The Jets announced their plans for training camp this July, and have decided to go on tour with their practice sessions.
The New York Jets announced today that they will open to the public five June minicamp practices as part of a week of activities at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, N.J., beginning June 6.
The Jets also announced that their 2009 training camp will feature practices open to the public in three different locations throughout the tristate area — upstate New York, Long Island and New Jersey.
New York Gov. David A. Paterson announced today that the Jets will hold their training camp on the campus of SUNY Cortland…
…Training camp at SUNY Cortland is scheduled to begin Friday, July 31.
The Jets will then hold a special Family Night practice on Long Island at Hofstra University, the site of their former practice facility, on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Three more practices open to the public will take place at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center on Aug. 22, 26 and 27.
Thoughts after the jump…
Oh, I see what they did there. While I definitely understand the Jets’ desire to expand their reach across the region and make themselves more accessible to fans outside of the NYC market, this sounds like a lot more trouble than it really needs to be.
I don’t want to be the Debbie Downer in this situation, but wouldn’t moving training camp around be more of a distraction?
This feels like Rocky III. The Jets are Rocky Balboa, opening their training up to all the fans, taking pictures, having fun, and telling Mickey to cool it. And the rest of the NFL is Clubber Lang, doing pull-ups in a dank basement.
Thanks to ganggreen2003 @ NYJetsFan.com for the heads up.

I agree. Its better to practice in one location where a proper routine can be established. Also, the best way to earn fans (ans sell PSLs which is always a motivating factor) is to win games. When you play hard and win, people will naturally gravitate to you.

just met Woody Johnson in a building here in SUNY Cortland…incredibly nice guy, happy to take pictures and shake everyone’s hand
-
and yes…the surrounding area is a dank basement

Wso cares …..its training camp……If the team wins games and has a sick defense….does it really matter?? Whats the difference if they practice every day at Floram park….Really??
-
I pity the fools who have to go up against the Jets defense this year!
-
Never been to training camp before. Can someone tell me what it is and if it cost anything?
-
Cortland is an awful place to have training camp – their football facilities are good but there is nothing to do in Cortland especially in summertime, not even any decent places to eat from what I can remember. That being said I might have to make the trip since its easier to get to than NJ. I have a feeling Bart Scott is going to make practices much more interesting with all of his jawing and barking.

Thanks Angel for letting me know, thats awesome!
How do I buy tickets for pratice and when do they go on sale?
Also do I have to pay for the autographs? cause I would love to get Leon and Revis to sign a football.

WHAT ABOUT THE GREEN & WHITE GAME?
-
Joker, It costs nothing to attend. Their are all kinds of Offensive and Defensive drills. At times, the O plays against the D. They have punting and kicking drills and kick-off drills, as well. I loved attending Hofstra, when I had the time.
The schedule that the team has set for the Jets sounds like they will be tired of travelling, before the season even begins. They need to get it together.

Thank you Harvlis.

I’ll see you all in Florham Park, no way I’m going to Cortland.
What happened to “All 3 fields are in the same direction as the actual field in the Meadowlands? And what about all the technology, learning tools, excellent gym, field house…???
Sour grapes from me as FP is 23 miles from LV, rats.

I think this is actually a pretty good idea.
The obvious is that it keeps the fans happy, and I know a lot of people who were regular attenders at the Hofstra camp.
I think it will also help the team get some short travel under their belts, get them in the right state of mind for the season and come out the gate strong, something we’ve struggled with

does anyone know if woody is still at cortland? i highly doubt it but was just wondering
-
no he left about an hour ago

Other than the August 12 date at Hofstra, the Jets won’t really be “moving around”. Training camp usually breaks by the last week or so in August (i.e., the players no longer stay in dorms, even though they obviously continue practicing); so by August 22, they would be back in Florham Park anyway. The difference is that the practices were no longer open to the public in the past after camp broke.

Training camp is awesome and it’s great for kids. Unfortunately, then you start liking guys who get cut…I still can’t believe Mangini cut special teams demon Ray Ventrone!!! He always stayed the longest signing autographs and was great with kids, as are Rhodes and Revis. Coles was a little surly and Chad was a prince. Here’s a bet that Bart Scott will be awesome.

Having discussed over dinner last night with my 9 & 12 year old kids, and telling them nicely NFW on going to Cortland, I’m sooooooo PSYCHED at chance to take them the 30 minutes to Florham Park –
The happiness that I’ll see on their faces when I tell them tonight almost makes living in NJ worthwhile…(prior to past two had lived last 20 in DC area – still asking myself WHY)
p.s. past two season I’ve taken them to 11 games…is allowing them to be Jets fans child abuse?
-
i dont think the moving around has anything to do with a “tour” or expanding the fan base. i dont think NFL training camp is for the casual fan – the giants could practice in my back yard and i wouldnt think twice about watching
the move to upstate NY is clearly an attempt to get away from everything and bond the team together. having a practice or 2 is to throw some respect to hofstra and the LI fans. otherwise, they’ll be in FP.
we could all probably agree that if it translates to W’s, who cares where they practice?

Having gone to SUNY Cortland for 4 years, i can assure everyone that the facilities are great. Plus there is a lot of room for fans to hang out. I think its a good idea that they get away for awhile and go somewhere where there are no distractions.
To anyone who says that there is nothing to do during the summer in Cortland…YOU ARE RIGHT, BUT THATS THE POINT!! NO DISTRACTIONS

I have worked for the Jets for the past two years and I have not had a more enjoyable time in my life. I’m only in high school, but you can’t measure how upset I am to see them move to Cortland.
I had high hopes for Stony Brook. I could easily commute there within a half hour. Now, there’s no way I can work for the Jets anymore; my dream job has been yanked from me.
It was a great time meeting and conversing with all the players on a daily basis, becoming friendly with them. Now I’ll miss that.
Thanks for this. Thanks for disconnecting from the majority of your fan base.

I have been a jet fan since 1969 long wait heh ! I have tosay im very dissapointed with the jets moving to new jersey and not just the training camp! I hate to say this but they really should change there name to the new jersey jets as should the giants they are no longer new york teams. If they win that super bowl cup this year (holding my breath) it will be displayed in new jersey not new york wake up people they are not a new york team anylonger—I will never go to the meadowlands to see them a game but i will continue to watch them on tv but lets face it folks juding by there actions i dont think they really care !!!!!

SUNY Cortland might as well be a dank basement…
