With reference to the question about resigning our own, I have followed the cap closely and can reassure you that the current structure has been set up so there should only be a few guys each year wanting big money extensions and there are guys at each point that could be released to make room for this.

The moves they have made were all done with a long-term view, apart from the Favre one, which was a bit of a short term gamble and ultimately didn’t pay off, but hasn’t completely messed up their long term future (in reality, all it did was cut back the spending they could do this year a little). As R in CT points out, the deals for those first round guys are a bit longer and will be restructured probably with a year to go.

Leon is an asolutely outstanding player. The theoretical problem people will have with Leon making bank is that he isn’t a true #1 RB. However, he’s arguably more valuable as a total package. Somewhat tough to quantify, but 8 TD’s and 5 yards a carry and hundred of receiving yards and an elite return man all in one … he deserves a very large contract.

I also think because they were first-rounders, Nick and Brick signed bigger and longer contracts than Leon did. Usually first-rounders sign 5- and 6-year contracts while 4th rounders sign 4-year deals.

According to NYjetscap.com, Brick is signed through 2011, Mangold through 2010 and Leon’s contract runs out at the end of 2009.
