Mort: Jets Talking to Plaxico Burress
Quick update that many of you heard and let us know about:
Apparently, the Jets are talking to former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, according to a report from Chris Mortensen (renowned for often being wrong) on ESPN’s draft coverage.
I don’t think his court date for the shooting-himself-in-the-leg incident has been decided yet (it has been adjourned until June), but that whole issue must restrict his asking price…it has to really, because the Jets don’t have much cap space once the rookies are signed.

wouldn’t mid him at all for the right price
-
can he even play this year?
sign him regardless. His price is probably at an all-time low and i would estimate he is still like 85-90% as efficient as he was w/ the g-men in ’0. The man can get up and catch touchdowns… -
I would absolutely LOVE this…don’t have to give up a thing except cap room.
He’s everything I would want in a wide receiver despite his attitude.
This would make me feel SO much better about the draft.
-
He is exactly what we are looking for on the field
-
He is a great talent but I wonder if he is worth all the off field drama…
-
Plex is going to get suspended, plus do we want a receiver who shot himself in the leg.
RB note:
On NFL.com it shows that:
Rashad Jennings and Jeremiah Johnson still have not been drafted. I know we got green already, but they we are going to run the ball, we need to take one of these two guys (Jennings preferably) to add into the mix. -
if we get plexx i dunno how i would feel really….
-
I don’t want Plax. Please, no, for the love of god.
And on a side note I don’t get the Mort bashing, he’s right a lot more often than he’s wrong, and he breaks more news than most. Oh well. -
Come On Hes The Reason Eli is what he is now we have to bring him in or Braylon to help develop Sanchez.
-
sign him, screw the fact he shot himself in the leg.
what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger…
-
Jennings picked by Jags….
-
Plax will take our offense to the next level
Qb dirty sanchez
Rb jones washington greene
Te keller
Fb richardson
Wr cotch plax clowney stuckyIf we get chemistry with dirty and behind our D…….there’s no reason why we should miss the playoffs
-
Tiquan Underwood is still available – bet we pick him up, along with Gregg Carr 6’6″ 216 out of Florida State
TE:
Kevin Brock, Rutgers: 6’5″ 255 – He can block, but can’t catch
Travis McCall: 6’2″ 276 – used as a third tackle and they were talking about him having the athletic ability to transition to fullback, hoa about just keeping him as a TE
Rylan Reed: 6’6″ 308 – moved over to the offensive line, but we could switch back to TE -
is he looking at any time in jail? if not go get him
-
the reason the court date was postponed is that they tried to plea bargain out of a prison sentence and prosecution wouldnt have it. bloomberg kinda drew a line in the sand. he’s probably going to have to do some time. why do you think the giants gave up?
-
a 1 year deal would work, i suppose…
-
underwood just got picked :(
-
Guys what do you mean by dirty sanchez as a white guy it really sounds racist think about it dirty as in mexican or he plays dirty spits in guys faces or what as loyal jet fan we should find a differnt nick name there you go BENT make a poll out of it but dirty sanchez has to go
-
Yeah, I saw that Jennings got picked up, Tiquan Underwood is gone to. However, Ian Johnson from Boise is still there as well.
Plex: There are signs that you observe regarding a player and whether or not he will be a valued
He does not seem to have the attitude issues of a T.O., he is more a team guy. However, the guy literally shot himself in the leg. Whatever happened to standards.
Now standards can be lowered if he comes really cheap, but like I said, I think he is going to face a long suspension.
-
Bent,
If you care it’s renowned.
-
thats supposed to be a “valued member of the team.” on the first sentence of the Plex comment.
-
I think it will be a great thing. plaxico is what we are missing a big, tall WR who s a play maker.
who cares about the drama…….as long as he is ready on Sunday. -
Palx is a major headache. Who needs a player that will miss practices and team meetings besides aoo of the off the field stuff.
-
I like his versatility of course, but this is the same guy that has a terrible attitude and will demand a new contract EVERY season.
-
Lets out it this way since we are going after Plax that means the Jets know they need one more receiver so that doesnt shoot down getting Braylon Edwards.
-
Dirty sanchez is just 1 of his nick names………..not racist at all, I guess it comes from his hard play on the field………sorry to anyone that took this the wrong way.
-
‘Bout time got Jets land a good receiver gone bad!
-
Look up dirty sanchez @ http://www.urbandictionary.com, if you want to know.
-
I know we could use plax in the worst way but I want nothing to do with this guy. He probably won’t even play this year. I would give up next years one to bring in Braylon.
Dirty Sanchez is actually a sexual term Kixworld.
-
Without Plax the Giants don’t even get to the Super Bowl.
-
Yea I think we will stick with Franchez.
-
Yeah, I’d rather have Braylon as well. Dropped balls aside, there’s less baggage, almost no risk that he won’t play, and he’s younger and therefore doubles as a possible long-term solution to our WR quandry.
I think we can do it for TJ and a pick…or hell, even just one of next year’s picks perhaps.
-
I would not give up next years one to bring in Braylon. Indications are that next year will be a strong draft as not that many of the juniors came out this year. If the average amount of Juniors come out next year, the draft will be loaded.
Now, if we pick up Ian Johnson and Jeremiah Johnson to add into the mix at running back, I might be willing to consider trading TJ, an escalating pick (no higher than 2), and perhaps a third stringer, for Braylon. The Browns just picked up two young wide receivers who are somewhat polished and could start. -
Plax would be a great pick up, but who knows what his penalty will be? ,,,,, can he bcome a respectable citizen and a team player? if he can the Jets would have a great player
-
or TJ and Brad smith for Braylon
-
bottom line: Giants wouldnt have won a supberbowl without Plax. He has personality concerns, but hopefully he will learn from his mistakes.
-
Another great move
JETS!!!!!! go get Plaxico Burress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he can help Mark
-
Plaxico will cost us no compensation I think he learned his lesson we should give him a shot and besides the medowlands is his home
-
Plax leverage would seem to be very low, though he walked away from the Giants when asked to take a pay cut. I know my page is off a bit on the number and the Jets should be right around 13.7 in actual cap room, but who know how much of that they want to use up. I guess alot depends on how the new rules affect the contract of Sanchez. Hes going to get close to 30 million guaranteed but no top QB has carried a 1st year cap hit over 2.8 or 2.9 million bucks. The new rules could change that alot Id imagine.
-
Dirty sanchez a Sexual term okay then that will work im good now
-
We dont have the cap space for Braylon Edwards.
-
I think Sack is right on the money, Brad Smith is one of Mangini’s Guys. I think if you toss him in there with TJ, especially considering the fact that the Browns did not address their aging running back solution until the sixth round with James Davis. It may be easy to entice them into taking last years leading rusher. Is TJ a Manginii guy, I know that he did seemingly go after Farve instead of Mangini.
If we have to toss a late round pic in there to get it done, than so be it.
-
I havent been hearing anything about Braylon Edwards does anyone know anything about that, do we have a shot at getting him?
-
Plax would be a great pick up. Im sure he learned his lesson and would be very HUMBLE to play for us….for the first month. NO, seriously, GO GET HIM
-
Braylon is probably staying put. Apparently, the Cards are still interested in shopping Boldin, but that would be for 2010 picks, and maybe another player.
Plax is goinng to serve a few months in jail, even after a plea deal. Then he may be suspended for the entire season.
If the suspension is say, four games, then it would worthwhile. -
Hey TJ and Brad Smith for Braylon would let us still have earth, wind and Fire. Because they really like Woodhead.
So GreenE – Earth
Woodhead- Wind
Leon – FIRE -
i think this would be a big move for us just worried about his off the field issues. Does he have to go to jail?
-
Wow, this guy Shonn Green Looks like a beast !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrWZwH9VVJU
Speed AND power? Ill take it! He appears to not shy away from big hits and loves to lower the shoulder on defenders.
-
Show Me Links Peter.
-
I might have a problem with the character issues..
But I think a lot of it was actually brought on by the straightlace system of Coughlin -
As for Cap room, Tanny is a magician when it comes to that. Also, you create cap room when you get rid of Jones and Smith.
Plus, doesn’t the league allow some extra room for Rookie signings, of which we have a high first and then two second picks.
According to the guy over at http://www.nyjetscap.com, we have 12,313,722 in cap space. If I am reading it right, Jones counts as 2.5 million against the cap and Brad Smith counts for $653,250 against the cap. There is an extra 3 million to satisfy Leon, Sanchez (who it is believed will get somewhere around 30 mil guaranteed), Edwards and sign the two draft picks and any free agent draft picks.
Sidenote: VG is a 4,470,000 cap hit, I hope he produces this year.
-
Guys I heard the jets signed a Te andrew davie from arkansas he used to be the blocker for mcfadden and jones
-
Sign his ass ASAP!!!!!!
I don’t care about all this good guy/character crap. He is just a cry baby, not a rapist, murderer, drunk driver, etc. He just experienced a completely 1 in 1,000,000 accident. All these damn guys carry guns. He was just the unlucky jack ass that forgot to put the safety on before he went out for the night. If anyone thinks this couldn’t happen to anyone else, you should check out how many professional athletes carry. Most of them do and I don’t blame them.
This guy with the good D and running game, beat our arch rival and won a SB ring. Meanwhile, we all went insance when we beat them at Foxborough when they had 20 guys on the IR. Sign him tonight!
-
Since it is draft day and we are talking about P. Burress, I thought I would bring back some draft day memories. During the 2000 NFL Draft the NY Jets were linked to drafting P. Burress and the Steelers were linked to drafting C. Pennington. If I remember this correctly, the Steelers drafted Plaxico early and the NY Jets drafted Chad in order to flip him to the Steelers to get Plaxico. We did not need a QB at the time and Pittburgh did.
-
Why would we get rid of Thomas Jones ? We should def have 3 RB’s so that we can start Mark “The Matador” Sanchez ?!?!?! anyone ?
Anyway, we need to run, play D and throw to Keller. I don’t think Plax fits.
-
Seth
you are 100% correct. Even after the picks, there were supposedly trade discussions, but the Steelers wanted Chad and another pick for Plax.
-
pdubbs,
How does a 6’5 inch specimen who can win jump balls not fit? He’s one of the best in the game, regardless of what any of us think about him as a person. He’s physical, catches everything and (I don’t think anyone ever brings this point up) can BLOCK. All those long runs the Gmen had weren’t a fluke, they had receivers who got their hands on a defender and would block downfield.
If indeed something comes from this, it will be a great play for the Jets to make (assuming it’s not too expensive).
-
This would not be a bad idea if the signing incentives. For example, if he goes to jail the contract becomes null and void. I am not sure on he rules of this as far as cap space….just a thought
-
If there’s no jail time involved we should go after him I wanted him when he 1st came out b4 Pitt messed that dream up
-
*there are
-
Obvioulsy Plax can catch balls…prob. TD’s but I think we are going in the right direction why put this jackass on our team ? There are alot of teams that win and don’t have a huge reciever. Lets say this guy was 6’5 but wasn’t plaxico….. I would go for him.
-
David,
Its not just that he shot himself. It’s the fact that he can be selfish, a non-team player, will half ass- it on the field if he is not happy with his situation, and has also been known to take plays off. He’s the type of guy that signs a 4 year countract, and then after his first season wants a new contract. Jets have always been good at keeping the troubled players out of the organization, so im a little suprised by their interest.
-
i liked the way tanny did this.. win now team, not too many pieces really needed, not much later value, trade up and get what you want.. patriots r smart in their own respect but we managed this draft pretty well,, find potential replacement for jones and for favre under center,, get a versatile offensive lineman… TE from rutgers, carr from florida state,, n lets set the record straight here… while plaxico does have some attitude his teammates liked him and wanted him back and he was armed at a club.. irresponsible not registering the weapon and i heard about some car insurance fiasco too but the point is this aint much!! this isnt TO, every1 gives ochocinco and plax a bad rap in TOs ballpark,, they aint much… id trade a 4 or 5 for ochocinco and hell, if we have the cap room considering we only drafted two guys, one of which will command big picks, that could impact our cap number, we could even get both (even though that wont happen)
-
Очень интересно. Но чего-то не хватает. Может быть, стоит добавить каких-нибудь картинок или фото?
-
I have heard a rumor that the Jets have signed a TE (non-Draft related) but nothing credible has come up yet…
-
I say the Jets just pick up WR Greg Carr out of Florida St
-
Signing Plaxico would help our team in so many ways
1) it will open up the running game tremendously2) it will make the transition for Sanchez so much easier having a big target and deep threat to throw to.
3) It will force defenses to cover him more heavily, opening up our other recievers for 1-on-1 coverage. I like cotchery’s chances 1-on-1 with any number 2 corner in the league.
Signing burress will make the jets super bowl contenders in 2 years. It will completely solve the biggest whole on this team. I say we sign plax and all we’d have to do is wait for sanchez to transition into the star that i know he will be.
-
Also it would be nice to work out some tall undrafted recievers. Greg carr was mentioned, and i also like Aaron Kelly. For both of these guys, the production isnt quite there but the size and talent are. It wouldnt hurt to give them a look. Jaison Williams is talented but has problem with dropping passes. Darius Passmore from marshall was a guy who was regarded as a 3rd round talent until the offseason where he hurt his stock with a poor 40 and being 3 inches shorter than listed. He is officially 6’0
-
As long as he dosent shoot me ….I am all for it… Last I checked we still dont have a WR opposite Cotch!!
-
Just having a guy like plax on the field will make our other guys so much better. You wonder why guys like hixon and steve smith produce so much, it is because plaxico opens the offense up. Guys like stuckey and clowney would benefit greatly as well as cotchery.
-
I don’t understand why you are discussing about a player who is going to JAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Darius Passmore – he sounds like he is going to complain about a run first offense.
-
Any info guys on udfa? All I heard was a TE from arkansas
-
His name is Andrew Davies Hoz but like I said nothing has been said yet…
-
Alex,
You are misinterpreting the info on Jason’s site. While TJ’s cap hit for this year would be 2.5 mil if he stays, it will be 3 mil of dead money if he goes. TJ + 2.5 mil > a void and a 3 mil cap hit. From a business and football perspective, ridding ourselves of TJ makes no sense. Unless there are “irreconcilable differences”, TJ will be a Jet for one more year.
Elam’s departure will save about 1 mil, but Coleman will cost about 4-5 million in dead money minus whatever his cap cost would have been. My guess is that we will have less cap room after the Sanchez trade than before. I’m am sure however that Jason will have better info withing the next few days though at nyjetscap.com.
Hoz,
Please don’t use the term “take a shot on him” when referring to Plax. I know it is only an expression, but…
-
* Sorry, Andrew Davie is the TE’s name there is also another one, Robert Myers. There is also a punter T.J. Conley.
-
…
T.O. JUNIOR.
enough said.
What happened to Jets having class?
-
I would love to have Plax on the Jets, but the boy is going to jail and will also be facing at least a 1 year suspension.
-
when i think plax i think flashbacks to the opening scene of the movie ‘the last boy scout’ w/ bruce willis
-
Jets undrafted FA’s
DE Jamaal Westerman (Rutgers)
TE Andrew Davie (Arkansas)
DL Matt Kroul
P T.J. Conley (Idaho)
TE Robert Myers (Utah State)
DE Zach Potter (Nebraska) -
Tanny,
Could have left me with the wishful thinking a little bit longer. Unfortunately, you are right, I didn’t keep looking further down the site and did not even think about the Players we traded.
I will wait to see how Jason updates the list.
-
When I think og Plax, I think of super bowl ;)
anybody know a link about this??? to see if its true
-
For those who want to pick up every player that hits the market, our cap room is not great enough to accommodate you’re requests. Nor unlimited.
If we have patience and hold on to the space that we have, we will be able to fill most of our needs in a more economical way:
1. Teams that are in “cap hell” will need to cut valuable players in order to sign their draftees or replace injured ones. Players will be a little more desperate to get a contract done quickly the closer to opening day it gets.
2. June cuts always produce good values.
3. We will have time at training camp to assess our talent level at each position, not based on potential but actual on-field production and classroom information assimilation. Then specifically target our deficiencies or replace injured players without having to cut players solely to increase cap space.
We all agree that Tannenbaum is a cap genius, but there are limits as to how much you can gain through manipulation of contracts. My guess is that Tanny is at or near those limits.
-
Terrible fvKing draft.
I have been a fan for a long time and put up with a lot of BS, but this is absolute nonsense.
COLOSSAL RIP OFF. And all of you are eating it up. Disgusting.
-
You should all be ashamed with yourselves, as should Woody and Tannenbaum.
This reeks of unholiness.
-
OMG!!!!!!!! ITS TRUE….lol…. I JUST SAW IT ON SNY ABOUT THE JETS TALKING TO PLAX AGENT…
-
If Plaxico comes to the Jets, I will puke in my own throat.
-
i think with the addition of plax;s this could be good after all. i know are defense will stand up this year, but we need one more weapon on offense. having some one like that just takes so much pressure off everyone else. we could even go with sanchez as a starter then.
i didnt like the draft, but this would solve a lot of are needs.
heck its over, we dont know how it will work out for a while. no one knows how this season will work out, but at least brett it gone
-
The undrafted list dosent have a wr on it so its must be some truth behind plax
-
Kyle T… u should just stay shut… If we get Plax, he will give us an upgrade on our offense and also a #1 WR (which we need)
-
The only guy I have seen play is Potter and according to my boy who is a huge NU fan he thought Potter was going to get picked in the 3rd round. Thinks the kid is a legit NFL player
6’7 280….might be a nice fit for reps at DE.
The rest of the guys were not supposed to really get drafted except maybe Kroul.
The punter is a big kid with a big leg…maybe some comp for Hodges
-
I just threw up a little in my mouth…
-
Hoz is it true,, the jets did give a call to Plax agent… nothing else… thats why I saw on SNY
-
All you guys that dosent want plax will have a change of heart when he start catching TD’S in the red zone
-
hojo3… go throw up with Klye T in his house
-
I hope by this week, The jets start to get serious in getting Plax
-
Mike from Myspace;
Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg with dancing at a nightclub.
Do you really want this moron on our team? I don’t care how many double teams he draws.
-
Hutch confirms Jet interest in Plax but dosent thin anything will happen
-
Kyle T……
Yes
-
mike I heard the same thing the jets are interested and spoke to him and his agent
-
Kyle T….
YES!!!!!!! everybody deserves a second chance
-
Ok, well, all of you are ghey.
This team is going to be a disaster next year. Don’t believe me? Don’t worry, I’ll be back in 2010 to rub it in your faces.
-
Hoz
i know.. i saw it on SNY just minutes ago
-
I really dont need church going dudes on my squad.I need players that get my team to the Super Bowl.
If Plax can help then go get him. This guy is loved by his teammates in NY and they all wanted him back so its not like he is a locker room cancer.
-
I can see that Kyle T is not a true Jet fan
-
I loved him coming out, I thought we’d draft him, I would still LOVE to have him. He also would playy his rear off to stick it to the other team. YES PLEASE
-
Drew is right about that
-
Haha, I love these people who claim they are real fans because they lay down and take it from Woody in the behind.
Mike, do you have season tickets? Are you paying an extra $1500 to watch this team lose another 10 games?
-
Just look at Moss… he was like Plax but he change when he went to the patriots..
and plus.. i want a #1 WR just like the patriots have
-
We are not the Patriots, and Plaxico Burress certainly isn’t Randy Moss. Where did you get this analogy?
-
im just saying… i want a #1 WR
-
Yea, I want one too. That is why we should’ve drafted Michael Crabtree.
-
Where did Chris Baker from Hampton go?DL 6’2″ 326 pounds, ton of off the field issues, but intriguing prospect as an undrafted player.
-
yea but micheal is short
im tired of short WR’s
i want a tall WR like Plax
-
all eyes are on jones,, if he gets his act together and goes to work to play out the rest of his 20 mil contract unlikely we’d trade him,, very unlikely,, we wanna pound the ball from here on out… honestly, the best thing that could happen from here would be to try n sign plaxico now while he’s value is in the toiilet and if there’s any possible way, to a contract with lots of strings attached so that we can cut him if the legal stuff doesnt work out.. is that possible??
-
word alex, i want baker, he can back up jenkins and play some DE
-
We don’t need a 6’5 wide receiver! Plaxico Burress is a scumbag, who was despised by his superbowl caliber teammates. Often referred to as “not a team player.” This is not what a first year head coach needs, Rex Ryan or otherwise.
-
Before the Jets sign Plaxico there are some major questions first.
1. Is he going to jail? If so when and how long?
2. Does Goodall suspend him?
3. Is he in physical rehab? If so when will he be ready to return?
4. Will he be able to play this year? -
I think plax is going to be a loyal citizen because he know his next stunt will have him out of the league for good I hope these players learned anything from travis henry and pacman jones
-
Kyke what are you talking about The other G-Men loved Plax and he didnt shoot himself in the leg dancing the gun slipped and he tried to grab it.
-
You guys need to understand we traded Brett Ratliff, Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam, and a 2nd round pick (where an abundance of starter material was available) for a QB who is going to take at least two years to develop.
Meanwhile, we traded the rest of our picks for an overrated running back, who falls down every time he is scrapped. I have followed Greene, and he rarely breaks tackles. A huge part of his success was due to the great offensive line he had in front of him. Watch them highlights again boys, this guy is no Brandon Jacobs or Chris Wells. He occasionally takes it to a secondary defender, but that is his ceiling.
And, ironically, the Jets use their last pick on another developmental offensive lineman who will be cast away to the practice squad before eventually ending up playing for the Pats.
We have drafted like three Nate Garners in the last 4 years. What the Fvck!?
-
He is a Cancer. What is wrong with you all? You immediately forget what he has done tw his last 2 teams. He played great against the Packers in their SB run. He was fantastic for Eli. He is not a team player, and ruins chemistry. He is a less talented TO.
BUT….
Imagine, Moss, TO and Plax in the same division. I would say we have the worst of the 3 pre-madonnas, but it would make for interested talks.
-
Im still not ruling out Braylon Edwards who is just as good as plax.
-
Kyle,
Shonn was the Big 10 player (offensive) of the year. All american with over 1800 yards and 20 Tds. He is not overrated. He is the size we need to pound the ball. He could be a Brandon Jacobs, and with LW’s speed, we could own the running game.
Sanchez will not need 2 years. I live in CA and watch USC. He can start now over Clemens, and have a Matty Ice type season with our (hopeful) Defense and pound it first running attack. He will only be asked to not make mistakes, and can develop on the field while winning instead of on the sidelines while watching a losing team with KC throwing the long in complete pass like his fellow Oregonian Joey Harrington!
-
Braylon Edwards is not as good as Plax.
Look at the numbers KYLE.
Plax is better, and does not drop balls like Braylon.
-
Kyle T Shonn Greene is a third rounder for a reason and he does break tackles hes just slow and gets tackled by the ankles sometimes. Plus we have a good o-line.. you are making me look bad.
-
BTW Kyle,
The O lineman used to play for Callahan and knows the blocking schemes.
-
Kyle the Young Jet;
You’re wrong. “On Friday, November 28, 2008, Burress suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the right thigh in the New York City nightclub LQ when his Glock pistol, tucked in the waistband of his sweatpants, began sliding down his leg; apparently in reaching for the gun he inadvertently depressed the trigger, causing the gun to fire.” In other words, He shot himself in the leg.
Also, Burress was pulled over by Florida police on March 1, 2009 and ticketed for four separate moving violations: speeding, improper display of tags, improper lane change and for improper window tinting. Burress will have to appear in Broward County court to answer to the charges.
How about this one? “In January 2009, Burress was the defendant in a civil lawsuit brought against him by a Lebanon County, Pennsylvania car dealer, who claims that Burress was given a leased Chevrolet Avalanche in return for promises to appear at publicity events for the dealership. The dealer claims that Burress never returned the car and never attended any publicity events; the damaged car was eventually returned after being impounded by the New York Police Department. Burress acknowledged that he is responsible for some of the damage to the car, but asked a jury to determine the amount.[12] On January 15, 2009 the jury returned a verdict awarding only $1,700 to the dealer, who had asked for damages of up to $19,000.[13] According to the Associated Press, Burress has been sued at least nine times since he joined the NFL in 2000.[14]
He has a civil lawsuit pending against him in Broward County, Florida, where a woman claims that his $140,000 Mercedes-Benz collided with the back of her car. The suit, filed on December 8, 2008 claims that Burress was driving without car insurance at the time, as his insurance had expired three days previously and had not been renewed.”
Or, “On September 24, 2008, the team announced that Burress would be suspended for the game on October 5 for a violation of team rules.[9] He did not show up for work on a Monday and could not be reached by phone for two days. This is not the first time that Burress has been temporarily suspended by an NFL team—in May 2004, he was suspended by the Pittsburgh Steelers for failing to show up for a Monday team practice. On October 24 he was issued three fines totaling $45,000 for the following reasons:
1. $20,000 for post game comments regarding officiating — specifically, inappropriate comments on officiating.
2. $20,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct — specifically, verbal abuse of the head linesman.
3. $5,000 for throwing the ball in the stands.” -
Ok Braylon had one season where he dropped alot of balls..whats your point we still NEED Braylon Edwards.
-
Kyle, with the correct opinion
You are absolutely correct. I think he will be another FB type with quicker speed ie: Jerome Bettis, BRandon Jacobs, Leron Mclean (Rex is familiar with him), Guys who can pound the ball and run for some yards.
The 1st two names are hard to be compared to, but watch the highlights, not to fast, but pound it on 1st and 2nd and watch Leon find the wholes on a tired D.
IE: BRandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward.
-
CA Kid;
Are you high? The kid doesn’t know our blocking schemes, he was just drafted today. And please don’t refer to Matt Ryan as “Matty Ice.”
-
We do not need an overpaid receiver that drops a lot of balls Kyle.
That is my point.
I like our WR core right now, but if we get Plax for nothing and he plays effectively then great. If not, I am not a fan pf Braylon. Overrated. If we go for an expensive WR, lets get Boldin.
Trade TJ and a 2010 2nd for Boldin
Or…
Trade TJ for Miles Austin and a 2010 3rd rounder. Jerry will make that deal tomorrow.

HRM….Dennis Rodman was the biggest pain in the ass in the history of the NBA…did that stop Michael Jordan from winning titles? No. He knew he needed him to put the team over the top time and time again, so he overlooked it. The Giants put up with his crap, because they knew they needed him to put them over the top and they were right. After he helped them win ring, he became expendable. Now, more than ever he probably thinks he’s above the league, but his teammates all wanted him back. Why? Because w/o him, they aren’t winning another Super Bowl. At the end of the day, that’s what it is all about….winning a Super Bowl.
-
I hope you guys are right, but I think you are high off the draft. Take a day or two, then come talk to me.
-
What are you talking about I said the Gun Slipped and he grabbed it and it shot him…
“shoot himself in the leg dancing the gun slipped and he tried to grab it.”
Ok my bad for leaving out “and shot him” but I thought it was already established that he shot himself.
You said he was dancing and he shot himself. -
Kyle T
Don’t get over excited. He played for Callahan at Nebraska, so yes he knows the schemes and style as Callahan is our Oline coach.
Get it?
Matty Ice would be exactly what we want Sanchez to be. Cool, collected 22 year old, who lets the game come to him,a nd works with his running game and defense. Another great example was Joe Flacco.
You are entitled to your opinion, but just wrong in mine,
-
David I;
Umm, correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure the “Michael Jordan” of the NFL is on the Patriots…Or Colts…And he’s white.
-
David,
Dennis Rodman won 1 title with the Bulls. MJ won 6. Whats teh point? They didnt need him, he was fortunate to win with them.
-
BTW Kyle,
No I am not high, I am a bit to old and mature to smoke anything, and if we are talking legitimate talk as a Jet fan, then lets do that. If not, then do not respond. I never insulted you, so please show the same respect.
-
His name is Matt Ryan.
And I hope you are right. But TJ hasn’t shown up yet, and Leon is not an every down player. We are in the toughest division in the NFL. We are going to need to rely on our QB. I don’t care what Ryan tells the media. If we were going to be a great run-first team, we wouldn’t have traded up for Sanchez in the first place.
He does not know the schemes, Callahan isn’t using the same playbook he was using in Nebraska. If he were, we’d be less effective.
-
Alex,
I didn’t mean to spread rain over your parade, just perspective.
So I will give you a thought to change your demeanor.
In the winter of 2006 Tanny took over a team in shambles from Bradway; gasping for cap space and filled with old and over-priced players or those that didn’t fit the new system. Entering his fourth training camp he has remade this team with young talented players and mostly solid, middle-aged veterans with several useful years and leadership qualities left(Jenks, Scott, Faneca, Pace, etc.).
There are only 6 players from that original team, including a long snapper and arguably our weakest defensive starter (please make him disappear!), yet it would be hard to find a sane fan who could deny that this team is light years ahead of the one he inherited.
When things look dark (remember that we had the worst cap space and an impossible battle ahead just a few months back), Tanny has pulled a rabbit out of his hat — or a litter.
We are entering training camp with an uprecedentedly solid management team, a coach and new acquisition who exude confidence that seems to be highly contagious, a new work environment that seems to be welcome by all players, and loads of talent.
I entered draft day believing that what we needed was not any one impact player, but loads of depth. The draft couldn’t have gone any more counterintuitive to those beliefs. Yet I remain optimistic with deference to their recent success at following a solid plan and boldly attacking it.
Sit back, relax and don’t blink or you’ll miss the next trick.
And never doubt the power of a little magic.
-
One last thought….if anyone looks at tomorrow’s grades, the Pats will be graded mostly w/A’s. However, they are every year. The “pundants” get all lathered up because they get lots of picks. The reality is, they hit a home run with Mayo last year, but in the past few drafts, they probably picked 15 guys, of which only 2 became starters and the dumb ass media still credits the Pats as a perfect example of building through the draft, just because they caught lightening in the bottle with Brady in the 6th. Meanhwile, they have had more contributions from Free Agents, then any other team in the league. I hate the double standard!!!!!!!
-
Fighting off everyone it appears Kyle T….Not sure where you got your scumbag info on Plax. The team loved him and most of his teammates wanted him back….
It probably wont happen but Rex is the type of coach that could maybe get to Plax. He is a players coach but has the respect of his players. If those animals from the Ravens defense respected him I am sure Plax would listen
-
Has anyone seen Clauson? This guy is certifiable!!!!
-
Drew, anyone who makes millions of dollars a year, and abuses his standing and influence in society by bring a loaded gun into a nightclub doesn’t deserve to play in the NFL.
The NFL needs to be more strict, as does every level of institution. We need to hold people responsible, and there needs to be consequence. Otherwise, anybody will piss on anything.
Plaxico has had plenty of chances, it’s time we stop paying for him to live in luxury.
-
WO Buddy Boldin wants way more that Braylon and Braylon is way better than Boldin when he is playing at his best. Plus Braylon is that Tall Deep threat receiver everyone wants and hes making 4.55 million with one year left on his contract.
Also you saying you want to trade tj and a pick for Anquan shows how delusional you are.
-
Understood Kyle and I respect your opinion……but I still want the guy catching TD’s passes from my QB.
-
TannyVision,
At the end of the day the deal will probably end up being a push capwise. The Jets shed about 6.5 million of “active” cap dollars and replaced it with 930K of “active” cap dollars and about 4.4 million in dead cap space. So for the next few weeks we picked up about 1.25 million in cap space.
Sanchez is likely going to have close to a 3 million cap hit this year, though I have to admit I have no idea what effect the no cap in 2010 will have on the contracts so it could be more. The number 17 pick in the draft likely would have cost us about 1.45 million in cap room and the 2nd rounder around 620K . Assuming an UDFA replaces the 2nd rounder they will carry a cap hit of 310K. Add it all up and it seems as if Tannenbaum basically came up with a cap wash for the 2009 season. 2010 and beyond is a different story, however, and if Sanchez isnt the real deal, he and Gholston will probably put the Jets back into a spot we have not seen since the dark days of the mid 90s.
-
Kyle T,
There was not a lot of talent in this draft. Most of the analysts agree that this was a poor draft in terms of talent. While I agree that this overall draft strategy is not the best suited philosophy for building a franchise, this year presented a bit of a different situation. If you don’t think much of the draft, you might as well trade up and get the few gems you believe are worth picks.
I believe Sanchez will be the best QB out of this class, part of my reason is cause Stafford is stuck on the Lions. Also Sanchez looked good this year. I was hoping from day one that we would get him. I did not think we would climb up to five, but it is what it is. Sorry CA Jet Fan, but I think it would be best if he sat this year. We should build up Clemens trade value and let Snachez get adjusted. There is no earthly way that he will sit two years. He will be the QB on opening day.
As for Shonn Greene, I have been saying this over and over on this site. We have a great line. Greene will succeed in this line, hell I thought Jennings would succeed in this line. I guess the Jets saw something in Greene. I would have waited and taken Jennings and kept the picks. I like the addition of Greene. I do not believe e is overated, but I do agree with you that we paid to much to draft him, especially when you look at the backs that went undrafted this year. We could have taken a Jennings, a Ian Johnso, a Jermiah Johnson, not to mention a host of other running backs and still had our 4 and 7 to pick up a TE, DL or OL. Some of the undrafted players are interesting, so hopefully we will be able to compensate with that.
Also, I still side with those of use who believe we could improve by trading TJ, expecially if he keeps holding out. Just pick up Jermiah Johnson and few other backs to run behind this line committee style.
-
http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/blog/
According to Boland the Jets were interested before the draft but it sounds like it was only mild interest- and we just signed a DE from Rutgers for those of you into rookie FA
-
Man, if the Jets sign Sanchez for cheap, there will be so many racial jokes made.
I don’t want Plaxico, we should just pass the ball to Dustin Keller more and maybe trade TJ for Braylon Edwards (who is going to end up on the block, why else did Eric draft two WR’s in the 2nd round?)
-
This would be dumb with a capital D. But hey guys, there’s some great round 8ers out there. Go get ‘em Jets. Big WRs, Darnell Ellerbe, PJ Hill, Ryan Purvis, Greg Isdaner. make it happen captain.
-
Kory Sheets…
-
wow, you guys really want to bring a “wannabe gangster” into the jets just to win games?
have jets fan loss their integrity???
class > superbowl
-
Yeah david the kid look freak nasty……….I hope he plays like he looks
-
IRA, I hoped you’re not one of those people who vouched for Matt Jones- Multiple drug offender.
-
Its been forty years! I want a Superbowl! I live in Texas. The Cowboys had a bunch of drama during their last superbowl run. There fans still cherish their last dynasty.
Just pointing it out. I am for integrity/class and against signing Plax.
-
TOJUNIOR, you’re pushing it. Stop right there. Wannabe gangster ? Far from it. You’re just looking for something to pick at.
-
Kory Sheets signed with SF
-
I respect everyones opinions here but I think we are a couple pieces away from being special and plaxico is 1 of them.
-
Agreed Hoz
-
If by special you be 2-14, then yea, you are right on board with Matt Millen and Woody Johnson.
-
Integrity/Class….you’re acting like the deliberately went there to shoot up the place like Carnegie Deli. Not taking the facts for what they are shows lack of class/integrity.
-
Hey, L’Sean, you are right. He is not a wannabe gangsta, he is one.
-
L’Sean, a little piece of wisdom for you,
“If nobody carried guns, nobody would need guns.”
-
I am not sure again where your getting yout facts from Kyle… I assume youre attempting to be funny but what does Millen and the Lions have to do with our owner??
We have a good franchise brother….
Our owner has spent money and done everything a fan would want with on the field issues to help this team compete for the playoffs and SB…. He has had good years since he took over.
Millen was a disater and was given cotrol when he proved nothing….
-
Problem with your logic Kyle…..people carry guns….. and I am sure there are alot more players like Plax that carry a gun than do not….
He just happen to shoot his dumb ass…
-
Yea a couple of pieces One is a excellent pass rusher and a deep threat.
Braylon or Plaxico
and developing Gholston. -
Ideally sound, yet people are always going to insert their will. Constructively or not.
-
I am paying $1500 extra a year for a team that went 9-7 last season and made a ridiculously ignorant decision by trading for Favre. I was against it from day one.
Now, I get to come home from a hard weekend at work to hear that the GM of my team has traded away all of our draft picks for two players whom are going to take years to develop in a draft deeper than Woody Johnson’s pockets!?
And now, we are SO desperate we are considering signing Plaxico Burress? You should be ashamed of yourself Drew.
-
You guys, especially Drew, are so intellectually sound that you are blowing my mind…completely away…
-
Can we stop with racial comments and racial references to sanchez? Its really immature, we should really have board mods on here deletin these comments.. I know it aint everybody and its not a lot but any reference to race doesn’t belong on this blog…
-
Jason,
Thanks for the update regarding the weekends cap hit.
I wouldn’t have thought you’d have the time to digest all that so soon. And props to you for all your work you’ve done leading up to the draft.
Based on the numbers on your futures page, I assume that Woody and BT (hallelujah) along with TJ, Pouha and maybe Ellis will be gone and Lito will have to renogotiate to remain. Have hope for Gholston still but QB’s, especially one’s with light resumes, are always a major gamble. I’ll hope for the best.
From a purely bussiness standpoint, I think Tannenbaum is the shrewdest gm we have ever had. I find it hard to imagine that he would allow that dark a scenario to occur. however, I respect your opinion too. Let’s hope it’s never tested!
-
I don’t know…it appeared that any team wasn’t bum rushing for the receivers in the draft.
-
Kyle T, give me your tickets ill take them… I don’t understand it seema like u hate everything about the jets so wat makes u a fan.. The only reason ur giing us is cuz u work and pay for season tickets??
-
As weird as it might seem Kyle…. I am not ashamed at all.
I dont judge these athletes. They can do whatever they want. There job is to entertain me. We not talking about murderers here….Your talking about knuckleheads you wouldnt be invited to my house for dinner…..but if they want to run a 4.4 and score TDs to make me happy 3 hours on a Sunday ….then great!!
Good Luck with your night and the rest of your battles with my fellow Jet fans
-
SIGN PLAXICO!
Oh boo hoo, the guy’s a bit of an idiot. Wahhh wahhh, he’s kinda selfish. Well, guess what… WHO CARES!! He’s talented. The Jets need size and speed at WR. Assuming no jail time, signing Plax fits the bill to a tee.
The Jets are loaded with high character guys. One bad apple is not the end of the world.
-
That is fine Drew, but the NFL goes beyond entertainment. You might be a simple-minded middle-aged white guy with a beer gut, but young kids look up to these players. When these guy are given the opportunity to work for half the year, and make millions of dollars in the process, they need to be held to a higher standard in society.
They shouldn’t be allowed to hit their wives, carry guns around in public, cuss off fans, skip workouts, and murder people. We should be sending a message of moral dignity to the next generation.
But if you would rather exist in your shell, that’s fine too.
-
Ed L,
Race is funny. People enjoy creating barriers, why not make fun of them?
-
Looks like we have here the clash of titans, predicted and inevitable. Can’t condemn everybody, can’t spare everybody. interestingly, the history of this sport, wealth, etc. the enterprise are virtually built on these players.
-
Way off on your judgement of me ….but I guess it makes your reply funnier…
29 white guy….dont drink beer and no gut my friend…
have a 2 year old son but Im not worried about plaxio raising him….thats why he has a father. If you cant see the difference then I feel bad for you…….maybe you need your athletes to help you raised your kids. The shell I live in is controled by me and unless it involves my family or loves ones I dont give a crap.
I didnt say it was right if they do the things you speak of…. i just dont care.
In saying that if Plax signes with us there will be 75,000 simple minded idiots just like me cheering him with every reception.
You should hope this dosent happen…it would suck to be you with your season tickets
-
To david i,
who believes that Plaxico was “the unlucky jack ass that forgot to put the safety on before he went out for the night. ” … 100% BULL!
YOu couldn’t be further from the truth. You are obviously confused between the definition of unlucky, and incredibly stupid. He’s a moron! Not putting on the safety when your in a crowded place in criminally reckless, not forgetful.
He was lucky he didn’t shoot himself in the balls. Moreso, that nobody else was injured by his “unlucky” actions.
His crime is very serious and don’t dismiss it’s possible consequesces so easily. If he is truly repentant after spending significant time meditating on his actions while behind bars, let him then go job hunting.
-
The thing is plaxico is the only realistic option budget wise as boldin and edwards will be a hard task fitting under the cap once sanchez is signed with that being said we still have other players that we. Have to add so plax make since in a buisness stand point.
-
Where is all this race stuff coming from?
-
Mike Tannenbaum on Mike Francesa’s Sunday night sports show, Mike’d Up” confirmed that he has spoken to Drew Rosenhaus, Plax’s agent, and termed those talks very preliminary. Plax has a June 15 court date.
-
I think you miss the point entirely with regard to class and integrity. He was trusted to be an integral part the team and given a major contract.
You do not carry a gun to the bar/club (a felony in and of itself) under any circumstances. If you do not feel safe going to that place without a gun, then do not go to that place. Stop lowering the standards for athletes. They’re getting paid all that money and the team is relying on you, you should act responsibly. So yes, it is an issue of class/integrity.
Its not like they went there to shoot up the place… Are you kidding me. He shouldn’t have been strapped in the first place.
Hey Tanny,
Does this mean that we can afford to trade TJ, Brad Smith, and some other necessary cap casualty for Braylon Edwards.
-
Just to put it out there…the backup to Boldin consistently shined in his absence. Hope he’s no Bryant Johnson when he was in Ariz. When he left…you saw the result. Well, he was a overvalued first round pick anyway.
-
Sporting news gave us a B- for our draft grade……….not bad for 3 players and lito sheppard
-
Braylon Edwards…all Im Saying.
-
Fair enough.. Alex. You’re right. But please don’t call a him a gangster when “you” really have not seen one. Competing in college (going to college) is not long life goal of a gangster… Then just be consistent with every player. I don’t want to hear this one day then the other. I’ll remember this.
-
RB note:
On NFL.com it shows that:
Rashad Jennings and Jeremiah Johnson still have not been drafted. I know we got green already, but they we are going to run the ball, we need to take one of these two guys (Jennings preferably) to add into the mix.Aelx can u tell me how that above statement makes sense.. we have thomas jones, leon washington and green.. so we are gonna use 4 rb’s for what?, and pay sanchez around 35 mil guarnteed to just hand the ball off.?
-
Plax is a no brainer
-
Dirty Sanchez is a shot of Tequila with Kalua float.
-
sadfan, LOVE the double meaning, whether it was intentional or not.
-
Kindly explain this….I spend so much time analyzing Physics (Mathematics) textbooks. I can’t afford to get liquored up.
-
Alex,
That would be a better question for Jason or Bent.
TJ would cost you 3 mil plus 310,000 (minumum salary) for a replacement, but give 2.5 mil cap space
-810,000 in cap spaceSmith about 250,000 savings I’m guessing
Jason says cap room around 12.5 mil
Subtract the 3 rookie salaries, Edwards’salary, a fund for emergency replacements, possible LW signing, possible incentive clauses that may kick in during the season (or something like that) and some june cut tasty morsels — and there is your answer.
I like to wait and see what falls from the tree personally, unless they are blown away by the deal.
Florio had a link to a site that listed current salary cap room for each team (taken with a grain of salt). I found the link to Florio on this site a few days ago. Check the roster of those clubs that are tight and start dreaming. something good might just come to those that wait.
-
Alex,
completely agree with your previous point. Just stay away is good advise.
-
Le’Sean
I do not believe I am the one who called him a Gangster.
However, if I do say something hypocritical, which I will admit can happen, please feel free to remind me. I too get can get caught up when I want a Player for my team. One example in this very blog today was with the DL Baker who was kicked off the Penn State team. He is undrafted and will be an inexpensive yet versatile back up. However, he has had some criminal charges which I admit, I do not know much about. Part of me wants to justify this decision by stating that he is a young player, brand new the league, who should be given the chance to put this behind him and he will not represent that same investment amount. But I could also rightfully be called out for it.
Sanfan,
We are going to be run first offense and running back by committee is being used more commonly now. Just because we pick them up does not mean we automatically have them when we start the season. I think there is potential there and they will be relatively inexpensive (b/c they are undrafted agents.) If these players can come in and contribute it it may gives us the ability to trade a possible disgruntled Jones and someone else in a package for a wide receiver.
-
I think the jets will make 1 more big splash this off season
-
forget plex, trade thomas [show me the money] jones and next years #2 for braylon edwards.
-
I agree, package TJ and Brad Smith and send to Cleveland for Braylon
-
to Le’Sean Roberts,
he carried a live loaded gun into a public area. how can you not call that not having class? that’s just straight up wannabe gangster right there.
-
and the point is, he’s not REAL gangster, he just has a high school mentality in wanting to be “THE MAN” and feel powerful, hence the “wannabe” gangster tag.
-
you want a guy who took a loaded gun into a public place to be a role model for your kids??? i definitely dont. i dont want my kids cheering for this guy.
-
I like Sanchez and Greene, but we’re going nowhere this year without getting a burner WR somewhere, somehow. Let’s remember that Farve couldn’t get us to the playoffs last year and we still had Coles. 33 WR’s were drafted (nfl.com) and a few signed as FA’s and we signed zip. Mike T. better get Edwards, Boldin or someone in here ASAP. No matter how many RBs you have, you can’t beat the better teams w/o a deep threat. TJ will be back to 0 TDs. See Giants last year w/o Plax. Smith is a good ST’er, but a workout wonder as a WR. DC and Stuckey have promise but who knows? Even if they do develop, what about injuries? Edwards was a #3 overall and will be a FA in 2010. I say see what the Browns will take for him, get him and we’ll be set for years to come.
-
Plax deserves another chance and we should give it to him. He is a game changer when his head is right
-
To Eddie.
Another chance maybe but hopefully not in NY. Do you have kids? if you do, do you want your kids to root for a guy who took a live loaded gun into a public place?
even if he takes us to the superbowl, i would hate it e even more, cause to my kids, it would make him a hero.
-
does anyone know if the jets are pursuing boldin or edwards?! or anyone talented at the wr position!?! cotchery is good but not a deep threat. the rest are talented but not mature
-
hey laguardia, hate to break it to u, but our newest quarterback is an accused rapist. The fact is we need plaxico. He is the final piece of the puzzle. If we want to be a perrenial playoff team we’re going to need a number 1 reciever to spread the defense. We wont be able to run our 1 dimensonal offense against 9 man fronts. Someone is going to have to demand attention away from our run game for it to be effective.
-
wow, how did you go from a DISMISSED sexual misconduct charge to an accused rapist??? lol, people are funny.
-

He helped a young Eli very well. His skill set is a good fit for our O as well, could be interesting. Legit or no stone unturned?
