    I absolutely agree that I would prefer an updated 80’s/90’s uniform. We should petition for it and send it to Woody Johnson, I don’t think many Jets fans really like the Titans throwbacks. Just seems like a different team out there.

    I find it great how confusing it’s going to be with us wearing uniforms that say the Titans on them on a weekend that we play the Tennessee Titans. Marketing Genious. The only thing that could make that game more horrible is if they get Tony Kornheiser to commentate. Can’t wait to hear how many Sanchez to Favre comparisons come out of his mouth this year.

    I wish these stupid things would go away all together. It’s cool and all when the Chargers wear the powder blue, but every time I see a picture of one of our stars wearing these horrible things I want to puke.

    This teams uni’s are long overdue for modernization. The one’s can be tolerated, but I would love to see them transformed into something special. The old Titans uni’s are actually refreshing to see and I would rather they wear them opposed their regular uni.

    Lastly, since you brought it up, they are not called Gang Green for the color of their uniforms, they are called Gang Green because they were sooooooooooo terrible way back when and like idiots, the media and the fans perpetuate the negative nickname. It is actually one of, if not the worst nicknames in all of sports.

    I’d love to see the 30th anniversary (I think–1993-ish?) uniforms that Boomer Esiason wore with the old style logo in white with an all green helmet. The jersey was similar to the old uniform, but had more green in certain places and the shoulder stripes weren’t as wide as they are today.     I am curious about the white Titans unis. I’m only 33, so I am not old enough to remember the white uniform. I really don’t think the Titans throwbacks are as bad as everyone says they are (Philly’s throwbacks are 100 times worse and noone complains about them), but at the same time, they celebrate a team that didn’t win very much and only really lasted a couple of seasons.

    I’d rather throwback to the 1986 jerseys because at least we were good then and it is a time frame most Jets fans remember. Since our current uni is actually a retro uni, I see why they went further back to the Titans uniform.

    Namath never wore the Titans uniform. They were the Jets when he was signed. But Don Maynard did wear the uniform.

    I swear the league should restrict the number of throwbacks/alternate Unis to:

    The Chargers and their Baby Blue Unis
    The G-Men and their red alternates (just barely acceptable)
    Steelers Throwbacks
    I’m probably forgetting a few other good ones but seriously, throwbacks tend to suck, especially the ones we have which are the most hideous things ever.

    Oh, and if the Eagles tie another game they should be forced to don the Swedish National Football team unis as a punishment since they’re hideous.

    Actually, the Jets colors are green and white because either Sonny Werblin or Harry Wismers’ birthday was on St. Pattys Day……nothing to do wih Hess. Compared to some of the other teams throwback (Steelers, Eagles, Lions), Jets/Titans are kida cool. LOVE the current unis cause I go back to the 60’s with the Jets. Hope they never change except to bring back the gray facemask. HATED THE 80’s uniforms and hope I never see them again.

    I do remember the uniform. I saw my game 1 v. the Boston Patriots on 10/1//61. NY won 37-30 on a TD pass – Durow to Maynard. The uniform was ugly then and it’s ugly now. The team only lasted 3 years and very few people showed up at the Polo Grounds to see them. The Titans of NY never had a winning record. The uniforms now are all about marketing. It’s certainly not about celebrating a successful history.

The Jets already wear a modified version of the 1968 Jets, so the only option for throwbacks that doesn’t bring back memories of the dark years is the NY Titans uniforms.     I think the franchise turned the page with Parcells and I don’t like looking back at the 80s/early 90s uniforms.

    The current uniform is a throwback to the team’s greatest success, no offense to Klecko or Gastineau.

    When they’re in all white, I immediately think of Namath.

    The Jets franchise has done 2 historical things. First, with Joe Namath and the Super Bowl III win, it kick-started the NFL as THE television sport. Second, the “New York Sack Exchange” forced the NFL to make a “sack” an official statistic. I know the 80s Sack Exchange teams didn’t win a Super Bowl, but they revolutionized the game by making a defensive play a fan favorite. That’s something to commemorate.

    I have been talking about this for a long time now. I would love for them to bring back the 80s-90s jerseys. Those are my favorite jerseys.I wouldn’t be opposed to them wearing those permanently. If not, then at least have them wear those instead of the Titans for the three games. I don’t like those.

    The purpose of the Titans throwback is definitely money driven. However it is not the commemoration of a by-gone team that was a financial and PR disaster, but rather a signal for all fans to Remember the AFL!
    The Jets were originally the Titans of NY and the one of first AFL franchises. Without the AFL, the NFL would not be what it is today. If not for the AFL, we wouldn’t be celebrating the Super Bowl.
    Think about that young fans.

    First of all the Jets wore green because that was Leon’s wife Ethel’s favorite color – Just like Amerada Hess uses. My dad worked for Leon at the time and I went with him as a very young boy to the polo grounds to see the Titans play.
    Any truth to the rumor that the Jets have petitioned the NFL (1 year early as required) to tweek the uniform for the 2010 season (new stadium look). A 78-98 alternate uni would be fitting for one game.

    The Jets are green and white because Sonny Werblin was born on St. Patrick’s Day. He was the principal owner after he bought the team out of bankruptcy before the 1963 season, he changed the team name from Titans to Jets (because it sounded modern and rhymed with “Mets” because they were going to share that “state of the art” facility, Shea Stadium in 1964) and personally chose the team colors. Leon was one of the money men backing Werblin, but Werblin was the front man and, as rich as Leon became, the other money men weren’t exactly poor. They were all silent owners and I seem to recall that when the money men took over in 1968, Leon wasn’t the front man and didn’t take control until the mid-70s.

    The idea of throwback is to highlight an earlier point in the history of the team..their origins if you like…
    The titans, while not a winning team, nor a very popular, were still the origin of the New York Jets that we all known and love. While the colors are not green and white…they still are what the Jets were…

    Now…history on the Green and white…I have seen it mentioned about the Jets being green and white because of Hess….that is spot on.

    The Jets were called the Jets, because they were playing at Shea Stadium…and the Jets from Laguardia flew over every game.. As far as being green and white, when Werblin bought the team..it is not much remembered that his partner was Leon Hess…and the jerseys reflect that. Look at the original jerseys…the green is much lighter than it is now…exactly the same green as in every damned Hess station.

    Remember boys and girls…It is Leon Hess that took the Jets out of new york..where they belong…so i wouldn’t be all that married to green and white.

    But green and white is what we have…so we bleed it…

    Now, to those who long for the dismal jerseys of the 80’s/90’s…this was a time period where, besides moments of success..like when they almost made it to the superbowl…if not for a purposely rain soaked field in Florida…was mostly a bust, where the Jets lost focus, lost their identity. Part of the reason? those uniforms. Look closely at those jerseys that many people long for…look familar? Change the double green stripes on the sleves, outlined in black, or plain green as they originally were…to a royal blue color..either outlined in black, or plain blue…and change the number color to blue as well..what do you have? They are the Dallas Cowboys jerseys…just color changed and put on the Jets.

    I for one was estatic when Parcells changed the jerseys back to a traditional look. Yes, they are somewhat of a throwback to the early Jets jerseys…but they are more the evolution of what they shoud have been all along, without the Dallas Jets shoved in the middle.

    Bottom line…I like the current Jets Jerseys….and still have a fondness for the white shirts…because of superbowl III. As joe namath said…the good guys always wear white… But having said that, I do like the “titans” jerseys as well…and really look forward to the white version. I know I will get one as soon as they become available…I just wish they would let you order one with “maynard” on the back and his old #13…(yeah, I’m old)
