PFT notes today that it sounds like Leon Washington’s agent, Alvin Keels is flying to New York to meet with the Jets.
A league source tells us that agent Alvin Keels has headed to New York for face-to-face negotiations. Typically, such events occur only when it looks like a sit-down will result in significant progress.
An intriguing update. Keels’ twitter page seems to corroborate that he is in fact traveling, but no indication as to where. We’ll keep you posted with more …

I jus hope this doesn’t piss of Thomas Jones, unless they aleady know that they r going to trade him then who cares, but watch out for Jones to be upset if he doesn’t get a contract extension

Jets fan hit the lotto today if this happens. Leon is resigned and Farve decides to have surgery to fix that shoulder. Another team can officially get screwed like we did!

jlb0183,
Leon is still playing under a rookie contract. He is set to receive $500K this season. He has one year left and then he becomes a free agent. He deserves the contract extension.
TJ is under a contract that was front loaded where he has been paid something like 16 million over the past two years. Now, towards the end of his contract, when his salary goes down, he wants to renegotiate. The Jets would be in the right, if they played hardball with him. Personally, I like him and would try to work things out.
Bottom line, these are two different situations and TJ has no right to be pissed off.

Sounds promising

Looks like J Cribbs is pulling the same stunt in Cleveland. A explosive KR/PR that has yet to develop at another position looking for a big payday…
I think Leon has produced more than he has so I wonder if this has any effect?

Sign our only true offensive threat, could you imagine the offense without him, ouch! T. Jones has been replaced by Greene, football is brutal, you have to make your $$ last for 40-50 years after you are done playing. Probably get a 6th rounder for him.

just get this done please…. and then lock up mangold after sanchez and deal tj then were a go
-
It is so bad how poorly we are paying guys like Leon and Mangold. Need to give these two long term contracts, and lets get sanchez’s deal done ASAP too!
-
Brad?
Mangold and leon are playing under their rookie contracts. How are they getting paid poorly?
Mangold is getting the money every late 1st rounder us getting and Leon is getting paid like every 4th rounder is….
Both will get new contract (especially Mangold) but Leon’s deal is a little tricker as much as he is valuable he wants to be paid like an every down back which he hasnt been. He and the Jets will have to meet in the middle

Keep in Mind Harvlis – T. Jones is due 2.5 this year (salary +bonuses) , then 7.4 Mil next year (salary plus bonuses). If we cut him in 2010 – we’ll save 5.9mill off the cap.
Jones is scared that he will be cut next year before he get’s paid which will leave him as a 30+ year old free agent running back. He won’t get paid 7.4 million per on the open market that’s for sure.
So he wants a new contract to ensure he won’t be cut or to get more money this year. I see his point, but I see the Jets as well. He probably signed the deal in 2007 thinking that he could renegotiate this season. He knew this was coming and he would hold out – He’s a Rosenhaus client remember. The problem is, he’s replaceable and has little leverage because of his age and the Jets depth at RB (Provided they get Leon re-signed).
The Jets want to keep him this year, so they can see how Shonn Greene does, and if he does well – they will cut Jones next year. The bottom line here is the Jets have all the leverage, and Jones should admit defeat and show up at camp.

Not sure if there is any truth to this but I just heard on the radio that Thomas Jones does not want to renegotiate his contract for money, just an extension.
If there is some truth to that then I see no issue granting him that for another year or two. Yeah I know there is allot of money on the back end of his contract but it would also allow Mike T the ability to spread out that money owed to Jones over a few years so it would not effect the cap spending. In turn this could be good since he is still productive, and once he is used up and no longer productive the Jets can cut or trade him.

DK, Good points. TJ would be in no position to negotiate, if he didn’t have a good year but, he did the job. Not only did he earn his money, he earned a shot at this re-negotiation. Although, he is on the wrong side of thirty, his body has not been battered as badly as others his age. He is healthy and has a number of good years left. I hope the Jets work out a deal to keep him happy for the next two years.

I don’t think the Jets can get anything for Thomas Jones. They are better off keeping him and let him risk sitting out. I am sure he will be highly sought after after hitting 30 and sitting out a year.
Leon, on the other hand, needs to be signed but signed within reason.

Thank goodness! Hopefully this will get resolved quickly, and Leon gets back in camp. Now I have no issues with the current backs that are attending camp, but Lightning Leon will help Sanchez develop much faster then the other guys!
