Dan Leberfeld wrote the other day in Jets Confidential that he thinks Leon Washington, who just changed agents from the well respected Alan Herman to the lesser known Alvin Keels, might be in for a bumpy ride.
Keels is just 29-years-old.
He’s had mixed results as an agent. He did a great job recently, getting mercurial cornerback DeAngelo Hall a six-year deal from the Redskins with $23 million in guaranteed money.
Considering Hall’s immature behavior with his two previous teams, Atlanta and Oakland, this deal is remarkable.
And it was this contact that probably got Washington to switch to Keels.
Lebs then notes the failures of Keels, including Larry Johnson’s 2007 holdout and Alabama OT Andre Smith’s total implosion. Keels did hit a home run with Gibril Wilson and DeAngelo Hall’s recent contracts, but let’s remember Hall’s was with the Redksins — the “Raiders East” of overpaying players. For those successes, Keels seems to strike out often enough as he swings for the fences.
Alvin Keels clients haven’t exactly had bounding successes with Keels leading the charge. Larry Johnson, who buckled under during 2007 has already fired him. Keels also played the race card a few weeks ago; defending himself over his client’s lack of preparation around Andre Smith (who was talked about as a top overall pick) for the Draft process.
I’m glad that Keels has had some on the job lessons, but he better not make one with one of the crucial Jets playmakers that will effect the 2009 season.

JC only worth a 3rd??

Leon’s new agent? In the words of Han Solo and Indiana Jones –
“I have a bad feeling about this …”
-
AKA Drew, you stole my thunder. Apparently the Redskins are shopping Campbell directly to Denver OR to other teams for a second rounder–to use as part of a Cutler package. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nflnation/0-7-24/Report–Redskins-in-hot-pursuit-of-Cutler.html
What does everyone think of Campbell? Obviously a far less exciting player then Cutler, but a solid young QB who seems to perfectly fit Ryan’s image of a QB. Smart, tough, good guy and doesn’t make mistakes. The guy NEVER throws an interception.

Ham….
Rumor out of Washington that the Redskins need ammo to try and get Cutler since they only have 4 pick come April….they are asking for a mid 2 to high 3 if they can pull the Culter deal off.
We have NO 3rd #76 which is an early 3rd. I would even give up our 2nd #52 for him if we cant get in on Culter.
Campbell might even fit Ryan ball controlled system better than Culter.
-
I’ll take Campbell if it is for a second or third rounder. He is over 6’4 he can win a superbowl. My logic is stolen, but sounds good to me.
-
I am high on Campbell…..
6’5 240 big arm and dosent make mistakes. Plus he has played well against the NFC East…..
Not sure Snyder wants to upgrade that position but i would be all over that if I was Mr T….
-
I’m totally on board, Campbell seems to be an almost perfect fit for what we need. Also he won’t break the bank in draft picks or in restructuring his contract.
-
Drew, Campbell MIGHT fit Ryan’s system better? haha that’s an understatement. Ryan needs a QB who isn’t prone to turnovers, and Campbell/Cutler couldn’t be more opposite in this regard. I like your thinking tho, Campbell still has a lot of room to grow and has all the physical tools we could ask for. If he really is available, Jets should at least put a call in, but I doubt they would do it with 3 young QBs already on the roster.
-
Mangini said the same thing befoe we went and got Brett.
-
Campbell was drafted 2005 Culter 2006
If they are willing to break the bank for Culter (which i would also) they would have no problem bringing in Campbell who has an extra year of experience.
I know I was just throwing this out there but I really hope this happens now…..almost more than the Culter deal
-
Hey, I’m all for Campbell, he has all the qualities that I’d want in a QB and isn’t the type of guy to freelance/try to take over a game. He plays well within a system, and if we could get him for the 76 pick then absolutelyyy go and get him. He’s started almost as many games as Cutler, so the experience is there and he has the athletic ability to extend plays.
-
What is this implying, how much is an agent responsible for a player’s behavior or actions?
-
I think it’s implying that this guy convinces his clients to act irrationally in order to get what they want, and it blows up in his face as often, or more often, as it works out. But I don’t speak for Bassett, so I’m only speculating.
-
Pay Leon, Campbell may not be an upgrade over our current QB’s.
-
Steviek asks the critical question. Brilliant.
Even a football player probably knows about an agent’s successes and failures especially when they involve such key talent such as Larry J and Andre S.
What does that say about Leon? And, even if he is given bad advice, does he have to follow it?
It will be interesting to see what happens to Leon and his contract. As I posted elsewhere, If Leon wants $4 mil for five years with only $12 mil guaranteed, he will get it regardless of who is his agent for his kick return, and 3rd down prowess.
If he wants Darren Sprowles’ money, I hope we do nothing and get this year out of him, and either tag him or let him go next year. Expensive long term deals on running backs for high prices is riskier than investing in GM.

This dude Keels is going to make Mike T. trade Leon to show how serious of a negotiater he is and he won’t give in to unnecessary demands.
Be honest look at the guy’s track record, he’s dealt with organizations’ that have always, will always overpay for overrated talent.
Come on, Deangelo couldn’t cover Lynn Swann right now. lol. but seriously Mike T has shown that if it is going to get public and serious he will get rid of you.
Remember, PETEY!!!!!IT WAS GOOD KNOWING YOU LEON!!!!
-
Well since we ALWAYS trade with the Skins …. I can def. see this happening. I too like it better then Cutler. I think Campbell allows us to lean on our running game and defense…..which should be our strong points. I say give them a 2nd or 3rd whatever they want.
Sucks to be Kellen Clemens huh ? can’t we blame whoever drafted him is he sucks this bad ?
-
God, I hope we don’t acquire Cutler. Nothing like having a whiny football player trying to lead this offense in the biggest sports market in the world. If little things like what happened in Denver this past month get to him, what the hell do you think will happen when he has a bad streak and reporters start to grill him?
-
I think Mangini Picked Clemens for “his” QB of the future. And now the Jets are stuck with kid. I say cut him or trade him when Ratliff or whoever comes in to be the QB for 09, so that he has a chance to land with someone and compete.
Just my opinion -

He cant be that awful…he got G Wilson a great contract from Parcells and the Dolphins….G Wilson!!
Just a thought on the Culter front….
2 # 1′s for Culter or….
a 3rd rounder for Jason Campbell??
