News: Jets Work out Veteran Tight End

by Bassett on May 7th, 2009 at 9:30 am

According to Dave Hutchinson, the Jets worked out a Tight End that could complement Dustin Keller.

The Jets … worked out veteran Michael Gaines Wednesday, according to a person with knowledge of the workout. He spoke on the condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak for the Jets or Gaines.

Gaines, a 6-foot-4, 277-pounder who is primarily a blocker, is a sixth-year pro who has played with the Panthers, Bills and Lions. Last season, he caught 23 passes (13 for first downs) for 260 yards and a touchdown with Detroit.

Working out Gaines could be an indication that the guys the team brought in over the weekend for the rookie minicamp aren’t players they project playing much this season.

wait till we get those gaines on you

Michael Gaines is a better blocker than Baker and is a great fit for this offense. The guys they brought in , with the exception of Davies were not strictly blocking TE’s, they were more like receiving TE’s

Can we huury up and sign Braylon

I realize I am beating a dead horse here but had to add one more comment about Bret Favre and Eric Mangini. If Favre had a arm injury that clearly started to break down his ability why the hell wasn’t he more forthright with the coaches about the extent of the injury. We had an able bodied QB on that roster(KC) who could have probably one two of theose last five games and not thrown 12 picks. Mangini must have known he was playing with half and arm. Why wouldnt he pull the ole bag of bones. Either way the two of those nitwits cost us a chance at the playoffs. Good Riddance to em both

Micheal gaines is not a bad pickup at all

If we sign Gaines it shows that patiance is a virtue. It would be nice if we could get a veteran WR, and I am very impatiant. The Jets currently have 12.5 in cap space, they need 4 million for draftees. So how much will it cost us for a blocking TE, sign Leon, and how much left for a veteren WR. Gaines signed last year with the Lions a ten million dollar contract for 3 years, with 3million guarenteed. We were paying Baker 3million a year Tanny thought that was too much, but Baker signed with New England at 2.9 a year. Robert Royal seemed to get a deal in Cleveland for about 3 million a year. Bajema was looking for something North of the Vet Minimum at approximatley 1.5 and Bubba Franks pulled down about 1.7 IMO Gaines is a better fit than Baker, Royal, Bajema ,or Franks. But like everything else it gets down to BUCKS, the market seems to indicate that 3million is the going rate, Tanny thinks thats too much, after all he can get Kareem Browne to play Blocking TE for 400,000. Gaines is on his fourth team, so you wonder if theres a discount. The only reason I care is that it impacts the jets getting a veteran WR, the last thing on the shopping list

Would be an excellent and ideal signing…..would also prove that once again Mr T knows what he is doing. Gaines could easily replace Baker and allow Keller to become a monster

  8. avatar jvsvn says:

The availability of players like Gaines is why the Jets felt comfortable trading away all those mid-round picks. He does seem like an ideal addition given our needs at TE. As others have pointed out, it all comes down to dollars. If we can’t get Gaines signed, there will be other TEs available as teams cut down through the spring and summer.

    We all have a boss.
Tannenbaum has shown Woody that he can sign the big time Free Agents. Tanny has engineered some great trades, (Jenkins, moving up for Harris and Revis) with Sanchez possibly his best. The next task is to save his boss some money. It would have been easy to rollover on the Baker deal. After the criticism Tanny got for Kendall, it would certainly br understandable, if he can sign Gaines for 2 million a year, and if effect saving his boss a million, he has completed the GM Trifecta…..

This would be a good signing only if cheaper than 2 mil a year. And low cap hit, maybe load it for next year.

  11. avatar SackDance99 says:

    6-4, 277? He’s almost bigger than Woody!

I actually think that Gaines would be a good fit for us – I was another who took note when he was released by the Lions.

Noticed that we apparently had Charles Spencer in for a look too – any opinions?

Dont know much about Gaines, but if he can block sounds like a good pick up. He definitely has the height and weight to be a good blocking TE as well as averaging around 20 receptions the last couple of years to keep the opposing defenses unsure of his role. Sounds Great!

Jet Orange – just to tweak what you said about the cap above. They are estimated at 12.4 under, but only need 3.4 to sign the rookies, however, they need $5m for potential incentives ($3.6m of which relates to Gholston). However, I think if and when they extend Leon, they’ll do so without increasing his 2009 cap number. Same with TJ probably, although they may be waiting to see what they can afford to advance him once they’ve finished spending.

$2-3m for Gaines or someone of his ilk shouldn’t be a problem.

Spencer was a great prospect a few years ago. Interesting to see if they think he’s an option because that could bolster the depth.

  15. avatar JetOrange says:

Thanks Bent, that incentive number is huge. You have said over and over again that Edwards and Boldin were not possible cap wise. The numbers support your premise.

  16. avatar Bent says:

JO – actually the position is slightly better now because KC and Elam are off the books and the rookie cap isn’t as high as expected. However, it would still be tough to fit in a guy like those two whether they wanted a new deal or not. To say it would be impossible would no longer be accurate, but it would still be tough to do without other moves.

Chad Johnson, Owens and Holt are guys that it probably wouldn’t have been possible to get based on their 2009 cap numbers, but Boldin and Edwards have low enough 2009 cap numbers (and if they wanted a new deal, they could backload it, I suppose).

Just because they can barely afford to do so, doesn’t necessarily make it the smart play though!

  17. avatar GlockNSoul says:

Those must be some ridiculously achievable incentives for Gholston – sure weren’t base dupon playing time or impact !

  18. avatar Bent says:

Probably not, actually. Unfortunately, due to the possible uncapped year, not likely to be achieved incentives count against the 2009 cap if achieved during the season. Since an NFL team cannot risk going over the cap because of the huge penalties that would involved (mutliple first round picks etc), they will need to stay that far under the cap even if they don’t think the incentives will be met.

His 2008 NLTBE incentive was not earned, but never counted against the cap anyway.

  19. avatar JetOrange says:

Bent once again you have done some outstanding work today, thanks.
In referance to WR’s, Edwards seems to be a bit of a diva, too much baggage with Plax (Manny just got suspended for 50 games ) and Boldin just is not a good fit.

  20. avatar rich says:

we need a legit end opposite ellis, which is why we should pounce on darnell dockett!! the guy is near his prime and wants out,, his salary is less than ellis’ which he has reason to b unhppy about and is demanding a trade for… get dockett, sign plaxico!
