Buzz: How Serious Are the Jets About Plax?
Corey touched on this over the weekend, Gary Myers had an article recently in the Daily News that he thinks that the Jets will be in the Plax sweepstakes should he clears his legal hurdles.
Plaxico Burress’ immediate football future should be clarified three weeks from tomorrow at his next court appearance. If Burress manages to avoid jail time and a lengthy suspension from Goodell, then I think the Jets are going to be serious about signing him. It makes sense from a football standpoint. He is exactly what the Jets need. But when you add the knucklehead factor into the equation, the Jets shouldn’t even think about keeping him in this market. Players in Burress’ situation lack leverage to get much guaranteed money, so the Jets could probably get him without much of a financial commitment.
Myers was right on the Jets interest in Cutler and again in Sanchez … so I don’t think he’s wrong here.
This will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can’t seem to find the link now, but I recall that there was interest in a player during the free agent period (not Plax, but someone else) who Ryan didn’t want because he felt he wouldn’t fit the team dynamic.
I have to wonder how Ryan would feel about a player like Plax, who based on his numerous fines via general inattention to workouts, training, physical therapy sessions, would work in Ryan’s rah-rah team perspective. I feel that Ryan would rather go to war with folks that are going to help each other, as opposed to players with their own freelance agendas.
Here’s some Burress highlights … just for fun …

Bassett….
I think that player Ryan was talking about was WR…Matt Jones
Plaxico Burress for the Jets in 2009….. YES!
Afirm AKA….Drew it was Matt Jones…I agree, sign Plax for a cheap price (as long as he is available to play in 2009 for us)
We have to get after this guy if he is available. I believe he will be humble to get picked up by the NY Jets. This guy is a stud WR who deserves another shot(pun intended)
Plaxico Burress for the Jets in 2009….. NO!
Tell the truth I would rather go after Chad Johnson…. cuz after diss season we would have to worry about his case..
if he can somehow avoid a jail time anytime soon or have a brief sentence before the season like bradshaw did, AND avoid a suspension, go for it.. jets are a playoff team if they get plax, and i dont think hes as bad as people perceive him.. alan faneca likes him, jerricho wants him, guys dont seem to mind and the giants players supported him throughout the entire fiasco and wanted him back.. and he’ll know he has to be on his best behavior to salvage his rep when he returns to football.. if he isnt going to jail DO IT
WR Matt Jones will not be suspended by the NFL…Too bad Rex doesn’t like him…he would be a good fall back cheap option if Plax doesn’t fall to us….

Sign him!!!! If they can’t, then sign Matt Jones!!!!
I heard an interview where a NY lawyer gave the statistics for people who were prosecuted for the same crime as Plax. I believe that every single one of them received jail time. In addition, Mayor Bloomberg has sworn to make sure that Plax would not receive preferential treatment. Therefore, as much as I would like to see Plax in green – it ain’t happening.
If he receives preferential treatment and somehow gets probation — I would include in his contract a clause that he must attend all mandatory practices. If he fails to attend a practice, he loses a weeks salary. No Excuses allowed. Prior to his shooting himself in the foot, he was abusing the Giants with his me, me, me attitude. If he has a problem with that – bye, bye.
As for his ability, without him the Giants have to win with Defense.
where do people get the perception that the giants wanted plaxico back??? have you seen the interviews where they ask eli if he wants plax back. eli never shows enthusiasm for getting plax back, he does the usual, “he’s a great athlete”, “was a big contributor”, etc – all the stuff you any athlete says about another athlete. yea, some of plax’s teammates showed some affection to plax, but if the QB isn’t in the boat showing that affection, it means that must more.
Yeah….with all his me,me,me attitude, where did it get him and the Giants? Superbowl Champions. Someplace the Jets haven’t seen in 40 years and counting.
tell that to Eli
