Daily Links: Draft Another Tight End
Posted on March 29th, 2009 by E. Weeks
Enjoy your Sunday folks.
- Another tight end could be heading to New York to help with the blocking.
- T.O. isn’t showing up to workouts. Looks like Owens is up to his usual tricks again… and to think everyone thought that would change.
- Storyline for 2009 NFL Season: Micheal Vick Returns complete with drama, a book and the support of Lovie.
- Show your support for Mike Florio by retrieving a copy of his book (see Sat March 28 photo)

I am all for a TE just not in rounds 1 or 2. This kid seems like a decent prospect but 4th round? He has late round or FA written all over him
Florio is a hack
Why is the return of Bubba Franks not an option? And what happened to Billy Bajema?(or however you spell it)
I can’t agree more. I just don’t want to see another TE in the first round. When I first saw the link I was having nightmares of K. Brady and A. Becht. I have no issue with a TE in the fourth round. I haven’t looked lately, but there has to be a descent blocking TE in the FA front left at a reasonable fee….and yes I would take Bubba back.
Bubba probably couldn’t start 16 games and he costed ~2mill….
Remember this TE would be th starter and he’d be a 4th or 5th rounder… How’s hat not an amazing value?
I really want us to trade out of round one. Now i know this is not “sexy” and hard to do for a new york based team being where the draft is held. But, stock pile some picks later in the draft and address all of our depth needs (TE, OL, DL, RB) later. Maybe with multiple 2nd or 3rd round picks (if we trade out, depending on the trade) to get best available WR, or RB, or DL. But we only need a blocking TE, that is it. Cheap is the name of the game here for me. And by trading out of round 1 we can avoid a huge contract, extra cash to sign Leon for long term. Value if a first round player doesnt live up to the hype. My opinion, all of these are benefits!!
I am all for getting a tight end but drafting that in the first round would be a huge mistake… We traded in last year to get Keller and we can still pick up a tight end in the 3rd-4th round
I still think we need a starter at TE and that Pettigrew is the answer. The only other need would be WR and that class is deep this year, finding a guy in the 2nd round would be easy. after those two needs i think the team is solid everywhere and we can use the rest of the draft for depth issues
I like what Tannenbaum’s been doing in the draft, so I have confidence in whatever approach he feels works based on value, needs and depth of draft.
TE traditionally is an undervalued position in the draft. That’s why Belichick has drafted 2 TEs in the first round with the Pats. The Jets could use a multi-purpose TE and there are quite a few in this draft. Personally, I think the 17th pick is high for any TE, but I have no problem with the Jets taking a TE later.
PatPat I agree but our wideout situation is more of an issue then our tight end issue…. Id rather get A heyward-bey or Maclin in the first then have all of them gone in the second including Britt who WILL NOT be there at our pick in the second round I think it would be a huge mistake…
TE Pettigrew
He is 20 lbs bigger than the other top TEs (Nelson, Cook, and Ingram) … if his hands are “excellent” and he is available, pull the trigger (if not, don’t… we can get one of the other TEs later).
The NY Jets need big red zone targets. Keller can be used in 2 TE sets, running him in motion from one side to the other or into the slot position. But Pettigrew is a true goal-line TE that can block and release with a 6′6″ frame… if his hands are “excellent” he will be a major weapon.
Pete F:
Couldn’t agree with you more. Florio loves to write rag articles because he IS a rag. It’s ben documented that this has been okay’d by everyone in Bufalo. He will be more ready than (mostly)all the players, and not a word mentioned about the devotion and great work he doeas with the National Alzheimers Association AND his own Foundation to hel the needy that cant buy food, pay rent or buy clothes. Florio is a complete ass !!!!
Avoid WR in the 1st round:
Crabtree will be a top 5 pick and if Heyward-Bey has “good hands” he won’t be available at #17. Most of the other WRs are late 1st round / early 2nd round talents.
And the Jets do not need another young, speedy, small WR. They already have Clowney, who is entering his 2nd year under Schottenheimer and showed some flashes.
What the Jets lack are big red-zone WRs with great hands, huge wingspans, and the ability to make the play on a corner fade pattern. Robiskie might be available in the 2nd and if not Barden should be available downstream.
Here are the most likely players in consideration for #17 under Ryan
DE Jackson
RB Wells
RB Moreno
TE Pettigrew (if the hands are top notch)
There is NO WAY the Jets draft another young, inexperienced QB with Clemens, Ratliff, and Ainge already on the roster.
I’ve seen Maclin drop to 17 in some drafts. I’d take him over a several other WR depending on who was left.
Moreno>Wells
If maclin falls to 17 that’s a no brainer a then take rb shonn grenne in the 2nd rd that’s 1 hell of a day
im tryin to think of a trade that gets the jets a late first rd pick and another second pick for 17
if we had like pick 28 and like 35-40ish then our second rd pick wed b golden, but how would this work??
options could be:
1st (25-30)
pettigrew jarron gilbert
2nd (35-45)
jarron gilbert pettigrew nicks,DHB
2nd
nicks,DHB,robiskie,britt,TE,OL
3rd
TE(ingram,etc) ramses barden,OL,DL
4th
id like to see this pick be
QB Graham Harrell
5th
OL,TE,RB
6th
OL,TE,RB
7th
OL,TE,RB
We could deal our pick to the bucs if they want to move up which I would love cause there not to far down in the first round after us so it would be worth it
What happened with Bajema?
The Jets definitely need a traditional Tight End. I think Keller will be a stud, but we still have a hole to fill. If the Jets can get a starter in the 4th or 5th round, then that is a great value pick. We already have the pass catcher in Keller, blocking tight ends are much easier to find.
If none of the Jets top rated players are available, I would agree with trading back to get more picks and stock up on depth (WR,CB,OL,DE,RB,DT)
Hank: You are right that Owens will definitely turn up in shape because he has a history of doing so. Also, it is a shame that the charity work of NFL players often goes unmentioned.
For example, we had one poster on here last year (I forget who) that constantly criticized Brett Favre for his conduct and attitude and never once mentioned the great work he did with the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation to help disadvantaged and disabled children and to provide financial aid to breast cancer patients with the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation.
Bent:
Geat post. I’ve been reading dozens and dozens of comments by fans AND Media criticizing Farve and not one single solitary comment about his benevolent work. Where did you dig to find this out? Thanks for the info, I will keep it in mind.
PS. You said that his conduct and attitude was criticized but you never mentioned character.
I had seen something on it before and the Fourward Foundation had stuck in my head.
Probably one of the reasons some sections of the media do hold him in high regard.
Bent:
You got me interested on his Foudation and guess what?and Did some research, HIS WIFE runs it, and NOWHERE out of 50 or so People that run it does Lorenzo’s name appear. Strange isn’t it? Wonder why?
Bent:
Incase you may need help, here’s a site that will give you IRS info on Non-Profit Foundations:http://www2.guidestar.org/SearchResults.aspx?legacy_keyword=brett+l+favre+foundation&selected_config=orgSearchConfiguration&x=58&y=14
Bent:
I checked a litter deeper and found out that his wife runs the show and he appears at his foundation to play a round of golf, have “a” dinner, and play some softball with his GB team mates. Not bad bad for devotion to his “Foundation”.
Oh, and by the way, he donates used stuff of his to auction at each event.
I’m not going to disparage anyone’s charity work. You think a Mississippi based farm boy would be capable of running a multi-million pound charity efficiently? It’s great that his wife personally oversees things.
Owens doesn’t run his charity either, he shows up to events like Favre and reads out prepared material as a spokeman for alzheimers. For once, this doesn’t appear to be shameless self promotion from Owens, who had obviously been touched by his grandmother’s health issues.
It’s a worthy cause (one I expect to benefit from personally when I’m older) and – entirely coincidently – one that my office is raising funds for tomorrow, but TO doesn’t answer the phone or collect donations personally either – the value comes from him attaching his name to such a cause. That’s just the way it works.
It’s great that TO received an award, because it promotes the individual and the charity. Favre himself received a congressional honor in 2007, which “recognizes his generosity to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, his work with Deanna Favre in breast cancer research, and his charitable work to benefit disabled children in both Mississippi and Wisconsin”.
I guess there is good in everyone.
Bent:
I like your sense of humor, but by millions you must mean the Alzheimers Foundation right? Surely not Farves foundation because the three functions AND their auctions they only grossed about a half a million last year.
Also, c’mon Bent, you can’t compare being honored at a gala by a internationally renown multibillion dollar Foundation for “work and “devotion” as was TO, to Farve. He is not listed, even as an Important employee, only his wife and about 50 other helpers. I give ALL kudos to his wife. Like Isaid, showing up to play golf, play softball and have dinner doesn’t count for me.
Brett’s foundation has raised over $3m since inception. That makes it a multi-million dollar organization in my eyes.
I admire the work both TO and Favre have been involved in.
It doesn’t affect my view of either on the field. Nor should it.
I hate Favre on the football field, but anyone who uses their money, influence, or time to help others is ok in my book. Favre’s name helps the organization. Thus he helps.
That being said I wanted TO as a Jet. I think Ryan would have kept him on the level.
I don’t know guys; she does all the work, he gets all the credit. I guess some people are just born lucky.
Hank- His name brings in the money. Money goe sto the people
hank,
One of the first rules of fund-raising is to use your high-profile contacts to the fullest. Maybe you don’t fully grasp how important that is to a charity. The mere use of his image can bring in loads more — the fact that he also attends and rubs elbows with donors makes a huge impact. Give it a rest.
mole57:
The NFL just recognized 89 player charities with 5 being Subtantial Philonthropies. Pennington’s was one of them, I didn’t see Farve’s anywhere near there. Take a look at those foundations, you’ll be impressed. I wasted one day trying to find Farves Foundation and what I found was very much lacking in presentation.
Why do you guys keep giving giving this guy all the accolades when his wife runs it and and he shows up to “Just have fun”.
