Film Room: Clayton Makes His Pick for Jets QB

by Bassett on May 26th, 2009 at 10:00 am

ESPN.com looks at some of the QB battles around the NFL, starting off with the Jets. John Clayton thinks that Kellen Clemens has the edge right now, but expects Sanchez to be starting some time in September.

September? If Clemens wins the job, how does Ryan switch QBs that early unless the team starts badly and looks awful? With our running game and defense, it’s hard to imagine Clemens losing the job that early unless he really stinks and is costing the team winnable games.

  2. avatar JDB says:

it’s called cold hard facts, but all he ever does is give his opinion

  3. avatar Zartan says:

if Clemmens wins the job then he should start. It would give sanchez time to learn a little more + he would most likely work to get the job which is a better way to get anything. If Clemmens plays good then he becomes great trade bate or a solid 2.

Let’s hope that Sanchez beats out KC. Sanchez needs to get NFL experience and letting KC get his 9th NFL start, while delaying Sanchez getting his 1st, is only logical if Sanchez stinks it up in pre-season. And, that’s just not good for the franchise.

DaveTN – sounds like John Clayton expects Sanchez to beat out Clemens by the season opener.

With Clemens’ contract up, does showing the NFL how good he may be do us any good? Maybe we get compensatory picks for losing a free agent… but I can’t imagine being able to trade him or get anything for him. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

    JDB- LOL.. so true..

My opinion is that Jets should start Clemens.. He gives us the best chance to win right now.. He’ll be way better than our rookie..

I can’t see Sanchez playing well enough to beat him out quite yet.. (only basing that on what was discussed about the recent OTA’s)
Training camp and pre-season will dictate it though..
It’ll certainly be fun to watch the kid grow into a superstar (i hope!)

  8. avatar SackDance99 says:

From what I’ve read, KC was only marginally better than Sanchez during the OTAs, which were dominated by the defense. We’ll get a better sense of who is better during training camp and, especially, in the pre-season games. When KC faces an actual pass rush and doesn’t wear a red jersey, he starts to unravel. If Sanchez is cooler under pressure and makes better decisions, he’ll start even if KC knows the offense better.

Matt – if Clemens leaves as a UFA, any compensatory pick would be based on his performance the following season, so the answer to your question is no. If he has a monster year, they could theoretically tag and trade him a la Matt Cassel.

Sanchez will be the QB sooner rather than later. Whether that is week 1 or not is hard to say. You don’t draft a guy number 5 to have him sit on the bench (please don’t mention Gholston now). I like KC but let’s face it, he’s not THAT good. He’s in his 4th year now and hasn’t made an impact. The best anyone seems to be able to say about him is that he knows the offense. In your 4th year that’s not much of an accomplishment. Sanchez may not get the call week 1 (although he may) but he’ll be under center by the end of the year (and probably much sooner than that). The writing is on the wall.

  11. avatar Pete57 says:

I’m hoping Clemens plays well, and Sanchez gets to sit for a year. Then we could tag and trade Clemens next year. Or the best case scenario is Kellen is sooo good we have to keep him and then we trade Sanchez to Washington for 4 #1 draft picks.

  12. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

For all those who want to tag and trade Clemens, the risk is enormous. One has to commit something like a 16 mil annual salary for a tagged Qb.

If another team does not want him enough to sign him to a big deal we cannot cut or trade him. That is a huge risk.

If the Pats were not bailed out by Pioli, I am not so sure they would have been able to move Cassel for all the talk by the Mediots.

We are best off at this point if Sanchez proves he is the guy. Someone takes a cheap flyer on KC and if he blossoms in another system, maybe we get a pick later.

  13. avatar Bent says:

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that we do that, Harlan. I merely mentioned it as the only possible way his performance could help the Jets in terms of compensation once he leaves.

However, when you tag someone, you can rescind the tag before the deadline to cut him with no implications, so the risk is minimal. If the Pats had no suitors for Cassel, that’s exactly what they could and would have done. In many ways, it’s just a formality to keep the window for a possible trade open, rather than losing the guy for nothing.

I could see the NFL clamping down on this practice in the next CBA.

So much restlessness on the subject of Quarterback.

Clemens should be the starter this year.

If he isn’t the starter…then he isn’t likely to ever be a good quarterback as he’s done a long and fitful apprenticeship under two fine quarterbacks.

It’s difficult to imagine how Sanchez could catch up on three years of experience withing 3 months. It’s not reasonable to expect that.

I also don’t like the espionage theory of trying to up his value and trade him.

Kellen Clemens is a valuable player on this team…whether that is starting until he is hurt and then playing 2nd fiddle until Sanchez is hurt …doesn’t matter…

In either case we have groomed at least a decent quarterback and there is always a need for that on any team.He certainly isn’t occupying much of the salary cap.
