Like A Bunch of Drowning Rats

Sacramento Bee Beatwriter Matt Barrows wrote something very interesting about the teams in the top ten.

According to Scot McCloughan, just about every team ahead of the 49ers is trying to trade back. Whether it’s because of a dearth of talent or the amount of money required for a Top 10 pick, McCloughan said in a media session with the beatwriters a few minutes ago that seven of the nine teams ahead of the 49ers have called and said they had no problem trading down.

Over the past 5-10 years, the value of the back of the first round can’t be beat. In 2006 I remember hearing an interview with Tannenbaum where he said that one of the three teams above him had offered to switch picks with him, and his half-jokingly half-serious response was “what are you going to give me?”

At first blush, it takes stones to tell a fellow GM that, but it’s borne out again and again. The way the salaries are set, you better be damn sure that a guy is going to be a success, let alone is worth the exorbitant money it’s going to take to sign him.

i was thinking about this issue this week and mike n mike just talked about it. I never pais attention to how much their getting compared to vets. Teams and Owners should have locked out the draft a long time ago until something was done. The issue cant wait till a bargaining agreement. Cant fathom being a Kerry Rhodes and Gholston getting equal or more money.Cap these picks and do it this year.

Pretty obvious that having a top 10 pick is just not worth it anymore. Also shows that just saying “Oh we’ll move down and pick up extra picks and grab ‘Insert Player Name Here’ ” isn’t exactly easy to do because no one actually wants to trade up.

Stupid article. Why wouldn’t any team would be willing to listen to someone who wanted to move up. What would they have to lose?

  7. avatar Harvlis says:

Sorry, I have an extra “would” in there.

I think the story goes, the year the Jets drafted Brick #4 New Orleans had called Tannenbaum about swapping picks (New Orleans had the #2 pick and took Reggie Bush). Tannenbaums response was, what are you going to give me?
