News: Cutler Is Just a Misunderstood Good Citizen … Like Batman

by Bassett on April 1st, 2009 at 1:49 pm

batman_imaxProFootballTalk writes that after weeks brooding, Jay Cutler is on a campaign to revive his image

Buried in a Denver Post … is a report that Cutler had packed his car and shipped it to Denver, where he planned to participate in a voluntary minicamp on April 17-19.

Intended message:  “I’m a team player.  So if you put together a Herschel Walker-style trade package and then pay me a bunch of money, I won’t become a pain in your ass a year or two from now.  Trust me.”

We’re also hearing that the Cutler camp is privately claiming that he didn’t fail to return calls and/or text messages from coach Josh McDaniels and owner Pat Bowlen.

As we understand it, the Cutler camp isn’t claiming that he returned the calls and/or texts.  The Cutler camp, we’re told, is claiming that he never got them, and that the issue is being used as a way to justify trading him – and as a way to make him look bad (which of course makes no sense because it only makes it harder to get a Herschel Walker-style trade package if Cutler is perceived as a punk by other teams).

Mike Klis of the Post also says that Cutler was “surprised” by the news that the team had decided to trade him.

Surprised?  He’s been holding his breath for how long now?  Beyond Cutler stamping his feet for this trade, why would he know be surprised to learn that they are granting him his wish?

Oh, and so Cutler never got those texts?  Well that explains everything then!  As everyone and their mother were reporting that Cutler wasn’t responding to his phone … so the chances that someone would have told him the team was trying to get in touch with him … were what … 99 percent?

Exactly how stupid does he and his agent think the public is?

why hasn’t anyone blamed the service carrier?

  2. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

If Jay Cutler is Batman make the trade. I don’t want to hear about the cap he is the Dark Knight.

  3. avatar derek says:

Not interested, this guy will be trouble

  4. avatar Bent says:

I thought we already signed Batman.

If I was his agent, this is exactly what I would have advised him to do or say.

Maybe the guy needs to grow up, but that doesn’t mean he won’t. A fresh start could be exactly what he needs. Whoever gets him is taking a chance though.

  5. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

Enough of the nonsense…..the kid is a stud…Go get this guy and QB is set for the next 10 years

  6. avatar TimNY says:

It’s hard enough being a Jets fan as it is. Making me have to cheer for a douche would just be too much.

  7. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

I just disagree there is a huge chance we are taking if we get Culter…

what?? He is now going to suck because hhe is in NY. Please….Its so overrated that playing here is hard. Just win games and everything is fine

  8. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Tim you cheer for at least ten already. I knew some bad dudes on my college football team.

I’d find it harder to cheer for Elam than Cutler.

  9. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

I love all the jet fans crying about this guy not being a man and what not……

Arent you guys tired of watching the Pats and Giants win SB? We are not winning a Super Bowl unless we hit the lotto with KC/Ratty….We can win some games and get to the playoffs but Culter give us a top 10 QB as soon as he walks thru the door

  10. avatar freddys dead says:

HAHAHA this guy is another AROD waiting to happen….what an idiot

  11. avatar fafa says:

No Cutler. I’d rather lose with what we have then lose with the higher expecations Cutler will bring.

  12. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I like A rod. He isn’t Reggie, but two MVPs isn’t bad. If the rest of the team hit or pitch in the postseason the Yankees would be fine.

  13. avatar starz31 says:

If he happens to be another Arod, sign me up. I wouldnt mind having one of the best players to ever play the game on my team, in his prime (not like Favre).
Arod cheated, yes…so did alot of people. He also cheated on his wife many times…so do alot of players. He is a bad person and craves attention, but besides playoff oppotunites, you can’t discredit his success. Thats Bad example.
And Arod has won 2 MVPs in NY…thats not bad either…AND im a mets fan. kinda hyrpocritcal though b/c I wouldnt want Arod on my team, mainly because of his attitude and salary strangle. And we already have a good 3B…cant say the same about the jets and a QB though…

  14. avatar Sig says:

I pray every night that our jets dont trade away our first and second round picks and totally ruin draft weekend for me. plus I dont want to read news every day about this deuche bag. He would cause such termoil with the chemistry, it would take at least 4 weeks for him to get it to click, why gamble again?? our boys are ready to shine right now.

(but, of course, if we did end up getting him he would get full support.)

  15. avatar NY Titan says:

Fellas, we are talking about a young, stud QB. Clemens? Ratliff? Give me a break. I was excited to see what Ratt could do this year, but in reality, it was just me making the best of a bleak situation. Cutler is a jerkoff- big deal… so is Bruce Wayne.

We need a legit QB- and signing this fat diabetic with a laser arm is putting QB on lockdown for years and years. Who was the last good QB we had who wasn’t always “just good enough to get by” or “on his way out?” Thinking… thinking… I don’t know- Kenny O?

  16. avatar starz31 says:

He’s probably surprised because the Broncos dont have another QB-option. And while he wanted to get traded, he probably thought it wasn’t realistic. The broncos are trading away a 26-year old quality QB which will hurt their offense, and quite possibley alienate a fanbase that doesnt know much about their new inexperienced 32-year old coach.

  17. avatar starz31 says:

Guys, its not a question of whether we want Cutler or not. Its a question of what it will cost to get him.

If we can get him for a reasonable fair offer…then we should do it.

If we have to overpay to get him, then there should be a serious discussion on whether he’s worth it.

Ideally b/c the broncos are in a bad posistion, they shouldn’t be making crazy demands…but realistically there are a bunch of teams that are interested and that could create a bidding war.

  18. avatar Cabras says:

    To all the haters
If Cutler puts on a Jet uniform you will cheer as loud as possible. Stop the nonsense, and don’t believe everything you read, when his teamates bury him then I will believe he is a problem, otherwise he looks like he wants to win, and has alot of passion>

  19. avatar johnl says:

myers is on 1050 right now claiming the jets are really hot for jay cutler right now and are willing to do whatever it takes…..he said he’s getting his information from someone in the jets organization he really trusts……….so let’s see

  20. avatar SackDance99 says:

I am not a Cutler-hater; I’m a Jets fan and I’ve been skeptical of trading for him. Unlike the Cutler lovers, I think there are significant downsides to him. First, he hasn’t learned how to win in th NFL, yet (and he didn’t win in college). Second, EVERY QB in Shanahan’s system makes the Pro Bowl, so I would tend to discount his stats, which were already likely inflated because of Denver’s poor defense. Third, he has a tendency to be a little careless with the football, which dovetails back to my first issue. Fourth, he’s arrogant without the back up…he wasn’t a national champion, he hasn’t led a team to a winning season or a playoff victory. So, I don’t think Cutler is a “top 10″ QB, a no-brainer trade or worth a Herschel Walker-type of trade. He’s an excellent prospect with great potential, which he hasn’t realized and may never realize.

With that said, I’m now convinced that the Jets should offer, at most, the 17th pick and an escalating 2010 pick, like in the Favre deal. Here’s why. First, as much as I like Josh Freeman, Cutler is a more known quantity and is not as risky a choice. Thus, because I want the Jets to draft Freeman at 17, swapping Freeman’s risk/reward profile for Cutler’s makes sense. Second, the escalating 2010 pick is based on the Jets team performance. Thus, if Cutler can’t win, the Broncos will get a 4th rounder. Third, Cutler could be a punk in Denver because there’s no veteran leadership. On the Jets, if he acts up, Bart Scott will knock his teeth out, Rhodes will kick him in the balls and Faneca will stuff him in a dumpster.

Every true star QB has to earn the respect of his teammates, Cutler comes in with a huge negative rep and is joining a team with a lot of guys who have played on playoff teams. Probably the biggest thing Cutler has to learn is to trust his teammates; he doesn’t have to win games on his own. So, that’s what I think Cutler is worth. Any more and the Jets will get into the realm of trading him for 2 or more expected (or actual) NFL starters without knowing whether he can QB a winning team. That’s too much for a guy who could be the next Jeff George.

  21. avatar DaveTN says:

I get a really bad feeling about this guy- all of you who are claiming they should trade for him are fixing your hopes on a mirage- he has incredible talent but will never realize it. Oh yeah, Jeff George wants back into the league. I’m not kidding.

  22. avatar JetObsessed2 says:

On the Jets, if he acts up, Bart Scott will knock his teeth out, Rhodes will kick him in the balls and Faneca will stuff him in a dumpster.

    Great line SD99..

  23. avatar Sig says:

sackdance99 is a prophet of sorts.

  24. avatar neauone says:

I wouldn’t believe anything the Bronco’s organization said, McDaniels and the Bronco’s ownership is to blame for the whole mess. If they wanted to keep Cutler who was a Shanahan man, they would have kept the OC’s and made Cutler happy or they could have fired McDaniels and brought back Shannahan and his OC’s to salvage this mess. Instead McDaniels say’s hey Cutler is our QB, but we have to look to make ourselves better, this guy doesn’t have a clue and either do the Broncos. Let them trade Cutler, and I hope to the Jets, they will send McDaniels out on a rail when Cutler brings the Jets to the S.B.

  25. avatar Anthony says:

Basset– why don’t you tell us how you REALLY feel about them getting Cutler? Ha ha.

I think there are only three or four guys you can definitely say you would take over Cutler. Personality and ‘drinking problems’ aside, because those are things we cannot quantify, you really want to roll the dice on Clemens/Ratliff/Draft pick?

This is a VERY good Jet team, remember how we all felt after Tennesse? The entire team is back, less Favre, plus Scott, Leonard, Lito Shepherd. You really want to roll the dice? The kid can play, you can’t take that away from him.

  26. avatar JetObsessed2 says:

Since it is almost inevitable that the 17th pick will be used to acquire Cutler, i think the question becomes this:

Would you rather see Kellen or Ratliff throwing the ball to Cotch and a rookie WR taken at 17, such as Hey-Bey or Maclin…(along with Stuckey, Keller, Smith, Clowney)

    OR

Cutler throwing to Cotch, Stucky, Keller, Smith, Clowney, Wallace Wright and Markus What’s His Face (the guy we drafted last year) Henry?

  27. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

Frankly I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want Cutler given the unknown status of our QB situation. However, I don’t want to mortgage the future to get him. This year’s #1 plus a pick next year which could escalate to a second round pick would seem fair. But will it be enough? We could throw Clemens or Favre into deal.

Frankly I am tired of losing and would like a QB who can give Brady and Eli a run for the money.

  28. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

On sports radio they said the jets is all over this thing like a hawk I wouldn’t be surprised if they put a deal on the table starting with the 17th pick and kellen clemens but stay tuned because the jets front office has the cutler fever and will do what it takes

  29. avatar niko1677 says:

The only trade i can think of involving a qb in cutler’s situation and age is jeff george and he went for 2 #1s and a #3, which I think is a ridiculously high price to pay for cutler.

  30. avatar Steve in Philly says:

I’ll be the first to admit it if I’m wrong, but this has disaster written all over it. I’m not hating on Cutler but man, why the heck is he going through all this deception? I’m not liking that. Plus, he’s always been catty with folks over at Denver. I just have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach about all this… then again, I’m a Jets fan- I should expect this.

  31. avatar Anthony says:

Matt Cassel ring a bell Niko?

Look at it logically– who best to evaluate the QB situation than the Jet organization– the guys who see Clemens and Ratliff in action every day, in the meeting rooms and what not? Last years trade was an indictment of their abilities.

Cutler today is signficantly better than Favre was last year–

  32. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

How come everyone keeps calling cutler a baby. His management turned their back on him three times and people call him a baby and tell him to man up.

  33. avatar Lucas says:

As a supporter of the trade for Brett last year, I must announce that I have gone full circle on this latest Jay Cutler act. Originally the thought of acquiring a 26 year old pro – bowl quarterback seemed like a move that would be the sure way for gang green to solve the quarterback situation for 2009 and beyond. But after reports that the players don’t like him and the message Rex Ryan has sent by implying that it will be a run-first offense that relies on not turning the ball over, the move just doesn’t make sense. Cutler is a little Farve- like in his occasional carelessness with the ball and as we saw last year, that can truly kill a team. By my guess the price will be a steep one and that is without adding the additional cost of Cutler’s new deal against the salary cap. Keep the first rounder, third rounder, and whatever player it will cost us. Address the needs at WR, DL and RB in the draft and have trust in KC or Ratty to just not turn the ball over and allow for our defense to reign supreme.

  34. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

The cost is going to be high regardless because its too many teams that dosent have a franchised QB and will love to have the 25 yr old gunslinger now what mr t is going to do is present a offer and wait to see what’s the final offer is from opposing teams than counter to beat their final offer I read that in the daily news last week by myers

  35. avatar Lucas says:

Hoz, you know that Myers is not always the most accurate with his assumptions

  36. avatar Liam says:

And Eric Mangini is the Penguin. I suppose Vernon Gholston could be the Phantom or perhaps the Shadow?

  37. avatar niko1677 says:

Anthony, Cassell is not an apples-to-apples comparison for a variety of reasons. the biggest being that it was one year’s worth of metrics on a 7th round pick and cutler was a #1 pick. and if anyone thinks we get cutler for a #2 they are fooling themselves.

  38. avatar john r says:

i wouldnt mind getting cutler, but for what. do you want to give up a couple number 1′s for him. i think that is a little much.
he is young and is good, but i think getting in a bidding war with teams like the lions is never good.
what is wrong with what we have and maybe getting someone else like garcia.

  39. avatar john r says:

or what about trading for anderson from cleveland. he would be real cheap and has won before.

  40. avatar Anthony says:

I dont think Cutler can be gotten for a two, the pats hand was forced by the Franchise number and Brady–

The players are both two young, successful qbs. Who cares what round they were drafted in? By that logic Tom Brady is worth less than Clemens because Clemens was a 2nd rounder.

  41. avatar Igs says:

    waaaaaa! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
    waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
    I want my mommy! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  42. avatar ridinmywave says:

I’m sorry, ibget the impression that some of you just crave big market names regardless of outcome…

Cutler is NOT a top 10 qb if you go off statistics and accomplishments and as sackdance pointed out earlier, he is clearly a product of the system shanahan set up in denver….not the other way around. I could probably post a decent qb rating under shanahan!…who hasn’t?

Why do you think he was so angry when he got fired? And why do you think he was urging the front office to keep the offensive staff together?…open your eyes! If he goes to another team and fails, he can always blame it on getting acclimated to a new system and new players. He failed this up and coming year under his new coach….he would simply be exposed.

He is currently an above average qb and would definately command some attention when it comes to trades, but let’s no get ahead of ourselves.

I can easily name 10 qb’s I would value over cutler when it comes to presence and statistics. So 25 tds and 18 ints warrant soo much respect? Gimme a break, anybody with football intelligence can see beyond that.

And don’t gimme this passing over 4,000 yards crap either….anybody who attempts that many passes and can’t get that amount of yardage should be in arena football. Danver has a spread pass happy offense, what do you expect?

  43. avatar Joe B. says:

    JAGG -

Elam is hard to root for? Why? He seems like a nice, hard-working dude who’s been through a lot of personal tragedy. He seems like an exceedingly easy guy to root for.

  44. avatar niko1677 says:

Anthony, it’s not purely about what round they were drafted in, its about the combination of drafted round and performance in the nfl. Cassell is still a relative unknown since he has only played one year whereas cutler has performed at a highlevel for 2+ seasons and has arguably lived up to his #1 pick status. therefore, Denver will at least want to recover the pick since he has performed at or near the level at which he was drafted.

  45. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

I see 66% of jets fans on this site wants cutler that a great percentage

  46. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Joe- he still forced himself upon a woman. Sorry, but what a loser. Your a football player at Notre dame and you need to take it. I’ve read all the articles about what happened, but that is wrong any day of the week. You can steal food and I understand it, you can kill someone who attacked you or a loved one, but there is no reason to sexually assault a woman.

  47. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Ridin- name the top ten you prefer since it is so easy. Keep in mind our wind situation.

  48. avatar Frank says:

ridinmywave – let’s see your list of ten.
    here’s my list, it’s short–
    Brady
    Manning
    Brees
    Rivers
    Roethlisberger
    maybe Ryan
    maybe Romo
maybe Carson Palmer but probably not

OK – what do all these QBs have in common? Completely un-get-able.

here’s my list of QBs that are better than Cutler that could possibly be traded for:

  49. avatar Joe B. says:

    JAGG -

What if she insulted his manhood in a blog comment section? Bet you’d re-consider judging him then.

In all seriousness, there’s no excuse for sexual assault, but he made a bad mistake when he was young and has been clean ever since. This is a guy who’s had to work his way into the NFL and onto a roster and has lost three siblings to gun violence, and you can’t root for him at all?

  50. avatar johnl says:

9pm tonight i hear the negotiations BEGIN….stay tuned

  51. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

romo sucks watch his numbers go down next season

  52. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Big ben
    Manning (both of em)
    Mcnabb
    Rodgers
    Rivers
    Brady
    Matt ryan
    Warner…disregarding the wind
    Palmer

And to throw salt in the wound….probably good ol chad! Lololol

  53. Sackdance and ridin… have it right. This guy is not a top 10 qb. He may be in the future, he may not, but he isn’t one now. To me, wanting to grab whatever big name is out there, at whatever price, is the epitome of the same old jets fan. Never happy with what we have, the grass is always greener. That is not to say we should be blindly happy with clemens and ratty, but christ, give them a chance before throwing away the future on a guy who doesn’t even have a winning record and does not seem to be a team player. If we get can get him for this year’s first and a conditional in the future, then ok, but no more than that.

  54. avatar ridinmywave says:

Maybe we should should give up 2 1st rd picks for derek anderson too…he threw for 29tds and was a pro bowler before……..

…And why do people keep bringing up the fact that he shredded our defense?…ok, so did seneca wallace , what’s his name from san fran and some other bums, maybe we should trade a couple 1st rounders for them too…

I don’t know in how many languages I have to explain to some of you that the guys is terribly overhyped and hasn’t proved a damn thing to warrant such respect, he is now reviered as one of if not the biggest self centered cry baby in NFL history…

  55. avatar Frank says:

    ridin –
    McNabb — isn’t he 50?
Rodgers is ok but nothing special.
Warner — isn’t he 60? And didn’t he play great for the NYG? And how can you disregard the wind when you’re talking about playing here?
Eli – didn’t you mention something about rating people based on stats?

So disregarding QBs that are getting senior discounts how many quarterbacks on your list are actually obtainable and are entering their prime?

The point is — once a team has a Pro Bowl level quarterback, no one EVER gives them up. How often do you see a QB that has this much ability actually hit the open market? never. Would PITT ever entertain a trade for Big Ben? Brady only has one leg and they still traded Cassell away for pete’s sake. The Jets have to go Cutler even if it costs 2 #1s and Clemens.

  56. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Oh yeah…..I forgot romo, hahaha.

he’s been waaaay more efficient than cutler, and yeah he is somewhat of a choke artist but boooy I’ve seen him make some plays, ecspecially that crazy pocket scramble he had against pittsburgh and found t.o streaking across the endzone!….

  57. avatar Frank says:

And regarding Derek Anderson — there’s a difference between a flash in the pan that was never expected to be good (that’s Anderson) and a guy who has amazing ability and has put up numbers to back that ability up. They both may end up being great but I’d rather gamble my draft picks on the guy that tangibly has amazing talent.

  58. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Whatever Joe. I feel bad for him. I think its tragic what happened to his family and I don’t hold his past against him, but Cutler whining a little vs. rape. It’s not even close. I like Elam and I hope he has cleaned up his life, but I’m not a big fan of rape.

I’m no good at blogging. I’m a hot head. Happy to be one. This is the only place I blog and I know I’d have hit at least one of you at one point had it been in person. I punched a guy for calling Chad an egg. I even agree that Chad is an egg.

    To Ridin
    Big ben- Yep
Manning (both of em)- Screw Eli
Mcnabb – too old and blows every pressure situation he has been in. Love him otherwise
    Rodgers- Yep
Rivers- Yep. His arm seems a little weak for our winds.
    Brady- Yep- Hate sweater models.
    Matt ryan – Yep
Warner…disregarding the wind- Too old and aided by having two top flight WRs
Palmer- Palmer has totally blown his mechanics the past couple years. If he can get back to form than yes.

And to throw salt in the wound….probably good ol Chad! Lololol—If he was free sure, but I seem to have heard a rumor about him having a weak arm.

  59. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Romo ha. Could he have any more talent around him? He has more personality issues than Cutler.

  60. avatar Brendan says:

    Frank,

“How often do you see a QB that has this much ability actually hit the open market? never.”

EXACTLY. Shouldn’t that worry everyone at least a litttttle bit? The Broncos would be nuts to trade him…unless they had a reason. So Shanahan got the boot, deal with it. How many coaching changes have there been in the NFL over the past few seasons? And how many of those team’s QBs pulled this stunt? Your OC left to go coach in sunny USC? Boo-freaking-hoo. Act like a man and move forward. Kobe Bryant, probably the best player in the NBA was on the trading block a few seasons ago. Where is he right now? Oh yea, still in LA.

Fact is, there is the way an adult acts, and the way a child acts. Cutler is acting like a spoiled brat, and if he was my kid I would’ve smacked him upside the head and told him to stop bitching.

This is allllll about money. People are forgetting he is going to demand a new contract to the team that trades for him. If the Broncos threw a 6 year $75 million contract in his face, he’d be wearing white, orange and navy next season. He’s selfish and that’s really all there is to it.

  61. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Ridin- He kicked our butt in our home in the bad weather when we were the “best” team in the league.

  62. avatar Brendan says:

    JAGG-

Elam did not rape anyone. Have you read up on what happened? The girl was a class A groupie who had a threesome with two of Elam’s teammates and was kissing Elam at one point the same night, too. Alcohol was almost certainly involved. He did not rape anyone, and to report as such is highly irresponsible. She was looking for her 15 minutes.

  63. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

That is why she still follows him around trying to thwart his career, It wasn’t kissing it was third base. I have read 50 articles on the story and I still don’t remember her name. The other two did have sex with her, which wasn’t consentual. Did you go to college? Half my schools football team did this kind of stuff. Heads out of the sand.

  64. avatar AKA....Drew says:

To not put Culter in the top 10 is absurd…..M Ryan?? Are you serious…Palmer?/ Can the guy play a year with out getting hurt?? Mcnabb at this point of his career? Warner?/Come on guys I understand you dont like the kid but he is in the same class as A. Rodgers and Rivers…. just under Big Ben and I still would take him over Eli who did play 3 decent games in a row to win a SB

After Manning, Brady and maybe Big Ben…..who is definite better QB? Nonone!!

  65. avatar Brendan says:

Yes JAGG, I went to college. I also have seen how intoxicated females are all over a guy one night, and the next morning blowing their rape whistle. Regret is tough to deal with, and it is common for a female to cry rape when she really is just ashamed of her actions.

  66. avatar AKA....Drew says:

i dont care why he is available but he is…..we have lost a ron of good players becasue of coaching changes…..This is another coach who is coming and trying to make a statment….I feel this will bite him in the ass.

Lets be that dog who bites Mcdaniels!!!!

  67. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

In April 2002, a Notre Dame junior named Lindsay Charles accused three football players of raping her at an off-campus house. A fourth, Elam, wasn’t charged with rape, but was in the bedroom. Elam fondled her and wound up being convicted of sexual battery, a felony. The others walked away, no convictions.

Charles walked away a psychological mess, friends say, so afraid of retribution in the football-obsessed Notre Dame community that she legally changed her last name while finishing her undergraduate work. (She has since returned to her real name.) Years later, when Elam resurfaced, so did she, waging a smear campaign against him wherever he showed up on the football map.

  68. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I’m walking away from this one. Being drunk and flirty doesn’t mean sex and I’ve heard the guys brag about it.

  69. avatar Brendan says:

JAGG- I don’t need you showing me that. So if the three players didn’t get convicted of rape, which is what she was alleging, why did only Elam get convicted. Because there wasn’t a rape taking place. What was she doing at a place with 4 football players by herself anyway? If I was a lawyer this would’ve gotten banged out (no pun intended) in a day.

  70. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I lived with a baseball team for a year. It’s a lot easier than you would think. If you bring a date over and have three other guys in the room. OMG there is your scenario. Impossible! Happens all the time.

    frank,

Last time I checked mcnabb is not 50 and still posses more qb skills pocket presence and mobility than cutler does and possibily ever will, and warner is not 60, but is a proven and respected winner…

And as far as rodgers, he has outshined cutler in every aspect so far…not to mention he has better mobility and in my opinion, a stronger arm.

And oh yeah, isn’t eli a superbowl champ and orchestrated one of the best plays ever(even if it was lucky) while leading his team from behind?..I think that convo stops there..

    And JAGG,

You don’t think romo would have excelled in shanahan’s system?…I think he would have probably put up better numbers than cutler, having to throw to marshall rather than drop king T.O

…Now could you imagine cutler in dallas?.. I don’t think it would have been that pretty…

Romo was the driver of that boat in dallas if you like him or not, you saw what happened when he went out…and you saw what happened when he came back irregardless of T.O..he pretty much just became another man on the field.

  72. avatar Brendan says:

JAGG that is not the same situation at all. This was not a girl dating a person (I know, just one example) she wasn’t friends with the players, so she went there with some idea of what was going to happen. This is a pointless argument, the fact remains that a court of law found that no rape took place, so you shouldn’t hold that one did.

  73. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Romo was even less of a leader than Cutler though.

  74. avatar ramble914 says:

The problem is we will not be able to land Cutler with our #17 and an escalator next year. There are other teams who have a higher 1st round pick who also want him. Why would Denver take our #17 when they could get #1 from Detroit, or #4 from Seattle? We would have to give a lot more, and thats what I have a problem with. I would do the deal in a heart beat if all it would take is this years #17 and next years 2nd rounder, but it aint gonna be that easy.

  75. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

The majority of rapes go unreported. ND is a football school. Anyone could get sucked into the glamour and then realize they aren’t where they want to be. They found Elam guilty, so you should accept that.

  76. avatar Joe B. says:

Not to mention the girl reportedly removed a tampon before the encounter, then spent the night at the house. Sounds real forced and traumatic.

I don’t know what happened, perhaps things did go too far. But like Brendan said, always taking the woman at her word is irresponsible and it’s the kind of gullible attitude that leads to stuff like the Duke lacrosse and St. John’s basketball travesties.

  77. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

The Duke lacrosse case involved a stripper who had made similar untrue claims before. The Duke one was an obvious which hunt. It cost the DA his job.

  78. avatar Brendan says:

Whatever, Elam wanted to get his d*** wet, a place every red-blooded male in America has been before. He grabbed her ‘hips and legs’ which i take to mean he was feeling her ass. So he grabs ass and 3 other guys have sex with her….and Elam gets convicted? Doesn’t seem legit to me. He prayed for forgiveness, apologized for being in a situation like that where his actions could be misinterpreted, and has since moved forward. The girl was kissing her before any of the sexual acts took place as well.

The fact that you would root for a scumbag like Cutler over a guy who made a mistake while he was still basically a kid, did what he had to do to move past it, and who has fought through personal tragedy the likes of which 99% of America would never have to know, all in order to earn his way into a significant role int he NFL is just confusing to me, that’s all.

  79. avatar johnl says:

but if you look at it why would denver trade to detroit? to get stafford who is not a denver type qb and remember the fans in denver are used to a slinger. they will not be happy with stafford and denver f.o knows that….seattle is not in this race. so that leaves the reddskins # 13 and the jets # 17 every other team that can afford cutler that needs a franchise qb picks higher than us…were in this believe me we are

  80. avatar Brendan says:

Stafford isn’t not a Denver type of QB? He’s essentially the same type of QB (physically) as Cutler. BIg arm, deceptively athletic, not very accurate.

  81. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    Whatever…. You can’t possibly have a sister.

  82. avatar ramble914 says:

Seattle is in the race, there are rumors they are offering #4 and Hasselback. Detroit would also have to offer #20 in addition to #1, but that’s mighty attractive. Stafford is a slinger and would give Denver a QB for the future.

  83. avatar ridinmywave says:

Its hard to tell who’s a better leader between cutler and romo because neither one of them really are, I think romo’s image just caught a bad wrap because he has an air head girlfriend.lol and dealt with perhaps the most difficult WR the league has ever seen, but at the end of the day, his performance has naver wavered.

I can honestly say I have never seen romo get picked apart the way jay cutler does every now and then

  84. avatar Frank says:

“Last time I checked mcnabb is not 50 and still posses more qb skills pocket presence and mobility than cutler does and possibily ever will, and warner is not 60, but is a proven and respected winner…”
    - fine — McNabb is good and Warner is certainly a good quarterback, but don’t you want someone who’s not going to retire in 2-3 years? Cutler is 26 and has at least 10-12 years left in this league. Do you really want to be looking for another quarterback in 3 years or would you rather have your QB until 2020?

“And as far as rodgers, he has outshined cutler in every aspect so far…not to mention he has better mobility and in my opinion, a stronger arm.”
    - you’re the only one that thinks Rodgers has a stronger arm. Not sure what you base your opinion on. Rodgers is probably a good QB as well but remember, he turned a team that was in the NFC Championship game with Favre into a team that missed the playoffs. Can’t say that is a great endorsement of him, even if it was only 50% his fault.

“And oh yeah, isn’t eli a superbowl champ and orchestrated one of the best plays ever(even if it was lucky) while leading his team from behind?..I think that convo stops there..”
    - YOU were the one that wanted to talk about stats. Cutler has better stats. Eli also had one of the best defenses in the league as well as a ridiculously awesome running game.
    - Cutler had arguably the worst defense in the league the past 2 years and was on what, his 9th string RB by the end of the year?

“You don’t think romo would have excelled in shanahan’s system?…I think he would have probably put up better numbers than cutler, having to throw to marshall rather than drop king T.O

…Now could you imagine cutler in dallas?.. I don’t think it would have been that pretty…”

    - Ummm… I think Cutler would have been AWESOME in Dallas. Just like any other good QB who has the most offensive talent in the league except maybe New England.

  85. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Frank,

So let me get this straight, your gonna blame the broncos defense for cutler not being a winner and blame rodgers for the packers demise? Umm…I would probably say the packers had one of the worst defenses in the league last year, probably worst than denver’s.

And if rodgers took a packers team down in the hole that means cutler single handedly destroyed a long tenured winning culture in denver!
Defense or no defense, the broncos were 13-3 before cutler got there and were doing fine before shanahan prematurely gave the keys to cutler.

They have been loosing miserably ever since! Coincidence?..I think not, and let’s stop the foolish bashing of the broncos running game. Last time I checked hillis ran all over the jets defense when we played them. He was a waay bigger concern than cutler was and we did stuff the box that day.

The broncos running game has always been mediocre since davis left, who did plummer have?…tatum bell?hahaha…give me a break!
They’re a PASS first offense anyway, so they never had a need to seek out a premier back.

Defense or no defense, the broncos have sucked ever since cutler took over, you telling me just because trevor pryce leaves, the bronco defense is in shambles?…let’s be real here

  86. avatar Tish says:

10 teams should be interested (e.g. Bucs, Lions, Bears) and 4 more may be (e.g. Carolina, Skins);why is everyone exerting so much enegery over a player that at least half of those teams can easily outbid the Jets unless Mr. T loses his mind and gives away the house?

  87. avatar ridinmywave says:

And besides cutler shredding our “oh so magnificent jets defense”(even though hillis was the real hero that day)….didn’t cutler lead his team to a bigger collapse than we had last year? Lol

He got smacked by the raiders and shafted by rivers once again. That’s why rivers doesn’t like him, cutler makes statements with his mouth…rivers does with his play

  88. avatar Mrjetgreen says:

Yeah, this is what we need, bring in a whiner and divide the clubhouse. Can’t wait to root for the house of misfits.

  89. avatar Frank says:

“So let me get this straight, your gonna blame the broncos defense for cutler not being a winner and blame rodgers for the packers demise? Umm…I would probably say the packers had one of the worst defenses in the league last year, probably worst than denver’s.”

    - so before you make a point you might take just 2 seconds and look up to see whether what you’re saying is actually true. There are these things called “google.com” and “ESPN.com” that might help. In 2008 Green Bay was #22 in the league in points allowed/game and #20 in yardage. Denver was #30 in points/game and #29 in yardage. So GB’s defense was significantly better
    - Cutler’s record in games in which the Broncos’ opponent scored 21 points or less is 13-1.
    - They were the #2 offense in the league last year. Tough to blame losing on the QB when the offense is #2 and the defense is #30.

Denver has been losing miserably because they were 28th and 30th in points against during the two years that Cutler has been starter and they no longer have the dominant running game to grind the other team down and decrease the number of the other team’s offensive possessions. Their defense sucks because Shanahan doesn’t know how to draft defenders, trades for or signs the entire Cleveland Browns defensive line (with predictable results) and changes D-Coordinators every year.

I’m not disputing that Rodgers is good – he’s fine. But GB is committed to him and is not going to just trade him away like the Broncos will do with Cutler. I would not be having this discussion if we were talking about David Garrard who is average at best. I just want a stud QB for our team for the next 10 years. And I don’t see any confidence in anyone that Clemens or Ratliff can be that guy. Maybe I’m wrong and they blow up this year. No one would be happier than me. But if I have a chance to get a young ProBowl QB with great physical ability and a cannon for an arm to play here, I want to go for it.

  90. avatar ramble914 says:

    Tish,

Thats the worry, that we’ll give away the store for this Jerk!

  91. avatar James in TN says:

I was on the fence regarding Cutler, but he did rip our D to shreds. Get him. Also if we get him, the games will be on national tv and I can ditch the Sunday ticket on directv.

Anyone who says he didn’t win in college should check to see which school he played at: Vandy. And he played in the toughest College conference in America: SEC.

    Get him Tanny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  92. avatar Tom T says:

We may not be able to agree that the JETS should go after Cutler or not, But I bet we can all agree that Myers is the worst football source on this planet who knows nothing about the Jets. I don’t even know how he is even able to talk with the Giant’s balls in his mouth,

  93. avatar Brendan says:

    Everyone needs to calm down.

Frank, Denver had a top 10 rushing attack in 2007 and had the 12th ranked rushing offense last season. They rushed the ball effectively.

In games where the defense gave up under 21 points, of course they had a good record. They finally had the chance to rely heavily on their running game and not have Cutler go out tossing grenades and turning the ball over.

Stats can be skewed any way you want if you’re convincing enough. I don’t even think we’re gonna get him so this is probably all for naught.

  94. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Lolololololol@ tom

    frank,

Sorry I didn’t go and review numbers and statistics before I made my baist comment, but with any football knowledge whatsoever off the top of the brain, we can agree that both the greenbay and bronco defenses were trash.

I understand what your getting at, but I feel that people are using any reason possible to annoint this guy as if he is a premiere quarterback…off of what!?..decent mobility and strong arm?..let’s go and trade for joe flacco then, if that’s what turns everybody on, lol….last time I checked we have two qb’s competing for a starting job who fit that mold.

when last did a qb under shanaham not produce?..

Denver hasn’t relied on a strong run game to produce, so can we please leave that senseless issue alone?..its sounds senseless when people bring that up because it was denver’s RUNNING GAME that tore us apart, not cutler, even when we stacked the box, hillis still abused us…isn’t that what we prided oursleves on our run defense?..it was plain to see we had a terrible pass defense, EVERYBODY lit us up threw the air..ecspecially matt cassel, lol (maybe we should trade for him too..smh)
You stated yourslelf, they had one of the top offenses in the league. So they running game is where it has been and right where it needs to be.

And we can debate about rodgers and cutler all day long, but ill stick to my guns in sayin that rodgers is better than cutler in ALL asstets including arm strength(my baist opinion)

And f.y.I, I’m not the only one who thinks rodgers possibly has the strongest arm in the league, it is very debatable, I didn’t believe until I watched a GB for myself. Driver who has been with favre(who used to have the strongest cannon) said that he has never seen velocity on a ball that rodgers puts on it…ever

  95. avatar JesusRevis says:

The Jets are the most pathetic franchise in the NFL when it comes to QB’s. The fact that a young frachise QB i available and so many of you are against acquiring him is outrageous. For those of you who didn’t listened to Brandon Tierney this morning, I will repeat something that he said, “Any Jet fan who wouldn’t want Jay Cutler is an idiot.” This is a no brainer. We root for a team that can never find a real QB, and now one is staring us right in the face and you have the nerve to turn him down. It’s not worth taking a shot? What do we have to lose? It’s been 40 years since we played in a Super Bowl, how could you not want this?

  96. avatar Brendan says:

    JesusRevis,

I’m getting tired of how you constantly call such a large portion of the Jets’ fan base ‘idiots’, ‘morons’ and the like. This is a matter of opinion. Opinions are neither right nor wrong. People have legitimate reasons for not wanting this guy, just because some blowhard on the radio says something, doesn’t make it true. If there was a small number (like 5%) of the fans against this trade, then yes, maybe the criticism would be warranted, but when 40%+ of the fans are against something, it probably means there are legitimate concerns with the move.

  97. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

Please, it’s Denver. It’s a second tier major city. They’ll do or say anything to get on the national scheme. Small town cities…there reporters, etc. are pure sleezbags. They guy is performing at a high level……they want to run him down (Elway in the good old days,etc…..Elway could take this team anywhere). I mean, you do that to your high level quarterback…what will they do next?….oh yes, the head coach, owner, team mates, etc. Think people…think….hard

  98. avatar JesusRevis says:

Brendan, even if people don’t like Cutler it is still ridiculous to be against the trade. How many times do I have to reiterate how pathetic this franchise’s track record is with QB’s? The fact that a talent like Cutler, who is 25, is available and so many people are against it is incredible, whether you like him or not.

I didn’t call anyone an idiot, I quoted Brandon Tierney, and obviously he is one of the MANY supporters for the Jets trading for Cutler. I could create a list of the hundreds of other sane football minds who are for the move as well.

  99. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

Brendan, dude…this 40%+ you claim, where are they based?

  100. avatar JesusRevis says:

And yes, that 40% comment was a little exaggerated, or a lot.

  101. avatar Brendan says:

    JesusRevis,

Ok, this post you didn’t. But don’t act like that you haven’t said things along those lines numerous times in the past few weeks. And how can you be for a trade that hasn’t taken place yet? If the Jets give 5 picks for Cutler, that is a bad trade. So save your criticism for the anti-cutler camp until something happens. There are plenty of people who think Cutler is not worth what teams are going to trade for him as well, like anything else there is two sides to this argument.

    Le’sean,

I’m sorry 34% right now, earlier today it was closr to 45% (I am referring to the poll on the main page). Either way, this is more than just a handful.

  102. avatar JesusRevis says:

Brendan, I have probably made open references to all Jet fans who are against trading for Cutler, but that shouldnt offend you, whether or not you are against the trade. Like you said, its all opinion. I just happen to feel that my opinion is more logical for the current discussion. A team with no starting QB, plus a 25 year old QB on the market? Im pretty sure that makes perfect sense. The parameters of the trade are meaningless because so many people on this blog have said from the start that we shouldnt trade for him. I’m sorry but we haven’t been to the super bowl in 40 years and we havent had a legit QB since Joe Namath, and its absolutely pathetic.

  103. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

I mean, was this a national poll or, out of Denver?….that would pretty much put everything to rest.

  104. avatar JesusRevis says:

Brendan, I’d say about 75% of the sports writers, TV analysts, Radio analysts, and GM’s have said it would be a great move for the Jets.

  105. avatar sackexchange says:

if we dont get him i atleast wanna hear we gave one hell of a fight for him…GET CUTLER

  106. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

Jesusrevis, that year the JETS were 12-4, and somehow lost to Denver in the AFC champ. game (Minnesota should been in the superbowl;guy didn’t miss a kick all year.damn…I thought we could have won the whole thing…but never mind) Vinny I think was fourth in the MVP voting..that’s legit for me… that injury and the departure of Parcells etc. really threw them off.

  107. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Revis,

How many tv analysts, radio analysts, sports writers etc. speak with football intelignece and actually take time to explain their logic….. Almost none

  109. avatar JesusRevis says:

Le’sean, Yeah in 1998 Testaverde had a great year, I think 28 TD’s 6 INT’s. But he only did it for 1 year, so he doesn’t qualify.

  110. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Lesean- I thought we were going to win it all too. Tear tear

    I’m with Kylenumbers

  111. avatar RKNYC says:

Well the same people, sportwrites, that wanted Favre want Cutler too I’m sure.

And just because more people agree on something doesn’t make it true. Up until 400 years ago almost everyone thought the world was flat and the Earth was the center of the universe.

Plus, how accurate is the poll on the Jets site?

Sports “writers” and “analysts” like Meyers have nothing to lose by making ridiculous statements and never have to back anything up. All they need is readers.

I think Chicago gets Cutler as I’ve stated. The Jets don’t have a shot unless they give up too much.

Maybe some of you are forgetting that one person doesn’t make a team. If Cutler was here we’d lose players/picks, salary cap space, perhaps team unity, perhaps the fan base if he is a chuck machine like he appears.

Yea let’s get Cutler, lets also get Adrian Peterson, and Sean Merriman, and everyone else that we just say “Go get him” because it’s just that easy.

Just plug Favre in for a year and the superbowl is guaranteed!

Just get Cutler and the Jets will be champions 10 times in the next 12 years! That is all it takes!

It’s been tiring reading your insults Jrevis. The site has lost something with you posting over the past few months.

And your cowardice is pathetic too. “I didn’t say you are idiots…I just used someone else saying you’re idiots to prove my point without having to say it myself.”

  112. avatar largebarge says:

FACT: Jay Cutler is a top 10 QB in the N.F.L., “Rite Now”!!!.

  114. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

To be accurate, that’s not true. History was written from a European standpoint with their dark ages. Everyone else wouldn’t have said so. Population wise, Euro doesn’t compare to Asia and other parts of world then…it’s just there perspective. There’s more than one way to get a player or picks you know…does John Abraham ring a bell/ I keep say Bryan Thomas and Kenyon Coleman. We play our cards with Denver’s defensive desperation. Stop being dramatic….you’re one who is saying Cutler is dramatic….Peterson isn’t on the the block…so is Merriman…We have the right to explore all opportunities.C’mon you here today will say you preferred Pennington over Favre…I admit twas risky bring him into a new scheme..yet again we’re not sure ourselves about Clemens or Ratliff (I would like to see Ratliff do well). With quarterbacks…hell yeah, they can a make a team….can’t run the ball forever. Anyhow, many here have malice towards Cutler, instead of Brady (you all are delusional, I say again). Some here might be PATRIOTS FANS after all. If anyone, he’s the most arrogant QB in the league. For those whose dismiss Denver’s running game… they ran on us…when they need to..at any time…that says all. If they want to run they’ll run. The Jets played right into their hands…”try” to take away Brandon and Royal (failed miserably, they made significant plays in the pass… Cutler can brag all they want…after the Kansas City, Oakland games any teams deserves to.

  115. avatar CRIMSON-SE7EN says:

When the news first broke that Cutler was available,I was very excited that the Jets would be major players in getting the young talented Qb. I am still all for giving up are 17th pick, next years first and a 2009 third round pick. However,Broncos owner Pat Bowlen prefers Cutler to go the NFC. This is where Tannebaum might let this trade get more outrageous, where players that we thought to be untouchables such as Revis,Harris, and Rhodes are now possibly in the game?! That to me makes the trade less desirable. If the Jets trade thier next to 1st rounders and a 2nd or 3rd round this year also I can live with that, but no chance do I get our stud players involved in this deal. Revis,Harris, and Rhodes must remain Jets for this to work. Denver simply will want too much from the Jets in the end and Tanny and Company will have no other choice but to drop out. If I had to predict where Cutler lands it will be in the NFC, I will go with Tampa Bay.

  116. avatar ridinmywave says:

Anyone who thinks cutler IS a top 10 qb is a terd…

  117. avatar RKNYC says:

Ok everyone in the Western world under R.C. rule. Is that better LeSean? You understood my point.

And would I have preferred CP to Favre…there is no way to say yes but that is because of hindsight, and the low cost of it, but ultimately I don’t/didn’t think either would win a SB in NY so my reasoning would be that Favre, if having to choose one last season as the QB, would be my choice. Stronger arm, but age failed him.

I think part of the perception of Cutler is from the fantasy crowd too would think that his big numbers justify his playing on any team really.

I was going to repeat what someone said earlier about how infrequently franchise QBs come around in FA because it’s crazy for GMs to let them go and instead they protect them. So either this was a HUGE mistake by Denver or they are tired of him and don’t think they can win a SB with someone like him.

The freedom to try to get Cassell from NE was given to Josh McDaniels he didn’t just say “I think I’ll try to get Cassell.” I doubt this blew up in Denvers’ face like that. Denver didn’t want him, they wanted someone provenin McDaniels’ system, they didn’t get that guy, now they are getting rid of Cutler. If they really wanted to keep Cutler they would have overwhelmed with money. You think he wouldn’t stay? Give me a break. Cutler wants his payday.
