Cimini notes that Rex Ryan was rather glowing in his praise of Kellen Clemens, liking what he saw both yesterday and today from the young signal caller.
“I thought he looked outstanding today,” Ryan said. “He did a decent job the first day, but I really like how he took charge of that offense today and really brought that unit out. They had a lot of spark. He made some good decisions and he showed poise.”
Jane McManus blogs that that Ryan didn’t stop there, saying some nice things about WR David Clowney, going as far to say that he wasn’t a player he had heard anything about before coming to NY, but saying “All I know is what I see out there and he’s impressive.”

wow bent….

I haven’t been following the blog too recently, so forgive me – but am I in the minority when I say that I want to give Clemens a chance at the starting job this year (as in, don’t draft a QB in the first round)? We drafted this guy in the 2nd round just three years ago and he really has not been given much of a chance. That 2007 team was awful – we can’t possibly be giving up on him due to that season, can we?
Again, forgive me for my naivete on this issue, but I wanted to get the general flavor that most fans have at the moment.

I have said this for 4 months……KC will win this job easily this year. I am not saying he is a great QB but he will beat Ratty out easily this summer.
i am not getting excited over some mini camp throws but I think the kid has got some talent.
Very clever Bent…… Nice!!

Glad to hear some news to the effect that it actually is possible that we might have some talent in our skill positions that haven’t been discovered just yet.
I’m sick of hearing about how bad we need a QB. Odds are that one of the two of them has the capacity to make a decent QB with the proper coaching.
I personally like Ratliff, but whoever wins the job has got my full support. And I hope if it is Clemens that he has a a big chip on his shoulder, cause he really should. -
Baltimore jets….
For some reason Ratty has become the flavor of the month and most fans ( not this fan ) have soured on KC.
Ratty had a nice preseason and KC didnt last year. I still think you cant ignore a QB in the draft if one falls to us as KC is still unproven.
I believe KC will win the job but I dont know if he is ever going to be a top 15 QB. If the team dosent think he can be they have to draft one in the next 2 years.
-
i have a Clemens jersey at home, and no its not from Oregon
that is how i feel bout the QB situation.
we draft a QB in the first round and the only thing we add to this team is another highlight to our famous draft blunders clip that kicks off every draft.
And the JETS fans BOOOOOOOOOOOOO…..
-
KC has more experience than Ratty, at least at this early point.

what I want to know is: where is sd99 with his “clemens is a deranged midget escaped from the circus masquerading as an NFL QB” quote, or something to that effect? I thought it was in the TJB bylaws that sd99 had to comment on KC’s height every time that his name is in the thread of the title!
Just kidding sack.Seriously, I really don’t care which one wins the job, whoever plays better deserves it.
-
It’s day 2 of mini camp. Clemens is worthless. Get me Sanchez.
-
KC/DC
Get used to it. Clemens to Clowney is gonna cause a whole lot of trouble for defensive backs, leaving trail of pass interference laundry in his wake and touch downs ahead!!!
Love Ryan’s enthusiasm… it’s contagious!
-
i agree with most of you guys. KC should get the job. We invested in him with a 2nd rounder, he’s been here for three years with the same OC, he knows the system. When he played in 8 games in ’07, it was behind a terrible O-Line with no running game. We can’t judge him on that. There is absolutely no reason to give up on him yet. I really hope we do not take a QB in Round 1. Then we would just be starting over with another rookie. Whats the point? If KC cant handle the job this season, then next year we can turn to Ratty and/or draft a QB.
-
While it’s too early to decide much at the moment (still april), I’m glad Clemens is having a strong minicamp. He isn’t perfect, but he has way too many detractors who want his head on a platter. Give him a chance to compete for the job.
-
everyone was talking about Flaco but if i remember correctly, he only got the job cause the kid from Ohio state got sick. I bet anyone that KC will have a better year than Flaco in 09
-
KC has to be the frontrunner. I mean aside from some garbage time in a meaningless preseason game was has Ratliff shown. KC has at least show glimpses with the obvious example being the game he almost led a comeback against the Ravens. Let’s see what he can do now with a good line and good running game.
-
That Clemens comeback against the Ravens was halted by dropped balls. The Jets need to get a big play receiver that can catch in the clutch.
-
The thought of Stafford or Sanchez is ridiculous! The Jets do not need a QB…they need to rally round the “winner” and start a legacy built on a tradition of hard work and a supportive fan base! (ie. The Steelers)

N.Y.C.P.E:
I think SD99 has gone by the wayside. I’m still waiting for him to pick a QB between Payton Manning, Chad Pennington and the guy in Boston. I want him think who Basset will pick as the best of the three QB’s this year.
-
While we are lambasting SD99 – He loves Percy Harvin – gross.
-
mini camp pockect aint closing in qbs have eight yards behind the line no touchy when the heat is on in the fall and our big linemen get pushed back 6’2 aint gonna cut it we been down this road before now unless he grew we can excpect the same and our linemen dont deserve to get a fast ball upside the back of their head.. clemens is knowen for such fastballs
-
Hey I have SD99′s back-
remember he touted Matty Ice all off season- and look, it was a great prediction! -
I still have confidence in KC as a starter and he’s DEFINITELY got a big chip on his shoulder. Isn’t that really what footballs all about?
-
Geez, I feel the love. Look, all you have to do is review KC’s stats in 2007, his second year as a pro, and see that he was awful. He did not play a complete game and he only cracked 60% completions in one start, against the 1-15 Dolphins. He had a terrible QBR, I believe it was the 6th worse of the decade among starters at 60.9. His completion % was a terrible 52%. He had 5 TDs to 10 INTs and he was sacked 27 times. Everyone likes to say that it was all the O-line’s fault, but he played against Miami, Cleveland, KC. Oh, and everyone touts his performance against the Ravens, but nobody mentions that the Ravens were 20th against the pass in ’07. I saw a tentative QB in the pocket, a guy who locked on to his no. 1 receiver, who couldn’t quickly go through his progressions and who rabbited every time the rush got close. Plus, at 6-1 5/8, he’s far less than ideal height as a QB. His collegiate performance and measurables did not warrant a 2nd round selection, but the Jets are paying for Mangini’s and Tanny’s poor decision to trade up to get him. IMO, it’s time to cut the cord, something the Dolphins have done with John Beck, who was a higher draft pick, had a better college career and has better pro stats, mostly obtained when he was a pure rookie. If Parcells saw enough in Beck to render him redundant, why do we have to give an inferior KC yet another chance to prove himself? That KC can run the offense well without a pass rush in mini camp is meaningless.
hank/naples, I’ve already said that I’ll take Peyton and Brady over Chad and use Football Outsiders’ DYAR as the measurement. You’re just too chicken to use an objective statistical measure to assess Chad’s performance against his peers. And, I’m willing to bet that Bassett, a big fan of FO, would concur that DYAR is the most objective measure of QB performance.
Dknyj, wow, what insightful analysis…Harvin is “gross.” Plus, you have completely misrepresented my position on Harvin. I don’t want a WR in the first round, I want Josh Freeman. But, if the Jets take a WR and Crabtree is gone, I like Harvin over the other WR’s. But, I have tended to discount Maclin because I don’t expect him to be at 17. I like Harvin a little more because I think the Jets need Harvin’s versatility more. But, there’s no denying that Maclin is a good prospect. I just like Harvin more than DHB, Nicks, Britt and any other WR not named Crabtree. In any event, I think Harvin’s pot issue will make him slide out of round 1. Too bad, some team will draft a WR with great potential, if he can smooth out the rough edges of his personality. But, I’m okay with Maclin, if he’s there. If the Jets don’t draft a QB, I’d rather have Moreno over the likely WR picks or trade down (but, I’m okay with Maclin, who won’t be there at 17).
Mehl56, thanks for the shout out. I have nothing personal against KC, I just think that he’s not an NFL-caliber QB and the Jets will suffer if he starts. I much rather hand the reins to Ratliff and see what he can do because I think I know what KC can do and it’s not much.
-
No way the Jets draft a QB with 3 young QBs on the roster – not in the 1st round and not in any round. If they add a QB, it needs to be a veteran.
Clemens will win the starting job early – starting NFL experience matters and it will show during the pre-season competition.
Clemens height could put a ceiling on his peak development – short guys like Drew Brees are the exception, not the rule. But good height and a strong arm are NOT sufficient to play QB in the NFL.
Clemens will struggle IF the NY Jets do not add a veteran WR (Boldin, Ocho-Cinco, Edwards) – Cotchery is solid #2 and Stuckey and Clowney are “good” talents, but none of those guys are “great” and none are big, red-zone targets.
Ratliff has a great arm and good height, he will be a solid back-up to Clemens.
Football Outsiders has some interesting numbers at the team level, but there is NO stat that captures QB play. QBs can only be measured by studying film — you need to see their pre-snap read, their command of the offense, their anticipation of passing windows, their ability to hold a safety, their ability to make progressions, their ability to make a hot read, and ultimately their ability to deliver the ball accurately and on time.
Bottom Line
We are only at the beginning of the beginning of Clemens development. He has flashed some potential, now let’s see if the kid has matured since the last time he played. Only regular season playing time will tell – there is no other way. -
in that raven game everybodys judging on. watch the tape not once but twice he hit our own linemen in the back of the head plus he had three knock downs at the line if anyone thinks this kid is going to be our starter than man wake up really watch some tape before claiming hes all that now if we ran the westcoast off maybe just maybe but he is not nor never was and never will be a pocket qb he just gets to scared he was always on the run and not because of our own linemen who was also scared not of the other team but their own qb just watch them it look like they were really trying to duck them selfs

Clemens keeps up Pace?
The young Quarterback and veteran linebacker have roomed together since last season. “His snoring is getting out of control” said Pace.
