Rich Cimini reports that Leon Washington is looking for … brace yourselves … no seriously … gird your loins … ok … ready?

… is believed to be seeking a long-term extension worth at least $4 million per year.

“Things are going,” Washington said. “The main thing that we have and they have is we both want to get something done. The Jets have been expressive of wanting to get something done. The Jets have done the right thing traditionally with Jerricho (Cotchery), Kerry Rhodes, with guys who have played well for this organization and have done the right thing.”

That’s it?

A contract that averages four million per year? Guys! Don’t just throw the money at him, put it in a rocket launcher!!!

that will be a great deal for the production he gives us week in and week out……he’s the only homerun hitter we have at this point and giving him a extension is a no brainer…………..much respect for leon for not being greedy.

  2. avatar JetObsessed2 says:

    seriously!

  3. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Let’s hope he doesn’t read this and let his feeling of worth grow.

  4. avatar Lance Mehl says:

    ridiculous! do this now ..

what’s more interesting is what to do with Thomas Jones?

  5. avatar mr.die-hard jets fan says:

are you serious? what the hell are they waiting for

  6. avatar Ranger Rob says:

Can we sign him for 10 years at that rate?

  7. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

    Are you joking?
    Is that really it?

Gee I met Leon back in January at the Freehold Mall and after speaking with him, he seemed to be a very bright guy. However after reading this article I guess I was wrong about how smart he is.

  8. avatar LeeToon says:

wow Jets-fan-4-life! Why would you question a man’s intelligence because he’s being reasonable? It’s about time these athletes start understanding that times have changed in this country and everyone needs to be a bit more realistic with money. The only people that these ridiculous salaries affect are us the fans. We are the one who pay for them.

  9. avatar ED says:

Very reasonable team player. If the Jets F this up, I’m a Giant fan.

  10. avatar ESD says:

This may be the most reasonable salary I have ever heard any professional sports player ask for in my life.

  11. avatar Ken O Brien says:

Im sure this will sound ridiculous to some of you, but at this point they should see what WR they could get for TJ, sign another back for cheap to split carries evenly between washington. Washington is a beast who might not be able to carry the entire load, but half or more of the carries is all we need I think

  12. avatar 96debacle says:

I will be very happy to sign Leon and not lose such an explosive weapon. although i do not believe he will ever be a full time #1 RB.

    Leon,
    Please prove me wrong :)

  13. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

It says at least 4 million a year. Key word being LEAST. Let’s not get hung up on his kindness or stupidity until a deal is done and we see it.

  14. avatar Igs says:

Did I ever tell you guys how much I like this kid? He’s asking for a fitting contract for a guy who has lots of potential but is not a full timer. Wow. Does Leon have an ego?

  15. avatar Fred says:

How much did Sproles end up getting? Like 7 a year? It’s extremely hard t believe he’s only wants 4 million a year becuase of what Sproles got, and his overall value to this team.

  16. avatar Thomas says:

I believe sproles got about 6.6 million and thats from his franchise tag. I don’t see why its so extremely hard to believe he only wants 4 million. It’s not about how much to make in a year, its about how much to make in many years. I think 4 million is actually slightly high.

  17. avatar Thomas says:

and dont compare leon to sproles, dont you know that leon has publicly said he doesnt like it… :)

  18. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

He is a great guy, give him the 4.5 for the next 6 years and call it a day. He is not stupid, he is just a team player. I guess Jets Fan For Life is not a real true fan, why would you down someone for being a team player and getting paid?

  19. avatar BigKatFan says:

well…..you get what you pay for.

  20. avatar RKNYC says:

Haven’t we seen Cimini report incorrect amounts before?

Isn’t that what scared us with Favre and Jenk and Woody because Cimini comes out with the wrong salaries?

I’m thinking he is off $2 mil a year for Leon…maybe it’s $5 mil per.

He is worth at least $5 million a year and he’ll get nothing less from what I can see.

  21. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

    Let’s get something straight.

Leon should be signed to a long term contract, and he should be paid more then $4 million a year! Yes he is a smart guy, but if he asks for $4 million a year he may not get it. Leon should be asking for more then he is worth (character issue or not that’s just smart business). Let’s say $5 million a year so there is room to negotiate down to the amount he truly wants or statistically deserves. Why should he be short changed, when you got guys who are making lots more and they are not as productive? He knows the team wants him, he knows that he is the top offense star player for years to come, and he should know that the team would be stupid and ridiculed for years if they traded him away this early in his prime.

Oh and for the record I’ve been a die hard fan for over 30 years so my criticism of this team is well justified especially for the time of my life I’ve invested in the New York Jets. I’ve see players come and go and it’s not often that a player of Leon’s caliber comes along for this franchise. In the past I’ve compared Leon’s stats, stature, and playing ability to Curtis Martins multiple times. There are lots of similarities some of which Leon betters. If this team ran a feature back offense Leon has the ability to be the horse just like Martin once did (maybe even better).

  22. avatar Bent says:

Is the prospect of underpaying him that enticing? It may just mean that he’ll be perceived as underpaid in a few years and then the Jets might have a contract dispute on their hands at a time when they may or may not be better positioned than they are now to deal with it.

For now, I’m just pleased he doesn’t overvalue himself…that’s where problems start to emerge.

  23. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

There have been some comments posted over the last year that just sicken me.

Either you bleed green and white 100% or your opinion just doesn’t matter because…..

    – True fans do not root for the Giants for whatever reason!
 They are the enemy like the Patriots if not more!

    - True fans do not dismiss the Jets for bad decisions!
 Hey stuff happens, deal and move on!

    And lastly….

    – True fans do not say “oh I’ll go root for another team”!
 If you can’t be fully onboard with this team then just go away!!

This is my team and this is my team owner, and I’m proud of both them!

    J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets!!!!!!
    FOR LIFE!!!!

  24. avatar Pdubbs says:

Leon is the man and possibly our next “Jet fan favorite” like Chrebet and Martin. We need to sign him because he loves this team and will be great for us. This is the leadership we need !

Trade Jones for a pick and take Beenie Wells at 17.

  25. avatar ED says:

Jet-fan-for-life – don’t be crazy. I’ve been a Jet fan all my life, but I still watch and root for the Giants. There is no rule its one or none. To compare the Giants to the Patriots is just crazy. When the Jets play the Giants ofcourse I root for the Jets. But anyone that follows a team/anything blindly is a fool. If the Jets mess this up, they don’t deserve my loyalty, because they’ve screwed us fans SOOOOOOO many times.

  26. avatar scott says:

Dont just pay him, PLAY HIM!

It pained me to not see him get many touches last year.

Check this new game out! It’s becoming the next GLBlitz!

  28. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

You make a lot of really good points Jets Fan For Life, I didn’t mean it they way it looked. I just mean how are you going to down someone for taking just a little less to stay with the team that drafted him, it is not like he is going to be hurting for money if he gets like 12 mill guaranteed. I do agree that the Patriots and then the Giants are the enemy, no doubt about it!

  29. avatar Joe B. says:

    ED -

“There is no rule its one or none.”

Yeah, there pretty much is. Among real sports fans at least. Claiming to be a fan of multiple teams is beyond lame.

  30. avatar Zartan says:

Jets should only pay Leon that money if there going to use him alot more. WR ,RB KR,PR .

  31. avatar Ed says:

Joe, I didn’t know they let children post here. Read my post. What? You only watch Jets games? I watch as much ball as I can, and since the Jets usually suck (yeah, I said it) I don’t let that wreck my season. Your lame for thinking like a child.

  32. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I’m kind of with Ed. I root for a bunch of teams. Usually need to back another team to beat the Pats in the playoffs. I love football. I just hold the Jets much higher than anyother team.

  33. avatar ben says:

    who roots for 2 teams?

  34. avatar Ed says:

Ben: you didn’t root for anyone in the Giant/Patroit Super Bowl? I hate the Patriots. You bet I was a Giant fan that day.

  35. avatar geoff says:

its completely erroneous that you get what you pay for. overpaid is the order of the day, sure there are some who earn some of these crazy salaries but not many. hats off to washington, its not about ego and beating the jones’s, pardon the pun, its about doing a job and doing it well, and at a very good salary. screw the dog eat dog apologists, i for one am sick of it. play football already

  36. avatar geoff says:

also twist my arm and ill root for pittsburgh if the jets are gone, i am the only member of my family that doesnt bleed black and gold.

  37. avatar James in TN says:

The Jets are my favorite team in the NFL and I pull for anybody playing the patriots, dolphins and bills.

If the Jets don’t make the playoffs I pull for a NFC team to win it all.

I see you guys all clmaoring at the low price he gave himself, but you have to realize that the top runningbacks in the league average around 7-8milllion a season.

Leon Washington is a KR/PR/HB. He doesnt get enough touches in the offense anyway. And although it may not seem like alot, but his price is about the highest you will pay for a specialist like him.

Although his value to our team and fans is way more than the money he wants.
