I’ve watched Wells a ton because I’m an East Coast Buckeyes fan.

He’s awesome, period. A man amongst men in a league that basically only cares about playing defense it seems.

Keep in mind that due to TERRIBLE Quarterbacking before Pryor took over, teams played 8-men in the box in a league that is already a “3 yards and a cloud of dust league” (Big-10).

Pryor is one of the best, if not THE best athlete in college football, but he’s far, far, far, far more of a runner than a passer at this point in his career.

And Wells got hurt this year because Tressel wanted a Heisman under his belt. I don’t even want to look back because its irrelevant, but I believe he was hurt against a D-IAA or some turd team after the Buckeyes were winning by 21 late in the game against a far inferior opponent. I think the game was closer than they thought it would be but comfortably out of hand when he got hurt.

I’m back-and-forth about he and Moreno. Moreno is a super-athlete for sure and tough, but Wells would be awesome to pair with Leon. Plus, this year TJ, Leon, and Wells would be a pretty sweet trio. Jacobs-Ward-Bradshaw except better.

i agree with RKNYC, wells is a much better back than jacobs. Jacob is just behind one of the best o-lines in the league.

i love his ability to hit the hole quick and finish off runs and its amazing how a man his size can beat a defender around the edge time and time again. If he can toughen up id love for him to be a jet.

I understand the things that pound4pound is saying. I haven’t followed Wells but, you can’t put together a highlight film like this one, without Wells doing lots of damage. Here is what I took from the highlight film:

He is fast and all of his runs were all-out efforts.

He had a nice O-line and had tons of holes but, he recognized the openings in a heartbeat and followed his blockers beautifly.

He showed the desire to punish the d-backs — which I love from a RB.

He ran inside and outside and broke tackles quite often.

He knows how to run for the first down. I particularly liked his spin move clip.

Players get hurt. I don’t think one player is better than another if he plays through an injury. I would rather a player speak up and get healthy, rather than punish themselves (see Brett Favre, this past season). Wells would be a nice addition to our team. I would have no problem taking him with seventeen.

What football player doesn’t miss some games? This is football. He comes back and plays. He is a better runner than Jacobs and has moves and power.

I have been pulling for him, even though I don’t necessarily want another Buckeye.

If T Jackson is there or Maclin or Sanchez maybe we don’t take Wells but I’d take him over Moreno personally he is a better blocker in the backfield and I don’t want another blocker like Leon in the backfield in Moreno.

P4P, I agree with everything, obviously a tough choice here, and I’m sure if AP struggled his first year everyone would be saying Wells will too but they are different runners. Wells is not an every down back and I think AP is. Lendale White, turned out to be decent back when he didn’t have to carry the ball every down. If you draft wells I think you draft him knowing he is not an every down back. If you can put him with someone I think he would be a great back. Just as Brandon Jacobs is not an every down back, and if he was I’m sure he would take plays off as well.

CFRED70, I’m glad you brought up Peterson, b/c you’re right, he did also miss 3 full games in college, just like Wells. But when he was in the game, AP was always a monster and gave 100% effort. I don’t think the same applies to Wells, based on what NFL Draft Scout and Scouts Inc are saying. Here’s the draft evaluation notes on both AP (from 2007) and Beanie:

Peterson:
Shows a great deal of competitiveness and toughness as a runner…he’s a complete prospect with special physical skills and competitiveness. When healthy, Peterson displays an outstanding combination of size, vision, instincts, burst and power as a runner.

Wells:
Outstanding initial burst… There are times when he runs like a man possessed. But those times are few and far between. His overall effort is inconsistent. He takes himself out of games. If he has a big run he frequently takes the next two plays off. Not always a self motivator. Has taken himself out of multiple games because of questionable injuries. Scouts are concerned that he was coddled too much at Ohio State and will be shocked by the adjustment in the NFL… No off-the-field issues but scouts question his toughness, maturity level and leadership skills.

Both guys are clearly the most physically gifted backs in their class. But one guy consistently displayed toughness and competitiveness, and the other didn’t. I know that OSU officially is saying that Wells wasn’t ever a problem, but when multiple scouts repeatedly bring it up, they must have seen something thye considered a flag.
