2009 Draft Recap: The Shorter Version

by Bassett on April 26th, 2009 at 5:51 pm

large_sanchez.jpg

We’re still percolating on the draft. For now, it’s about as opposite a draft as we could have imagined for the Jets, but we’ll spell that all out tomorrow morning for ya.

Even though there’s still a round plus to go, the draft is likely over for the Jets. Here’s how things panned out:

  • The Jets moved from #17 to #5 overall to get Mark Sanchez, USC QB giving up their second rounder and three players (DE Kenyon Coleman, S Abram Elam & QB Brett Ratliff) to do so.
  • On Day Two, they moved up to take Iowa RB Shonn Greene giving up their third rounder (#76 overall), their fourth (#115) and 7 (#228).
  • After waiting til the sixth round, the Jets selected Matt Slauson G from Nebraska (OL Coach Bill Callahan’s former player)

If you think it’s over, it’s not over, not by a long shot. The Jets are going to be very active this week picking up Undrafted Free Agents (UDFAs).

Big deal? Tony Richardson, Mike DeVito, Jehuu Caulcrick , Jason Trusnik, Kenwin Cummings and many more might disagree with you.

But … what do you think so far?

pats have lots of late picks, good luck.

  2. avatar UKJetsFan says:

Think its safe to say that it wasn’t what we all expected…..but hey…..least we’re not the Raiders!! Haha!!

Still, it sure is a pretty big gamble from our boys, but if Shonn, TJ and Leon are pounding behind our injury-free line, and Sanchez is hitting Cotch, Keller and Clowney then we’ll look back on this and laugh!

My money’s on Rex finding us a little gem in the UDFA pool too….not sure why, but I just had a feeling he might before the draft even started.

  3. avatar EddieC says:

I think we picked up too huge question marks with huge upside.

We really only have two players to decide whether this draft was a success or not.

Jury will be out within two years.

  4. avatar MIke D. says:

Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard and Marques Douglas all went undrafted in their respective years as well…

  5. avatar Rod Majors says:

I believe Bart Scott was also an undrafted FA by Baltimore a few years back, so you never know. When it comes down to it there isn’t much difference between 6th and 7th rounders and undrafted FA’s, so finding a blocking TE or three to bring into camp shouldn’t be too difficult.

  6. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

im very happy with our draft you can’t clog every hole in 1 draft.
    1 sanchez
    3 greene
    5 sheppard
    6 slauson

there will be undrafted free agents that will be picked up…guys don’t worry.

  7. avatar largebarge says:

I was at Radio City on Saturday afternoon, and when I heard we traded picks with Cleveland I was praying we were gonna take Crabtree, but I just knew we were gonna take Sanchez!!! I really like Sanchez, but I just think we had to give up a little too much for him!!! If we just stayed put at 17, Jeremy Maclin was just sitting there for us!!! Oh well, I guess you can’t please everyone, but I just pray that Sanchez is the real deal, cause if he is’nt………BYE, BYE TANNENBAUM!!!

  8. avatar MEL31602 says:

Sanchez is throwing out the first pitch at the Mets game tomorrow- hopefully the Mets will do better than they did today!

  9. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

Like the players and loved the first trade since we gave up nothing players to maybe get our franchise QB….

Loved Greene ( my favorite RB in the draft he is just a badass) but hated giving up the 4th and 7th… We need depth and we drafted 3 players….lol ……Hilarious

  10. avatar largebarge says:

I would just like to point out that I was the 1st to select Sanchez, and Greene in TJB annual draft contest!!! But, I had whats his face going at #162!!! Wah, Wah, Wah!!!

  11. avatar liam says:

I think its hard to argue with the Sanchez pick in light of what they gave up, but, to draft a RB at the top of the 3rd round, and give up the 4th and 7th picks to get him, is a very questionable move. I thought for sure we would have added a player at TE, DL or WR with at least one of those picks.

  12. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

If we surround him with one or two more weapons he should be ok this season.

  13. avatar Chris says:

If Sanchez can run under his own passes and spell at NT when Jenkins gets winded- then this draft was a success.

  14. avatar will says:

this team reminds me of the 04 steelers, except we have no rival to plax. we got a good o-line. a rookie qb. experienced d. and were mediocre last year. however, my $ is against us going 15-1…

  15. avatar SackDance99 says:

Mel Kiper, Herm Edwards, McShay and JAWS all called Sanchez the best pick of the draft. Why did I highlight Jaws? Remember, Jaws famously called KC the best QB of the 2006 draft. Jaws said the Jets had “the worst starting QB situation in the NFL in regards to a starting QB with experience.” He also said that Sanchez is the QB of the future and the only question is when the future begins. He still likes KC, but he was all for Sanchez. Now, can we all stop citing Jaws in support of KC? That ship has sailed. It’s now the Sanchez era for the NY Jets.

  16. avatar Mrjetgreen says:

We certainly didn’t go for quantity so I hope Sanchez and Greene prove to be quality.

There is much concern taking a junior QB with only one year as a starter. Sanchez does carry himself well and is a good athlete but we will have to wait and see. I hope they make him beat out Clemens for #1 but something tells me he will be given preference.

I liked the Greene pickup mainly because he produced big time last year with 1850 yards and 20 TD’s. We haven’t had a big bruising back in a long time and that’s what he needs to be.

Football.com likened Matt Slauson to Pete Kendall. The ghost of Kendall lives on!

  17. avatar clint says:

I agree I know theres some undrafted people I’d really love that fell. I’ll list those soon!

  18. avatar liam says:

clint, is morrah the te from cal still on the board. i saw him play twice last year and liked him. would not have minded us taking him with our 6th (in fact wouldn’t have even minded if we had taken him with our 4th–of course that was before we traded it).

  19. avatar ian says:

i really like slauson’s size, versatility, and familiarity with our blocking scheme. if he can be an adequate fill-in, it is a good pick. not sure whether he has enough potential to be a future, long term option at LG or RT, though.

  20. avatar ian says:

also, i can’t wait to see this year’s browns defense. they will be great at standing around and reading and deciding what to do before reacting.

  21. avatar hojo3 says:

I wonder if there are any plans to go for boldin or edwards…TJ and future pick maybe? I feel like they are going to get someone since they didn’t in the draft. It was our biggest need and they ignored it?? I would be surprised if they didn’t have a plan to get aWR…maybe even Harrison for a year or two…I know he is passed his prime, BUT he can still play..defenses can’t ignore him, he can teach clowney and the other youngins how it’s done, and he will probably come cheap since he has been on ice for a long time. I hope Boldin. This would give Woody a team worthy of the new stadium…people may start buying up those PSLs. Whatever they do, they don’t ignore the WR position.

  22. avatar Clint says:

Liam, yes as of now he’s still undrafted so lets hope for the best. I like Mike Mickens corner back from Cincinnatti.

  23. avatar SackDance99 says:

I agree with Don Banks. The Jets are going for it in 2009.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/don_banks/04/26/snap.judgments/index.html?eref=si_nfl

Don’t worry about DL depth. Rex knows defense and the Jets already have lots of bodies on defense. Maybe Pace and or VG will play DE in certain packages. Maybe Pitoitua, DeVito (who I liked a lot), Douglas and Green graded highly with Rex. Heck, maybe Pouha, who I dislike, can be transformed with Rex. We never complain about our special teams because we know Coach Westhof will coach them up, so let’s give Rex some slack.

As for WR or even blocking TE, I think Rex and Schotty will surprise some folks. Heck, Mort on ESPN just said the Jets are talking to Plax! Let’s sit tight, this is going to be some ride!

  24. avatar Zartan says:

maybe i need to check another Vid on Greene ,the one i saw he couldnt break a takcle to save his life. So i dont know where the bruser back come from.

  25. avatar Chrebookie says:

initial reaction to the trade was one of shock, I was never really interested in Sanchez but…

In hindsight the we gave up 3 players that I wasnt really confident in, and a 2nd rounder for what could be a franchise QB.

wanted crabtree but to see him slip to 10 makes me wonder what the coaches were actually seeing in him and i wasnt.

I wanted Shonn Greene before the draft, and we got him. DUDE IS A BEAST. He is a bruiser and will work great with Little Leon. I see limited days left for TJ.

  26. avatar brian g says:

Plax is a great teammate if you go by what the giants players say/said about him. He’s just a headache for the coaches.
if coughlin couldnt handle him, then i dont think ryan can.
But you know what, this guy is a stud.

  27. avatar Brad says:

I wish we just got rid of the pain in the butt complaining RB who isnt making 5 mil, but only 3 now. Traded him for a 5th and could of picked up Rashad Jennings, who last time i looked was still available in the 7th. Many rating sites had him in the top 5-8 RB, cant believe he fell so far!

  28. avatar Brendan says:

I know Kenyon Coleman wasn’t Aaron Smith or anything, but who starts now? A 10 person defense isn’t a good thing. He ate up space and blockers, and I don’t know if we have a full-time player on the roster that can do that.

Before the draft, I had said numerous times that I wanted Green, because he can essentially do what Jones does (run in between the tackles, grind out yards, move the chains, and occasionally bust a long run).

I will hold judgement on Sanchez until I actually see him play, but I wil say that I thought he was overvalued leading up to the draft. Still, he has the intangibles I like to see in a QB, so who knows.

  29. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Zartan,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrWZwH9VVJU

Check out the TD run at :20 and the ridiculous “are you kidding me” run at 1:21.

  30. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

    PLAXICO…
I hope he pleads not guilty so he can get his butt into our camps and we can get that weapon that helped Eli grow.
Hey SackDance99 do you have a link and when is Plax’s Court Date?

  31. avatar trevor says:

pick up 5-10 undrafted free agents

  32. avatar ian says:

random note on slauson–at 6’5 with long arms and great vertical, i wonder if westhoff can use him to block kicks.

  33. avatar CA Jets Fan says:

Harrison will not be pciked up. He can barely run.

I do think it is a good point in that they may still make a play for a WR, but just not one you all may have expected. Leon will still get paid, and Sanchez will cost some serious money.

TJ is going to be traded, but I think it may be for a guy worth the price tag of a Miles Austin type money and a pick in return.

Boldin and Edwards cost to much. Plus Edwards drops to many balls, and Boldin is one hit from a career ending injury the way he plays.

TJ will be delt. If it is for a WR then great, if not then it will be for picks, or maybe depth on the DL.

I love the picks, and thought we really got bang for the buck. Leon and Shonn will be a great compliment of power and speed. Slauson can fill a nice backup void for the elders on the line.

I also really like our young crop of recievers. Not every team has superstars, and they still do fine. San Diego throws more to Gates and their RB’s more than they do the WR’s. Cotchery and Stuckey, with Smith and Clowney are a nice group with Keller and Leon catching balls too.

Our defense is going to be stellar. I really like the nastiness it brings, and will definitely take the pressure off of Sanchez, because as sure as I am of TJ getting traded, I am positve Sanchez wins the starting spot.

He is too popular, and for the sake of PSLs he starts over Clemens. It may not be the ebst move today, but Eli ended up with a Superbowl, as did Peyton.

I think the Jets are making all of the right moves with a firey coach, a GM with something to prove, and an owner willing to spend whatever it takes to be the brand in the city.

BTW this is the best time to trade TJ. He comes off of his best season. He will be on a decline 1-2 years from now, and you can get great value for him here. A team like even Cleveland, or Houston, or New Orleans would love TJ.

How about TJ for one of New Orleans many young and talented recievers?

  34. avatar hojo3 says:

when does Plax go to trial…are they still trying for a deal?

  35. avatar Clint says:

    Aaron Kelly-WR-clemson
    Ryan Purvis-te-BC
    Darry Beckwith-linebacker-LSU
    Danelle Ellerbe-Linebacker-Georgia

  36. avatar CA Jets Fan says:

    Kyle

Plaxico is a cancer, and will cost to much money.

I would love for them to get a nice young guy from NOrleans and trade with TJ and maybe even get the receiver and a pick back.

  37. avatar mike says:

The Jets spent probably thousands of dollars scouting thousands of players and they pick….three. I’m tired of selling off depth for one or two prospects every year. Why can’t we sit tight and take the “best player available” like the rest of the league. Not every Pro bowler is a first rounder. Many come from the fourth round on (see Brady, Washington etc.) Instead we spend a fortune buying everyone else’s free agents instead of developing our own. One trade too many today Tanny.

  38. avatar Hoz The Jets says:

I wonder if we can trade back into the 7th rd and pickup TE cameron morrah?

  39. avatar Hangar says:

    Cherebookie
Word in Texas is the Tree was a little bit high on himself during his interviews…
According to Leach his College coach it started with his interview in Cleveland….

I listened to him on a number of occasions and could not see it. Sorry to see him in SF…no one to throw him the ball.

    Looking forward to the season..

  40. avatar Hoz The Jets says:

Rashard jennings is still on the board, who would of thought.

  41. avatar hojo3 says:

    CA Jets fan,
some good thoughts. Right on about TJ’s trade value being high right now.
I also like our receivers and love Keller. It would be great to add a Veteran WR with a Rexy “Be yourself and have fun” kind of attitude, someone who the younger guys can look up to and challenge. Do you think the saints would give up colston?

  42. avatar Pdubbs says:

Yea we got sanchez for nothing and he is going to be good….Why ? because he wants to be here he went to SC which gets good QB’s and with our running game thats just got alot better…..should be fine.

Can’t wait to see our crappy D in Cleveland hahaah !

  43. I’m disappointed. Three players? The NFL draft is about getting depth and finding gems. Look at recent Jet draft history: Brad Smith 4th round pick, Leon Washington 4th round pick, Kerry Rhodes 4th round pick. Stuckey 7th round pick, Derrick Ward 7th round pick. There are so many gems in those latter rounds. Those are what make NFL teams.

When I think of only 3 picks, I think about the Redskins who seemed to mortgage draft after draft and always seemed to be an injury or two away from imploding. You need depth in the NFL, injuries are too common.

  44. avatar SackDance99 says:

Zartan, also look at the TD run at 4:44…that type of power and elusiveness is hard to find, then the next run shows surprising speed. Greene, IMO, looks better on film than his pre-draft write ups, which were mediocre.

Plax’s next court date is June 15. My guess is that he will plead out by then. Then, Goodell will suspend him for a few games and he will play next season. Just my prediction.

  45. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

    SackDance99-
Where did you hear that from?

And The Giants won a Super Bowl with that Cancer.

  46. avatar dave b says:

Knicker, I agree about depth, but look at those REEEACHES you just pulled out for examples!! Stuckey!? Brad ‘ the BUST’ Smith?? Ward (didn’t we cut him)?

See also: the other 90% of the guys we’ve drafted late.

While I generally agree with your argument, there is something to be said for salvaging picks to get the guys you wholeheartedly believe will be the best, as opposed to say, taking a chance on getting the next ***GASP*** Brad Smith!!

  47. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

Well fellas, if you’re in the group of “disappointed fans”, i will say that you never know what kind of deals will happen in the months leading up to training camp..
Trades, veterans from other teams being cut, UDFA’s… This team is still being put together for 2009.

For those that want Plax, i’d rather go with Wallace Wright than Plax, (PB is a dumbass, let’s face it)

You know a veteran TE or 2 will come in.. should be interesting..

  48. avatar dave b says:

After the Cards drafted Wells, TJ’s value in a trade for Boldin likely went down…I could see, though, something for BrayLONE

  49. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

About Plax talking To The Jets..

  50. avatar Clint says:

Crosby from Texas is still left on the board and Marlon Lucky would be a good practice squad running back.

  51. avatar Hoz The Jets says:

Mort of espn said the jets are talking to plaxico…………stay tune, its seem like the jets are going all or nothing this yr

  52. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

Ok will everybody stop getting my hopes up for another Receiver without providing Links. Thanks in Advance.

  53. avatar will says:

    Mike:

You’re missing the approach: this is a win now team. They don’t have time to cultivate 5th rd talent and other ‘floaters’ as I call them. When drafting Sanchez, Ryan said he “wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t think he was ready to step on the field opening day.” That means the time is now. We were missing 4 or 5 pieces… we addressed 3 of them. Now we just need to get a WR w/ some pizzaz and deal that 2010 1st and 3rd pick for an acrobatic WR.

Lastly, we’re not trading TJ. We need him. He lead the AFC in rushing. He’s the main guy in our ’3-headed monster.’

  54. avatar dave b says:

Hoz: Didn’t we go all or nothing last year too?? HA this franchise just doesn’t surpirse me anymore and i’m not sure if I’m happy or upset about that.

  55. avatar will says:

…we’ll just pay him with that ‘internet money’, buddy,..

  56. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

we should not trade TJ. If he needs another 500000 to be happy then lets placate him. We need the maturity and leadership. Most rookie RB’s dont last the whole season even when theyre not taking the majority of snaps, see Mendenhall and Felix Jones. A few bucks and a firm handshake can go a long way with TJ, lets keep the probowl backfield intact. TJ’s workouts are crazy and he will stay healthy for this year. We will have a question mark if hes gone, the team wants to make the running attack the focal point of our offense.

  57. avatar dave b says:

last year in terms of singing BRETT FARVE

  58. avatar dave b says:

RE: TJ, he led the AFC in rushing after we gave him a pro-bowl line. The year before he had one TD. Trade him while his value is HIGH!!

  59. avatar jay says:

do you guys think kc going to start or mark

  60. avatar dave b says:

And I suggest trading him ONLY if he provides us with a solution at a more glaring question mark, such as WO.

  61. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Kyle,

    Here’s the link:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4029680

I’m guessing that Plax will plead out with a slap on the wrist and not hard time. For one, his lawyer is a well-known criminal defense attorney. Second, Morgenthau is stepping down as DA and won’t care about a Plax prosecution. Third, Bloomberg and Woody are friends…remember the failed West Side Stadium and Favre getting the key to the city? So, I’m just guessing that, with the passage of time and the changing politics, Plax might be able to get lucky. As for Goodell, he lives in NY and Woody, again, is one of the most influential owners in the NFL. Plax will be suspended, but I’m guessing it won’t be more than a few games.

  62. avatar pound4pound says:

The Shonn Greene pickup should let us do the Earth, Wind and Fire thing that the Giants did with Jacobs, Bradshaw, and Ward. (Assuming TJ is back in 2009.) Let TJ and Leon tire out the defense for three quarters, then pound the softened D with a 228-pounder in the 4th quarter.

If the o-line stays healthy, we could have a top-3 rushing attack.

  63. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Kyle,

Mort (Chris Mortenson of ESPN) reported that the Jets have been talking to Plax’s agent. IMO, if the Jets sign Plax, he will play this year.

  64. avatar pound4pound says:

jay, I hope it’s KC that starts on day 1. I don’t doubt that Sanchez might be the better option right out of the gate because he’s smart and has more raw talent than KC, but Sanchez only started 16 games in college. I’d like to let him learn this year – a “pro redshirt” year like Carson Palmer and Rivers had – so he can be very well-prepared for 2010.

Of course, if KC craps the bed in pre-season, Rex is going to have to think twice.

  65. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

    Thanks for that SackDance.

  66. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

So If Sanchez just all ot performs KC in the Camps and pre season you all still think KC should start?

  67. avatar Chrebookie says:

    hangar-
heard something on the radio about leach making comments about mangini not drafting crabtree. hear anything bout this?

felling better about the “savior” yet? like i said my initial shock, much like the guys from the clip, has been greatly subdued to the fact that this is an extremely unique trade in the fact had mangini not been the coach of cleveland i think it would have cost us a lot more. or just would have never happened. in the end as many have noted had we finished 10-6 etc… we would have had aprx same pick and would have been left reaching for a franchise QB.

i’m left wondering if things are finally starting to align for us.

JETS still sitting at 50-1 odds makers havent adjust line yet.
I guarantee you this drops significantly if we add a decent WR

  68. avatar JollyGreenGiant says:

Can we immediately begin to call Sanchez the “Golden Boy” or should we wait a year or so? Considering he had great talent around him, and played against lesser defenses…well what exactly does he bring that was worth all that we gave up?
Did we draft him to sell PSL’s? Did we draft him because he has a pleasant personality and is very likable?

Then we gave up all but one pick for a guy that flunked out. An academic pea brain. Last time I checked one needed intelligence and physical gifts to have success. Curtis Martin was great in part because he was bright.

We gave up our 4th round pick…bad move…look how well we have done in that round in the past.

We got 3 players in the draft…NE got something like 12.

This better work. Please not anothe failed jets drafting experience!

  69. “Knicker, I agree about depth, but look at those REEEACHES you just pulled out for examples!! Stuckey!? Brad ‘ the BUST’ Smith?? Ward (didn’t we cut him)?”

    Leon Washington? Kerry Rhodes?

But you want role players in the late rounds. A Rhodes and Washington are the outliers. What you can settle for in the mid-late rounds are guys that can contribute in smaller ways. Brad is good on special teams and for non-traditional offensive plays. A team player.

And we did cut Ward, but it doesn’t negate the fact that he ran for 1000 yards last year. You can find players to do what Greene is likely to do without sacrificing the next Rhodes or Washington.

  70. avatar SackDance99 says:

IMO, if Sanchez picks up the playbook (and everyone, including Sanchez himself, describe him as “cerebral”) and performs well in training camp and pre-season, why give KC his 9th pro start instead of Sanchez his 1st?

  71. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Jolly,

The Pats now have to cut a bunch of players and the Jets will become the team of choice for every UDFA and cut player. There’s always a yin to that yang.

  72. avatar JollyGreenGiant says:

Hey now…wait just a New York Minute here. Isn’t this poster sackdance who has an incredible gift for using numbers to prove his point the same guy that justified and rationalized the “do whatever it takes” mind set to go get Favre?

Seems to me he is on that same glide path with our new QB. Now I like Sanchez,,he has some magic with him for certain.

But isn’t he the same exact height as KC, and didn’t sackdance already prove via skewed stats that 6’2″ QB’s can’t get it done? Just asking. Is Sanchez 6’2″ somehow taller than KC?

  73. avatar Brendan says:

I do have to say, after I saw the trade with the Browns, I would have bet my life savings on the Jets taking Jarron Gilbert in rd. 3.

  74. avatar Jets4life says:

When I heard that we traded up to pick # 5 I was hoping for crabtree but i knew that we were going to get sanchez. i like sanchez i just felt that crabtree is not a gamble and there is no way he will be a bust. Sanchez loooks great and I like him but it was a gamble so hopefully he turns out to be the franchise qb we all want

  75. avatar Hangar says:

All, lets believe and enjoy. We have been looking for this and now it is here….All we can do is wait and see!!!!

This is not a 1 year plan!!!

50-1..to be honest, I do not see them winning the SB this year so 50-1 is no big deal and would not draw my money!!!

KC will not start, this kid came here to be our QB and will be unless he gets hurt.

  76. avatar Chrebookie says:

not this again with the height B.S. give it a rest

  77. avatar Chrebookie says:

oh and I have a womens Kellen Clemens jersey for sale!

Cheap!!! Only worn twice. email suckerQB@hotmail.com for info. will trade for bucket with hole in it OBO.

Maybe KC’s mom or sister is interested!

  78. I guess my point is you want to get a Rhodes/Washington, but will settle for a Brad Smith or Chansi Stuckey both who bring depth and value for very little price.

  79. avatar Chrebookie says:

hangar just consider this… while the SB is always a longshot for ANY team. look the other teams at 50-1
    KC
    Cleveland
    SF
    Cincy
    Oak
    STL
    Detroit

there is ALOT more VALUE in the JETS with the same odds

  80. avatar MEL31602 says:

    Jennings and Underwood gone….

  81. avatar Hangar says:

    Bookie
    Funny…hold on to it.
On the Jets Shop they are getting $9.99 for jerseys from tha past…

  82. avatar Chrebookie says:

    left this point out-

the JETS are already playoff caliber team. you cant get 50-1 on a playoff team.

  83. avatar BigBear says:

Jets schedule is pretty tough out of the box:

@Houston,New Englad,Tennessee. May make sense to have KC start unless Sanchez clearly outplays him.

  84. avatar Hangar says:

I guess we may be the best 50-1 on the board.

If all of those were on our schedule, I’d take it!!!

I have no complaints with how the draft went. Sanchez was by far the best of the three quarterbacks available-by far-and the team didn’t give up any picks in next year’s draft to get him. Considering what I expected a package to move into the top five to look like, I have nothing I can complain about. Yes, there were players I very much liked who were available at 17 and lower- Ayers, Oher and Wells in particular- but it never crossed my mind that we could move up to 5 without giving up next year’s one, and I wasn’t prepared to make that kind of investment in any quarterback not named Jay Cutler.

I’ve always been impressed by Greene, and I think he fits in very nicely with the stable of backs that we have now. New England are masters at emphasizing certain backs for certain matchups, and we now have a range of players that will allow us to do the same thing. I’m far more comfortable with him than I would have been with a workout warrior who doesn’t play well like Gilbert. No complaints.

Plaxico is worth calling up, but I think there’s a decent chance he will do time and will be suspended for the season. If not, he’s clearly the most attractive option available on the free agent market.

In terms of who should start, I see no reason why there shouldn’t be an open competition. If Clemens wins out, he should play. If Sanchez wins out, he should play. What’s wrong with that?

  86. avatar Chrebookie says:

    plax doin time?!

right like 100hrs of community service

  87. avatar Kixworld says:

Greene and Jacobs are the same mold this dude is big and he likes to bang gut runner pure power nice pick

  88. avatar Doug in Long Valley says:

SD99, Steve Young was gushing about the Jets picking Sanchez (calling him the next Drew B.). All I kept thinking about was, now we have two 6’2″ QB’s,

If you had to look at your crystal ball and project #6 as the starter what do you think we’re looking at?

  89. avatar JetsRutgersMets says:

Ill be honest, I know nothing about Shonn Green. Im a Big East guy. Im going to see if I can find some highlights of him on youtube. I have faith in Rex Ryan and after how he ALREADY revamped the Defense, Im going to give him the benfit of the doubt that he did the right thing by trading half of our draft picks away.

  90. avatar tom says:

if the jets by some miracle picked up plax we are going to go far. and by far im talking afc championship or superbowl.

think about it. the giants had earth wind and fire.
jets- leon TJ and now greene

giants -one plax, one possession guy
    jets- plax possibly, than JC

    giants-steller O-line
    jets- pretty much the same

giants-good linebacker in peirce good Dline in strahan and tuck
jets- bart scott. david harris? ellis? JENKINS

GUYS THE TIME IS NOW lets go far. lets not be the same old jets.

  91. avatar tom says:

and also think about how the giants fell apart this year after plax was gone.

what was it? 4 out of 5 games they lost? including the playoff game? (i may be wrong about that)

  92. avatar Bungi says:

Bottom line is that you cannot win in this league without a franchise quarterback which I think Sanchez is. I think we needed to take this chance at some point or another or it would be the same of maybe making the playoffs and then losing in the first or second round. I love it! Viva la Sanchez!

The one final move I would make is to try and get Braylon here. I would give up next years first for him. However after that we really have to concentrate on stockpiling picks over the next couple of years.

  93. avatar Hatman013 says:

    What Bungi said.

  94. avatar StvDoe says:

For those of you suggesting we trade TJ, it ain’t gonna happen.

You can’t get anything for a 31 yr. old RB who wants a new deal.

And even if you could, it’d be pretty foolish.

He’s missed OTAs. Who cares? It’s not as if he’s a new CB learning the scheme. Or an OL learning new blocking assignments. He’s a well experienced RB, the easiset position to step in and play. And he’s damned productive.

It would be different if he was holding out of camp, but that’s STILL easy to overcome for a RB.

The amount of hand wringing over this tempest in a teapot is amazing to me.

Jones will be on the field opening day. Count on it.

  95. avatar dave b says:

Knicker, I agree. I think that the Pats and Eagles stay on top, largely, because they good at racking up tons of draft picks, thereby increasing their chances of getting a Rhodes, Washington, or *ungh* Brady.

  96. avatar dave b says:

Jets-Rutgers Mets: good highlight video was posted on thsi site earlier today

  97. avatar Lj says:

brett favre and steve young, who sanchez reminds me of in a way, were both 6’2 and ended up having great careers, among others. 6’2 is fine height for a quarterback i wouldnt worry about that too much.

  98. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

Well I think we all have come to the consensus that WE HAVE TO GET BRAYLON EDWARDS..

  99. avatar seanmac31 says:

We don’t have to get anyone.

  100. avatar Brendan says:

everyone needs to take a time out on the braylon edwards talk. yes, Mangini traded with us, but as part of his bigger plan to accumulate a massive amount of picks. When you realize that they have no one to throw to now (remember…stallworth is going to jail for playing mario kart: real life version), why would they trade an extremely young and talented WR?

  101. avatar Zartan says:

thanks sackdance, showed me a little more. He still looks like he running to hit the floor but i guess he’s avoiding the big hit which is smart. he showed a good cut back but only one broken tackle. He may be the answer.

  102. avatar boos says:

no screw braylon. he drops way too much.

    we can find someone else.

if david clowney doesnt step up. he has the body build and speed to be the type of receiver we need

  103. avatar david i says:

I love it. In my humble opinion, this draft was not deep at all. To come out of it with Sanchez and Greene in the first three rounds is fine by me. Every draft of every year does not produce 7 guys that make a team. If you get three contributors, that is a success. Yes, depth is important, but I would rather have these two guys, then another first rounder to fill a need, that is nowhere near the caliber these two guys.

    Sanchez has what it takes!

Greene is going to help turn this team into the three headed monster that the Giants had used to win the SB. He is the perfect compliment to TJ and LJ. A perfect short yardage head-banger. I’m psyched!!!!!!!

  104. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

No We Definitely Need Braylon Edwards.

  105. avatar jetsfaninmiami says:

sign a WR and we are looking pretty good…….Plax/boldin/edwards/anyother high end option, JC, and clowney sounds good to me

  106. avatar rich says:

i think we should all tip our hats to tannenbaum and the front office for.. a) firing mangini b) not trying to convince favre to stay and play (they said they would but lets face it, he was a marketing tool and rex never reached out to him) c) getting out of cap trouble (although getting rid of chris baker wasnt totally necessary and could come back to haunt us),, revamping the secondary and getting scott to put our defense in a great position.. c) making a bold move and saying ‘screw all these picks, there aint much value later on, lets go ahead and get the guys that will make an impact soon

  107. avatar Steve W says:

I lived in Lincoln for 2 years and am a huge Huskers fan and let me tell you Slauson is a big, mean, intense dude. Doesn’t hurt that he is a Callahan guy. With an aging Faneca, may be one of those gems everyone is talking about.

  108. avatar Clint says:

Players that are undrafted to look at:
    Darry Beckwith-lb
    Dannell Ellerbe-lb
    Quan Cosby-wr
    Aaron Kelly-wr
    Ryan Purvis-te
    Emanuel Cook-s
    Alex Boone-tackle

  109. avatar Lj says:

I think we had a pretty good draft. In my opinion we came out of it with 3 guys who i know will make the team and contribute. I think sanchez will be a star, greene will be good for us, and slauson will be a starter on our line one day. We didnt shy away and we moved up to pick the guys that we knew would help our team, and didnt settle. Nice aggressive draft.

  110. avatar JerryB says:

TJ will not be cut. We will need all the cap space we can get for Sanchez and Leon. It cost more to cut TJ than to keep him. TJ will report to camp because he has no other options. You also need the RB depth.

  111. avatar JesusRevis says:

The only thing that matters is Sanchez. If he becomes what the Jets front office thinks he will, then Tannenbaum and Co are geniuses and this is a great draft. If Sanchez fails, Tanny could lose his job. When things come to fruition, it wont matter what Shonn Greene and Slauson are doing, all that matter is Sanchez.

    In Sanchez we trust

  112. avatar TheRealRK says:

Its is bizarre, the Jets have less players on their roster now then they did before the draft started. That’s a rarity. Of course that changes once they sign the rookie free agent but its strange to create more holes at some spots after a draft instead of filling them. But its all about Sanchez and if he’s the real deal the rest won’t matter that much

  113. avatar JerryB says:

I’m not concerned with replacing Coleman. Ryan schemes his defenses using the strengths of the players he has. He doesn’t get players to fit a specific scheme. I think we will see Gholston playiing a lot with his hand on the ground as part of a DE rotation.

  114. avatar Hangar says:

Young Jet…not sure we all believe that!!!

I’d rather stay where we are than take Braylon..
We already had one receiver who dropped everything his way

  115. avatar TannyVision says:

I’d like to thank espn for their free advertising, on behalf of the Jets, to undrafted free agents.

  116. avatar Bent says:

My attitude to this draft is the same as pretty much every other draft though…hopefully the players they got will do good and I look forward to seeing them develop. Simplistic, I know.

I have a few reservations, but I suppose that’s inevitable when you add higher rated guys than your picks would have otherwise given you.

They successfully did the same thing two years ago and netted Revis and Harris, but if either one of those picks did not pan out, it would have been a disaster. By the way, they went 4-12 that year and their lack of depth was exposed, especially on both lines.

With the loss of Elam and Coleman and the addition of nobody through the draft, the Jets defense actually got worse, certainly in terms of depth, unless any of the UDFA’s pan out.

  117. avatar dcjetsfan says:

Mixed on the draft….Was hoping they would keep all their picks or move back and get an additional pick or two. Was hoping we’d shy away from QB and look at DE and WR early.

I agree the cost to move up and grab Sanchez was not steep. I wanted to see them get an upgrade for Coleman anyways and I was not excited when they resigned Elam so fine with shipping those players t Cleveland.

Was hoping Ratliff was going to be our future but I trust Tanny, Rex and the rest of the staff to properly evaluate KC and Ratlff vs the QB draft prospects and make the right move.

I am good with the move to get Shonn Green. Clear dropoff between Green and the next best available RB and TJ is likely in his last yr.

Sanchez just has to be the answer – we’ve gonna have a ton of money tied up in him and Gholston…

  118. avatar Old Rich says:

I wonder why we gave Cleveland Ratty. Was that their choice, or were the Jets eager to keep KC?
