Buzz: Jets “Heavily Involved” In Boldin Talks

by Corey Griffin on April 21st, 2009 at 5:23 pm

From ESPN’s professor, John Clayton, comes word that the Baltimore Ravens are not the only ones in deep talks for All-Star wideout Anquan Boldin.

The Cardinals want a first and third-round draft pick in exchange for Boldin. The Ravens are willing to give up a No. 1 pick but they won’t give up a second draft choice in the deal.

The Jets are also heavily involved in the Boldin talks.

Well, folks, this comes on the heels of PFT reporting that the Ravens have dropped out of the talks for Boldin. To me, a first and a third seems high for Boldin and not something I’d be happy with or willing with to give up for a soon-to-be 29-year-old WR that plays a physical style and also has a rumored chronic hip injury.

    corey

we just had a big discussion about that but i think thomas jones a 2nd rd pick and something next yr should get it done.

  2. avatar JesusRevis says:

Dont really know how I feel about this. Boldin is one hell of a player and he represents everything I love about football players; toughness and desire. However, that is a steep price tag for a guy his age who plays with his style. If the Jets could somehow lower the asking price I will be all for this, and I have absolutely no problem giving up the first rounder for him. I do wonder though, if Eric Mangini would be willing to trade Braylon Edwards to the Jets, for practically the same price, why wouldn’t the Jets explore that option. Maybe the penguin is refusing to negotiate with his former bff Mike Tannebaum.

  3. avatar Harvlis says:

Besides the rumored hip injury, he has had hamstring problems. It is not something that goes away. As great as Boldin has been, I would be careful before giving up the house for him. We don’t even know if we have a QB that can get it to him yet.

  4. avatar JesusRevis says:

For those of you who are so quick to include Thomas Jones in a trade, I’m curious as to how you suggest we replace him. I am one of the biggest Leon Washington fans in the world, but lets be serious, we need more than just Leon. TJ is perfect for our game plan and would be very hard to replace.

  5. avatar ridinmywave says:

Random question guys, I’m actually in a last desperation to get some tickets to the NFL Draft, any info that can help??

  6. avatar Mike D. says:

    O noez

  7. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

you replace thomas jones in the draft that’s the most easy position to replace in the NFL

  8. avatar JesusRevis says:

    HOZ,

I hear ya, but it is still a risky move by the Jets

  9. avatar Dylan says:

We would almost definitely draft Moreno if we could trade Jones and keep out 1st round pick. Otherwise we could draft Rashad Jennings, Donald Brown, or sign a vet like Deuce McAllister.

  10. avatar Dylan says:

    our Warrick Dunn

  11. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    JESUSREVIS

I AGREE WITH YOU ONLY WAY I WILL MAKE THAT DEAL IS IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT NOW WITH THAT BEING SAID ARIZONA NEEDS A RB TO SPLIT CARRIES WITH HIGHTOWER THOMAS JONES TRADE VALUE IS AT IT’S HIGHEST RIGHT NOW AND BESIDES GETTING HIS SALARY OFF THE CAP COULD FREE UP MONEY TO GIVE BOLDIN A NEW DEAL. AND WE STILL HAVE MONEY UNDER THE CAP LEFT TO PLAY WITH

  12. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

can you imagine a division with
    TO
    MOSS
    WELKER
    BOLDIN
GINN JR………every division game will be a battle of the wr’s that will lead to a season with high expectations and good football.

  13. avatar JesusRevis says:

HOZ, I agree with you about TJ’s trade value, but I love the guy and I just dont want to see him go.

I find it funny you mentioned Ginn Jr. but not Cotchery?

    Whats up with that?

  14. avatar tyler says:

why dont we just switch first rounders with the cards and give them our 2nd rd pick for boldin? that way we still have a first rounder, still get a wr, cards move way up and get boldin out of their hair

  16. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    jesusrevis my bad on cotch
    tyler that’s a great idea

my point is that by getting boldin defensives can put 8 in the box or they are going to killed boldin can take it to the house on 5 yd pass plays team him up with leon and keller we are going to have a exciting offense for 1 of these young QB’S

  17. avatar Jimbo says:

I really like Boldin but I’d rather let the price come down. It seems likely they’re gonna unload him, so I’d rather just wait and hope we could give up less (since he’s getting older, has had injury issues, and doesn’t want to be in Zona). Hopefully he doesn’t mind that we broke his face…

  18. avatar tyler says:

thanks hoz. totally agree with you. i never understand how people say boldin isnt a deep threat? that man can catch anything and most importanly do somthing fancy after the catch!

the way i was looking at it was if we are planning on going wr in the draft with one of our first 2 picks then why would it hurt to just trade one away for a proven reciever who is tough as they come?

only downside to me is if we gave up more then just 1 actual pick. i hate seeing that the patsys have 11 !

  19. avatar Lucas says:

I don’t think this gets done for a first and TJ. I really don’t. I am not rushing to give up the first and third for him, but I would rather see this happen then draft Heyward Bey. My call is stay tuned and see how the draft plays out. Your telling me if Maclin is there at 17 and the Jets traded the pick too early to find out, you will be satisified? Keep the phones open and watch the board shake out and then call AZ. Personally, I believe Boldin stays in AZ (2 Years on contract)

  20. avatar tom says:

trade tjones for him immediately and a second rounder. speaking of old age, thomas jones is 30, that is extremely old for a running back and he only ran well bc of the oline and favre being a threat at qb tjones disapeared when defenses realized favre couldnt throw anymore. anquan boldin will finally be a threat for our qb whoever that may be and knowshon is an absolute beast i cant beleive how low his stock is he dominated the most competitve conference in college football.. get boldin..he may not be a burner but he is all heart and is a beast

  21. avatar Marc says:

Something tells me the Cardinals are asking for a 1st and a 3rd, but will end up taking the best 1st round pick offered. You always ask for more than you need.

If the injury concerns were not a factor, I would take him in a heartbeat. I know he is not the outside deep threat the team needs specifically, but at the end of the day he’s still an outstanding option in the passing game; better than anything the team currently has.

I really don’t know the extent of his injury concerns, and even if I did, I’m not a doctor. The fact that he only has 4, MAYBE 5, good years left, without the injury concerns has to impact the decision, but how much?

There would certainly be risk involved with such a move, but I would argue that there is a greater risk selecting an unproven commodity in the draft. Boldin was also able to put up terrific numbers when the cardinals were horrendous, succeeding with Josh Mccown at quarterback. I would like to hope that one of our quarterbacks can at least be better than Mccown was.

  22. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    marc
i would trade the 17 pick for boldin straight up in a heartbeat then take a chance on DHB in the 1st rd

  23. avatar Frank says:

I’d trade TJ + a 1st or 2nd for Boldin – Jones is a fine running back but we can easily get Shonn Greene or Leshon McCoy to replicate what he does, which is gain 4 yards/carry behind this line. Financially you don’t have to pay Jones or the 1st or 2nd round pick, so Boldin’s price is not that terrible. And I think Boldin is awesome — not that fast but he is STRONG, great in the red zone, and I think is a really good blocker for our running game. Peter King’s article today basically makes the point that only 1 in 10 high round WR draft picks actually make an impact in the first year or two — we need to keep that in mind even with “sure things” like Maclin or Crabtree. There’s no telling if they are the next Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Troy WIlliamson, etc.

  24. avatar pound4pound says:

Nope. Boldin is still a very good receiver but definitely isn’t the guy he was early in his career. His ypc has dropped each of the past 2 yrs, and he’s missed 9 games in those two seasons. The proposed price tag is just way too high.

  25. avatar Ken O Brien says:

Im for Boldin…Ive said this before, Boldin would make cotchery that much more of a better receiver. He’s not selfish and I think would make for good chemistry in the receiving core. At the same time, I would not give the away the mortgage for him…I can see us giving the first round and possibly a conditional pick next year.

  26. avatar TOON2388 says:

I would trade this year’s #1 and that is it. No TJ, no #3, no 2010 pick

  27. OCHO CINCO. a 1st rounder for the ’09 draft is too expensive to pay for a player who has not proven that he can play without Larry Fitzgerald.

  28. avatar Dylan says:

His 1st season he had 1377 receiving yards without Fitz. If that isn’t proving he can be a #1 then I don’t know what is. And he was on pace for 1300 yards last year, so idk how much his production could possibly have dropped off.

  29. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    website
how the man never prove he can play without larry if that’s the only team he played on?

  30. avatar Robert06907 says:

website design… look at Boldin’s rookie numbers.. he HAS proven he can play without fitzgerald. 101 receptions and nearly 1400 yeards..

  31. avatar Dylan says:

OCHOCINCO WILL NOT BE TRADED. The Bengals issued a statement saying so today. He can whine all he wants but he will be a Bengal this year.

  32. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    DYLAN

i can’t agree with you more if we didn’t break his face he wouldn’t have missed those games last yr and his #’s would of been ridiculous.

  33. avatar Dylan says:

He had 1377 yards without Fitz! He DEFINITELY proved it.

  34. avatar SackDance99 says:

I like Boldin a lot, but the price sounds way too high. He’s going to be 29 in October, he’s only had 2 16-game seasons, and only 1 since his rookie year. He’s taken a lot of punishment in his 6 seasons and he’d want a lot of money. But, he’s been very productive no matter who is QB or WR-partner was. Also, the Cards had TJ and might have a “been there, done that” attitude about him. My guess is that they would want someone else or just picks.

  35. avatar jetfanATL says:

I am not all that concerned about a 29 year old WR. Look how long Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, TO, Isaac Bruce and many other WR’s have played and been effective.

If Rex is as high on Clowney as he seems to be we are in good shape with the vertical threat where you take 2-3 shots a game to keep the secondary honest. Boldin is a beast after the catch and will make life easier on both Cotchery and Keller.

  36. avatar Dylan says:

The Jets should wait until the draft or right before the draft to get him. Then the price will go way down because Arizona will feel like they have to trade him BEFORE the draft is over so they can get picks this year. Maybe we could get him straight up for the #17 pick. The advantage we have over all the other teams interested in Boldin (the Giants, Ravens, and Eagles) is we have the highest 1st round pick. Another advantage we have over the Giants and Eagles is that we are in the AFC.

  37. avatar Dylan says:

We should NOT do what the Bears did with Cutler and give up the house right away.

  38. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

MR T is to smart to give up the house on a player that’s not a QB

  39. avatar Dylan says:

    Good point Hoz.

  40. avatar EddieC says:

I really think this would set us back in a few years. Look at how young the Bills team is…

a lot of players we have aquired through free agency (a lot are aging), or through trades (jenkins) and now maybe boldin

The teams in our division have a crazy amount of picks (bills= 9, pats= 11). We need youth, and players that will be around for years and years to come.

Is it better to give up a 1 & 3 on an already developed star receiver or develop a possible star receiver and a possible starter in the 3rd?

  41. avatar MS says:

Do you think the Cards would be willing to take a 1 and a 4 for Boldin. I would trade that in a second and get Donald Brown in the 2nd round to replace TJ if we cut him next year. If it came down to it I would even give up our 1st and 3rd if we had to.

  42. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Dont love Boldin but we do need a WR.

The guy is a beast but he’s 29 and has taken a lot of punishment so far….

    i would rather have Edwards

  43. avatar J-E-T-S says:

eddie you said it yourself our team is aging meaning we dont have time to develop a project.

  44. avatar J-E-T-S says:

WE ARENT GETTING EDWARDS HE PLAYS FOR MANGINI

  45. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

they would never trade edwards to us.

  46. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    ^^^^ jetchick that’s you?

  47. avatar Brendan says:

I’ll pass. He got his face dismantled right in front of me, which isn’t the reason I don’t want him, but every time he crossed the middle I’d be having ‘Nam-level flashbacks.

  48. avatar Fred says:

If Boldin didnt suffer that horrific unfury he woudlve had a better regular season thatn Fitzgerald. That says enough.

  49. avatar jsa says:

I’d really like to get Boldin, the team desperately needs a starting caliber WR, and Boldin’s a legit #1. He’s proven that, any WR the Jets may draft hasn’t, could be a star or a bust.

That said, I’d be hesitant to give up a 1st and 3rd, would either want a later pick in return or give up something later than 3rd.

  50. avatar Brendan says:

Jetsblog is really doing a number on this jetschick.

  51. avatar levi says:

great player. but what kind of contract is he gonna be looking for?afterall isnt that why he wants out of az.

  52. avatar jet4lif says:

We are build to win now so drafting a WR wont do us any good. I’d rather swap first rounders with cards and give a second rounder.

  53. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

Based on the draft Value chart, the Ravens 1st and 3rd round picks are worth 840 points (700+140). The Jets 1st rounder is worth 950 according to the chart. If anything, we should ask for boldin and their 3rd rounder (120 points) for our first.

  54. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

11 for 149 and 4 TDs. That’s what Boldin just did for the Jets against the Patriots on Madden 09. 35-18 J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! I want to see Boldin in green and white!

  55. avatar Mike S. says:

Fake interest in Boldin and go get Braylon Edwards.
Edwards style is a better complement to Cotchery and he is a few years younger.

  56. avatar Ed L says:

    REALLY IMPORTANT!!!

i know off topic but I just saw that the draft wristbands are being given out on Friday night/Sat morning 12AM instead of the usual saturday at 10am

wats the deal and what time should we start lining up….

    someone please help lol?!

  57. avatar GlockNSoul says:

Crabtree will be special, possibly even better than Bolden. I’d rather try for Crab man first, but if that isn’t possible, I’d be OK with Boldin if we’re comfortable that he’ll be healthy. Clowney could be the deep threat, and not have to be the #2 receiver.

  58. avatar jetsfaninmiami says:

i like boldin but no pulling a chicago and giving up everything…..i need an exciting, jets filled draft day !

  59. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

Get out there at like 9 pm Fri night, get a wrist band at midnight and go back Sat morning for the draft. I did it last year it was awful and now the draft doesn’t start till 4pm. No thanks.

  60. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

I bet Rex likes his toughness. He only missed three weeks last season after fracturing a facial bone, suffering nerve damage, and undergoing surgery on his sinus membrane! I just wonder whether or not the Jets can convince him to come to New York, since it was their defense that busted up his face.

  61. avatar GlockNSoul says:

I’d settle for Crabtree, Maclin, Boldin or Edwards. Only issue is that we only have 6 picks, and deal for any of them would likely cost us a couple of those picks, and we desperately need depth on OL and front 7. With limited number of picks, I always wonder – why don’t we ever sign the better undrafted FA’s? Can’t remember the last name undrafted FA that we signed. Defensive player of year (Harison) was undrafted FA. We need some of that magic.

  62. avatar BigBear says:

All this trade talk of TJ is silly. He came from Arizona many moons ago. They are not going to trade for him.

As for Boldin, would be a leader and another threat on O. Not perfect fit (speedier would be best as some have noted), but is a great player/weapon on a team in search of one. The cost in picks plus salary cap room I think is probably too much. I have no problem saying that I would trade Boldin for a 1 and 3 AT THE SALARIES THAT WE WOULD BE PAYING THOSE PICKS. What I do have an issue with is giving up those picks and paying $8MM+ a year for multiple years. This assumes we have to redo his contract; not sure I want him w/o him being happy , thus the extension.

  63. avatar Fred says:

GlockNSoul Mike Devito is a valuable bakc up at DE for us who was undrafted. Kenwin Cummings, who looks like will be a backup MLB, is udnrafted. Brandon Moore, and some others too including caulcrick and woodead. oy ea brett ratliff

  64. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

Oh if you bring in Boldin he’s getting a new deal no doubt. I say stay away. Lot to give up to get him, then you have to pay him.

  65. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

If the Jets give up their first rounder and throw in one of the Jets expendable personnel, like Brad Smith, that should be enough.

  66. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

Boldin is a warrior and could give the Jets the spark they need.

  67. avatar swizzle81 says:

    I like…. how much?

In all seriousness, trade the 17th pick for Boldin this year, and the Jets get a conditional next year from Arizona. Boldin is better than any player available at 17. As for Edwards, the thing about him that should concern many is his soft hands and large drop off in production this past year and his prima donna stature.

  68. avatar Ed L says:

thing is are people gonna be lining up at like 1 pm on saturday cuz i know last year i got there at 9pm and was about the 100th in line…. but that was when they were handing out wristbands saturday morning at 10…

idk if anyone can help it would be great?

also is anyone planning on going to the draft too?

  69. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

Boldin has two years remaining on a four-year, US$22.25 million contract. He earned US$4 million last season.

  70. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

What is nuts about those who are saying the price is OK is that the cost in terms in draft picks is not the important price.

This guy (agent rumored to be Drew R which should ring a bell or three) has two years left on his contract but wants more money. And is being so loud about it that (again this should sound familiar) the Cards are considering letting him go.

The issue is not draft picks, the issue is how much he will sign for.

Coles got two years at more than $8 mil per (or thereabouts).

Boldin will want much more not having the age or concussion issues.

We cannot afford to tie up so much cap for a WR who brings nothing new to the team than what Coles and Cotch have been supplying.

Dumb move. Wrong amount of money. Wrong use of draft picks. Wrong player and agent.

I hope it is just talk.

    harlan

  71. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

I like Boldin he’s a beast. But what does a wr at 17 make as oppossed to what Boldin will command? Also what pick do we get back? What do you make of this TJ situation?

  72. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

If the Jets give up a 1st, a 3rd, and pay Boldin 8 or so million a year, the deal would be pretty costly. When I think of it that way…well I don’t know if it’s such a good idea.

  73. avatar Chris says:

If the price is right- we need to bring this player in as he represents a position of need. If the cost is only one pick (plus a plyer) it needs to be done because one of those slots are designed for a WR.

I’m not promoting the 1st Rd pick go but a 2nd Rd/ TJ type combination is really a no-brainer. I like TJ as much as the next guy but the honesty is, he’s being a baby right now. I get it from a business point of view and if you folks knew what I did for a living- trust me, I know the value of these short careers. But on the same hand- he signed a contract and he should now be expendable based on his emotions. The fact that we can also backload a young Rb in Rd 1 helps the decision to move him.

If the Jets added Moreno and Boldin in exchange for Jones- they will undoubtedly become more explosive on offense and an immediate notice would go to opposing defenses that there still is an aerial threat. Keeping the later round choices is also necessary to build depth at both lines.

  74. avatar Chris says:

I’m confident Tanny could work this deal to be beneficial for the Jets in the next 2-3 yrs…after that, he becomes a cap casualty…that’s the business and if Mr. T knows anything, it’s how to work a cap. You think it’s a coincidence the players gripe on deals 2-3 yrs after signing them?????

That being said, TJ is out of line because he collected more up front that he proved worthy and is trying to bang them out now off that one year…not to mention he’s 31 at that position.

On the surface his situation may look similar to Boldin’s but I think they’re different based on future worth…

  75. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

Boldin is 28 and won’t stretch the field, but Clowney could be used for a deep threat. I just don’t know about this deal. I’m torn.

  76. avatar Chris says:

The weakest part of our O-Line is the pass protection, as Faneca and Woody are primarily run blockers.

And we have no idea what Ratliff, or Clemens can prove in terms of a vertical game. We also know Schotty is a west coast disciple and Rex is conservative by coaching history and blood lines.

So, why is everyone smitten on the potential deep threat??? That may be zero part of our offensive gameplan.

I’d much prefer Boldin, who can cross the middle with Cotch and run sharp routes on the edges and provide our Qb’s with security than a blazer who can run 40 yds where either our QB cant make the throw, or the percentage of completion is relatively low. Our offense will not be built on that and to a certain extent, many of the championship teams of the last 10 yrs haven’t had that threat at all.

  77. avatar Brendan says:

Harlan makes the point for all of us. So thank you, Harlan, for putting it in terms people should be able to understand.

  78. avatar David from New York says:

I personally agree with Corey. I think a second round and thomas jones and a undisclosed pick for next years draft should be fine. Then they could possibly trade up through 8-12 and try and get Beanie. He is a good replacement and has a similar style to thomas and would come at a cheaper price than thomas is right now. It this were to happen i would be quite happy

  79. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

I’m not saying it’s the best move, but I wonder if the Cards would package Boldin with Matt Leinart.

  80. avatar Brendan says:

Beanie wells is so overrated. I pray to god the Jets aren’t foolish enough to draft a big back who is by all accounts not a tough person. And trading up to get him would be historically stupid, and add another 30 seconds to the Jets draft blunders youtube clip.

  81. avatar jvsvn says:

The Jets are “heavily involved.” According to who? Drew Rosenhaus? Last week we had “significant interest” in Zack Thomas. Until the Jets announce that the deal is done, I won’t believe that we are “heavily involved” in anything. I’m sure Tanny has put out feelers. I certainly hope he has – that’s his job. Who knows. On the eve of the draft strange things happen. Arizona may feel they have to move him for whatever they can get. That’s when the REAL price will emerge. In the meantime, this just sounds like your typical planted story by an agent trying to show that his client is a hot commodity.

  82. avatar Harvlis says:

I’m with you, Harlan. Too much for an aging player who is not happy about his monetary situation. Let’s go youth and keep TJ and our picks.

  83. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

I don’t know that this TJ contract dispute isn’t going away. Yes these workouts are voluntary but do we really think he’s coming to camp without a deal? So do you renegotiate or trade while he has value and go with Moreno at 17?

  84. avatar J-E-T-S says:

    The smart jets would

Trade 2nd and TJ for Boldin.
Then draft Knowshon Moreno and Anthony Hill in the 3rd.

  85. avatar rich says:

thomas jones, brad smith, 3rd rd pick and late pick next year , draft moreno

  86. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

That would be nice, but does az want jones back? I hope it happens, should be an interesting next few days.

  87. avatar J-E-T-S says:

wow rich This aint the NBA whats up with all those players.

  88. avatar Brandon from Illinois says:

I doubt this deal will amount to anything. Can’t wait until Saturday!

  89. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

Don’t worry the jets is not going to trade for him if the deal is not reasonable that’s not in their nature

  90. avatar Mike S. says:

Jones is a hard working, blue collar type RB — he can do it all – run, block, and catch, but even at his peak he was never an elite RB talent and he is getting old fast.
Outside of the top RBs, RBs are plug-n-play in today’s NFL.
Take a 1st round RB (Wells or Moreno) for leverage on the negotiation with TJ.
If that doesn’t work, trade his ass.

  91. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

Boldin is a good player and he would definitely help the development of either Clemens or Ratliff. However I do not want the Jets to give up two draft picks for him. He is aging, and he does have a history of injuries, not to mention that the Jets need those draft picks to fill current and future holes.

I wouldn’t mind packaging the 17th with a secondary player (like a Smith) but in “NO” way do I want the Jets to give away Thomas Jones! If the Jets trade away draft picks they will not get the players they need. Then there is the risk of not getting a player equal or better then Thomas Jones.

Yes Leon is great, but if he gets hurt we got nothing in the backfield, and then what?

It would not be wise to weaken one position just to strengthen another.

  92. avatar Testaverde says:

I really dont understand where all this money is going to come from? I think Id rather have Washington locked in than have Boldin.

  93. avatar J-E-T-S says:

You guys don’t read Ttrading TJ and the 2nd pick gives us cap space for Boldin and keeping our 17th pick means we draft Knowshon.

  94. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

I believe we are still 12-14 mil under the cap and trading jones we will be even further 1 thing the jets are good at and that’s cap management

  95. avatar JetsFan4Life says:

PFT is pretty clear in reporting from Arizona that nobody is willing to pay the asking price

“Graves is now claiming that no offers have been received.

“Quite a few teams have called but we have no offers,” Graves said Tuesday, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.”

Offer our 3rd rounder with Brad Smith!

    Mike S.,

TJ is getting old fast? Last year he had the most yards in his career, while only carrying the ball the 4th most times in a single season. He also had his highest yards per carry average as a full-time starter.

Last year he decided to continue lifting weights rather than stop mid-season, and he said it made him continue to feel fresh throughout the season. I don’t read much into the last few games of the year; Dolphins game the entire team quit, Seattle was in the snow and the team played terribly, and Buffalo he was a one pony show with the team ignoring Leon sans 1 carry (47 yard td, thanks Mangini). The Buffalo game wasn’t even that terrible, although San Fran left something to be desired.

I think Jones has at least this year left in him, but I see two solid years as a feature back left.

If thomas jones dosent want to be here trade his ass and draft a rb in the 1st rd either way this will be his last season as a jet

  101. avatar mike s. says:

Brendan…. I agree. Jones probably has 2 years left.
What I was trying to say, was that Jones is not an elite back and his age is a major negative at the RB position. He was never very fast and RBs usually lose a step around his age.
The right side of the o-line did a great job in run-blocking last year and Jones put up very good numbers, but all the big runs were made by Leon, not Jones. Jones is a pounder, but he lacks break-away speed and elusiveness. In addition, rookie RBs can often be plugged-in quickly, which makes paying up for an aging RB a questionable use of capital.
If his demands are too high, the team needs to consider showing him the door.
I’d take Wells or Moreno at 17 if they are available.

not worth trading for a 29 yr old WR with the team at the stage that its at right now. we have to build for the future what will boldin give us? 1-3 years of productivity for a bad team?

  103. avatar JetsRutgersMets says:

I don’t want him. He’s getting to that age where they start all of a sudden start falling off ( See Tory Holt).

Lets get Miles Austin, Mark Clayton, Darrell Jackson, or Ashley Lelie?

Any keepers here? Obviously there was talks about Miles Austin, but if we can get Darrell Jackson back to his “hey-day” for a couple of seasons. Plus I bet we could get him for cheap!

What about Mark Clayton? The guy loves the long ball!

  104. avatar Jetsetter says:

Jones for Boldin Straight up! It would be a win win situation for each team, filling needs on their offense. Jones led the AFC in rushing, he should have more value than Boldin, why are we talking a package deal. Arizona should return a pick to the Jets.

    Just say no!

  107. Should the N.Y. Jets go after Vick when he gets re-instated by Goodell? I as a Jets fan feel strongly that they should because he would be an added weapon to their offense with his running ability.

  108. avatar James in TN says:

I bet Boldin’s salary would be equal to the amount we pay the 17th pick who is unproven. Remember the NFL rewards rookies and screws Vets.

“trading TJ and the 2nd pick gives us cap space for Boldin”

Not if he demands a new deal (which he will) it doesn’t. Not even close.

    Hoz

“I believe we are still 12-14 mil under the cap and trading jones we will be even further”

Actually, they are about 11m under the cap, but need approximately $5m to sign their rookies and $5m to cover potential NLTBE incentives which may arise during the season.

Trading Jones actually gives rise to a cap hit that exceeds the saving made by not having to pay his salary, so it would use up $500K of cap space, not create any room.

The only way I see that they can afford Boldin is if they trade their first rounder (or Shaun Ellis) and give him a long term deal with a huge option bonus next year, so his cap number does not exceed the 2009 cap number of the outgoing player/picks.

(This means that other proposed deals here such as Smith + 3rd, Henry + 2nd, Jones straight up are impossible without going over the cap).

If a first rounder is deemed to be too much, but trading the pick is the only way they can free up sufficient cap room, then maybe they could get back a 2010 pick in return. On the whole though, the suggestion that this was floated by his agent to make it seem like there’s a demand for his client sounds most plausible.

I heard rumors that the jets are thinking about bringing in rex grosman for a look at 1st I was like what the hell are they doing but the kid did play in a superbowl and a change of scenary can help look at what happen to warner, garcia, pennington and so on…………the kid has a good arm expirence and our off line and running game is a lot better than chicagos low risk high reward and we can get him for peanuts

  111. avatar Tish says:

With Crabtree unavailable at the position of primary need, the options are clear: Boldin or Edwards for the 17 and a package (not that steep given that Boldin is too expensive for Az and Mananus doesn’t want Edwards) or trading down for a desirable extra pick and selecting Nicks (the safe WR) later in round 1. HB, Maclin, Britt and Harvin are not locks to be productive #1s. The strength of this draft is rounds 2 and 3, and maximizing that fact can give the Jets enough help to be competitive; albeit that it will still come down to KC or Ratty being productive and efficient. And please Mr. “I screwed up with Kendall and Baker and Coles”, work it out with TJ, even getting a quality future RB in round 2 or 3 will not compensate for losing him.

  112. I argued for the guy on the last post, but I am hearing more and more that he wants like 8 to 10 million per year. If that is the case good riddens, someone else may pay him that, but we would be silly to.
