Buzz: Sanchez Guaranteed Top 5?
It’s the week before the draft, which means the interwebs are abuzz with rumors, smokescreens, likes and dislikes, and trades — all related to who’s taking whom, who might not take whom and who wants and doesn’t want whom.
Well, one of the new and most fascinating rumors is that Mark Sanchez could be headed to Washington.
There are mounting rumors and reports that the Washington Redskins are interested in making a move into the upper reaches of the draft for a crack at USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Some league insiders, who are assessing the Redskins’ sudden interest in Sanchez in comparison to the team’s past pre-draft antics, believe that it’s very possibly a smokescreen.
Also, mentioned in the story is top 5 team Seattle, as well as a rumor that Denver is potentially interested in trading up for the USC QB. The real story, however, comes from NFL Live. I was watching and heard Todd McShay note that for the Jets to trade up into the Top 5 to get Sanchez would cost a 1, 2 and a 4. So I ask you, given that there are as many negatives for Sanchez as there are positives, is it worth it?

NO WAY! Too many picks for too little talent. And 3 stud QBs will be in next year’s draft.
-
well he does meet the desired height requirement (just kidding SD99!)
why does this have the same feel as the- 2007 Brady “I’m the last one in the draft room waiting awkwardly with my girlfriend” Quinn. Lots of talk but is anyone really gonna pull the trigger.
and to answer your question basset: HELL NO
-
and the answer is for you too corey… my bad!
-
To move into top 5, only player I’d do that for is Crabtree. We’re really in trouble if we pick a QB in round 1. We’re a win now team, and that doesn’t help us win now. Get KC some weapons, and let the aggressive D and strong run game control games.
-
I do not get that feeling about Sanchez at all Chrebookie. Starting with the fact that Sanchez will not literally be in the draft room and ending wiht the fact that he has been a steady climber on draft boards (not someone who started out as the presumptive no. 1 and fell from there) and flat out will not last past 13.
In any event, I’m getting a strong sense that our first round pick (barring a trade) is going to be . . . Brandon Pettigrew (I reserve the right to flip that to Moreno if Thomas Jones is dealt). Unless a defensive player rated extremely high falls in our lap (I’m talking BJ Raji high) we are going to draft on the offensive side of the ball. Maclin and Crabtree will be gone, as will Sanchez and Stafford. Meaning we can either reach for a WR (Nicks, Britt, DBH, Harvin) or draft a running back when we have two very good backs on our roster and the glaring offensive deficiencies are in our passing game (again, i reserve the right to amend that if Jones gets dealt on or before draft day). Now I know that Pettigrew is not that exciting, but for a ball control offense, having two stud tight ends, and one that is used as an in line receiver like Keller, would be interesting. And, Pettigrew is fair value at 17, the consensus no. 1 te who fills a need (i.e. tight end that can block). I know its not a sexy pick, but I think it might just be the most likely/logical (assuming he doesn’t get picked by the Bills at 11 or someone else above us).

In short: NO
In homage to Peter King, here are a few things I think I think (though no one pays me to think them, I just do that on my work’s dime):
1) Jets are not going to get Sanchez. There are enough teams that believe the hype to make the competition for him fierce. And the Jets simply don’t have enough ammunition to win that battle – that is, if they want to get involved in the first place.
2) Josh Freeman is not only a reach at 17, he’s a reach at 37. It scares me that so many draft pundits have the Jets selecting this year’s Byron Leftwich.
3) The Jets would love to trade out of that spot and get a few more picks.
4) To hell with the past blunders with TEs. If the Jets can’t move down, and Maclin is not there, they should run to the podium and pick Brandon Pettigrew. He would be a good value, fill a dire need and give the line another stud blocker.
5) I am also scared by rumors of the Jets picking DHB, Chris Wells or Percy Harvin. Bust, bust, bust. Someone please look at game film. And medical records.
6) I don’t know what kind of transition he can make to the NFL, but how fun would it be watching a DB trying to guard 6′ 6″, 229 lb Ramses Barden on a jump ball slant in the end zone? He could make any young QB look good – I think I may even be able to throw that TD pass.
7) I would not be unhappy at all if the Jets went defensive or offensive line with the first or second pick. Those guys are not getting any younger.
8) Make Thomas Jones happy. Trade him for a draft pick. Use that draft pick in one of the deepest drafts for RBs in recent years. -
the jets will be set back for many yrs if we trade a 1st 2nd and 4th rd pick to a unproven QB that lacks expierence in that case we could of had push harder for cutler.
-
Although QB evaluation always involves a lot of tea leaf reading, I just don’t believe Sanchez is an “elite” QB prospect (same with Stafford). On the physical side, he lacks ideal height and arm strength and on the developmental side, he has a thin QB resume (not many starts) and is a junior. So, because he’s not an “elite” prospect, he’s not worth the price. Let me put it this way, if Jay Cutler, a guy with a decent NFL resume, wasn’t worth mortgaging the franchise’s future, then why pull the trigger for Sanchez? Let Dan Snyder do that, then acquire Campbell for a 4th rounder.
-
HOZ,
My thoughts exactly!
-
peter
percy harvin is going to be a stud but unfortunately he dosen’t fit our style of play now if the jets are not planning on resigning leon this kid fits the mold.
-
HELL FREAKIN’ NO.
Who in their right mind would give that much up for this dude? It’s absolute lunacy.
-
You could probably trade down and still get Pettigrew, but why do that when you can get a great blocking TE on Sunday (Gronkowski, Quinn or Pascoe).
Who are the three stud QBs next year that some rave about? I see McKoy and agree. Bradford is a junior and may not come out. Who is the third? Tebow? I doubt he’s a first rounder. Great college QB in a winning program, but he’ll get killed in the pros running like he does. If McKoy and Bradford are there, they’re top 10 picks and I’m hoping we won’t be in the top ten.
-
Hoz,
I am not a huge fan of Percy Harvin, although I could see him thriving somewhere like New England where he can catch swing passes all day and consistently turn them into first downs.
-
sackdance 99
if the redskins trade up to land cutler i would send them a 4th rd pick for jason campbell in a heartbeat.
-
Not sure I agree with Corey’s last line: “there are as many negatives for Sanchez as there are positives”. I think the only big negative is that he didn’t start as many college games as you’d like to see from a top QB prospect. No, his arm strength isn’t elite, but he surprised scouts at his Pro Day with his ability to make strong throws, so I don’t think this is a major concern anymore.
Personally, I wish Sanchez had stayed in school one more year, because he could’ve addressed the experience issue and become a fantastic prospect. But I’m not going to fault him given his current draft projection.
-
Iggy, the 2010 QB class will be highlighted by Sam Bradford, who I think many would have projected as No. 1 this year. Tebow is what he is and will be an experiment for some team. McCoy will likely not be a top pick based on measurables. He weighs in at a tick over 200 and does not have a rifle arm (not to mention he had nearly a 1:1 td-int ratio in 2007, albeit he followed that up with a tremendous 2008). If someone like a Jimmy Clausen can put it together next year for the Irish he will leapfrog McCoy. Not a direct comparison, but think Carson Palmer putting it together his final year after struggling at USC.
-
Wouldnt have wanted him at 17 let alone trading up to get him…..
He is 2nd round talent in a weak QB draft.Thats why he came out this year…. a def NO!!
-
Heck, if that’s the price for Sanchez, then offer a 1st rounder for Leinart, who was a much better prospect than Sanchez is now. Who knows, the Cards might take even less and Leinart definitely needs a change of scenery.
-
Not worth it. Period. Also, Josh Freeman or Darrius Heyward-Bey at 17 have been giving me nightmares. If I see Freeman holding up the Green and White #09 on the stage on April 25, my comment to that post could very well be my last……..joke
-
Sanchez played this draft perfectly…..He saw next year there was a chance he might be the 3rd or 4th rank QB…..He is a smart kid and understands a pro offense I just dont love the kid at all.
Bradford, McCoy, Snead, even guys like Clausen might have a big year could all be top QB next year…… let alone Huge big arm QBs like Pat Devlin and Tim Hiller
I wouldnt cry if we took him at 17 but no way in hell do we trade up for him

OFF TOPIC:
Massive tackle Mike Kracalik, a former Jet who was one of the “tryout” players participating in last week’s minicamp, was re-signed by the Jets Monday afternoon.
The 6-8 337-pound Kracalik, who played at San Diego State, was originally signed by the Jets in 2005 but was waived after training camp. He spent the last three seasons (2006-08) with the Ravens, appearing in four games.
A nice depth move. A big massive OT to replace woody if he goes down, if one of the guards go down, woody can move inside, maybe even play center too.
-
Kracalik sounds…large.
Also – I wouldn’t mind moving down and drafting Kenny Britt. Check out this great piece by Tom Luicci of the Star-Ledger on how this “personality issue” has gotten out of control:

Sanchez knows offense which may make up for what little physical limitations he has, but a 1,2 and a 4?!? I would love to see Snyder make yet another bonehead move here.
Sackdance, I agree with you on making a play for Leinart. I think he’s got game he just needs a change. -
If the Jets wouldnt give those picks up for Cutler than they would be idiots to give them up for an unproven guy like Sanchez.
-
The more I think about it, the more I think that Knowshon Moreno is the next Emmitt Smith. He isnt the fastest guy out there, he isnt the flashest guy, but he gets it done. Every time I watched him I thought how incredible he was. Emmitt slipped because everyone was concerned that he didnt have breakaway speed. If there is anything I saw last year its that young RBs can dominate this league (regardless of breakaway speed). Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson, Felix Jones (i know most of the guys i named are quick, but there are others that aren’t i promise). We are not going to sign TJ and there is not a clear pick for the Jets at 17 at WR. The Jets should trade TJ for a 3rd rounder. Then with their 2nd and new 3rd trade up in the 2nd and draft a WR to go along Knowshon. That is my two sense.
-
this would be dumber than trading 13 & 22 for 4 to draft D-Rob
-
Moreno at 17 would put a big smile on my face on saturday
-
I don’t know if the Jets can get a 3rd for Jones, but Moreno would be a great replacement. Besides being a very shifty and tough runner, he is probably the best pass catching RB in the draft. He and Leon would be a nice tandem.
-
I always thought the dumbest thing about the D-Rob move was that he had a pre-existing knee injury…that’s not good for a DT. When it finally came out, I just scratched my head. But, then I started to get the same “bone-on-bone” knee condition and can’t imagine how a 300 lb DT could handle it. Heck, I always thought D-Rob was talented and should never have been an NT, especially with his knee, but trading up for a guy with a bad knee? Geez! Not a brilliant move.
-
This would be a disaster. Like, Hindenburg-level disaster.
Making a move like this leaves the jets with 4 picks. FOUR! How in God’s name can we build this team’s depth and inject some youth into the roster with 4 draft picks? Instead of drafting one guy who probably wouldn’t even start next year, why not draft two guys who have future-pro-bowlers written all over them (like….Moreno and Jarron Gilbert, or trade back and pick up Britt and Brown from UCONN – not debating where they’ll be picked, but just making the point that these are guys we could lose out on by making the trade).
No way in hell do I make that trade to move up.
-
Mikey913, I’m with you. I don’t usually like the idea of taking a RB in round 1 – they have the shortest careers of any position, and you’re usually going to split carries anyway – but I think Knowshown is an exceptional back. The man had 2700 yards and 30 TD’s the last two years – in the SEC! He’s super-quick, tough as nails, and loves to compete. I can’t think of a better back for a Rex team
-
i dont think there is a player in the 2009 that is worth trading up for. there just isnt as big of a drop off between the elite players and the good players in this draft. every player in the top 5, to me, has a lot of question marks. if anything, we should look to trade down.
-
Maybe someone can help me out here. Don’t know what the TJ contract is like, but he is not likely to be with the team next year correct? And they almost certainly will not renegotiate for this year. Is a trade likely? What’s the move here? I know these workouts are voluntary, but do they expect him to show up without a new deal?
-
Way too high of a price for Sanchez. Dan Snyder is the perfect suitor to move up. The question is where he trades up to? As high as Seattle at 4 or possibly Jacksonville at 8?
-
egh…. i would be happy if we fgot sanchez but even happier if we traded up a little later to grap crabtree or maclin and hold on to the forth and maybe give a 5th
-
There is NO WAY the Jets make that move for Sanchez.. Forget QB in this draft. Give KC a year to prove himself or fail. If he proves himself, OK problem solved. If he fails the 2010 QB draft class is MUCH better than this year’s prospects. There is no reason for the Jets to give up a big package of picks to get a QB in the 2009 draft. Particularly, when there are other glaring needs to be addressed. WR, RB, TE OL aand DL depth. The talent in this draft closely matches the Jets needs at these other positions. Reaching for a QB this year makes no sense at all.
-
Sanchez is this year’s flavor of the month. Who knows if he will ever be any good but this summer you would be very popular with a Sanchez doll. So if you want to go out and sell the farm so you could be the most popular kid on the block Sanchez or maybe Freeman is your man.
Picking a QB is like having desert. Its not necessarily the meat and potatoes of the team/meal but it could very well be the best part. We already have KC and BR but we still want more desert . But do we have enough meat and potatoes already to justify us spending all of our money/draft picks on yet another QB? I do not think so.
I personally wouldn’t spend a first day pick on a QB and would look to solidify our depth on the offensive/defensive line first. If by next year we realize the QB’s we have now are not good we could pick from a better variety of QB’s/deserts next year.
-
Selling Leinhart all day long. When Arizona basically tried to hand him the starting job he couldn’t focus on football and Warner beat him out. Schottenheimer’s offense is extremely complex so I doubt any first year QB will be able to be effective (remember how much we had to scale it back for Favre last year) and Leinhart is unlikely to put in the time to learn it based on past history.
The biggest thing in favor of KC and Ratliff is that both of them have time in the system. If the FO feels we HAVE to have a qb, they should realize that it will be a couple years before he can learn the whole offense and be effective.
-
we used to argue if the jets should take Sanchez even if he fell to them…no way we give up all those picks
-
1 word: CRABTREE!
-
Corey, I’m just curious, and I haven’t read all of the posts yet, but what exactly are the negatives for Sanchez? I know lack of experience is one. That’s the only one I know of.
-
not that I advocate moving up but I don’t see any major negatives..
-
I word Mareno, trade TJ. Or better yet have 900K backup hungry to prove to other teams he can carry the rock backing up Leon and knowshon. NO TE’s please in the 1st ever again or K’s in the 2nd. In the 2nd we need a burner WR.
Got to work on Sat. hope that by 5:00pm we still haven’t picked yet.
-
Sanchez is the best quarterback in the draft.
He is not worth that draft package.
The Jets will not give up that draft package. If the Jets stay at 17 they are bound to catch a good player who has fallen through the cracks.
Stay put or trade down.
-
igs,
Sanchez doesn’t have the strongest arm. I think he would struggle with the gusting winds of the Meadowlands. I also think he’s being overhyped because he had a strong surrounding cast of 5 star athletes. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a good pro prospect, but the price to pay to move up and take him is too costly.
-
Liam-You say Bradford will be a top pick, but he’s just a junior and it remains to be seen if he’ll come out. You downgrade McKoy and say he’s not a top pick, while basically not assessing Tebow one way or the other. Then you say IF IF IF when it comes to the Clausen. Sounds like you are agreeing with me that the QB class in 2010 is, if anything, inferior to this years class. I don’t think the NYJ should take a QB in any of the premium rounds and we certainly shouldn’t trade up for any of the guys in this draft. But, I don’t think we should look forward to the QB class of 2010 as if it is vastly superior, when it clearly isn’t, at least at this point.
-
We all seem to agree that we are not going to trade up for Sanchez.
Only reason he is being even cvonsidered that high is because tis a weak QB class, and there is little difference between the elite and good players in the draft.
I say we stay put and see the draft unfold. Heck I wouldnt be surprised if Sanchez fell past 15 on the draft. I see Tampa Bay trying to leap-frog us to nab him.
Hopefully Moreno is still there but I doubt it. The Saints, and Broncos need a running back, even the Chargers might be looking for one to replace LT.
-
The JETS need to take a RB at #17! Moreno is my choice as I don’t want another dud from ohio state.
-
Trading up for a quarterback, any quarterback, with 16 career starts, would be absurd. And I say that as someone who thinks Sanchez is probably the best quarterback in this class. The risk factor is obscenely high. I’m with sackdance, I would much prefer to trade for Matt Leinart (or even Brady Quinn) for a fraction of the compensation it would take to move up for Sanchez.
-
Hey Sackdance,
Won’t you ever admit that you’re a dolphins fan? I’ve seen you on those dolphin boards.
see how stupid this name calling is? I’m not quite sure why you insist on saying i’m a pats fan. Most likely, I suspect you’re too dense to get that my name is joke, crossing the “you’re with me, leather” chris berman story with the only nfl player whose name it would work with.
in any case, shall we stop the name calling?
-
Sanchez isn’t worth it at #17. Jets have Kellen Clemens who was a steal in the ’06 draft. Let’s draft some players in position of need and let KC do his magic.
-
I would trade up to get Sanchez. A #1 and #2 is OK with me. I am a believer in Sanchez. Perfect attitude for NY and for Jets. True gym rat, smart X and Os guy, real leader. Strong (but not cannon arm). Student of game. Played hurt and won. Unlike what some have said, didn’t have great cast with him on offense this year. I am really scared if KC or Ratty fail this year, then we draft a QB next year, sit them for most the year, and we have at least two tough years to slug through. If KC or Ratty become Drew Brees – great – we have tradable asset or great backup. If not, we have our Philip Rivers in waiting. This guy probabaly would have been #1 or #2 overall next year if he played well. Riskier to take him this year but if that is only real flaw, then sit and coach him for a year. At some point if you want one of the top 2 QBs in your draft class, you will need to trade up (unless we take a turn for worse and end up in top 5 picks). Might as well do it now at beginning of new regime and try to peak with team in 3-4 years and have shot at SB.
-
NNNNOOOOOOOO!
give KC a chance. next year there’s a better QB batch and less teams would be needing a franchise QB
-
Its not worth it !!!
The Jets already rolled the dice by missing out on Cutler, and not signing Garcia and Leftwich.
It’s time to stick with what you got and draft a QB next year when the draft class is better!!

yes it is worth it. it is enough of thinking clemens is the man. this is about winning the super bowl….not making the playoffs. i have no idea if sanchez can be that guy. based on what everyone is saying..he has a ton of talent. more than clemens. i’m tired of hearing about how bad the team was in 07 when clemens played. he should have made things better if he was that good. and i don’t want to hear about mccareins drop. please.
you dont win in this league without an elite quarterback. give up the 1,2 , and 4. it’s about quality. we did the same thing in 07 and got revis and harris. not bad. bite the bullet and make the trade.
