Audible: The Biggest Need?

by Bassett on March 27th, 2009 at 8:08 am

With free agency winding down it’s time to start really digging in on the draft. But first, before we talk about this guy or that guy, let’s hold off on names and consider the strengths and weaknesses of this team.

What is a must-draft position on this team? Where are the Jets thin? Where do they have things covered for a year or two? Is there one piece (say a punishing running back or a shutdown corner for example) that you covet above all else?

  1. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Lets be honest here….if we are going into the year with Ratty or KC at QB we need a WR, big RB and OL depth early and often in the draft…..

Offense – Cotch, Keller, Leon, TJ and maybe Stuckey/Clowney …..we now need a big target for these guys to throw to.

Defense – We need a young animal on the DL…either DE or DT. Someone to gameplan around. Big Jenks is great but not for a full 16.

  2. avatar jetsfan says:

We need a wide out….. ye we need a qb too but we have no number 2 and chansi may not cut it…..even if he does cut it then we have no number 3 and 4…… running back would be stupid…. trade up for maclin or down for either britt or DHB or josh freeman

  3. avatar zenlaw says:

This team definitely needs a playmaking WR, which I am convinced can be found in the 2-3 round of the draft. I would not spend the 1st round pick on a wideout.

In the first round, I would look for the best defense player remaining on the board….preferably a DT or a shutdown corner.

  4. avatar Seth (Rochester, NY) says:

I agree that our biggest needs are QB of the future, tall fast wide receiver and RB of the future, but these positions don’t always turn our well in the first round.

Let’s get some depth in the O-Line in the first and then look at those other positions in the follow on rounds.

  5. avatar Electric Ham says:

We definitely need an All Purpose TE who can block and Pettigrew is the clear cut #1 TE in this draft who can contribute in that role immediately and effectively. He will be on the field in week one and will be a huge target for our team for years to come.

Keller will be used a receiving TE obviously and I don’t see any #1 type WR’s in this draft besides Crabtree. If Maclin is on the board I think we would be a fool not to take him, however it doesnt seem likely that he will.

We obviously aren’t going to draft D in the first round with all the money we put into it already this offseason. Harvin will be a good player too but he will be very similar to Leon and I would rather draft a large target TE like Pettigrew then a player with similar attributes to one we already have.

Clowney can be our burner, I know he is unproven but he has shown he has the potential to be a legitimate deep threat. Cotch, Stuckey, Clowney & Keller will be a good WR corp. Not the best in the league but effective. Throw in Pettigrew in that mix and he will not only improve our run game with his blocking he will also improve our run game with the threat of him going over the middle and grabbing a jump ball especially in the red zone.

I see no reason to think that Jets wouldn’t be serious about drafting him. Disregard the fact that we drafted a TE last year in the first. DK is a whole different type of player and he can not fulfill the void we have a legitimate all purpose TE.

Furthermore, our #1 pick this year must see playing time in week 1. We can’t have another disaster like VG.

Wild card’s in the draft for the Jets are twofold:

1 – Stafford slips far enough to impact the Jets thinking to move up to grab him or Sanchez.

2 – Knowshown is still on the board when our pick comes.

Besides that I think we will look for Maclin or Pettigrew with our pick.

  6. avatar Bent says:

The biggest HOLE is tight end…there’s only one guy on the roster and he can’t really block.

Not saying they should draft one in the first round though.

  7. avatar Seth (Rochester, NY) says:

Zenline we must have typed at the same time. Except I went O and you D. We did well fixing out D during the offseason, it now time for the O.

  8. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

    we need to extend Leon.

    TE that BLOCKS AND CATCHES

    No. 1 WR.

Dline, we need a beast to replace K Coleman, he doesnt even sniff the QB

O line depth (killed us in ’07)

ill go into the season with these qb’s but wait until next year to draft. Maybe sign leftwich or garcia.

figure out TJ’s contract where we dont pay more, maybe guarantee more $ like with Laverneus last year.

  9. avatar Peter says:

OFFENSE! The best offensive player that falls to us in RD. 1. I would be happy with Pettigrew, Maclin, Moreno, or even one of the great tackles in this draft.
Let’s face it – this league has stacked the deck against defense, and the teams that win will need to be able to score points.

  10. avatar Mark says:

First, a game-breaking wideout. Second, a game-winning QB. Both very tough to find in the draft, unfortunately, particularly in the middle of the round……

  11. avatar JerryB says:

Best player aside, a TE who can block does not exist on our current roster. If you are going to run the ball, two tight ends who can block are needed. Turner can be used in Jumbo packages, but on 3rd & 2 you want one of your blocking TEs to be able to catch the ball.

  12. avatar Marc says:

I agree with Bent that a blocking TE is the biggest need for a team desiring to pound the rock. With three viable options on the roster for quarterback, I’m hesitant to say the team has a need at the position until all three fall on their faces. Wide receiver could obviously use another body, but I view depth on the defensive and offensive line as a bigger priority. Every position on offense and defense is enhanced with good play up front, and without any solid depth, especially on the offensive line, the team is only one injury away from disaster. If the idea is to lean on the running game, taking pressure off a young QB, while providing needed rest for the defense, then the team better make damn sure they have a contingency plan in place for injuries, and ineffectiveness. I say ineffectiveness because Woody has only played RT for one season, is getting up there in age, and without a blocking TE on the roster he could be exposed this year. Faneca is likewise getting up there in age. There is also not a single person on the roster who I feel can step on at LT to handle speed off the edge. Woody can certainly not fill this role, and who the hell knows if Wayne Hunter can, so depth behind Ferguson would be nice. I really feel that the offensive line’s success is the most important factor for the team heading into next year.

  13. avatar Igs says:

Politics aside, the only 2 places where I feel there is a serious and urgent need is at WR and TE. Very important though, said TE has to be a guy that can catch and block or the Jets become completely 1 sided on the inside game. Said WR needs to be a downfield guy, and preferably big enough to draw a lot of double-team action. That’s really the key to whether Jets have a real offense next season or the Jets hang the defense out to dry for yet another season.

  14. avatar Brad says:

    TE- Pettigrew, anothony hill
    WR- DHB, Britt, Robiskie, Murphy
RB- Wells, Rashard Jennings, Arian Foster
DL- Jarron Gilbert, Khalif Mitchell, Sammie Lee Hill
    QB- Freeman
OL- It is a need, but we have bigger needs that we really need to address.

  15. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

I would sign torry holt and see if our young receivers clowney stucky and henry is as good as any receivers in this draft then I would select wells or mereno at rb in rd 1 then in the 2nd and 3rd rd I would take the best offense and defensive players available then that leaves us to rd 4 where I would look to draft a blocking te where this draft is stacked at this position rd 6 I would draft a qb project maybe the kid from texas tech harrell he can really throw the ball you see how crabtree turned out and last but not lease rd 7 I would take the best punter on the board I don’t like our situation at all field position will be the key for us this season.

  16. avatar Sig says:

DE (both), WR, RB, DT, CB, TE, FB, OL depth

  17. avatar Live4Draft says:

An all-around TE and size/speed WR are both by far our greatest areas of need.

I have been banging the drum for Pettigrew for weeks and it is nice to see the thoguht picking up some momentum. A TE who can block and separate in the short to intermediate area over the middle would be of greater importance in a power offense than a WR. If we are truly committed to the run, we may use two TE, as much as, a conventional set and Keller can occasionally move to the slot or split out to keep the defenses guessing and/or present mismatches against LB’s. Whichever young QB wins the job we need to provide a security blanket.

Drafting a RB is not too far fetched either as the structure of TJ’s contract makes it unlikely he would be back for 2010.

  18. avatar Live4Draft says:

Agree 100% with HOZ on the punter. I would actually start considering in the 6th or 5th if we trade around and end up with a 5th.

  19. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Just a note……my boy is a huge Nebraska fan. He tells me that Callahan and Freeman have some bad blood going back to when Callahan ran Nebraska. I guess Freeman was supposed to go to UN and then backed out and went to KSU at the last minute. Callahan then made some not so nice comments about Freeman….Pretty boy jock and Prima dona QB was the terms I heard.

  20. avatar JetOrange says:

In the First three rounds, OL, WR, and Rb need to be addressed, the order is dependent on overall value. For instance, I have no problem in drafting OT Michael Oher at 17.
4th Round is the best NT, DE , or LB available
6th Round a blocking TE, Pascoe,Phillips or Hill
    7th a linebacker
If you look at the losses at LB, you will need a couple of Undrafted Free Agents to come through for you

  21. avatar david i says:

    Big WR (DHB),
    Run Stopping DE (Tyson Jackson)

  22. avatar Cabras says:

I would pass on a blocking TE, there will be servicable ones cut between now and camp, I am always a proponent of building from the inside out, you can never have enough talented O, and D lineman, they make every one else look that much better.
With that said, I say we go get the best PLAYER available, depth with talent wins games, if we had a decent backup to Jenkins last year we would have won our division.

  23. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Respecfully disagree on our major need is a TE. I know we lost Baker but TE is our biggest need? The Steelers just won the SB with Heath Miller as their TE. He is an average blocker at best. The Giants won a SB with K Boss….The Ravens had T Heap…..These guys are not great blocking TE.

We do need a blocking TE but major need? I just dont see it. Big WR to play opposite Cotch, DE, OL way before TE

  24. avatar CJ says:

wideout, hopefully maclin. stay away from a qb, none in the draft are that great; and lets give a shot to the guys on the team.

  25. avatar Doug says:

I think we need Dline right off the bat. Tyson Jackson would be a nice pickup for us, Sammy Lee Hill is there too.

Obviously we could use WR help and TE help, but I think we should just sign a FA blocking TE and continue to develop keller into a complete player. He is the future.

We need to resign Leon and draft our next RB, I wouldn’t be opposed to trading TJ either while his value is high (we all know it won’t be next year with leon getting more touches) Knowshon, Rashad Jennings and Brown from UConn are nice options.

Also agree with HOZ on the punter situation. we need a world class punter to play the kind of ball rex is talking about. Can anyone believe Ben Graham got to the superbowl last year?

  26. avatar GregNJ says:

    Round 1 = TE; Pettigrew

Round 2 = WR; Britt and anyone else who is tall and fast that will still be around in the 2nd

Round 3 = RB/DE; Go with the best available here

*Definitly need a TE who like everybody else on this blog has said, who can offer a BIG target on passing downs and can man-handle ppl. on the LOS.

  27. avatar Igs says:

I think it’s a major need because it’s the only place where you actually don’t have a body right now. But taking a guy just to block means you have a developing receiver that can’t block on 1 side and a developing blocker that can’t catch on the other side. Not a good look. Heath Miller is a very good receiver and a good blocker, which is all a TE needs to be.

  28. avatar Live4Draft says:

Respectfully agree to disagree. Blocking and All-Purpose TE are two totally different things. Is a Kyle Brady or Anthony Becht our biggest need? No, because it only fills one purpose. A Ben Coates or Mark Bavarro type on the other hand fills two needs with one player and offers scheme flexibility that none of the WRs with the exception of Harvin (if he quickly transitions to a WR) in this draft offer.

  29. avatar Igs says:

Here’s some late round guys that will be great pros: Robert Francios OLB and Patrick Turner WR, and we’ve been talking a bit about Bear Pascoe TE, he’d make a ice Jet.

  30. avatar Live4Draft says:

    RD1 Brandon Pettigrew TE
    RD2 Jarron Gilbert DE
RD3 Best value size RB or size/speed WR
    RD4 Scott McKillop ILB
    RD6 Pat Macafee P
    RD7 OG/C

  31. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Live4draft

I hate the Pettigrew pick I just dont think we need to address this in round 1…….and Gilbert will be gone by our 2nd round pick

I like the Mckillop kid though….

  32. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

Guys if we just go out and sign torry holt we can continue to develop clowney stucky and henry they might be just as good or better than any receiver we select late in the draft it will solve a lot of problems and by the way in rd 2 shonn greene is a outstanding rb I hope he is available when we select……the person who mention bear pascoe I’m on board with him he is going to be a steal late in the rds at the te position

  33. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I dont hate the Holt idea. The guy still runs great routes and has glue hands. I just dont know if he wants to play in NY. He is used to that dome….

  34. avatar Igs says:

I love how everyone has just anointed Clowney. Can we get a body of work first?

  35. avatar Igs says:

Torry Holt is a big ? right now.

  36. avatar EddieC says:

biggest need = big, deep threat wide receiver

but if tyson jackson falls, i think we need to take him..we are thin at pass rusher

give ratty or clemens one year to make progress…if they display the latter of trent edwards season last year then we understand another need in QB

  37. avatar Doug in Long Valley says:

Everyone seems to be on the same page TE, WR… The problem is we only have 6 picks.

Have you looked at how many picks NE and Miami have? NE has so many they’re looking at packaging some, trade them to defer picks into next year. It will be interesting to see if we move up or down to maximize our picks. I’m as interested in that as I am who we select.

  38. avatar Rick says:

Taking a TE in round one is just stupid. Its either gonna be a DE, WR, or RB in round 1. They might address TE in round 3 but thats as high as it should go. They dont need Pettigrew just a decent all around TE that can block. To draft Pettigrew would just be stupid. They’ll probably trade down and acquire an extra second or third round pick to fill needs.

  39. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Great point Doug….

I would love to move down…This draft is deep in WR and OL….. 2 things we need. I hope one of the QB. (SAnchez or Freeman) are there and we can move down and pick up some picks.

  40. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Thank you Rick…..Well put!!

  41. avatar EddieC says:

how many do miami and NE have exactly?

  42. avatar Doug in Long Valley says:

off the top of my head, NE 11 and Miami 9 or 10

  43. avatar Rick says:

Because of TJ’s grumblings for more money and Washington made it clear he wants 4-6 mil a year neither RB could be on the roster next year so looking at a young fast bruising RB in round 1 is a real possibiliy. I love washington but I would’nt over pay for him. He’s not Brian Westbrook.

  44. avatar Brendan says:

Everyone, write this name down: Ramses Barden. He is the next Plaxico (hopefully minus the insanity). Huge, moderate speed, but uses his body extremely well to block out defenders. You do not win jump balls against this guy, just doesn’t happen. He is the big target that in a year or two will garner all the attention and double teams.

We might even be able to get him in the 3rd round, and at 6’6 230 lbs. he is huge. He also runs a 40 in the 4.5 range, which is where Plaxico used to run it. He can be had probably in round 3, but if the Jets get this guy it will be a huge addition (no pun intended) and they will have every type of weapon that a qb could ask for.

  45. avatar Matt says:

Baker Baker Touchdown Maker was a 3rd Round Pick. Why do we need to spend a 1st on his replacement? No Pettigrew please.

Unless the QB you draft is your franchise guy, he is a waste. As of this moment, we’ve gotten the same value out of Ratliff as we have VG, none. At least KC can hold a clipboard. So, play it safe and avoid wasting a pick on a guy that’s not going to play at all, even special teams. Picking a QB is the opposite of drafting depth.

WR is a need, but with Cotchery as #1 (which I think he can do healthy, unlike last year) and Keller effectively playing a #2, maybe not as much as we think? I’d still like to see a WR in Rd1 though. And I totally agree on the Clowney comments. Let’s wait before we equate the guy with Steve Smith or something.

OL Depth would be nice, but late rounds can provide depth. We can get an eventual Woody replacement next year.

RB is too difficult right now because of TJ’s contract and Leon’s lack of extension, so who knows? If we keep both, we don’t need to worry about RB this year.

I say TRADE DOWN or WR!!

  46. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Brendan…….

100% absolutey agree. Barden is an animal. He was projected to go in round 5 but after his workout he will go in round 3.

We will need athletic big WR ifwe go into this year with KC or Ratty. This guy fits the bill.

  47. avatar jcc says:

Tight end is INCREDIBLY deep in this year’s draft. There is absolutely no reason to burn a first-rounder on a tight end when there will be very good tight ends available later in the draft, even on Day 2 (and I have made my case for my choice already in a past topic). There will still be great tight ends available later on, but there is only one DHB, Maclin, Crabtree, etc. I feel that if we are intent on going into the season with Ratliff or Clemens at QB, we need to grab a WR in round one, RB in round two.

  48. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

Ramses barden won’t make it to rd 3 I don’t care what mocks have him at he’s a freak of nature that can actually play unlike james harden he”ll be gone in rd 2.

  49. avatar CRIMSON-SE7EN says:

Although I like the confidence Clowney has on trying to win the #2 in camp. I do think WR must be addressed early. I understand the Jets have an interest in Matt Jones, but if they do not go WR in round 1 then round 2. I actually am a fan of Brandon Pettigrew. I wonder if he will gain more steam as a strong option for the 17th pick? I actually have Buffalo taking him at pick 11. If the do not go WR or Pettigrew, then the pick should be RB Knowshon Moreno.

  50. avatar Brendan says:

Then I would take Barden in round 2, because he is what this team needs.

You can take rb in rd. 1, or trade back (which is what I’d like to see) pick up an extra 2nd then take either a rb if still available in rd 1 or jarron gilbert, then take barden round two with your earlier pick, and you can take either o-line depth/te/nt with your other 2nd pick.

  51. avatar TJBfan says:

To answer the questions with my opinion:

Must draft position: WR in round 1 or 2.
Jets are thin at: RB and OL/DL
Things covered for a few years: LB, Secondary
    Most coveted position: punishing RB

    Thoughts on Defense:

I have alot of confidence in our defense, and believe aside from the DLine where we lack depth(but have good starters) we look to be good for quite some time barring any injuries.

I know some people covet a true shutdown corner opposite Revis, but it doesnt make sense when you think about it. With better scheme and better personnel on D the CB position was upgraded before the trade for Sheppard. It would be foolish to gamble a pick on the thought he will be as good as Revis, and good luck paying both longterm capwise if he does turn out to be a high caliiber player.

    Thoughts on Offense:

The offense on the other hand is full of doubt. There is a question mark in every position.

QB – The big debate…can we get this spot filled with what we have? Maybe…but how many wanted to pass on Ryan and Flacco even if we were in a position to draft them? Falcons could have tried to go with in house last year and now have a franchise QB…Still Young Leinart Smith and many other young QB were riding bench last year…..Its half luck and half good decision making.

RB – TJ holding out and up there in age..LW entering his final year and questions on if he can be a feature back(in my opinion yes). Absolutely no proven depth behind them.

OL – Just like DL, good starters but no depth. This is a position where you cant afford to have no depth because 1 injury or upset player(cough Pete Kendall cough) can ruin a season.

WR – Highly agreed upon that we need a playmaker at WR. One can argue that the last two superbowl champs had a great def and revolved around the running game..but who won the game in final minutes? Burress and Holmes…

TE – Regarded by many as a major need, we enter with just Keller, our new found star…in the passing game. Im with the crowd that thinks we need to bring in a vet blocker…where did Bubba Franks go? lol

    Draft thoughts:
TE: Already Invested in Keller, bring in a vet and have him develop at blocking in the mean time.

RB: Have our veteran, bring in the future if things fall right

WR: Alot of unproven talent…last year I’d say bring in a vet but with this WR class i say grab one in Round 1 or 2.

QB: Again unproven talent here….this year we have an option of 3 possible first day QB but the bunch next year looks much better…see what we got and at worst IF we fail then we have a better QB class to choose from. That said I’d still like vet insurance….

  52. avatar swizzle81 says:

Depth on the defensive line and offensive line is where the Jets should concentrate on for the draft. If they are going to play smashmouth football, having some solid backups cannot hurt. The Jets should also look at a solid blocking TE and try and find a WR but not in the first round. Stay away from the QB’s and give the current ones a shot.

  53. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

    Tjb fan

Great post we think alike I don’t know why the jets don’t bring in a veteran receiver especially holt since we have his wr coach that was responsible for his development a rb and te is our biggest needs, we just brought in douglas and green for d line depth I would hope we draft a offensive lineman with our 1st pick and go rb and te in the later rds that’s if we don’t sign matt jones or holt shonn green rd 2 you guys might think I’m crazy he could be the best rb in this draft just youtube him if he played at usc ore ohio state he would be a top 5 pick

  54. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

I find it ironic that after Basset asked us to ” hold off on names and consider the strengths and weaknesses of this team” so many refused or were unable to comply.

Kewpies to all who followed his instructions/request.

What I came away from those posters who did what was asked was that there is a lot of agreement on our team’s weaknesses although there are differences of opinion about which positions are of most immediate need and which draft slots might best be used to address them.

I guess that is why fans are fans, the media is ignorant and opinionated (wanting to appear to be more than fans), and GMs get the big bucks and fame if they get it right — and become television analysts if they do not.

    harlan

  55. avatar Brendan says:

    Harlan,

I think it is safe to say that this is not the first time that the loyal commenters of TJB have turn a post’s comment section into a free-for-all. That’s probably just us being Jets fans, by that I mean we are always thinking in details. Asking us to generally group our needs is pointless, we’ve been doing that since before the season even ended! I agree with you that by people suggesting picks and talking about which positions is needed, we can all agree that this team has needs at WR, TE, young depth on both lines, and a rb. There is a lot of talent in the Jets’ areas of need in this draft class, so I have faith that Tanny (with Rex’s input) can really get it done.

  56. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

    Lol…….harlan that’s the truth.

  57. avatar Matt says:

Harlan, for the last time, WTF is a kewpie?! Can someone please explain what in the hell that’s supposed to mean? lol

  58. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

TE not in first rd. Too much $$ to 1 position.
WR – Tall and fast. Wherever we get the best value
RB- Can wait until next year. Unless TJ situation gets worse.
DE- Early priority if the top choises are available.

  59. avatar mole57 says:

    Matt,
A kewpie doll is often given as a prize at carnivals and the like. And since TJB can sometimes be seen as a carnival of opinions (stretching the metaphor a bit now, I know) Harlan awards a kewpie based on the opinion he sees as “winning”.

And I think we’ve now spent way too much time analyzing kewpies.

  60. avatar bernie says:

Not enough people listed what is BY FAR our greatest need (and has been for YEARS) – a PASS RUSHER!!! No, make that 5 pass rushers. Our priorities in this draft should be as follows:

    1. Pass rush
    2. Overall depth on the d-line
    3. Depth on the o-line, particularly at Tackle. In fact, if Woody is being moved back to guard, then OT becomes priority number two.
    4. Wide Receiver

Notice I didn’t list QB. The reason is that it’s such an obvious need and there are no sure-fire first round guys. I’m not high on Stafford or Sanchez, and after that you’re looking at something roughly equivalent to what we already have in Clemens and Ratliff. We need to find out if either of those guys is the answer (I certainly know Ainge is NOT). And we should sign someone like Leftwich as a stop-gap, in case both guys fall on their face.

  61. avatar pound4pound says:

If we spend any of our first three picks on TE, I’d be bitter. A blocking TE is one of the easiest positions to fill – even excellent blockers like V Shiancoe, R Royal, M Spaeth, and C Stevens were all picked in rounds 3-5, and we don’t need an all-around guy. We can address this on day 2 or in the FA / waiver markets.

I think our biggest needs are WR, QB, DE, and OL depth. If Rex / Tanny are truly confident in our current QB options, I’ll trust them on that and we can focus on the other positions.

  62. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I liked the mystery of not knowing what a kewpie was….

    Thanks for nothing mole57….lol

  63. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

Here’s where I see our needs in order, but not necessarily the order I would draft them in:

    1) TE–we are really thin at TE right now and we need a blocking TE to complement Keller

    2) Deep threat WR–we need a WR that can draw a double team and stretch the defense

    3) NT–Jenkins has shown that he can wear down over time. Drafting his replacement would be a good idea.

    4) DE–Coleman and Ellis aren’t getting any younger.

    5) OL depth

    6) QB–I’m not convinced that we need a QB, but if a top tier QB falls, we could kick the tires so to speak. I see this as somewhat of a luxury pick

    7) RB–TJ’s contract situation makes this a need

  64. avatar Tom T says:

I am in agreement with the few who feel the best move for our pick at #17 would be to TRADE DOWN! We will be better off picking up a few extra picks if we trade down.

From what I can see and from a consensus from this site, most can agree that most of our needs are on the offensive side, our biggest holes being WR/QB/OL/RB. If we trade out of round 1 we can pick up two 2nd round picks (giving us three 2nd round picks and still have our 3rd). This draft is deep at both WR and OL and if we trade down can still fill all the offensive needs the first day.

I’ve looked into it a bit and found that the Browns have two 2nd rounders they can package which would have equal value to our pick at #17 (#36 & #50). So Tanny should try to convince Mangina he needs to move to #17.

  66. avatar Bent says:

Yeah, Drew, I had heard that about Callahan and Freeman too. He was quite vocal in speaking out against him. I was discussing that in the chat with sack a few weeks ago.

EddieC: Tyson Jackson isn’t really a pass rusher. He’s more of a run stuffer.

  67. avatar Tish says:

I’m amazed at the suggestion that a TE is a priority. Keller, while not the classic all-around TE is an excellent receiver, who is a lousy blocker. TE’s are available later in the draft or as free agents and to contemplate that he would be in the game for more than 20 plays is foolish. If a primary blocking TE is necessary, just use your 6th best OL. Any student of the draft knows that TEs have the highest failure rate. A # 1 WR pr DL (large DE-not some hybrid weighing 255 and a nose to backup Jenkins are what they need most in the first round).

  68. avatar gr33n says:

For a team that wants to lean on the running game, we need more RB and o-line depth. We got lucky with the lack of injuries at those positions last year. I don’t think we can reasonably expect all of our offensive linemen to stay healthy this year.

  69. avatar JerryB says:

Last year we filled a need for a speedy pass receiving TE to complement the all-round TE we had. This year we need an all-round TE to complement the receiving TE we have. Just because we drafted Keller last year is no reason we shouldn’t take a TE this year.

Based on how the Jets are currently building the squad the biggest hole really is at Defensive End. Kenyon Coleman is a total liability. Every play goes at him because he is not very good. Shaun Ellis also isnt a 3 down, 16 game a year player anymore and needs more help than Mike DeVito. That is probably a spot I would really focus on in the 1st or 2nd round for the team.

The other glaring need is WR. We have been lacking size since Keyshawn and lacking speed since Moss. We are a very slow team especially on offense and WRs are the key to fix that. This is the other spot I think the team should focus strongly on in rounds 1 and 2 of the draft.

QB is also a need, but we are not finding one picking where we are picking so I would hold that off this year. Outside of that we need depth. The team really needs a backup NT for Jenkins. Pouha isnt the answer. The team needs another TE too.

I would not pull the trigger on a RB. They have a short shelf life and trying to fit a 3rd back into the mix is a disaster waiting to happen. RB will be a need, but in 2010, not 2009.

Harlan-where is the irony in the fact that Bassett’s instructions were not followed? If they were this thread would have stopped after 5 postings.

Bent-Thanks for the keen insight on Tyson Jackson’s lack of pass rush ability. If memory serves correct I made that point to you a few weeks ago when you described him as having the ability to pass rush and collapse the pocket at LSU.

Does anybody have information on the Draft and tickets? I called Radio City and they said they have no info yet on the Draft, which is ridiculous. I know it is a first come first serve basis but I was wonderinghow much tickets are, when I should get there Saturday morning to stand in line, etc. Any info would help.

  74. So It seems like we have a couple needs, but not a consensus priority. That being said lets get as much as we can for that #17 pick. Two 2nd rounders is not likely, but would be ideal. Even if we hop to the mid 20′s and grab a third it will benefit us handsomely with the 4 obvious needs at WR, OL, DL, RB. These all need to be addressed by the end of the 3rd. Hopefully who we pick will have an impact next year.

It seems that TJ and Leon are more concerned about contracts than football, at this time. Therefore, if one of the better RB’s drops to us at 17, we should pick one up. Normally, I would wait until later in the draft, as I would with a TE but, the top three or four RB’s look like they can be special. A good part of TJ’s success is the work of our O-Line. I would make sure that he understands that he is replaceable.

Although, Percy Harvin looks like he will be a slot receiver in the pro’s, his ability to do some of the things that Leon does, protects us just in case we can’t pay Leon what he wants.

  77. avatar Brendan says:

I really don’t think we need to upgrade the pass rush. We ended the season 7th in the league in sacks, that coupled with the fact Mangini lost his boys and stopped blitzing halfway through the season makes me think we’re fine in this regard. Especially with a guy like Rex coming in, we have pass rushers on the edge (and I’m not even counting any contribution that Gholston could make).

Also, Kenyon Coleman is what you want in a 3-4 DE. Yes, ideally, you would want a guy like Ngata that can do it all, but you can’t have all-pro players at every position. He takes up blockers and that’s the #1 priority for 3-4 dline.

  78. avatar igs says:

I’m not down for the trading down. We have few enough needs and there’s enough good players in each round that if we make smart picks it could be a very special draft. Wells would be nice. I’m souring on DHB lately. Of course if golden boy QB Mark Sanchez is there you gotta take him.

  79. avatar CA Jets Fan says:

You know, I am real tired of this Cutler stuff. It is like the Yankees considering Manny Ramirez. Stop getting these guys who give up on their teams.

We need to let Kellen Start the year and prove himself. Sign Byron Leftwich to a 2 year deal (very cheap) as a vet back up to compete in camp.

Sign LEON. I repeat pay LEON. I would trade TJ for a 3rd or 4th rounder and pick up Brown or Moreno in the draft. We can run with Leon and SMith or Moreno and I would be happy. Maybe pickup a vet to make a 3 headed monster.

Reciever? I personally like our chances with Stuckey, Cotchery, Clowny, and Smith. We have Keller and he will be an amazing asset for clemens.

Rex has it right, concentrate on the D, and move forward with the offense we have, so long as the running game is strong.

One this is for sure. We have to pay Leon.

  80. avatar igs says:

Leon is not ready to get paid like a marquis player yet and the jets would be wise not to pay him like one. Ultimately, as much as I love the player, it’s not hard to put a guy in the mix that can do what he does.

With the offense I don’t like this incestous way of looking at the team. With the D it’s all ‘go out and get the best players!’ then with the offense it’s like ‘oh well we can see what this unproven QB and this unproven corp of WRs can do…’ Some people are very apathetic imo when it comes to the offense.

I don’t mind if we take a shot with KC, but considering that the FO is not completely inept, he should’ve shown his championship colors by now.

  82. avatar CA Jets Fan says:

    no way

Leon is such an asset with keller for a young QB who needs some confidence in this league. That is what Gates gave Brees and Rivers in San Diego.

I agree with trading TJ. Atleast Leon is at camp.

  83. avatar flyboy says:

get jeremy macklin that open up jc and keller you have to respect him or he will kill you are running game will pick up because of the deep ball keller will have great year because this and if we cant get macklin then dhb bye far

  84. avatar JerryB says:

The only way I can see trading down is if we trade into the top half of the second round and pick up a #1 Iin 2010. With two number ones next year, we would have a good shot at trading up for Sam Bradford, a true franchise QB.

  85. avatar Igs says:

DE is our biggest need with Ellis suspended for weed and Coleman because he’s just not a starter and we still need a backup for Jenkins though I hope Pouha rebounds…

    Brad,

Tyson Jackson is a guy who I’ve seen a lot of. He slowly added weight over the course of his career. Initiailly he was thought of as an athletic pass rusher but then in 2006 he only had one sack in the first 8 games and many were disappointed with his production.

However, that was because, as he added the weight, he became more of a run stuffer. He will collapse the pocket and get into the backfield too and is especially adept at batting down passes at the line.

The knocks on him are that his effort is not always seen as consistent by some and that he had a lot of other talent on that line with him.

He could be a very good 3-4 DE. Is he worth the 17th pick? I’m not really sure.

In terms of whether or not we need a DE, I guess it has to be at or near the top of the list as far as wants and needs are concerned.

As a 3-4 end Jackson will rarely collapse the pocket…pure edge setter/run stuffer.

At one time he was projected to go in the top ten. Projections changed to second round. He is currently anywhere from 12 to 32 due to the glut of 3-4 teams and the fact that he is currently the only 3-4 end seen as a 1st round value.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The above comment does not contradict my earlier comment in this thread that Jackson is more of a run stuffer than a pass rusher.

As for the fact that he collapses the pocket, I have seen many LSU games over the last few years and he obviously did it a few times because I included it in my notes, so I stand by that comment. For example my notes from the 2006 game against Auburn indicate that he twice did it, picking up two half-sacks in the process. (All my notes from 2007 and 2008 are at work, so I can’t lay my hands on any more recent examples right now).

So next time you want to imply I have no idea what I’m talking about, you’ll have to find a better example. I’m sure there are lots out there.

We need to trade out of the first round. We have needs (emphasis on multiple “s”). We have no legitimate #1 starting role need. We could use a blocking tight end (later rounds); OL depth (later rounds); DL depth (later rounds); RB depth (middle rounds); Fast, tall WR (earlier rounds)
