Matt Slauson Excited to Play in New York
New Jets Guard Matt Slauson spoke to a reporter this week about his excitement to play for the Jets and for his old coach, Bill Callahan.
“I got drafted to a team that actually has a need (at guard),” Slauson said. “I’m going to get a shot at playing and I’m going to make the most of this opportunity.”
Crazy day. The kind of crazy day that at one point found Slauson having a brief conversation with his former Husker head coach, Bill Callahan.
Now an offensive line and associate head coach for the Jets, Callahan spoke briefly with Slauson, saying he was glad to work with him again.
“It is going to be great. I have said over and over again, Coach Callahan is the best offensive line coach in the country,” said Slauson, the 193rd pick overall. “And if it wasn’t him taking a shot in the dark on me four years ago, then I wouldn’t be where I am today.
“I’d be lucky to make it on any college team, but it was because of him that I was able to come to Nebraska. I thank him then and I thank him again, because this is awesome.”
Oh Slauson will get a shot at playing this year … during practice and in preseason games. Unless someone gets injured, it will be very hard for Slauson on unseat Alan Faneca and Brandon Moore at the Guard spots. He’s definitely a player who could do well at Guard, but he’s a project, for sure.
We’ll assume that Slauson’s comments from last fall when he said that he felt he was a “side of beef” and that he was “used and abused” while playing for Callahan are water under the bridge at this point then …

Hmm, I wonder how much input callhan had into this draft pic.
maybe he is confused and doesnt know our roster. we certainly dont have a need at guard. we still have to pay more than $25 million guaranteed money to faneca and moore through 2012.
we had a need at depth, if you count that as a position
I have a nagging feeling this guy is going to be a Dumbass.
Someone has to protect Erik Ainge.
Road grater on goal line!
By the way, Charles Spencer, backup offensive tackle for the Jags and 2006 3rd round pick of the Texans was released.

This guy could create depth at offensive tackle.
As a follow up, sounds like the guy has had weight issues which has held him back in the league. So, if he was to be signed, a conditioning clause/bonus in his contract could help to motivate him. He has Damien Woody size and can also play guard.
Ilan, I think that makes a lot of sense (he was listed at 340 as a sophomore, but made weight at 315 for the combine). Bear in mind that any weight related incentives for 2009 will effectively count against the cap in 2009 (ie the Jets will have to set aside enough cap room to pay them). even if they are “not likely to be earned”. (Under the old rules, they could defer the cap charge into the following season and use that additional space to boost their offer to the higher profile rookies).
A lot of teams are going to struggle with the rookie cap this year. I hope the Jets don’t. Get all three signed and it could be a solid competitive advantage over some teams.
A need at backup guard is a need at guard……….
Slauson looks to be a “football” guy and he has the size and experience to be a possible upgrade for us. Welcome abord Mr. Slauson, let the pounding begin!
i heard he great for the run so we will see.
Glad to hear it glad to have him.
Sure there is a need at guard. Faneca is getting up there in years and Moore is by far the weakest link. All it takes is one injury and this kid could be on the field. I like his comments. Seems like he has an attitude about him. I think you need to have an edge to you if you are going to do well in the league. I just hope it isn’t too much and he focusses on getting better on the field
whatever became of jacob bender
You can never have too much depth on the OL. People get hurt and if you don’t have talent behind the starters, the team will suffer. I hope the guy succeeds. It would be great for a project linemen to finally work out.
Johnl….I was real hopeful for the Bender man too.
I think he now has a job in the kitchen with the McDonalds corporation, LOL.
This guy has to be play he was a 1st/2nd round draft pick – like he should have been – but no, we had to try to win the admiration of the media instead of football games
Does the kid have a nickname? How about “Slausages”. Like the doggy treat.
did a little research i think bender plays for san fran now.

Go Matt!!
Ya this guy is a beast. watch him at NEB and you will see he is the run blocker you want. and talk about attitude, he paints his face up with black spikes going down from his eyes and looks really freaky.
I hope this guy turns out to be a steal, but seriously who cares about how he paints his face? If he’s a player I can see it being ok, but if he sucks and wears make up it just makes him a bigger douche…
i went to high school with matt and he has a lot of heart he will be an assett to any team he is on and he will give 110% i have read some of the comments and seriously watch him play before ripping on him! He will prove to you that he is willing to work hard and play hard. My boyfriend and I are looking forward to this season and I am hoping i get to see matt play!
I agree with ashley, I also know Matt and helped coach him in high school. He is one of the hardest working and most competative people I have ever coached. No matter what, Matt always had a great attitude and a leaders mentality. Something you wouldn’t get with some of the premadonas in football these days. Matt leads by example and doesn’t have to talk a good game, he just goes out there and does it. I was hoping he would have been picked up by my Seahawks, but it looks like I will be crossing over and rooting for the Jet’s now in the AFC instead of the Raiders. Bottom line the Jets are lucky to have Slauson and even if the fans don’t see it now in time they will. Good luck this season Jets and and hopefully you guys can do what Farve couldn’t last season.
