Audible: Who’s Your #1?

by Bassett on April 25th, 2009 at 10:30 am

REMINDER: We’ll be liveblogging, have a chat room set up and much more for later in the day … stay tuned!

Really as we’ve been talking about for weeks, there’s a lot of good guys in this draft, but it’s really going to come down to who falls to the Jets at 17.

So it’s draft day, who’s your guy (guys) at seventeen? Is your guy in the top ten?

As for me, I know they won’t be there at 17, but the few guys I covet most I would trade up for are Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Tyson Jackson in no particular order, if any of them fall to 8 or so … I would LOVE to trade up …

    Guys I covet (no order):
    1. Mark Sanchez
    2. Darrius Heyward-Bey
    3. Knowshon Moreno
    4. Jeremy Maclin
    5. Tyson Jackson
    6. Michael Crabtree
    7. A.B.F. (Anybody But Freeman)

  2. avatar Josh says:

    8. B.J. Raji

  3. avatar EddieC says:

    i second bassett’s last paragraph

  4. avatar mikejets says:

    1. jeremy maclin
    2. crabtree
    3. moreno

  5. avatar UKJetsFan says:

I’m with mikejets – though I’d like Robiskie @52 if we take moreno @17

  6. avatar Nostraboys says:

We have 2 very capable QB’s on our roster. Give one of them a chance!

I have been a fan for 24 years and have seen the Jets draft QB’s and not give them a chance.

    JETS in Cortland NY FINALLY!

  7. avatar MattNYC says:

Being realistic, I think I want Pettigrew… We could make tight end a real position of strength

  8. avatar pound4pound says:

    Sanchez
    Maclin
    Raji
    Moreno

If any of those four somehow slip to 17, or if we can trade up to the 8-12 range to get one of them, that would be a perfect start.

  9. avatar UKJetsFan says:

Gotta agree with you Nostraboys. I think Rex&co have got to give Kellen a chance to run our offence this year – there’ll never be a better chance to succeed if our defence is dominant, especially if we draft him a few extra tools to work with! Get a high-quality WR threat to take the heat off Cotch (Crabtree/Maclin), or add to the running game with Moreno and take a later WR who can take advantage of JCo’s double teams like Robiskie or Wallace.

As for Pettigrew, well, I wouldn’t be to annoyed if we traded down for him and picked up a 3rd, providing we got a good WR and some decent line help, but I think I’d be pretty peeved if we took him at 17…..

  10. avatar Jadden says:

    mark sanchez

    jerremy maclin

    crabtree

    a running back

    a defensive player

  11. avatar Nostraboys says:

Look at the history of tight ends the Jets drafted.

    Johnny Mitchell
    Anthony Becht
    Kyle Brady

    Need I say more!

  12. avatar MEL31602 says:

Definitely Crabtree, Maclin or Jackson if we don’t have to give up the whole draft to get them (assuming none will be there at 17- though Maclin has the best chance). I’m warming up a bit to the idea of Sanchez- I’d rather they take him, even if they have to give up a little, then stay put and take Pettigrew, Harvin, or Heyward Bey. I wouldn’t mind if they took Moreno or traded down and took Britt.

  13. avatar J-E-T-S says:

    you guys are definatily trippin
    1. Crabtree
    2. Orakpo…..I want him, nothing big.
    3. Maclin
    4. Tyson Jackson

  14. avatar Elliot S says:

    In order of preference

    1. Crabtree or Maclin (I assume out of the question)
    2. Moreno
    3. Tyson Jackson (I assume out of the question)
    4. A receiver (Harvin, Nicks, DHB, Britt, in that order)
    5. Sanchez or Freeman (only if one falls to us, don’t want to trade up)
    6. Pettigrew

In general unless one of the big two WRs falls out of the top ten to a spot where we can trade easily, I think the best thing to do is grab Moreno and then take a guy like Robiskie or Massaquoi in the second round. I wouldn’t be upset if we got a different first round WR, but I don’t see the value there in any of them when there are a bunch of worthwhile WRs in the second round and beyond.

So my ideal realistic draft looks like this: (1) Moreno (2) Massaquoi/Robiskie (3) defensive end (4) o-line depth (6) blocking TE (7) backup MLB

  15. avatar George says:

Maclin and he’s gona fall to 17

  16. avatar Nostraboys says:

If you want a WR make a trade to get Crabtree! If you can not Percy Harvin will do just fine

  17. avatar UKJetsFan says:

Elliot S – your ideal draft is nigh on identical to mine – Lets hope Jets war room is reading!! Lol!

  18. avatar Nikolas says:

Round 1: Robert Ayers DE / Jarron Gilbert DT/DE

Round 2: Shone Green RB/Donald Brown RB/ LeSean McCoy RB/Rashad Jennings RB

Round 3: Louis Murphy WR/ Mike Wallace WR/ Mike Thomas WR/ Derrick Williams WR

  19. avatar Brad says:

Wells, Gilbert, Pettigrew, DHB, Moreno- give me one of those and i will be content! Dont like the concept of trading up, we dont have enough picks and we got too many needs!

  20. avatar Nostraboys says:

    Nikolas,’
We don’t need defense in the first round. We need offense! I would not pass on a good RB if left to us. Look at Thomas Jones, he is holding out and getting old.

  21. avatar John says:

    1. Sanchez
    2. Moreno
    3.Maclin
    4. Heyward Bey

  22. avatar Nostraboys says:

    John

We do not need a QB! Why don’t you people listen? Why did we draft Kellen Clemons? To sit the bench. You think all USC QB’s are going to do well in the NFL? Not going to happen. NO QB!

  23. avatar Young says:

    CHECK THIS OUT
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2009/draft/tracker/best_available/index.html

Its SI’s draft database. They list the picks/offer analysis/ and list the best available with a grade next to them

  24. avatar Nostraboys says:

It looks like the Rams locked up Sanchez!

  25. avatar Nikolas says:

    Nostraboys:
Sure we do not need defense in the first round, but Ayers or Gilbert can be special. Moreover, our defense will be dominant. Good running backs and wide receivers can be picked up in rounds 2 and 3. The receivers other than Crabtree and Maclin are not much different and for running backs a Shone Green or a Donald brown are not significant downgrades tp Moreno and Wells.
If your argument is for a QB, I think we have a zero chance for Sanchez and Freeman is a risky proposition.

Pettigrew, which I like, and may solidify our TE sets on offense is a good pick, but I would prefer Ayers’ and Gilbert’s potential.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Aoo4NUYN5IhveasDylwOsDiQ2bYF?slug=ys-dualmockdrafts042509&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Im with giving Kellen a chance but just for INSURANCE we should get Campbell good ball control QB whos just getting better man.

  27. avatar Nostraboys says:

    Nikolas

Look at my post about TE’s.

  28. avatar Organized Chaos says:

    Michael Crabtree
    Jeremy Maclin
Mark Sanchez (Only if it’s a trade at 8)
    Knowshon Moreno
    Tyson Jackson
    Brandon Pettigrew
    Robert Ayers
    Aaron Maybin

NOT Freeman, Harvin, Heyward – Bey, a trade for Campell

  29. avatar Nikolas says:

    Nostraboys:

The Percy Harvin pick if it happens …it will be in the 3rd round. Percy is a great talent but an even greater risk.

  30. avatar Tom says:

    Crabtree
    Maclin
    Pettigrew
    T. Jackson

NO WAY ON FREEMAN OR CAMBELL

  31. avatar J-E-T-S says:

If everything goes wrong though like Washington not getting Sanchez, Raiders or Jaguars get Crabtree.
We should just trade back for more picks and take Donald Brown.
O yea and I will only take defense in first round for ORAKPO, Raji, and Jackson. Didnt say Curry because hes going top 5.

  32. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

I hate T Jackson so much is not even funny….. I dont care what people think. I have seen this guy play and he is an average player….. He should have dominated at LSU and he just didnt

He will not dominate on the next level.

This guy was rated to go in the 20′s three weeks ago now becuase he fits the 3-4 DE he is a top 10 pick??

Maclin falls to us or we trade down….hopefully a team like the Eagles want to trade up for Pettigrew

  33. avatar J-E-T-S says:

Tom you have no reason not to want Jason Campbell.

  34. avatar Mets/Jets Fan says:

I would love Maclin or Crabtree, but they just wont be there. I want to see Moreno @17 and Robinski @52.

I have warmed up to the possibility of Sanchez.

If they take Harvin of Freeman, I might cry. I dont get the obsession with Harvin. He is a WR whose best plays came out of the backfield in college. What makes anyone think he can now make plays out wide at the next level???

  35. avatar Brad says:

Nikolas- watching tv last night, cimini on one of those sports shows on sny- he stated that it seems like the jets are making a late push, really interested in Harvin at 17. I hope it doesnt happen due to his lack of character and supposedly stilll having some issues with his leg, ankle that will need surgery.

  36. avatar Marc says:

Peter King’s got us taking Conor Barwin out of Cincy-

Random but King’s a guy with a lot of inside track info in the league…

  37. avatar J-E-T-S says:

    Met/jets fan-
We all know Crabtree is not falling to 17 we were talking about the possibility of him falling to like 11 or 10 and trading up for him….Just filling you in on the converation.

  38. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

Another example of Peter King being retarded

If we take Barwin at 17 I will drive to floram park and drop everyone in the war room on their ass!!

    I would take him at 52 though…lol

  39. avatar Nikolas says:

The ideal scenario would be, trading down to Arizona’s 31 (they may want Moreno) and we pick Gilbert and one more second round pick.

  40. avatar Tom says:

I got plenty of reasons not to want Jason Cambell. He’s 16-20 as a starter and the Redskins made there playoff run 2 years ago with Todd collins.

  41. avatar seanmac31 says:

My first preference would be Chris Wells, who is the player most likely to radically outperform his draft position. He should be a top five selection, but he’s been dinged a bit and there is value elsewhere. The other players on my short list would include Macklin, Pettigrew and possibly Moreno.

I don’t see the value anywhere else.

  42. avatar Nostraboys says:

Why would you trade for a guy who proved he can not play at the NFL level? STUPID!

NO Jason C. A proven loser.

  43. avatar J-E-T-S says:

That playoff run was mostly off of overmatching their opponents and wanting to win more and please dont bring that silly 16 and 20 stat around here this isnt baseball, he played against better defenses with two or three offensive weapons and he controlled the ball and got better as he got older.

  44. avatar Nostraboys says:

    seanmac31

R U talking TE in the first round?

  45. avatar J-E-T-S says:

How is Jason a proven loser?

  46. avatar seanmac31 says:

I would be fine taking Pettigrew in the first round. He’s arguably one of the top 6-7 players in the draft, and you would be getting him at 17. It doesn’t have any bearing on Keller, as Keller is essentially a wide receiver who you split outside against base personnel to get a good matchup. Tight end is a traditionally undervalued position (which is why Belichick loves drafting them), and Pettigrew would be a tremendous addition to the running game.

  47. avatar J-E-T-S says:

And this coming from the guy who wants to reach in the first round and take Gilbert or draft Percy Harvin so your judging skills are already questionable.

  48. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

There’s really only 2 defensive players I would choose in the first round–Jackson and Raji. For offensive players, Crabtree, Maclin or Moreno if we trade up.

Moreno might still be there @ #17 or we could take Wells, Harvin, or Pettigrew (he might be a bit overvalued @ 17, but we could use him).

If we trade down, say in the mid-late 20s, Pettigrew, Donald Brown, Britt and Nicks are my choices.

The problem is that at #17, there are too many possibilities to say for sure. We could pick at #8, #17, #29, or any number of other places depending on the way the draft board shakes out this year. I do not want to draft a QB in the top 10 though. The contract price would be too high given Detroit’s contract with Stafford.

  49. avatar seanmac31 says:

Yes, it’s not a great defensive draft. Ayers and Larry English would be worth first round consideration, as would Darius Butler, but the real value is on offense and there’s no reason to force the pick.

  50. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

It’s not a bad defensive draft. The reason I would only take Jackson or Raji is because they fit needs on defense. Raji could spell Jenkins and also eventually be his replacement. Jackson would upgrade Ellis/Coleman and could provide a more consistent pass rush. I only take Ayers if we trade down.

The reason I would rather see offense in round 1 is because we have serious holes on offense (deep threat WR & blocking TE being the 2 biggest).

  51. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

And we just upgraded our defense through Free Agency. Time to focus on the offense. But Jackson and Raji are immediate need players. We need a younger more productive DE and we need serious depth at NT, so if you have the chance, you take it.

  52. avatar D in OK says:

Pettigrew after trading down and getting another pick.

  53. avatar Nostraboys says:

    Stupid move Jet organization!

Once again this year will be a washout!

Gave up 2 picks and three players for an unproven player.
