The news item that the Jets have decided to possibly hold training camp outside of their new digs in Florham Park has caused quite the ruckus. People are not pleased with the Jets’ plans to suddenly spurn their Jersey digs for an out-of-state locale as is rumored to be preferred by new head man Rex Ryan.

So here’s a quick breakdown of how things stand a day after news broke..

Is it lonely up there on your pedestal, Paul? Needel needs to take a chill pill. This is hardly a slap in the face to Jersey fans. The Jets have been in the minority holding training camp at their own facilities for years past. Most NFL teams these days venture out to a different localefor training camp only to return for the final weeks of preseason.

Ryan is an “old school coach” having been raised under his father, Buddy, and wants the Jets to have the bonding experience of being away from their homes and family and everyday lives. Here’s a question, how come Needel doesn’t rip on the Giants for not practicing in their soon-to-finished digs outside of Giants stadium? They charge PSLs. They practice four hours away. They have a brand new facility. Jeez, move on.

Who cares where they train as long as it is effective. All of this complaining is ridiculous

I happen to agree with Paul Needel on this issue. If you are a NJ taxpayer who granted the JETS millions in tax and other concessions to move their training camp to Florham Park, NJ, this is a BIG slap in the face. Not to say that the PSL ripoff isn’t a bigger slap in the face to all JETS fans.

The Governor should politely tell Woody “train in NJ or we are taking back some of those tax concessions.” After all why should I be paying more taxes to subsidize the JETS.

  3. avatar lajetsfan says:

Come on. The tax credits are designed so that the team can help the local economy via contracting with local suppliers. The bulk of that economic activity happens throughout the year and, mostly, on gamedays. The training camp spend is relatively little compared to the other expenditures.

  4. avatar lajetsfan says:

And another point, in addition to the team supporting local suppliers, the increase in income tax via player salaries is key to the tax credits. As I mentioned before, the spend on training camp is pennies compared to the big picture.

I live in Chatham, which is right by FP, and i was excited to finally have them close enough for me to take in a training camp practice. I don’t about any “community” plans they may have, I want to see training camp. This blows, and i definitely view it as the team saying the NY fan base is more important to them. They play in NJ, work in NJ, yet they call themselves a NY team, because NJ is that much inferior prestige wise. This Blows.

  6. avatar Max says:

I disagree, this is a slap in the face to NJ. I think Paul got it right.

It isn’t like they are moving to a camp in NY after a few years in Florham Park. They made a huge deal about this being a state of the art facility and now there are rumblings that they won’t have camp there. There are people locally in that area with a financial interest in this.

If Ryan thinks having a camp somewhere else gives the Jets a better chance to win, that is what they should do. At the same time though, the Jets should be blasted for this.

I just dropped the season ticket check in the mail when I heard aout this. Not only are they forcing me to move my seats, which I’ve sat in since Shea, but now I can’t even take my 4 boys to training camp!
This organization is testing my patience again.
I’ve learned to deal with the disappointments on the field. But why didn’t they communicate this earlier? They’ve been talking up Florham park for about 2 years now, all this competitive advantage BS. This really chaps my ass!

  8. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Who cares about this? All I hear is reporters from NJ complaining that they have to travel to cover the team. I dont care if Ryan takes this team to the moon if he thinks it will help win games this year.

The Floram Park facility helps from August – hopefully Feb. They practice there during the year and then play 20 miles down the road.

i go to school in SUNY Cortland, and i am A-OKAY with this move

    Guys, guys,guys:

Do you really think that this owner and his suck-up care about the lowly, (in numbers only) Hofstra or the Florham Pk fans? He looks a the BIG picture (as in $$$$$) and considers the Jets a Metropolis team, like in revenue market share, eventhough he is a stepchild in his own home. He is the owner of this 500 lb gorilla and can sleep anywhere he wants, regardless of loyalty to the fans. Funny thing is, by doing this he is isolating the team from the fans even more.

  11. avatar Jason Krebs says:

I’m sure all the NYJ office employees who are being furloughed over the summer (basically taking pay cuts of 10%), are thrilled to see Woody suddenly find an extra million dollars to send the team to sleep away camp.

  12. avatar Joe A says:

Come back to hofstra…….long island has been packin out training camp for years and we deserve for it to stay here

  13. avatar Troy Smith says:

No one will be complaining when the wins show up. Don’t question Rex. He’s doing things Remember The Titans style.

  14. avatar coachmach529 says:

COME BACK TO HOFSTRA FOR TRAINING CAMP!
WE MISS OUR J-E-T-S ON LONG ISLAND

  15. avatar BigKatFan says:

Cortland is a great campus; with PLENTY of green practice fields. The weather meets both extremes, and i think they would love it there

  16. avatar Florham Park says:

If the Jets blow this one by not using their new 75 million dollar very private and secluded training facility for training camp then they should move out of here. The whole area is perfectly suited to build a world class team right here and good corporate citizens should give back to the community here that so warmly welcomed them.

I’m sure Atlantic Healthcare isn’t too pleased to have their name on a facility that will lie dormant while the team blows money to train elsewhere. What about the Florham Park Falcons? What do the kids get out of having the Jets here but can’t go to their camp?

  17. avatar levi says:

I am a longtime jets fan.Who can go see them if they come up north. So I am fine with it.

  18. avatar Doug in Long Valley says:

I live 23 miles from the front gate, I watched the facility being built just waiting for the 1st training camp and now this.

I know no one cares but I was counting the days.
