Since we got some of the forms for the TJB20 out late to our panelists, so we wanted to make sure that we posted up everything we could. These are Sean Deegan of JetsInsider.com‘s answers to some of the first questions around the TJB20.
2) Looking back, would the Jets season ultimately have been any different with Clemens or Pennington running the show?
Sean Deegan from JetsInsider.com: Possibly with Pennington. Coming off a very un-Pennington like season a healthy. Chad was determined to show he still had game and obviously did that in Miami. A big reason our season crumbled was due to turnovers by the QB and that probably wouldn’t have been the case with Pennington as he historically has been a very good game manager who rarely gives away the ball. Do I think it would have been a big difference? No but it’s possible.
I don’t think the team would have done much with Clemens as I still to this day am not convinced he’s a very good QB.
3) Given what the cost was for Jay Cutler (two first rounders and a third along with Kyle Orton in return for Jay Cutler and a fifth rounder) do you make a similar trade if you are the Jets?
Sean Deegan from JetsInsider.com: Tough call. Probably not. A straight trade for #17 and it’s a no brainer. However, 2 first rounders and a good player is a high price. There was chatter about #17 and an impact player such as Revis or Harris which I’d also be hesitant to do.
4) Do you like the moves the team has made so far in the offseason? Why?
Sean Deegan from JetsInsider.com: Absolutely. They addressed glaring needs on defense and on paper the defense is much better. I’m a little concerned about the lack of offensive moves especially with the departure of Coles and Baker, but hopefully those voids can be filled by the time camp starts.
5) With Laveranues Coles now gone, who steps in to replace him? Can Clowney make the leap? Is this a position filled via the draft?
Sean Deegan from JetsInsider.com: I think the departure of Coles definitely gives Clowney the opportunity to make his move and based on what you saw from him last pre-season, you have to be excited as he has exceptional speed and has shown soft hands. I believe the Jets will use their top pick to add another WR because at present, Cotchery really is the only proven wideout on the roster. Stuckey has shown flashes but is still a bit raw and Brad Smith has been inconsistent..

Pennington was never appreciated for the complete QB that he trully is. Jet fans and the New York media conveniently ommited the fact that Untill last year, he had not started a season in his NFL carrer without having to rehab a serious injury the year before. Look at the year he had in ’08 AFTER he altered his throwing mechanics with the Jets in the Offseason.
This will be THE FIRST TIME ever he has a chance to string two injury/rehab free offseasons and regular seasonst together. I wonder what the owner, his suck-up and the media will say after throwing him under the bus and Pennington has another NFL MVP like season. On Easter Sunday it is appropriate to say that this will be the cross they are destined to carry.

Pennington is one of the smartest QB’s to ever play the game, however he is not a championship caliber QB!!
Not since his second shoulder surgery anyway.
Unfortunately he never could make the throws when it counted ie. playoffs!

NO!!!!! We would not have been in any different of a situation over the course of the season. Because the trade went down, I accepted it as a fan and enjoyed the ride, especially with the win in NE and Tenn, but also got sick to my stomach over the last 5 games.
Bottom line, because of some of the good throws, we won some games because of Favre and because of the throws, we lost some game because of Favre. The same would have been said about Penny. They would have been different games, but Penny would have never been able to throw some of the bullets Favre did into tight spots that were the difference in games and Penny would have never thrown some of the horrible throws, or at least as many horrible throws and Favre did. Perfect example of a game we would have won with Penny, was the Seattly game. No way are we throwing the ball as insanely as we were in the snow on the road with Penny back there. We would have run the ball down there throats and walked away with a W.

I’m going to look at this from the stand point that we would have seen what we had in Kellen Clemens behind an improved offensive line. I refuse to evaluate Clemens on the swiss cheese line that we put on the field during his eight starts. If we did not trade for Farve and went into the season with Clemens and he did not work out well to be the future in NY then the trade talk for Cutler or a 1st round QB would make sense this year. Now we are a year behind seeing the development of our 2nd round draft pick. I do believe Pennington would have been the game manager that Rex Ryan was looking for like a Trent Dilfer type. Pennington would not turn over the ball and would have been fine with handing the ball off 25-30 times a game to benefit the team.
I am willing to see what Clemens, Ratliff, and Ainge bring to the table. There is a strong QB class coming out next year and if these three fall flat then at least we know for sure. -
given Favre’s fall off late in the season and the alleged correlation with his injury, I do think Clemens would have been a more effective QB down the stretch. Would it have been enough? Who the hell knows? Last season is dead.
Let’s see what the kid can do this season?

I think we got lucky with the Favre trade, even though I were again it.
Clearly, assuming Brady goes down as he did, with Penny on our team and not the Fish, they would not have beaten the Pats as they did and the Pats would likely taken the division. We may or may not have eeked out a wild card with such a weak schedule.
But the key difference is that expectations would not have been as high. Plus, since at worst we would have finished over the bills and fish, Mangini would still be here. IOW, trading for Favre, fairly or not, created an expectation that was only exacerbated by Brady’s season ending injury that culminated with our new HC.
Here’s hoping that this is as good news as I expect it to be.
