No need to get rowdy fellas! Just a reminder to you baseball fans that today marks the beginning of the season for the Mets and Yankees.
Our friends over at Metsblog.com and WasWatching.com are hard at work, so be sure to check out how the day goes for both teams.
As for us, today we’re going to unveiling a Herculean panel discussion we’ve put together about the Jets, and have more information about the meetups around the NFL Draft.

This is a great day for the rare Jet/Yankee fan….CC throwing for the Yanks at Baltimore…
Love this picture as my boy juice bag Roger punked Piazza and the Mets and completely shut down them down.
-
Yay the methadone for my football heroin had arrived. Go Yanks!
-
My prediction: Yankees beat the Cubs in 5 games to win #27. Girardi changes his # to 28 for 2010.
Sorry Mets fans, despite SI’s prediction, you don’t have enough starting pitching or hitting to make playoffs. Phillies win the East.
-
Go Yankees! Been waiting for this day for a while.
By the way Ed, don’t be surprised if the Braves win the East. They have the best starting staff in the NL East and they have enough offense. The Mets may actually be the third best team in that division.
-
You guys are all nuts. Last year, with essentially an identical team the Mets missed out on the playoffs by a game. they blew 29 games after the 7th inning. That isn’t happening this year. Runaway with the division.
-
Brendan….
I assume your expecting duplicate great years from guys like Delgado, Tatis, J Maine and chubby O Perez?
Not enough hitting or starting pitching….agree with Ed watch out for the Braves…great job signing D Lowe. The guy is a bulldog.
-
Brendan-
They dont understand, watch out for the Braves haha one pitcher does not make a whole team.AKA- Yea we are.
GO METS!!
-
Delgado will have a similar year, being protected by Beltran in the lineup.
Perez is wildly inconsistent he goes from ace-like performance to barely 5th starter on a weekly basis.
Maine is coming back from injury and is a wildcard, and he had a great year last year? I must have missed that.
Tatis isn’t even a starter, so yea as a guy who will start 40 games and be a bat off the bench, I think he’ll be great.
Do you expect Jeter to stop his decline? Do you think Burnett will throw more than 100 innings? Do you have a centerfielder? How many games does Jorge make it through?
Everyone has questions, so let’s calm down with the trash-talk at elast until game 1 is over.
-
Don’t you just love unrealtistic expectations? I love opening day.
-
I know this is just my opinion and probably mine only, but Baseball sucks!
Here is why….
Future H.O.F. players getting caught in drug scandals, the ratings show baseball falls in 3rd place behind (1st) Football, (2nd) NASCAR, the season is way too long, the players get paid way too much for what playing only in warm weather, only playing when its not raining, playing in a “non full contact” sport, and believing that they are still considered the national past-time. Sorry to hit you with reality on the last one but that has been the NFL for the last decade and a half (maybe longer).
Oh I know why Baseball is awesome…. Must have something to due with the Strikes, and I’m not talking about the pitches across home plate! Baseball is the only sport I can think of that consistently turns it’s back on the fans.
-
Mets have a strong team.
mets have 3 guys in the bullpen that are better than anyone they had the last month last year.
putz, krod and green.
we will now have a full year from murphy/sheff in left ionstead of last year where we were banking on alou, and ofcourse he got hurt so we ended up playing endy and pagan way too much. The yankees have much more question marks.
Sabathia is a 25 million dollar oliver perez. Throughout his career, he has gone up and down. -
Time to stop this nonsense and talk about what really matters…NY JETS Football!!!
-
JF4L
Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t the NBA AND the NHL both had season lockouts more recently than baseball’s ’94 strike? And before you get all high and mighty about the NFL, wait until this CBA agreement expires and the owners/player’s union hit roadblocks in negotiations. Not saying it will lead to a lockout, but it is a very real possibility.
The reason baseball players make more money is because they play in 162 games. That’s twice as much as the NBA/NHL and 10 times as many as the NFL.
I love football, but I also love baseball. And it’s not like ex-football players are all saints.
BTW I went to Citifield on Friday and Sunday, and my god it’s a gorgeous building to say the least.
-
Brendan,
they both suck too!!!!! -
Brendan
I know the holes on my team and still predict a great year but didnt (like you did) pronounce a runway division win….A division that you the Mets have given away 2 straight years…. Philles are better and the Braves might be
Jeter is Jeter…..the articles of his decline are overblown. The guy still produces and helps win games
I am expecting a decent year from Burnett not a dominant one. If he gives us #3 starter stuff he did his job
All I need is my CF to catch the ball. Unlike the Mets we have enough hitting in our lineup to allow this
-
Posada gives us 80-90 behind the plate and another 30-40as the DH.CC
Wang
Burnett
Pettite
Joba
………..with a healthy Hughes in the minor?? Are you serious? This team will win 92 games in its sleep. -
96,
who does? -
But enough of baseball talk….lol
God the draft cant get here fats enough!!
-
NBA and NHL
-
Hah Drew…please stop kidding yourself. Jeter is the worst fielding SS in baseball. Look into that, I’m not just blowing smoke.
Phillies did what, exactly, to get better. They replaced Pat the bat with 195 year old Raul Ibanez.
Braves might have improved a little.
Mets improved tremendously in the area that cost them the division the past 2 years. Buster Olney went back and looked at every season since saves became a stat, and no team has ever added 2 relievers in the same season that are as good as Krod/Putz. That is why I said runaway division. Let’s say the Mets only blow HALF of the amount of games they blew because of their bullpen last year…that means they win the division by 11 or 12 games. That is why I say runaway.
-
96,
I am a sports nut so I love them both. I can’t help it. I wish I didn’t, that’d be two more seasons that didn’t end with me pissed of, drunk and speechless. -
Brendan
I agree the NBA ad NHL have had there issues (I like both sports), and if I recall around 2000 NHL closed the doors for the entire season.
However they are not even in the top 5 of sports, both collage football and collage basketball draw better ratings and fan followers.
As I mentioned before baseball is way too long, the season should be cut down to 90 to 100 games (especially now with the way the economy is and how the two new stadiums are crapping on the existing ticket holders).
As I mentioned before this is just my opinion.
-
Lay off Jeter. Few teams in this league have a man in the clubhouse as respected as he is. So he has bad range it is because he is weighed down by those championship rings. If the Mets had some one like him in the clubhouse they wouldn’t have choked t he last two years. I mean no offense by that, but it is a fact that the Mets choked. While the Yanks missed the playoffs, because they needed to lean on guys like Sidney Ponson to make a playoff push.
-
NBA closed it’s doors as well. And college sports may have more of a fan base than hockey, but definitely not the NBA.
I’m not picking on Jeter, it’s a fact that at his position he is the weakest fielding-wise. I have always thought highly of him, he is a professional, even if he is sometimes a d**k to the ‘little people’ (a few of my friends are NYPD officers that work the games and say he isn’t Mr. Wonderful 24/7). I would have loved if he came up with the Mets, and D-Wright has openly talked about modeling himself after Jeter. So settle down Yankee fans, I’m not trying to hurt your man-crush’s feelings or anything.
-
Brendan- Insulting a group of people is not a good way to calm them down. I pray you aren’t a riot cop or involved in crowd control. Respecting a guy who has been a Yankee captain for a decade doesn’t equal man crush. It is respect for him and what he has done for the team/league.
-
Brendan
I unlike most Yankee fans have respected and appreciated Jeter but thought he was a little overrated. The guy is still a winner and even if his game has diminished I want him up at bat or the ball hit to him in a big spot…… I have read read all of the % feilding articles by all of the genius baseball gods. i just dont see it when the guy plays the game
Your theory on why the Mets are going to win the division is silly. The Mets dont get to start where they left off last year before they started blowing their lead….again. The Mets are a good team but they need to Philles to come back to them to win the division. The Mets used to crap themselves when the Braves stepped on the field….now its the Philles
Buster Onley also said the Indians were going to win the World Series last year?? How did that work out?
-
the mets lost 8 games least year when leading after 8 innings.
they lost 25 games after leading from the 7th inning on.Just half of those 25 (which wouldve been average for a .500 team), the mets would have had 100 wins.
-
Y-A-N-K-S, YANKS YANKS YANKS YANKS! Hahahahahahaha!!
-
By the way, the Braves didn’t just add Derek Lowe. They also added Javier Vazquez and Kenshin Kawakami (won the MVP and runner up in the last 4 years in japan). Plus, they get Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano back in the bullpen. Granted those two are not K-Rod and Putz but they’re pretty good.
I don’t know who’ll win the division or the wildcard but Mets fans shouldn’t be too proud of their team yet. Aside from Santana and Pelfrey, the whole rotation is a question mark.
As for the Yankees, although I’m optimistic, both the Red Sox and Rays are improved. One of the biggest differences in this yankee team will be defense. Gardner is the best fielding CF they’ve had since Bernie, Nady is much better than Abreu and Teixeira will really aid Jeter’s propensity to throw some balls in the dirt. Add in the much improved SP and they should win 5-10 more games than last year and they still won 89.
-
Met fans optimism has returned……it must be April!!!
Good luck guys!
-
LETS -GO- YANKEES!!
-
I cant wait until we play the Phillies and Braves so we can manhandle them and take back our rightful place on top.
GO METS!!!
But back to the NFL..
You all know how much Al Davis loves speed there is a mock draft out there where Al Davis takes DHB and The Jags take Maclin, It gets better AND Crabtree falls out of the top 10.
Trade Up Then? -
Thank God. I don’t particularly follow baseball, but anything to get away from the pre-pre Draft hell that is March Madness.
Baseball / the draft all of April, gotta love it.
-
Bent….
It’s weird….I am the only Yankee/Jet fan from my neighborhood.
I thought I was by myself…….I actually respect the Met fan….I understand the hearbreak being a Jet fan….I just dont know how the Jet/Met fan lives that tortured life….lol
-
AKA Drew-
I have spent many winter nights drunk and pissed…
O yea I am also a Knick Fan. yea I myself am surprised I am still sane. -
AKA,
No disrespect, but are you insane? The Mets don’t have enough offense? You realize they scored the most runs last year in the NL? The problem last year was the pen and it was fixed.
All the people you mentioned besides Delgado (Perez, Maine, Tatis) either had an awful year last year or won’t be a factor because they are coming off the bench this year. And even Delgado was terrible the first half of the season.
Realistic questions would be: Will Murphy/Shef put up what Tatis did? Will Pelfrey continue to be solid? I’m definitely not worried about Perez or Maine recreating their 08 numbers since they were average at best.
Enjoy third place though.
-
This just in……
The Yanks will have HOF Whitey Ford throw the 1st pitch out to HOF Yogi Berra next week to open up the new cathedral in the Bronx …..
The Mets will have Mr. Met throwing out the 1st pitch (while planes take off above) to ring in the new Citi Field….
Classic Mets…..lol

Baseball turns it backs on the fans???? Let’s talk about our beloved JETS and their rip off PSL fees for the right to buy tickets to their games??? An investment they call it. Boy that sure is fan friendly.
And now we have them moving summer training camp to NY State so none of their fans can see them practice. Two brilliant moves by a fan friendly NFL franchise!!!!!
And of course we can also talk about the playoff games played at night (for ratings) while their fans freeze in the stands. Another fan friendly move.
An just wait until they add 2 games to the schedule, both in December rather than August. Again from the fan friendly NFL.
And just wait, after the JETS sucker in whatever fools are stupid enough to pay the PSL fees, they will raise ticket prices to $200 or more per game plus parking will go to $50.
Watch it on TV! That way you can shut it off when they come up with a “no show” game.
-
Just buy the 50 inch screen and watch the games at home. I gave up my seats 3 years ago and now go to 2 games a year…..
It saves me money and a headache

Throw penalty flag if the Jets abandon Florham Park training facility
Posted by The Star-Ledger Editorial Board April 05, 2009 5:07AMOn his way to work each day, Joseph Cecala drives past the Jets’ gleaming new practice facility in Florham Park, hoping to catch a glimpse of a player or two. He hasn’t had much luck. And that’s not likely to change if his favorite NFL team — as expected — moves its summer training camp to upstate New York.
New coach Rex Ryan, an old-school guy who is trying to break a 40-year Super Bowl jinx, wants his players warehoused in dorms, with curfews and strict supervision, and there is no housing at the training complex in Florham Park. Rather than allow players to sleep in a nearby hotel, the Jets are looking at colleges in Ithaca and Cortland.Like thousands of other Jets fans in North Jersey and the surrounding areas, Cecala and his son, Joseph Jr., who live in Morris Plains, would have spent a few summer afternoons watching the Jets work out in Florham Park. But now . . .
“Tell ‘em to move back to Long Island,” Cecala says. “Maybe I’ll become an Eagles fan. Training camp will be closer (LEHIGH UNIVERSITY).”
First, the Jets yanked the team from the heart of its Long Island fan base at Hofstra University and moved it to North Jersey. Then, they socked their long-suffering fans with personal seat licenses at the new stadium. Now, they’ll make those same fans drive four hours to training camp, the only time during the season when they can watch practices.
Florham Park mayor Scott Eveland shrugs at the summer abandonment. As a former high school football coach, he says “it’s about wins and losses, not our feelings.” Eveland forgets he is now the “coach” of Florham Park. He should be a voice for the fans and businesses in his town, not a mouthpiece for the Jets.
Somebody should be looking out for Jets fans. The Jets sure aren’t.
“They haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1969,” Cecala says, “but they keep dumping on their fans.”
It’s a wonder they have any fans left. -
Gotta chime in on this one…. Let’s go Yankees!
-
Any news if Yankees are getting rained out? Baltimore has light rain.
-
Drew..
The Mets are NOT intimidated by the Phillies at all. Look at the head-to-head record the past 2 seasons. The Mets dominate them heads up, just so you don’t continue to use that argument against educated baseball fans
-
BTW…Nick Lachey (yes…that Nick Lachey) just threw out the first pitch in Cincy. I probably would’ve just walked out of the stadium if I was a Reds fan.
-
GO METS!!!
Thanks For That Fact Brendan I knew we are winning overall I just didnt have the facts. -
The Ed(itor)
– Point well taken, and I will not dispute that the Jets have sh-t on us since 1970. Like the article you posted states….It’s a wonder the NY Jets have any fans left. However my comments earlier were not just about a single localized team and its fan base. I was talking more specifically about the broader fan base, based on all 30 teams.
-
Brendan????
The Mets record against the Philles is 17-19 the last 2 seasons…..I guess that is domination to an educated baseball fan like yourself
Why do you make a comment liek that before doing a little research? ….Wow that was poor!!
-
Nick Lachey or Mr. Met??? Both losses in my opinion
-
I much prefer football (though it’s been hard being a Jet fan). But baseball is on a human scale where size mainly doesn’t matter, it has the best tradition, best stats, best stadiums and is played at a slow pace on spring and summer days.
-
I meant to type 3 seasons. Mets went 11-7 against the Phillies in both 2006 and 2008, which is a considered beating them pretty handily. they went 7-11 against them in 2007. I don’t know where you got your figures, but they’re a bit off. They’re .500 against them the past 2 years and in the past 3 years they are 29-25. Maybe not dominating, but consistently winning series is what I care about, which is what they do.
-
Drew,
Are you joking? I’m sorry that the Yankees are too business-like to have the insight for a mascot like Mr. Met (who is widely accepted as the greatest mascot of all time). Have fun sitting with the suits because the Yanks priced out all their real fans to pay for their ‘cathedral’.
-
Go Mets!!!!
-
I was just reacting to your dominating quote bud….
The fact is they have crapped the bed with the Braves in their review mirror in the past and now they have done it twice in a row with the Phillies….
I was making a little joke about Mr Met…I didnt mean to ruffle your feathers…. Speaking of feathers the SD chicken is the best mascot ……hands down….lol
I dont know about other fans but my seats have gone up $8.00 a game. I have 12 game package so I will spend an additonal $96.00 to sit in my cathedral….Not bad!
-
Average ticket price in Citi- $36
Average ticket price in New Yankee Stadium- $74
-
sigh…the last memory of the Mets in the playoffs is STILL Beltran, with the bat on his shoulder, staring at a 3rd strike against St. Louis.
“same as it ever was…”
“…and your days go by…”
-
Total overblown numbers….
The Yanks have 1,000 extra seats (most are overpriced comfort seats aka…Championship seating) that are being paid for by the “suits” as you call them.
Eliminate those seats that no real fans sits at or will pay for and the average ticket price is 44 dollars.
Again if you do a little homework things make a little more sense
-
10,000 extra seats by the way
-
Oh, so if you don’t count 10,000 seats the yankees are so cheap!
That’s like saying ‘well….if you don’t count the expensive seats at citifield the average price is only $25!’
Why spend $1.5 billion so your stadium looks exactly the same as the one you are about to rip down?
-
Brendan- Mets in comparison to the Yankees have no history or success. The NL in general bores me, but I hold no ill will towards the Mets. Yet here you are questioning every decision the Yankees make. I don’t think the Yankees decisions should concern you. Worry about your own team who just stranded bases loaded when they had 2 on and 1 out at one point.
-
JAGG I don’t hate the yankees, just fans that crap on the Mets all day. To say they have no history or success is a little much tho. They were the first NY team to have a million person attendance in a single season.
Hah do we really need in-game updates? I’m watching, and we’re winning with Johan chugging along. Just settle in and wait for 4 o’clock to roll around.
-
Bendan….
I like our little arguments….They are usually fun but this one bores me. I am not sure why you are continuing this debate but since you did……..
The reason they build it the same is the Yankees and their fans are proud of the tradition they have and want to replicate everything they have accomplished with the new stadium….
The Mets….. they chose to run from their history (which I dont blame them for) and built a stadium that looks more like Ebbets field and its Brooklyn Dodger history.
My friends that are Met fans went to Citi field and while they liked the stadium overall felt like they were at an away game since it didnt have a Mets stadium feel…No tradition or even colors that represent the Mets…..
Maybe they should have had a shrine to the beloved Mr. Met….That would be a huge draw
-
I don’t rate success by attendance, but owners do, so I see your point. Johan is pitching a nice game.
-
I can see why the Met fan hates the Yankee fan…..I feel the same about Giant fans crapping on us.
Like I said ealier…I as a Jet fan can respect the Met fan but they are insane in their predictions….this includes you Brendan.
-
Hah the colors of the stadium? In case you weren’t aware the Mets had Red upper deck seats, green mezz seats, blue loge and orange lower level. So I doubt your friends really care about the colors of the place. It’s beautiful brick and green steel. And I absolutely loved Shea. True, it was a complete dump, but it was our dump and I have tons of happy memories in that place. But it had run it’s course, and now the Mets have a state-of-the-art stadium.
As for the Brooklyn Dodgers comment, When the Dodgers skipped town for the West Coast an entire fan base was left out in the cold. (In general) They didn’t want to cheer for the Yankees, who they mostly hated, so they were left in baseball purgatory. So when the Mets became a franchise, many of these Dodgers fans became Mets fans. That is why the Wilpons felt that it was a good idea to borrow some ideas from Ebbett’s Field. The Jackie Robinson Rotunda is very, very nice and honors one of the most important sports figures in American history, so I’m not going to be upset that the Mets chose to honor him.
-
And just so you know I’m not taking any of this to heart, I also like our spirited debates on here. Baseball season brings out the bulldog in me, there’s nothing I can do to stop it. You should see me deal with Pats/Giants fans, it’s a bloodbath.
-
I know what you mean about Pats Fans the ones I deal with I crush..
And I dont wanna crush my cousins who are Giants fans. -
I didnt say they hated the colors of the stadium seating just that the stadium didnt have as much Orange and Blue as they expected overall.
I understand the Mets history and Brooklyn as that where I was raised but its been almost 40 years since that happened. aliitle more Mets a little less Dodgers.
Fact is just as I hate the Giants fan you should hate the Yankees fan. Were obnoxious, arrogant and have winning and tradition on our side to back it up….. Again I dont hate the Mets I just like gettting the fans riled up…..
-
Oh and Drew, the first pitch at Shea will be Tom Seaver throwing to Mike Piazza.
-
oooo Drew just got Pawned.
Hey Brendan you see K-Rod’s first save in a mets Uniform. -
Yes, along with Johan being Johan, Putz sawing off bats in the 8th, and Big Murf doing his thing. Very happy with how the team looked today.
