Hutch has a great article this morning about Mark Sanchez and gets a mini scouting report from his new Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
“One thing he does is play a little bit small,” said Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. “He plays a little bit shorter in the pocket so we’re going to try to get him to stand up a little bit. But he really is advanced for a guy who has 16 starts.”
…
“The one thing that jumped off with me was the accuracy. When we talk in terms of accuracy and ball placement, accuracy would just be the ability to throw the ball where a guy can catch it. But ball placement is when it’s thrown to a specific spot (over the right or left shoulder, for instance).
“Footwork is very good. Playing in that pro-style system at USC, he’s been well-coached. He’s got a good feel for it.”
Schottenheimer said he likes Sanchez’s personality and leadership and said he won’t have to “dummy down” the offense to accommodate the young quarterback. He called him a “gym rat,” saying the 22-year old loves football and follows the game.
Also, Schottenheimer said he’s not concerned about whispers that Sanchez doesn’t have a big-time arm.
“I can compare it to some of the guys I’ve been around, with Phillip (Rivers) and Drew (Brees) and he’s got plenty of arm strength to be successful in this league,” he said. “I have no concerns about that at all.”
Philip? Ya betta ask somebodayyyyyyyy!!
If Mangini was still the coach, imagine (1) that the Jets would even let Schotty talk to the press, (2) allow him to say more than “he’s got potential and we’re just looking for progress” and (3) would allow him to mention their plans for using/not using parts of the playbook.
All the same, we’ll see how it bears out. I’m glad that Schottenheimer has a fun challenge to work on this year. I’m just hoping that Schottenheimer stays long enough in NY to keep some continuity in Sanchez’ playbook so that Sanchez doesn’t have a Jason Campbell early pro career.

I think I almost choked on my breakfast… did you just use the words “hope” and “stays” in the same sentence for Schotty?
I do agree, but I’m still surprised.

Just like a player, coordinators can’t always be at the top of their game and in all fairness, there were a lot variables that were thrown into the mix during the year that made it tough on Shotty. Nobody knows the level of planning for the season he made with Chad and Kellen driving the offense. Then having to dummy it down for Favre, build the chemistry and have to deal with Manigini’s input, since his job was on the line with Favre at the helm. In fairness, I am willing to strike last year from Shotty’s record, because he has been solid otherwise. Having his QB’s going into the season will give him a solid understanding of what his QB’s bring to the table and allow them to work the right system that is best for them throughout the year. Granted, we may end up picking up a veteran WR at some point. But I don’t think that would be anywhere as disruptive as bringing in Favre was last year. I think Shotty has the goods and am excited to see this offense this year.

not to kill this article but they put this out the day of the draft
-
Good morning guys! Did we sign Matt Jones yet? :-)
-
If they sign TJ, and they must, the Jets will have the best ground game in the NFL this year with Green, Washington and TJ. Shotty will make sure that Sanchez is placed in the best position to develop to his full potential ( remember Drew Brees) and our offense will be better and more efficient than last year. All you Schotty bashers will be sorry he is gone after this year, MARK MY WORDS!!

I think the Jets are going to play hard ball with TJ….I am not sure where I stand on the TJ situation but would love to see what type of damage we can do with the 3 headed monster running game….
TJ has been through this before it wasnt a pretty sight in Chicago. He thought he was the man (which he was) and then they drafted C Benson.
-
AKA Drew,
There are some similarities between this situation and that one, but the one big difference that could make this work is that Greene is a 3rd round pick, not the 4th overall pick in the draft, so he won’t come in here making 10 times what TJ is (like Benson did). Still if it pisses off TJ and motivates him to try and prove he’s better than Greene I’m all for it.
-
Agreed sec108….but
The Jets traded up to get Greene and TJ is 5 years older now. At 31 (32 next season) he knows the Jets have options and he is fighting for his NFL life and last contract.
TJ is a proud guy…. I just hope this gets resolved. We need TJ to make noise next year
-
Any word on if Leon got “paid” yet?
-
The FO can play ” hardball ” all they want with TJ, but the bottom line is if TJ walks, HALF of our potent ground game walks out with him. And, with a rookie (Franchez or KC) QB, how successful we are depends for the most part on our ground game.
-
I have to agree with you Hank.
-
If TJ walks, he walks away from a sure million bucks (salary plus any ancillary income). More importantly, he walks away from a career. As a FA next year, he has a chance to sign for at least another million bucks and likely more.
Hank, give it up. TJ has a contract with two years left on it. If is willing to walk away from at least two million and the chance to play football in NY, then he would not have helped this team anyway.
If you want to worry, worry about depth and our starting WR, TE and DE. If you insist on worrying about TJ, worry about where he will play next year because it is very unlikely he will play here unless Greene or Leon gets seriously injured and TJ has a second good year (and, if you look at the teams we played an his ypc, that is all he had).

Like our famous philosopher once said: ” It’s deja-vu all over again”. Only this time Tannenbaum has outsmarted himself. In trying to do to TJ by drafting Green what he did with Baker by drafting Keller, it’s not going to work this time. If he follows the same path with Jones as he has wirh Coles, Moore Kendall and all Jones will walk and the Jest offense will suffer. Now he needs to satisfy TWO high price RB’s. He must therefore, either give the $$$$$ to both players or damage our potentially devastating ground game. And in view of our “young” QB situation he can’t win. Rex, and the team, is countting heavily on our ground game if we are to make the plyoffs.
-
TJ will shut up and play. If you really think that 31 tear old players who are being paid fairly should have their contracts reworked when they still have 2 years left on them, you must be an agent. TJ will shut up and play because he has no other option but to do so. What is he going to do, sit out the season?
-
Harlan:
****So you think a $ million salary for an NFL RB that was the leading rusher las year is just fine? I guess you must’ve come from Tannenbaum’s school of financing.
****And do you thing Green, a rookie, can carry the “ground and pound” offense by himself ? Or do you want to get Leon killed?
Oh, I forgot, we have a new super hero in NY…..FRANCHEZ !!!!! -
NYCPE:
How do you know TJ wants his contract, like you say..”reworked ” ?,
-
He wants more more money, but has 2 years left on his old one (which no one forced him to sign), What would you call it.
Yes, he led the afc in rushing last year, with the lowest total in years and with a good, but not great, ypc. He is a good player, no question. My points are:
A.) He is being paid fairly
B.) He has 2 years left on his contract
C.) He is 31
D.) He is good, not greatIf they throw him a bone, it will be a small, largely symbolic one so that he can save face.
-

You said:
“He wants more more money, but has 2 years left on his old one (which no one forced him to sign), What would you call it.”In view of Tannenbaums history of NOT KEEPING their PROMISES to PAY BONUSES by using escape clauses (see Moore, Coles and all), I would call that VERY SMART, NOT reworking. He is only making sure he gets what’s comming to him period, end of sentece.
Also, he is a smart guy and knows his better days are numbered, still ahead, but now more than ever, he wants to EXTEND ala Rhodes, not rework a deal which I don’t blame him one bit.
-
watch him crawl back with his tail between his legs and be happy IF they throw him a small bone. Like I said, he’s good, not great behind a terrific Oline and terrible when his Oline sucks. He is overplaying his hand.
-
Don’t get me wrong, I like TJ, but what he wants and what he will get are two different things. Without question, I would prefer him to be there this year.
-
TJ is going nowhere. He can’t sit out the season, or even the first 10 games to get credit for the season, He’d STILL be under contract for another year, He has no leverage because he’s 31, He’s seen his last big payday. All he can do is play out this season and hope he produces. If he does, and the Jets cut him to avoid his roster bonus the following year, THEN he can sign a 1 or, if he’s very lucky, 2 year deal elsewhere.
Once again I say his “holdout” is a tempest in a teapot.
Call me when he actually misses a required team practice.

This guy has a LOT to prove. I mean Schttenheimer. Last year his play calling was suspect, not fluid at all. Quite a few of Farve’s interceptions were due to wide recievesnot being where they need to be, plays called by schottenheimer that were NOT run well in practice.
Speaking of Favre-
Yahoo rumors reports that he hired a personal trainer. hmmmmm……
