Film Room: Donald Strickland Highlights
Posted on March 26th, 2009 by Bassett
Here’s some highlights of newest Jet CB Donald Strickland’s work. I don’t want to taint the comments, but from seeing these highlights … what are your thoughts?
Thanks to commenter I Bleed Green for digging these up on YouTube …

He is better than Eric Smith and Drew Coleman combined?
The guy can def hit! We should have one of the top Defensive backfields with Revis, Lito, Lowery, Strickland and Rhodes & Leonhard…I like this signing, him and Lowery will compliment each other well being the Dime and Nickel backs
Great nickel back he has rex defensive scheme written all over him that’s why 49ers fans was pissed they didn’t retain him
Strickland is an excellent tackler, great special teamer, and excels in zone coverage in nickel and dime packages, exactly where we struggled last year.
Strickland will have a big year.
The first thing that jumps out is his tackling form. He does a good job getting down low and really driving through the ball carrier. He’s not interested in simply standing a guy up for one of those “Jacked Up” highlight hits, he really wants to make sure that he brings the opposing player down to the ground. This was particularly evident in the hit against the Falcons WR.
He also displayed adequate top-end speed. Excellent lateral movement as well.
This runs counter to what we saw in the Scouts Inc. report, so either they’re wrong or this video was produced specifically to highlight supposed weaknesses in his game.
I also like that he plays with a high motor. He seems like he’ll be a good, aggressive energy guy which should fit our scheme quite nicely. Seems like a solid, under-the-radar acquisition.
good tackler but is never close enough to swat the ball down. there is always a catch then a good hit
Did he get hurt at SF? With tackling like this< why was he not on the feild more?
i’d like to see a highlight reel of his mistakes.. especially when he was drunk and running from the cops.
There are no clips from 2008 in there. I took a look at the highlights from the Jets-49ers game this past season (hard to watch it again, and made me even more furious that Leon’s TD was called back). The only place that I saw Strickland was at the 37-second mark of the video. Looked horrible against Stuckey. But, again, that’s the only clip I saw of him, and everyone has a bad play now and then.

This guy has highlights? Im sure theyre not as nice as samari rolle’s highlights!
Lee – the Niners have good depth at corner, but even so, he saw plenty of playing time as a nickel back, which is the role the Jets have him pegged for.
He looks like a gamer. If he was bigger he’d be a good LB, he hits like one. Should be a good nickle or dime back. I like the pickup.
This guy could be good, but I don’t know much about him. From watching this video I hope he plays like he did for the Colts.
Lets hope that being on a winning team (with playoff potential), having a coach that has lots of energy, and a crazy team fan base, he can feed off of it and step up his game play. I don’t know about you but if I were on the 49′ers with no playoff potential, and a coach change in mid season I might not play well just to get out of there.
His play on special teams makes me wonder what the future looks like for special teams gunners like Brad Smith and Wallace Wright. Could they see their roles reduced or even be cut? The Jets have a logjam at WR especially if they are looking to draft a WR in one of the first two rounds. I can’t see them keeping Cotchery, Clowney, Stuckey, Henry, Wright, Smith and a draft pick on roster like they did last year. This may be the end of one of those guys. Any comments?
I like what I see from this guy. Definitely seems like a Rex Ryan type of football player. I’m always a big fan of strong tackles at cb, and when a cb is a poor tackler it drives me insane. He may not be lightning fast, but he appears equipped to fill in at the nickel/dime slot positions.
He is a better version on Hank Poteat. My buddy is a big 49er fan and he said the guy can hit and cover “pretty” good in the slot. Sounds like what we need. So Ilike the move….
What this now 7 defensive additions vs 0 for the offense….lol
good closing speed, sure tackler, aggressive against the run and pass. loks like a smart addition by the staff.
I liked seeing him perform in the clutch against Arizona when the game was on the line.
Ilan – this is unlikely to affect Smith, Wallace and Carroll, because as I understand it Jason Hill and Marcus Hudson are the Niners primary gunners. Strickland is used to rush the kicker.
He is probably coming after Coleman/Smith’s ST role.
seems likee a pretty solid hard hitter actually
Good hitter and he looks like he has really good closing speed. He is in his prime at 28. If we got him for the minimum then why not, good move.
Looks a lot better than the reports about him. Strong tackler. No low-lights but solid defense of passes shown. Maybe suited to safety. Definitely useful with multiple DBs when the play is a run. Like the signing better since seeing these hi-lites; thanks for the “due diligence”.
Looks like a hitter,I cant wait to see this defense play. They are gonna be feared.
damn – this guy can tackle…wow…and fast…looks like a great move….IF he plays like that for us
If I were Drew Coleman, I’d definitely be polishing up the resume. His days are definitely numbered. Strickland was not signed to be a starter so the question is whether he is better than the secondary depth we had before. Compared to Coleman and Poteat, etc. this guy looks like a player. I’m sure there are also plenty of clips of Strickland getting toasted. That happens to all second tier CBs in the NFL. But as a nickel, dime DB this guy looks like an upgrade. Good signing.
Nice highlights. Kind of funny that they showed the same arizona play about 6 times.
First, did everybody miss the completion by VINNIE TESTAVERDE as a Carolina Panther in the clip, or am I the only one who caught it?
He looks like a good nickel who can stick!!!
I like that!
At least we are getting tougher.
He fills a need. Our dime package will be stacked next year. Hopefully we can close the door and prevent people from passing on us late in games when we are ahead.
I’m not sure if anyone saw it, but he made a real nice play blocking a pass from Warner to Fitzgerald.
The man has got some serious speed though.
Well you’re blind if you didn’t notice the speed..I only really watched through the Colts highlights..
They only thing that kinda sucks is the fact that both of his 2 pics were garbage passes to begin with. Nothing special.
Hope to see good things!
How is it that there are highlight tapes of Donald Strickland floating around youtube but I cant find one for Darrelle Revis?
@JesusRevis:
You need to have the ball thrown your way to get a highlight.
I’m sorry, but this guy looks like garbage. Hopefully he doesn’t make the team, because he’ll be a weakness if he plays. If Lowry can’t beat him out, we’re in trouble.
Like the aggressive style of this guy and the fact that he never gives up on the play. I also like the way he plays in close quarters and he is all over the short stuff, wrapping up recievers and getting his hands in for pass break ups. I def see him being a solid contributor in the dime package. If we can get Rolle in here our secondary is sick
According to Jason’s site, he got about 3.4m for the 3 year deal but with a very small signing bonus so he could be cut at any point without too much hassle.
He will have to play well this year to earn those higher amounts in years 2 and 3, so at least he’ll be motivated.
Signing bonus – $75,000
Year one – $850,000
Year two – Approx $1.1m
Year two – Approx $1.3m
