Link: Rosenhaus Doesn’t Get It

by Bassett on May 13th, 2009 at 7:00 am

What is it with Jets’ Running Back agents and Twitter this week?

The media has made a big deal about Thomas Jones missing voluntary workouts. Let’s see if they take the same approach with Leon Washington.

Many New York media folks have already reported and reacted on this, and as they’ve pointed out, it’s mostly a flawed analogy.

Jones hoped to get out of Chicago in 2007 because Cedric Benson was nipping at his heels. The Jets were Thomas Jones’ fourth team, and as part of the trade, Jones got a fat new contract with the Jets, smartly front-loaded because well … he’s an aging running back. Now into the back half of his deal and all the good part of his money is up, he’s angling for a new contract. Leon Washington on the other hand, is stuck in his rookie deal he has outperformed, but in a way that’s hard to quantify.

Rosenhaus advised Jones toa 4 year deal. Because of the way teams structure contracts to manage to the cap, the years are very disproportionate. If you look at the context of Thomas Jones 4 year, $20mil contract AS A WHOLE – he is fairly paid – if you average it out over 4 years, he makes $5 million a year. Ladanian tomlinson will make 6 or 7 million a year – he is right where he should be. Tannenbaum will not let Rosenhaus try to leverage the fact he front loaded the contract for cap reasons. The very reason he did that was because he knew he would need to resign Leon this year.

It is both short sighted and selfish for Thomas Jones to be doing this. Yes, he led the AFC in rushing last year, but he was 6th overall in the league. And it was the lowest total by the AFC leader in quite some time. Add in the fact he SUCKED in 2007 and it’s crystal clear his success is completely dependent on the offensive line. Now you could say that for all runningbacks, but the difference between 2007 and 2008 is so vast – it goes to show TJ can’t make plays on his own – he can’t make guys miss, he can’t run over anyone and he can’t out run anyone. Watch some Shonn Greene highlights on youtube – he’s faster, he’ll ll run over a lot of people this year – and he’s a lot cheaper.

Can we wait until Greene plays against NFL talent before we declare that he’s going to run over a lot of people? The Jones situation should be sorted it out simply because we do not know what we’re getting out of Greene. Next year if he shows us something, by all means cut Jones if he’s being a child, but to think he can easily replace Jones this year is ridiculous.

We have to have TJ this year, no question about it. I think there’s a very good chance that he’ll take his experience from last year and have a huge season, especially with the number of carries he is going to get. Pay him — not only to be our feature back this year, but also Greene’s tutor. That’ll pay dividends for years to come.

  4. avatar charleyjet says:

Give Leon his $$$ and trade Jones for a WR.

  5. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

I dont think it would take a lot of $ to placate TJ, so we shold do it. Imagine he isnt on the team, where would we get veteran leadership from? I agree that he isnt Adrian Peterson, but he played well in his two years here ( INCLUDING 07 when we had NO O-line) so throw the guy a few bucks. They can bring forward some of next year’s money and guarantee it, therefore not even taking a cap hit, like with LC and Baker last year. Or thy can just pay him with some of that internet money.

Your argument is not only dead on but substatiated by FACTS!!! Thomas Jone not only “carried” the running game for us in ’07 but our offense along with it.

Out of 16 or so 1000 plus yards rushers last year, TJ was #1 in the AFC and # 5 in the NFL.

He has been ONE out of THREE RB’s to have rushed over 1000 yds in each of the last FOUR years.

HE IS A WORK HORSE AND RUNS WITH VENGANCE while Green is an unknown commodity.

    Wake up people!!

  7. avatar RKNYC says:

    I disagree Hank.

Without the line, without spending for Faneca and Woody and re-upping Moore, there would be no Thomas Jones.

Don’t get me wrong I appreciate his work ethic and leadership and toughness, intangibles that are highly valued, but his production is what we are paying him for and I think there are 2nd stringers on a lot of NFL benches that could run behind this line.

Remember how great he was 2 years ago? No? Of course not because he was below average.

Also I think that he is missing NOTHING by skipping the OTAs and that goes for Leon too. Let them sit out. They both will not get a dime and their agents will suffer.

    RCNYC:

I don’t think you read my comments correctly. I said: “Jones not only “carried” the running game for us in ‘07 but our offense along with it.” The Year is “07, not ’08. Regardless, you guys are selling him short despite the FACT that, like i said, he is one of only three RB’s in the NFL that has rushed for more than 1000 + yards the last four (4) years and verry little wear and tear !!!!

  9. avatar frustratedjetfan says:

TJ has short-term memory problems. The Jets “rewarded” him with a new contract when he came on board giving him 65% (13M/20M) in the first 2 yrs. Now he’s complaining that he’s underpaid for the remaining years. That’s BS; he just wants another front loaded windfall (5M on avg yr + any new incentive $).. Trade him now off a peak season before his production and value falls. Get a draft choice and/or WR help.

Leon’s a different situation. Now’s the time to sign a long term deal while he’s entering his prime.

  10. avatar RKNYC says:

I did misread that but still I think, with a potential replacement in Green, we could do without TJ.

In a perfect world everyone would be content to play with their current contracts but since that isn’t the case I would let TJ sit if he chooses to hold out.

He is a very good RB but he is not great.

I’d love to keep him and pay him if it were just that easy. Same with Leon.

And this is all speculation anyway. So they didn’t show up to optional/voluntary team stuff. So what? It’s overrated anyway.

  11. avatar RKNYC says:

And I have not yet seen anywhere that TJ has complained that I can recall. He just didn’t show up.

  12. avatar jetsfaninmiami says:

    I agree with charleyjet,
give Leon money and trade TJ for a WR… if we pay them both we will have no money for a WR and will have to live with what we have which might turn out to be not such a bad thing….major decision time

  13. avatar hank/naples says:

    RKNYC:

The problem is you still have to sign Franchez, Green a top WR AND Leon. Then TJ would sit out and our “ground and pound ” would be “ground and !/2 pound”. I don’t think Franchez can handle the additional load. I guarentee we don’t get past Miami without Jones.

  14. avatar jetfanATL says:

Everyone who says trade TJ for a number 1 WR is smoking crack. There are very few WR’s available who can match TJ’s production from last year in terms of yards and TDs and those that can Boldin, maybe Edwards maybe Ocho Cinco are good enough that their teams would never trade them for Jones straight up. We really don’t need to be trading future draft picks as we need to hold on to them and build depth next year……if we’re going to get another WR we are more likely to sign a WR off the street
