Link: Sitting Home in January?
Mike Florio writes for the Sporting News his six teams that won’t be going to the postseason again this year, and guess who’s #1 on the list?
If Brady is healthy, the Pats will be very tough to overcome for the division crown. So then the question becomes whether the Jets will be able to beat out the likes of the Steelers or the Ravens (whichever one doesn’t win the division) and the second-place team in the AFC South for the two wild-card berths. Given that the teams of the AFC East face a much tougher slate of games this year, playing each of the teams of the AFC South and the NFC South, it will be harder to compete in the standings with the teams of the AFC North (who play the teams of the AFC West and the NFC North) and the teams of the AFC South (who play the teams of the NFC West).
With a new head coach, defensive coordinator and quarterback and a thin receiving corps and two tailbacks who are skipping underwear practices because they want more money, the Jets would be better off targeting 2010 as the year in which they return to the tournament.
I hate to say it, but Florio has a point in talking about Brady and the schedule. It doesn’t mean that I’m writing the year off, but adding Brady back for the Patriots is a big factor that will propel the team forward in 2009 … I mean, they went 10-6 without him, and they went 18-1 the year before. If the Jets make it to the playoffs, they’ll have earned it, to be sure, but it’s hard not to see the return of #12 to New England and not wonder how different the AFC East will look this year because of it.

Bassett,
The patriots went 11-5 without him not 10-6.
I won’t give away much, but for those who are interested, we’re finishing up our projections to be used with our season preview.
The Jets offense projects as the 31st in the league and the defense isn’t in the top 15.
Yeah, the Jets will have a hard time making the playoffs this year.
Seanmac – is there a place where I can wager that the JETS will have better than the 31st scoring offense, yardage offense, and any other offense?
where do you rank the jets running game, 31st as well
if so the is a joke
no one knows what the jets will do this year bc they it is a different team
also about the pats. there offense is great, but there defense is nothing. they have no outside lb due to the fact that they traded verbal and the kid from ucf is out for the season
they wanted to give jason taylor 5 million bc they need help so bad
teams will run wild on them this year
I want the Jets to address WR,defensive and offensive line in next years draft. Realistically speaking the Jets should be a near complete team by 2011-2012 barring any injuries or setbacks.
Last year at this time I remember how the Dolphins and Falcons had no chance. I remember some guy named Obama having no chance. I recall a game that the Jets were supposed to lose to the Colts by 3 touchdowns, and countless other theoretical upsets. If the author chooses to apply logic to an unpredictable sport like football, good luck to him. For financial reasons, I hope he stays away from Vegas.
That’s why I don’t read or pay attention to FO, how does the #8 rushing attack in the NFL drop all the way to #31. I might listen if you said 18 or 20, maybe even 24, but 31. So let’s see, that means that Buffalo, Cleveland, Oakland, SF, are all going to have better offenses than us, so I’ll assume we’re only better than Detroit? I’m not even going to acknowledge the defensive ranking.
I know you’re going to tell me all about our deficiencies at WR and QB, but I don’t care, we can still run the ball and the QB and WR’s will come through and prove all you so called experts wrong!
Don’t feed the trolls.
seanmac31,
You’re just mad, because you lost two game sevens this week – Bruins Celtics.
Hahahahaha!
Barbella
Also – the rest of the ACL recovery world needs 2 years to get back to form, but Brady does not?
Warren Buffet,
2011-2012 half of the players on our team will be out of the NFL.
if we get anything out of sanchez we are playoff bound.
There are surprises and disappointments every year. I think we’ll be competitive on a game by game basis. It’s much, much too early to write the year off.
Making the playoffs in the AFC is hard. The Jets have the Pats in the division, the Steelers have won 2 Super Bowls this decade, San Diego with Merriman and a maturing Rivers is always there and there another half dozen teams. That being said, the Jets will finish, at least, second in the AFC East. If that’s good enough for the playoffs, then so be it.
seanmac’s rankings make sense from an FO persepctive because there’s no statistics to account for how the defense plays in Rex Ryan’s system or how Sanchez, who only had 16 Div. I starts, will guide the offense. Thus, FO envisions a team facing 8-men in the box, a QB who is not good enough to stretch the field and, even if he were, WRs not good enough to create separation. This anemic offense would, then, cause the defense to be on the field too long and, even great defenses can get tired. Plus, the D relies on Jenkins who, being over 30, will statistically likely be injured, as will Ellis. So, computers and statistical analysis don’t allow for the possibility of things going right,. Thus, the Jets will stink according to FO. I just hope that all of the Jets’ opponents are convinced they’ll be terrible, too. I like it better that way, because when they’re punched in the mouth and their lunch money is stolen, they’ll never see it coming.
I agree it will be very hard for the Jets to make the playoffs this year, but it will likely take time for Brady to be the Tom Brady who has been the star in NE. I also think he is over-estimating the strength of the AFC North. It is always hard for the SB teams to repeat the effort and the Steelers finished out of the playoffs in their last go around. Baltimore is going to be hurt by the loss of their DC and I still think Flacco has alot to prove. The AFC isnt a dominant conference anymore so I think the playoffs will be open to alot of teams this year that are not expected to make it. I dont think we are one of them but I wont write it off just yet.
i agree it will be tough for the jets to make the playoffs and the pats are no doubt the front runners.
but im not ready to crown the pats AFC east champs and hand them a 14-2 record. besides the obvious Brady question, they have several holes that warrant mentioning. how many more years does randy moss have as a #1 receiver? his production falling off with age or him going down with an injury would be a serious blow to their offense, as their running backs do not instill fear in anyone (although they manage to get the job done). can anyone name a pats DB besides meriwheather (who isnt that good IMO anyway)? the D-line will still be solid with seymour and wilfork, but other than mayo, they have significant question marks at LB and DB. who is going to relace vrabel, is adalius thomas going to contribute, is teddy bruschi still a starting-caliber level player? these are all valid questions. IMO, outside of wilfok, seymour and mayo, that does not seem like a superbowl defense.
my point is while the jets have question marks, so do the pats and it would be shortsighted to already hand them the division.
Where’s the guarantee that Brady will be his old self? Where’s the guarantee that they will be as good as they were 2 years ago, and had one of the best seasons in NFL history? They have as many questions as we do, and more so, what if Brady goes down, what happens when he gets his first real hit, and sack? Will he be the same player he was 2 years ago? Heck half the teams mentioned will make the playoffs, I don’t buy into his assessment. The Jets will be fine, especially with an offensive line rated one of the best, and an unpredictable and fierce defense to boot. No I not only see the Jets making the playoffs, but I see them as being the one team no one wants to play in the first round.
Off topic, but why does eveybody know that the Jets need a playmaker at WR except for the Jets? Go sign Matt Jones and stop fooling around with this offense… ridiculous.
Screw him! I say that the jets can make the playoffs. Instead of us Jets fans focusing on all the negative crap we’re always use to, we need to focus on the fact that our team is good enough to make the playoffs. We’re vastly improved from last year and now we have our franchise QB. Whether or not he will be able to get anything done this year remains to be seen, but if you feel that the Jets can’t make the playoffs before the season even starts, then don’t bother watching the season at all because you’re basically counting the Jets out before even giving them a chance. In my opinion, you’re not a jets fan if you don’t believe in your team, even when things are bad.
Dennon… i second that emotion.
The division doesnt even know whats coming on defense…Rex is gonna have something special for the Pats. Thank god we dont have Mangini to get mind-f**ked by Belechick every time. Rex is gonna pull the waterboy tactic… look accross the feild, see a little puppy dog and laugh.
D-FENSE!!!!!
LOL!!!! I like that puppy dog tactic from waterboy. That’s one of my favorite teams and I think that’s exactly what every Jets player should do when they face down the Pats….heck every team. Lol
I meant one of my favorite movies..”Waterboy”.. While I don’t envy our schedule, it’s the perfect opportunity to prove to the entire NFL what a dangerous team we can be and sooner or later, every team is gonna dread having us on their schedule..
GO JETS!!!!!
Dennon
Totally agree with the positive attitude. What kind of Fan is always looking at the negative. The reality is that no one knows for sure what is going to happen, and if you are a professional sports analyst you can be a critic…focusing on the negative. But a fan should always see the glass half full when faced with uncertainty. I hope these so called fans have a more positive attitude towards individuals in their lives who count on their support. We have a very good team, and if we the Fans support them through good and bad they will be a great team…GO JETS!
Its so easy to predict that last years AFC championship teams (BAL & PIT) will do well. WOW YOURE GOING OUT ON A LIMB WITH THE PATS TOO!!! please. Great predictions. Every year in the offseason people tell us that last years playoff teams will do well. DID ANYONE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ATL LAST YEAR? nope.
Bengals will be an 11-5 team this year. Us, hopefully 9-7 or 10-6 with a wildcard, and top 10 D.
I appreciate you positive fans out there (Dennon, Marc & Hojo3). I’m a long time Jet Fan (since Richard Todd) and I’m so tired of the loser cry baby comments and bringing up everything bad that has ever happened to us. Like other teams don’t have their forgettable memories. I’d rather look to the future and appreciate any success we’ve had since Rich Kotite. Our time will come!!!
All Aboard the Rexy Train..I am sure of one thing this season..the JETS are going to have some fun…youcan be 9-7 and miserably tense, or 9-7 and flying around having fun bodyslamming QBs. Our Team will soon be feared ala Ravens or Steelers! And our offense is going to be great with our full support!
Don’t forget that every year 50% of playoff teams don’t return to the playoffs.
That doesn’t mean the Jets will make it but that does mean some of the teams they are fighting against won’t make it.
seanmac
what are the giants predicted to do.
im sick of hearing about omg brady is back we will write off those two games…
brady can be beat…see giants superbowl…
he isnt superman and i am not afraid of him and neither should be any jets fan…
the only person that stands on the patriots sidelined is belicheck because he is just flat out an amazing coach…though i wish he would get hit by a truck cuz he is a POS of a person
Tom Brady is a #$%^. Listen closely, the Patriots will go 8-8 or worse mark it down!!!!!! They suck because they sent their healthy QB to KC for a 2nd rounder,. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, call it karma for their years of cheating.
J E T S JETS JETS !!!!!!!!
Playoff bound!!!!!
The only person afraid of brady and belechik was mangini.
The New Look Jets wont be afraid of anyone. All the negative nancies (including some “jets” fans on this blog) keep saying its all talk, we need to prove it… WHATEVER. At least we are saying the right things. At least we are allowed to talk this year!!!! The talk should inspire the players to prove it.
giant- The Giants offense is projected to be surprisingly not very good, down around 24th in the league.
As for the Jets projection, they’re lumped in with a few other teams- Buffalo, Kansas City, Detroit and, shockingly enough, Arizona. The only offense that is expected to be worse is Baltimore’s, which for some reason grades out as twice as bad as the next-worst offense.
Anyway, those who are hanging their hat on the fact that the Jets rushed the ball well last year (5th best in the league according to DVOA) probably shouldn’t, as that doesn’t carry over from year to year. Tampa was the 5th best rushing attack in 2007, and in 2008 they were 23rd. Indy was 4th in 2007 and 25th in 2008. Jacksonville was 6th in 2007 and 17th in 2008. Rushing doesn’t carry over the way passing does, and the Jets get flagged in every conceivable way for passing, as they are not only replacing a veteran with an extremely raw rookie, they got rid of their #1 wide receiver, and the rest of the receiving corp is so inexperienced as to not even register.
The defense projects to be on the lower end of middle of the pack, in the neighborhood of Cincinnati, Seattle and Tennessee (who takes a big hit without Haynesworth).
seanmac31
i would love to see your projections from this time last year for the 2008 season…
lets be real….nobody really knows anything about next year except that the steelers are going to be a good defensive team and that the colts are going to have a good passing attack…..
what about ranking turnovers and special teams production and can you rank how much heart the jets or any other team will have in the closing minutes of a game……things like that are what win and lose games for teams ……i’m a real positive jets fan and i always think they are going to do well…..i dont buy rankings for an offense that is gonna use different plays than last year with all the shifts and motions coming back ,a different quarterback a new contributor in the backfield, the same offensive line and a reciever wearing 87 not named coles.
do you rank 3rd down conversion percentage as well and sacks??where will the jets rank in all those very important categories that define the outcome of games…..
i’m not trying to be rude…..i jsut dont agree with your rankings of the jets of for that matter any team….its just impossible to determine anything at all right now……
One good hit on Brady and you can throw this opinion in the garbage. Talk is cheap. There’s a new Sherrif in town – and his name is Ryan. I’ve got a feeling Brady won’t enjoy playing us, this year.
Harvlis,
I love you buddy! You hit the nail on the head. Nobody knows what the hell is gonna happen. As Bill Parcells used to say “you’re only as good as your record says you are” so by that definition we’re 9-7 and decent. Not what seanmac and FO says we are, but decent. Do I think we’re going to the SB this year? No, but I think we’ll be competitive and thats all I ask for. But, I do see a successful future for the Jets because of Rex and Sanchez.
dade,
Here they are: http://footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2008/2008-dvoa-projections
The Jets were projected to have the 20th best offense and 17th best defense in the NFL. In the end, they finished with the 19th ranked offense and the 16th ranked defense.
http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teameff
The Jets played more or less exactly as they were expected to.
by nfl standards the jets ranked 16th in offense and 16th on defense……9th most points scored……..the last 5 games really brought the jets into those averages because they were a completely different team before that……..at one point the number 2 scoring offense in the league…..and that was pretty late in the year……….but i will say that i was surprised that those predictions weree that close……good job shutting me up..haha
Ramble,
The NFL season is like the Kentucky Derby. Lots of competitors bumping and grinding to hit the finish line first. Their are hundreds of factors that come into play during the race (season). In the end, if the rail opens up and if you have a good jockey, you might just sneak up on the field and come in first.
Don’t think that any team has a better chance to win the Super Bowl than us. No matter what team you think will win it — everything has to fall into place for that team to win.
Look at last year. After the Tennessee game, we were 8-3, we had just beat an undefeated team at their house, and both the O and the D were clicking. We were on a roll and then — the rug was pulled out from under us. Farve was hurting and not telling any one. Jenks, the same. The coaching staff fell off the table. If those two players stay healthy and, if we continued to improve off the Tennessee game — we had just as good a shot as anyone, to win it all.
We are better, this year. Better coach, better Defense, OL having played together for a full year, two young, hungry QB’s, OC with something to prove, Don’t bet against us, yet. Who knows, we may get Plax?
With all the people sayin how bad we are I cant wait for the season. Lead the nfl in pro bowlers last year and all but one maybe two(TJ) are returning. On top of that we added another three pro bowlers in the like of Lito, izzo, and scott. So let the talkers talk and the haters hate but im just excited for some football.
Good post Harvlis.
I suspect if Plax is on the team suddenly the numbers make us the top 4 offense?
Indy went from 4 to 25th because their starting line was messed up and they lost Addai.
I am more afraid of injuries than I am of any teams now.
If someone goes down at any position do we have the players to come in and keep us competitive?
As for the 31st offense in the league you might want to check what we lost from last year. We lost LC (70 rec, 850 yds), Chris baker(21 rec, 194 yds) and brett favre who was awful. The jets last year were ranked 9th in points, 16th in yds, 16th pass yds, and 9th in rush yds. I just dont see LC, Brett, and baker as that good of players to have earned us those numbers themselves.
RKNYC,
I think they have to worry about our depth on both lines. I still don’t know if they have two quality starting DE’s.
We have to qualitity de but its the backups that worry me. That is where ghoulston and pace come into play. Rex really gota concentrate on our front seven for the whole year. He has to bring more pressure off the edge. Easier said then done though. On defense its really all on ghoulston and pace if they start flying we are unstoppable.
i truely feel like tom brady wont be as good as people are saying he will be. He was off for an entire year lounging, and he got marryed. I just feel tom brady is now a different person and wont do as good
