Where’s Erik?

Jane McManus wrote on her blog last night that third string QB for the Jets, Erik Ainge hasn’t been around
For the last two weeks, Ainge has not been at the morning workouts at the Jets training facility, or the positional classes that follow. A Jets spokesperson said that the sessions are technically voluntary, but every roster player other than Thomas Jones, currently in a contract negotiation with the team, is there to learn the new system being implemented by new coach Rex Ryan … [Ainge's] agent, James Sexton, did not return several calls seeking a comment on the situation.
Until a reason is given, I’ll give the guy the benefit of the doubt, you never know what could be going on in his personal life. Still, it is a curious development. It’s fair to assume the team is paying lip service to his contention for the starting job, but if there’s any shot at all of him gaining the starter’s job, then you’d imagine someone who ‘gets it’ would be there, otherwise, he must have a pretty good reason not to be there.

Before this guy get thrown under a bus we have to find out what’s the reason he hasn’t showed up
Good. Adios loser.
Sign rex grossman. He started in a superbowl and is better than ainge. (probably better than KC too…)
This is disappointing. I was hoping to see what he could do. Everyone is so high on Ratliff based off the preseason he turned in his second year on the team. I had thought Ainge might have shown enough to be in contention at least for the number 2 job. Doesn’t seem likely now that he isn’t at the facility. Doubt he’ll be on the roster no matter what his reasons for being there are. At the end of the day he will just be too far behind the guys getting the learning in now
Guys, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and all, might be a problem in his personal life, BUT …
I don’t see much talent there anyway …
I’ve been curious about this young man’s talents for quite some time. I still hold on to hope that we will get at least a glimpse of what he can do…..before he ends up being a super star on someone else’s team.
Hoz, I agree 100% with your assessment.
you know your qb situation is tough when people start asking for rex grossman.. geez.
Mike and MIke did a good interview with Sanchez today.. i’m beginning to like that kid more and more..
The kid is a hard worker and is a total team guy…..Has been the case even when the UT fans were killing him for not being P Manning. I am pulling for this kid.
I dont like the fact that the team didnt have a legit reason for him missing 2 weeks. If there was a great reaon for it…..they would have said why he was missing. That is a long time to miss if youre looking to be a starter or at least the back up.
Well we have had the steroid issue , foot and pinky problems, injured reserve, and maybe didn’t have the progress the Jets felt he should make. This could mean that the Jets are drafting a QB (Freeman ?). I can see the Titans sending the Jets a 5th round pick for Ainge, the QB crop is so thin this year, I think there are a few teams that would fork over a fifth. It could also mean, that Brad Smith is now your third string QB, this would be a Rex move, team building, Running the football, a commitment to wildcat.
Let the record show that though it was called a failed steriod test it was really a weight loss pill that he failed for. It wasnt like he was trying to bulk up and cheat. He failed for a similar deal that the NO players and Jesse Chatman failed for last year
The guy couldn’t stay healthy in college, so I’m guessing it’s injury-related.
Well once again Tangini strikes again!
This kid had potential (only due to who coached him in college). Now with being MIA, his roid scandal and injured finger last season he is on his way to becoming a waisted 5th round draft pick!
I commented on his last interview (about two weeks ago)that he just didn’t sound right. I joked that he sounded stoned and should be tested thinking it was alcohol induced. Most weight reducing pills are amphetamins (speed)and are habit forming if used extensively. I really hope this is not the case.
JF4L, you can’t honestly be upset about 5th round pick that doesn’t last with the team. Those are the picks you’re supposed to take a shot with
I love to analyze most moves involving any Jets. I inspect thoroughly before making a decision or judgment on any moves, holdouts, signings, and trades. However, that being said this is totally irrelevant. I know that the men upstairs have said that Erik will have a chance to start and compete for the job, but the truth is he won’t. This is a two horse race (for now……Sanchez? Freeman?) and him not being at the voluntary workouts just make that more evident. More important in the article is that it states that “Thomas Jones, currently in a contract negotiation with the team” Looks like he may be back, no Moreno =(
Jet-Fan-4-Life,
You can only hope for so much from a 5th round pick. I would not blame this on Tangini. Let’s wait and see what the problem is.
Who cares where he is?
Even if TJ is back, why CANT we draft Moreno? for 2010, Leon cant be the only RB on the team…
Perhaps, he is taken some time out to go into rehab for his steriod abuse? Just joking. Hope he is okay.
I do agree with charleyjet though…. Who really cares?
He’s off to a hell of a start with the Jets. Get suspended for steroids, check, take Chad Pennington’s number, check, skip voluntary workouts and classes while competing to be starting quarterback, check.
I hope nothing’s wrong in his personal life. But I suspect he’s just a careless prick.
He was a wasted pick from the get go. I hate to say it, but I told you so. He will never be a NFL starting QB. I just hope Ratliff becomes our starter.
