Link: Schatz Drops Some Jets Related Goodies

Peter King put together a benefit in honor of his long-time co-work Paul Zimmerman who recently suffered a stroke, and Aaron Schatz from Football Outsiders was in attendance of the event. Aaron shares some of his thoughts on the event, but there were two Jets related ones (Schatz homages Peter King’s “Ten Things” style) that caught my eye:

5) Best exchange during the question-and-answer with the two New York coaches (or as close as I can remember):
Questioner: “I’m a Jets fan, and listen, I love that Mark Sanchez is able to throw the ball deep, but don’t we need somebody to go catch it?”
Rex Ryan: “Well, we happen to feel…”
Questioner: “Wait, I have a second part also. What’s up with Vernon Gholston?”
Rex Ryan: “Ummm…” (pause) “Let’s see if I can answer that first question.”
6) In his answer to this question, Ryan was very high on David Clowney as the Jets’ deep threat in 2009.
7) Best question asked of the coaches: Female journalism student who asked Rex Ryan about rumors that the Jets are interested in Plaxico Burress. With Tom Coughlin sitting right there next to him, of course. Coach Coughlin was silent on the issue with a cheshire cat grin

Well, if it’s between Clowney and Stuckey as the deep threat, I’ll go with Clowney. But as far as who catches more passes this season, I’ll go with Chansi Stuckey.

  1. So Ryan never answered the Gholsten question?

  2. Yikes. Here’s hoping he’s quietly turning Gholston into the beast that he should be, planning to surprise the hell out of OL coaches throughout the league Week 2 versus the Pats.

Unwarranted Optimism: An Important part of any Jets fan’s healthy breakfast.

  3. Gholston better F’in rip it up…just let him playyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  4. Gholston is goign to see more looks at DE than OLB, i bet..
that would be using a player’s stengths to the Jets advantage.

  5. maybe they know something we dont, b/c there lining him up at end here and there but ryans defense is all about ability to improvise so nothing is written in stone… but ryan more than anyone will know how to utilize this guys abilities and thats getting to the ball and rushing the passer… hes small for an end though
