Bob Glauber does a great job writing an in-depth look at how the whole release of Brett Favre played out for the Jets. Here’s a sample:

… why not retain Favre’s rights, on the off chance that if he did decide to return, they could work out a trade? Because the Jets felt internally that a trade was not feasible. If Favre did want to come back, he would almost certainly want to play for the Vikings. But a trade to Minnesota would have been prohibitive; terms of Favre’s trade from the Packers to the Jets stipulated that the Jets would owe Green Bay three first-round picks if he were traded to an NFC North competitor. The Jets knew that Favre would almost certainly be unwilling to accept a trade to a non-NFC North team, so holding his rights would have been futile.

The whole article is worth reading, but you’ll see that this was the best move the Jets could make without putting themselves into a worse situation later. They got their guy in Sanchez, and now they can let it go from there.

I stand corrected. I thought we should have made him flinch first, but at the end of the day we would have lost. Hope this kid is good. And some credit to Tanny. Well done.

3 first round picks? That is an insane deal GB made (i assume it was their idea).

See you later Brett. I never thought you coming here was a good idea anyway. Did it even work as a PSL stunt?
