. Mangini is personality minus.
-
I really love how once you guys have a scape goat you beat it to death. Makes me sad to be a Jets fan at how easily manipulated the majority seem to be. Why do you think Tannenbaum wanted at least a two year commitment? On the post we had within this month of the Jets financial figures what 1 acquisition do you think generated the majority of that cash flow?
I’m sure Mangini had his say and also feel that few coaches would say no to a HOFer with Favre’s credentials, but don’t kid yourselves into believing he was sitting there drooling for him. Woody made a mint. The mayor gave the hick the key to the city. This was a decsion from up high that had little to do with results on the football field. As for Mangini bringing Favre to Cleveland it is for the same reason Rex keeps cheering on our new QB coach. They have something to teach these kid QBs.
-
I really don’t think it’s cruel at all. Let Mangini and Favre live happily ever after for all I care. They are ancient history.
-
“I think it’s a great idea for any team to reach out to the greatest QB to ever play the game.”
I don’t think Favre is even in the top 5. Elway, Montana, Marino, Unitas, Manning, Brady… and you can probably make the case for a few others (Bradshaw, Young, Graham, Tarkenton, Moon).
-
Navedo said it best if only Mangini used his cruel talent for his game plan?! Mangini may have learned a thing or Two from Bellicheat but those things have nothing to do with Football unfortunately.
-
I guess I will defend mangini because I liked him. I think bringing in Brett makes sense for the young QB’s.
I also think we should all realize when Rex says the cupboard is not bare it’s a testemant to the players Mangini brought in here.
Compare the talent we have now with what Herm left mangini.
Drafted
Revis- Pro Bowl
Mangold_ Pro Bowl
Washington – Prow Bowl Special Teams
Ferguson – Solid Started (Pro Bowl Alternate)
Harris- (Excellent Young Player)
Keller( Excellent Young Player)
Stuckey( Good Find in 7th round)Trades/Fee agents
Alan faneca – Pro Bowl
Kris Jenkins – Pro Bowl
Calvin Pace -Very good linbacker in prime of Carrear
Thomas Jones -Pro bowl
Kenyon Coleman( Decent starter)When he came here we had no offensive line, no runnng backs, and lttle defensive talent.
Jericho cothchery, Kerry Rhodes flourished when he came here not before.
I like REX alot so far but mangini left this team in good condition.

Even if Favre decided to un-retire, we’d simply release him and be done with the whole saga. When Favre un-retired and went back to GB, they could not release him because Minnesote would have grabbed him in a heart beat. We don’t have any concerns about him playing in our division. In fact it would be great if Buffalo signed him, we’d get 2-3 pick6 per game!

Favre isnt gonna help Mangini learn how to make adjustments during the course of a game, hire a competent d cord, fill the roster with backups who are professional caliber football players or be a leader of men. The same problems he had here he will have there. If Favre plays for him again, which will probably never ever ever happen, Id take a nice 4 INT effort by our revamped d if Cleveland is on the schedule. Good riddance Mangina
-
Eddie- He did hire a competent D coordinator. Our head coach’s brother. The same one he wanted to hire for last season. Plus Scott is the only addition that is quaranteed to make an impact. Get a clue.

Mangini did draft Talent i agree with you . the problem IS……….. he did NOT know how to use the talent he drafted. -
Mangini’s a moron. If there is one thing that Favre has ALWAYS sucked at, it’s the mental side of the game: decision making, strategy and the like. He was alwats the dumb jock resting on his golden arm (a true rocket launcher, to be sure) to power his way through his career.
He has nothing to pass on in a mentor capacity because he has no KNOWLEDGE that can be shared. This was my biggest problem with the Jets acquiring him last season in that he gives nothing to the QBs behind him except the notion that you can get by on athleticism alone.

Eric learned from the master.
