Film Room: Josh Freeman Highlights

Here’s a highlight video of Josh Freeman, K-State QB.

  1. Freeman has some amazing tools but, I wonder why he only had five wins this past season. In addition, those five wins were against mediocre teams. He would obviously be a project for any team. We already have three projects.

If he was so great, how come K-State wasn’t able to recruit great talent to surround him. Something is rotten in Kansas.

There are lots of big, fast guys with arms out there. How many are going to be great NFL QB’s.

I’ll pass. If we need a QB, after this year, the real ones will be in next years’ draft.

  2. This guy is going to be a BUST in the NFL. Please stay away from him

  3. 2010 is the year to get a QB, agreed on that..

  4. With a good QB coach freeman is going to be a stud in a couple of yrs write that down fellas

Freeman > sanchez………………..and this is base on when or if both QB reach their full potential

  5. Hoz- How often do people with extreme physical gifts ever reach their full potential? Sanchez has his head totally wrapped around football and could be ready to start in less than a year. People shouldn’t under value that.

  6. First 3 Rds need WR, RB, DL.

I’d even be ok with a TE, or OL mixed into that group…

I really like Duke Robinson at #52, especially with the aging Faneca but it’s starting to appear more and more we need a RB. So, it needs to be Moreno Rd 1 and thne hopefully a WR falls into late Rd 2, or go with Nicks Rd 1 and a Shonn Greene Rd 2.

That being said, I really don’t think a QB makes our Top 5 needs. Not because we potentially don’t need one but I think the top 3 are all overrated and this is one of the weaker Qb drafts in recent memory…

  7. Fast feet but horrible footwork. Release is a bit on the lanky side. I would be fine with this pick at 17 if the FO felt it was the right move. It would at any rate be a good move.

  8. justagreenguy what sanchez do that makes you guys think he is going to be a stud?

he’s going to be leinart pt.2

  9. i really like Freeman and wouldn’t be upset at all if we draft him… we could even grab a RB,WR, or DL at 17 and if Freeman slips toward the end on rnd 1 maybe move back up to grab him

  10. When you get 5 seconds to thorw the ball of course you are going to complete every pass

  11. Tuna.

With only 6 picks, I really feel that moving up, no matter what round is a mistake. Even for the later rounds, we need as much young blood and depth that we can get…I really think they need to find 5 contributors from this group and may need at least 3 starters by next yr and the drafted WR must start this year…no questions.

  12. Not at 17. Trade back four to seven picks get an extra pick and draft him then. I think there is more value at 17 and he could be had later in the first round. I am still optimistic that sanchez will drop within trading reach.

  13. Freeman is not going to slip to the back of round 1. If we’re silly enough to pass on the kid, and Sanchez and Stafford are off the board, don’t expect many other teams to do that, The Buccaneers.

  14. Hoz- Lienart was on a more talented offensive team. What make syou think Freeman will be anything. He is just this years Joe Flacco. I hear all these great things about Flacco, but a cannon means dirt to me. Sanchez can lead men, is used to big crowds, lights up big games, has a capable arm, can run a pro style offense and everyone who has interviewed him has come away going wow he knows football, while what I hear about Freeman is wow this kid has great potential. Sanchez will get better too and Matt Lienart is riding pine behind a Hall of Famer. He would be starting for a lot of teams. Freeman Rothelisberger

  15. I had a does not equal symbol in between Freeman and Big Ben.

  16. Pass. As many folks have been saying for weeks: we already have three unknowns at QB.

  17. JUSTAGREENGUY

you are miss reading my post i never said that we should take freeman at 17 i said he’s going to be a stud in a few yrs under good coaching now sanchez played on a talented team also unlike freeman look how many players on usc is projected to go in the draft and how many players on kansas state……..too make a long story short sanchez is over hype because he plays at usc would freeman get the same reconition if he was their QB i know so.

  18. Hoz, how many of USC’s offensive players are projected to go on day 1?

I dont understand how anybody could not want the best QB in the draft, just weird to me.

  19. Seems very athletic with fast feet, but also very raw in his mechanics.
The arm looks solid, but the video shows him throwing to spots, rather than anticipating windows. Need to see more anticipation throws before considering him a 1st round pick.
Seems like he would be a development project with good upside potential.

  20. I’d rather pass on Freeman — Clemens was very highly touted coming out of college and has never really gotten a chance. he’s had a bunch of years in this system so should blossom this year if given the chance. No doubt Freeman has a gun, and I like the elusiveness in the pocket he showed in the clips — but unless the FO thinks he’s a once-every-five years QB prospect I’d rather see what the current guys can get us — it’d be too bad to stuck with a Drew Brees – Philip Rivers situation where we end up just letting Clemens walk after a very productive year.

I’d rather go WR or D-Line. Wouldn’t be horribly upset if we drafted Pettigrew either if he really is as good a blocker as they say. We could run 2 TE / 2 WR with Leon in the backfield and really have 5 potential receivers on the field if we want to throw. Would be a great play-action package and would free up Keller to be the deep middle-of-the-field threat.

  21. igs

that’s your opinion that he’s going to be the best QB in this draft were everybody else thinks stafford is going to be the best and i didn’t say how many usc players are projected to go in the 1st rd in this draft i said draft period.

  22. exactly hoz, that’s a slanted theory that you’re presenting. Actually USC’s offense wasn’t as high on talent as the Matt Leinart years (though I don’t feel that Leinart is a bust at this point).

But you read the scouting reports you’ll see that the only ything Stafford has over Sanchez is starting time and a stronger arm – not that Sanchez’s is at all weak. sanchez is actually the more accurate and complete of the 2 and you can find plenty of big boards that have him ahead of Stafford. So why on earth would the Jets pass on him if he happens to be there?

  23. Hoz- I’m looking at what I have seen from each of them. Freeman has been described as a poor man’s Jamarcus Russell. If you put them both in a bubble with even teams I still believe Sanchez would be better. That is my opinion. I love Freeman’s tools, but I think drafting purely on potential is very risky and that before Flacco last year he would have been a 2nd rounder. I mean no offense. Plus the fact that Freeman comes out and blames his surrounding cast is really lame. Once I read that I questioned his ability to lead a team.

  24. If you make assumptions from highlight videos youre an idiot. Theres a reason its called HIGHlight. Because it ONLY shows the good parts. But im sure there are many lowlights that we dont see

  25. JUSTAGREENGUY AND IGS

i value you guys opinion on sanchez i have nothing against this guy but expirence i wish he would of stayed in school like coach carrol said because he’s not ready yet………….if the jets trade up to get him i would support they decesion as i am a die hard jets fan but if he’s going to go out and stink up the place im going to boo him out the building as these ticket prices we are playing is outrageous

  26. Agreed on ticket prices and I think he could have used another year. I hope we don’t trade up for anybody, but I do believe Sanchez will suceed. I hope he falls come draft day.

  27. justagreenguy

i love your posts keep up the good work and debates we all benefit from each other knowledge of the game that we love so much……….and best of luck to sanchez jet or no jet or less he’s in our division.lol

  28. AOL FANHOUSE

they are now reporting that freeman has moved into the top 10 prospect in this draft WOW

even i say that’s a big stretch you guys check it out.

  29. Draft excitement is starting to get to me. Sat can’t come soon enough. Pats have way too many picks. Should be an interesting one.

  30. You have a link? I’ll be so happy when this dog and pony show is over and we see these guys take the field.

  31. I personally love this dog and pony show…it is definitely overdone but this excitement gives football some life in the midst of spring.

Leaving the QB aside, because personally I think it would be prudent to stay away from any of these guys- I wonder what percentage of fans would prefer RB ro WR giving the ugly turn the TJ situation can soon take…

  32. First of all, I doubt any of the QBs will fall to us. And trading up to say #9 to get Sanchez, decimates the rest of our draft. We’d be left with Sanchez and 76 plus 115. Also, I see no RB or WR (possible exception: Maclin) worth drafting at 17. I’m thinking Detroit @20, TB @19 and MN @22 would all be interested in trading up, should a QB fall to us. We would net their #1 and a #3 for our #17. After that, you could also take advantage of AZ’s need for a quality RB and you would probably get something along the lines of their #31, 63 & 95 . We may need to throw in our #125 to even out the trade. That would give us 6 picks in the top hundred instead of the three we now have. And, we’d be able to get the value in areas of need that we don’t have at this point.

  33. Iggy. I think that’s a great plan and if it can be executed, would be smart. That being said, after pick 15- this draft is so very deep, I am not sure how many trade scenarios we’ll actually see.

    But I like the mindset…

  34. There is at least one thing definitive from this video highlight reel…Texas Tech’s secondary is AWFUL. I don’t know enough about Freeman, but my gut is no. personally, i’d just rather keep trying to stockpile beasts on D.

  35. I know we should take Michael Vick with our 17th pick!!

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=ages2/090420

  36. Here’s my favorite Freeman highlight against Oklahoma on a busted play…60 yards on a frozen rope while rolling to his left…there’s just not too many people on this planet who can do that at nearly 6-6 and 250 lbs:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1VogoHOrow

He’s a project with real upside and I think he has more functional mobility than Russell. He’s more like Culpepper (pre-injury) or Randall Cunningham to me. And, his abilty to crank it long on the run, is a bit Elway-esque. If he’s around at 17, I’d rather see if he can develop over a WR, who would have the same developmental curve. If we want instant offensive bang, then Moreno or Pettigrew should be the picks. But, I think the Jets should draft offense, offense and more offense on day 1.

  37. sackdance 99

that throw was unbelieveable boy if he reach his potential we are going to be looking back at this 2009 draft ;like some of us was looking back at the cutler draft……………call me crazy but to me he has a bigger upside and ability than stafford and sanchez when all said is done.

  38. The three positions with the highest bust history are the three we’re talking about here: QB, WR and RB. About 50% of first round QBs wind up as busts. If that same percentage holds true here, one or two 1st rounders will bust. I don’t think we can afford to take a chance like that at 17. Trading down is the way to go, grabbing extra picks and players as we go. Weren’t they saying the same things about Akili Smith as they’re now saying about Josh Freeman?

  39. Hoz,

Thats my take on him also. He has as much upside as any QB I’ve seen in the last 10 years. He’s 6-6 and 250 lbs, but looks like he weighs 190. He can run, and throw on the run. If he pans out, we’ll have the franchise QB we’ve all dreamed of for the last 40 years. Next years draft will be full of guys like Stafford and Sanchez, but a guy like Freeman dosen’t come around very often. Sure he’s a risk, but I think the reward is worth taking the risk.

  40. Well McShay believes that Sanchez will now go forth. A few weeks ago we were debating if we’d take him at 17 now he’s not going to be near that.

    http://vodpod.com/watch/1543422-todd-mcshay-mock-draft-sanchez-rises

Freeman was a second rounder if that and now he’s a 1st? I can’t fathom the Jets taking him just because he’s the last option for QB in the 1st.

Kiper thinks Sanchez can possibly even go to St. Louis at #2. What a difference the mock boards would be like then!

  41. Freeman tossed his teammates under the bus and blames them for why he isn’t considered a higher pick. LOSER! QBs need confidence, but what happens if we start 1 and 3 is he going to blame the probowlers on the field with him for how raw he is. Ryan Leaf had all the tools, but none of the mentality and he flamed out before he could ever even get close to developing. I’d take Freeman in the second. He has never played even on a large college stage or beat a quality opponent and you want to put a guy this raw in New York. Disaster waiting to happen. Do you think he can shoulder the pressure of this city?

  42. JUSTAGREENGUY

here we go again you can’t give the man credit for making 1 hellof a throw, it’s QB’S in the NFL that can’t make that throw right now…………why you hate freeman so much?

  43. I keep hearing about the wealth of QBs in next year’s draft. I looked at CBS’ sports draft site and they rate just 2 first round QBs next year-McCoy &Tebow. Allowing for the fact that Bradford (a junior) may declare early, that’s pretty much similar to what we have this year. Not to mention the fact that Tebow is widely regarded as a great college player, who may not be a great fit for the pro game. CBS only rates 5 guys as possible picks in the first three rounds. I realize we’re a year away and this is but one source but it does seem kind of foolish to assume that if things don’t work out with KC/BR that the answer lies in simply waiting a year until the draft is populated with our choice of many franchise QBs. To me, it appears that there will be maybe two first round QBs and both of them could go early. In other words, waiting until next year may result in being right where we are now, in need of a QB who is out of our reach.

  44. I’m sorry one throw doesn’t say give me 20 million guaranteed. Playing at Kansas state, beating nobody in front of ten people and having one excellent year doesn’t say draft me with the 17th pick to me. Insulting your supporting cast for where you are being drafted is classless. He wasn’t recruited by a bigger school, because they questioned his ability. He has no one to blame for that, but himself. Being at a smaller program also aids him, because who knows if superior college defenses wouldn’t have made him look clueless. His physical tools make him a great prospect, but we all know how this town works.

How many bad starts do you give KC or Ratliff before the press and public would be screaming for Freeman? How long before Woody wants to make a return on his investment and satisfy his PSL angered fan base? Compare those times to when you think he will be NFL ready.

Regardless if he becomes a HOFer or a Bust he is going to make a fortune. He needs time on the bench to study and learn. This is a tough town and I question his ability to handle the hype that will surround him. Would I draft him? Yes at 17? no. It isn’t hate. It is my opinion based off what I have seen of him. I loved him as a second rounder.

  45. Freeman completed 75% of his passes against D-IAA teams. If you remove those starts and look at his numbers against D-IA teams, he completed 50.1% of his passes this season, with 12 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

He’s not Joe Flacco. He’s not Ben Roethlisberger. He’s not even Jamarcus Russell.

He has a terrific arm, but he is not an accurate passer, he doesn’t read defenses, and he doesn’t throw with any anticipation. He is a long term project. Now it helps him that he is supposedly a high character guy (but then, so was Kyle Boller), and you can see a coaching staff being more inclined to try working with him because of that. I would rather have Freeman at 17 than Jamarcus Russell at #1 overall money. But frankly, he’s got no business going anywhere near the first round based on his play last year. One would think his play should count for something.

  46. I liked what I saw from these highlights. Freeman kind of reminds me of a more athletic but less polished Ben Roethlisberger. Big guy, strong arm, makes plays.

If Sanchez isn’t available at 17, which is all but guarenteed, and the Jets don’t plan on moving up to get him, I’d trade down to the mid/late-20’s to snag Freeman. That is all dependant on whether or not the Jets have plans to draft a QB, of course.

I still believe if Sanchez isn’t available the move is to get a receiver, but I wouldn’t be upset if Freeman was taken at the appropriate spot either. I see him as a risk/reward but for what it’s worth, he wouldn’t start for at least a year and that leaves time for his potentials to blossom.

My top draft choices for the Jets:
    1 – Sanchez
    2 – Maclin
    3 – Freeman
    4 – Heyward-Bey/Britt
    5 – Moreno
    6 – Davis

  47. I’m starting to like Freeman more. He’s a big guy, cannon arm, played in a pro-style offense, and throws well on the run. I read an article about Freeman in Sporting News and ex-Kansas State head coach, Ron Prince, said “Kansas State did a poor job of surrounding Freeman with players.” Freeman was being recruited by Oklahoma. Imagine if it was Freeman instead of Braford throwing for tons of TD’s and holding up that Heisman and playing in the National Championship. I like what I have seen from Freeman and would not be mad if the Jets pick him at 17.

  48. My gut tells me that the Redskins are going to move up to Jacksonville’s pick and take Sanchez.

  49. ” Imagine if it was Freeman instead of Braford throwing for tons of TD’s and holding up that Heisman and playing in the National Championship.”

    That is a vivid imagination.

  50. B-U-S-T bust bust bust!!

  51. Definately not worth a top 20 pick and is a long term project, the only thing he has going for him is a good arm…….oh yeah, and that he’s big?

Please, this whole “cannon arm” thing gets really blown out of proportion with some of you guys, the basically sucks or is mediocre at best when it comes to the rest of the tools to be a good quarterback…j.p losman, jared lorenzen(he’s even bigger in size than freeman), jamarcus russel, kyle boller, rex grossman, oh yeah remember troy smith, lol.
My point is that arm strength is over hyped and is actually the least important of components in my opinion to be a good qb. Yes, a strong arm qb can stretch the field and keep defenses honest but there’s a lot more that goes into it.

You want a strong arm qb, go supprt ratliff if that makes you feel better. He has a strong arm as well and is more athletic and agile than freeman…..and he’s got good size on him too, lol.

Freeman is lucky this is a weak quarterback back class(basically the reason he and sanchez came out), or else he’d easily be a 3rd or 4th round pick.

  52. I posted a proposed series of trades a bit earlier which would have turned our 3 top-100 picks into six. Here’s some of the guys that are likely to be there when we pick:
    31-Robiskie, Nicks
    52-Andre Brown/Rashad Jennings/Shonn Greene
    63-Duke Robinson/Andy Levitre
    76-Fili Moala
    90-Rhett Bomar
    95-R.Quinn TE NC (Blocker)
    Then with remaining picks
    115-Mike Thomas
    193-Frantz Joseph, LB FAU
    228 Louis Sakota,K, UT

  53. seanmac, because of his size, mobility and arm strength, it’s hard for me to believe that Freeman wouldn’t potentially go in the first round unless the QB draft class was inordinately solid. I agree that Freeman is a project (and he’s a junior, too), but his K-State team was poor and it’s not unusual for good QBs on bad teams to suffer against superior opponents. As a senior, Jay Cutler, with SEC doormat Vandy, uncorked an 11 for 32 for 113 yars, 2 INT and 5 sack stink bomb against LSU and he also had a pretty poor game and loss against Middle Tenn. St., a clearly inferior opponent. While I’m rosier on Freeman than you are, the fact that K-State was bad makes getting a true read on Freeman difficult. Freeman more or less dominated inferior opponents and poor defenses (he completed 80.8% of his passes against Texas Tech) and struggled against teams that were superior. IMO, he’s a prospect like Flacco, but with more upside because he can really throw on the run well and with depth. He has a pretty thin frame for such a big guy, too. With NFL training, he just has a real high ceiling. Sure, he may not possess the ability to be an accurate NFL QB, but I don’t think that conclusion can be drawn from his time at K-State.

  54. Maybe. His completion percentage is better than the past few K-State quarterbacks have managed, which speaks well of him, as does the fact that with better supporting players he ended up with solid completion numbers against teams like Kansas, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Fresno State during his sophomore year. So that’s something. On the other hand, as long as we’re comparing him to Cutler, he doesn’t have anything approaching Cutler’s 28 of 42 for 361 with 4 TDs against Florida, or his 27 of 39 for 315 and 3 TDs against Tennessee. Freeman was non-competitive against just about every good defense he faced, and I’m not sure K-State has a bigger talent deficit going against the Big 12 than Vandy does going against the SEC.

But I agree that Freeman is more difficult to project because of his surrounding cast.

  55. What good is arm strength if his motions are read clearly as he stares down a receiver, and makes a wrong read and rifles the ball right into the safety’s hands?

  56. [...] New York Jets: QB Josh Freeman. The Jets are apparently in love with Freeman’s athleticism and he is set to become this year’s Joe Flacco—the guy who rises out of nowhere to be a [...]
