In the New York Post, Brian Costello focuses on the cultural changes of the team that Rex Ryan has brought along with his former Ravens players to the Jets and it’s players both on and off the field.
“We have a special situation,” Scott said. “It’s almost like Rex is starting his franchise and he decided to bring us with him to start his franchise, his legacy with us. For us, that’s a tremendous honor to be part of what his story is going to be.”
…
When [Marques Douglas, Bart Scott & Jim Leonhard] arrived here, they were shocked at the culture around the Jets holdovers. In meetings, they watched their new teammates sit silent, heads down taking notes, seemingly afraid to speak up.
“The one thing I noticed was everybody was really tight when I first got here,” Leonhard said. “I think guys are starting to relax. With Rex and his staff it’s more like the coaches are working with you. They’re not above you, talking down to you. I think the guys are really open to that now.”
The Jets’ practices are now filled with the sound of Scott talking trash and the locker room is more alive than it was last year.
The ex-Ravens have brought more than just swagger north with them, though. They also brought a knowledge of Ryan’s system. They have the three areas of the defense covered — with Douglas up front, Scott in the middle and Leonhard in the secondary.
“It’s basically like having three more coaches,” linebacker Calvin Pace said
You’d have to imagine that the new regime is more what players enjoy on a day-to-day basis. It’s clear already that players are more chatty with media, more available via vehicles like Twitter, and enjoying the competition on the field and camaraderie off of it. Although most players give everything they can game in and out, I hope that players are going to willing to give even more to their new coach … they’re going to need it with a tough schedule in 2009.

Calvin Pace said what i stated when the deals for Jim and Bartt happened- that both of these guys would wind up being on field coaches- helping the rest of the defense understand their assignments, role. And Douglas also does it for the guys up front.
Glad to see these positive changes with the team. cant wait for the season to start -
calvin pace has to be used more effective

I was a mangini supporter when he was here. It’s amazing now to get a feel for just how repressed the players were under him. It’s not really being stated outright, but the implications are there: most players didn’t like Mangini much.
Of course, that doesn’t matter when you’re winning. But the way he coached those last 5 games, it was almost like he wanted out of town. I was shocked how quickly he seemed to lose the players at the end. Sure hope that Rex is the real deal – every first year coach seems awesome in May. -
I’m all for having attitude on defense but it makes me a little nervous that there is so much talking going on right now before we’ve ever seen these guys actually play a game. Big talk better be followed up with big stick.

Look, the fact is, when everyone really likes working for you they don’t call you Penguin!

Yeah, the talk is in STARK and VIVID contrast to what comes out of New England. We don’t know yet which way it’s gonna go BUT…At least now the NY Jets are creating their OWN IDENTITY. I think we’ll like it. I think Ryan IS the real deal as well as Sanchez.

If they don’t step up and back up all these promises people are going to be wishing for the silent bootcamp of Mangini.

When the Giants drafted Eli, big blue fans were excited, when Pittsburg drafted Roethlisburger and he started, Pitt fans were excited, when the Cowboys put Romo in, Cowboy fans were excited. They are not Americas team by the way.
My main point here is; these franchises always have something to be excited about and their fans always talk. Its like this is a brand new feeling for us, something we just don’t experience regularly with my beloved Jets. So we just tell each other not to talk so much, not to get too excited, don’t read into it so much. Let’s just wait and see… Blah blah blah, New York always has the best fans, no matter what sport is being played. We now have reason to talk and a reason to open our big mouths. YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT ITS ONLY MAY!!! J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS JETS BABY!!!

Just out of curiosity, was there even a small anti-Ryan clique in the Ravens locker room? I am loving the new regime so far, but is one of our fearless eds or beat writers going to investigate that? Even if it was one or two guys, and they were just crybabies, etc., there’s got to be a “Ryan’s a jerk” point of view out there, right?

I am a huge Ryan fan and hoped he would get the job but we did hear the same things out of Dallas after Parcells left….. I am not comparing the 2 coaches in Wade and Rex but you do hear this when a players coach comes in after a strict coach leaves
I am excited about the fun they are having but its May so I will temper my excitment…at least a little
