The First 100 Days: Day 64

by Bassett on March 28th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Just like another administration’s first 100 days, so too TJB will be keeping watch over the Rex Ryan administration for the first 100 days … playing it by the numbers if you will. Each day, we’ll try to keep the associated day number in play.

Day Sixty Four

With the 64th Pick — Kyle Clifton (LB TCU 1984)

Class of ’64 — Matt Snell and Gerry Philbin were both from this year.

ROY 1964 — Matt Snell won the Rookie of the Year Award

1964 — The Titans were 5-8-1 under coach Weeb Ewbank, finishing third in the AFL East.

As Worn By — Pete Perreault, Guy Bingham

Did Pete Kendall wear #64 at all during his time with the jets? I feel like in week 1 in 2006 he wore #64(@ Tenn.) before switching to #66 for the rest of the season.
And Stanley Daniels currently wears #64.

My Kellen Clemens 64 is his completion % of 64 in his senior season at Oregon. That’s a high percentage and was a 4% improvement over his sophomore and junior years when he had duplicate 59.9 seasons. He really benefited from his 8 game senior season. It popped his overall completion % for his college career to over 60…the magic number…and raised his draft stock. But, there were 2 aspects of that senior season that are rarely mentioned. First, he was injured…a major problem for a short QB. Remember, in his short 8-game 2007 season, he was injured. So, durability is an issue. Second, Gary Crowton was his OC for that senior season. Crowton installed a QB-friendly spread offense that inflated KC’s senior stats, especially against inferior competition. So, I’m not sure the draft pundits should’ve credited him as much as they did for that 8-game season…it’s why he’s a Jet today.

I would write more about why his senior year completion percentage was a mirage, but every time I do, the site won’t post it. Oh well, you guys can look it up.

Maybe I can do it piecemeal. His senior season reflected a 4% improvement over his prior 2 seasons. So, what made his senior season special?

  6. avatar SackDance99 says:

Oregon hired OC Gary Crowton for KC’s senior season. Crowton runs a spread offense. Thus, KC’s stats were inflated by the system.

Also, KC only played 8 games, but those 8 games made his college career. He raised his overall completion % to over 60 for his career…that’s a key evaluation metric.

But, the same scouts never discounted his senior year because of the spread offense or for durability concerns. After all, he did get injured after 8 games (and he got injured in 2007, the next time he started 8 games). So, IMO, those 8 games raised KC’s draft stock, but beating up mediocre college teams with over 70% completions shouldn’t be the basis for a rising draft stock (against USC, KC had a 51%).

    Sack,

We all know of your love affair for KC. I know that you like Josh Freeman. If you’re as right about him as you were about Matty Ice, then we should grab him at 17. Then you can leave poor KC alone.
