Audible: Which Camp Battle Will You Watch?
Posted on May 28th, 2009 by Bassett
We’re going to write about this some more in the coming weeks, but there are a few battles for starting jobs as well as backups that could be very intersting this summer.
Other than the big one (Sanchez v. Clemens) which one camp battle are you the most intensely interested in watching? Let us know!

I’m excited to see if a healthy Danny Woodhead can make the team. His rookie season being cut short by a knee injury was disappointing for Jets fans searching for the new “Rudy”, or in our case Wayne Chrebet, for this team.
Woodhead versus the World.
Blocking TE: Bubba Franks vs. Kareem Brown vs. Martrez Milner. I get tingles up my spine just thinking about it.
Actually, I’m very interested to see where Lowery fits in — whether it’s as a CB or S.
Stuckey vs. Clowney/B. Smith for starting WR opposite Jerricho.
I’m with Mole57, I love the TE drama, and the effectiveness or lack of from the Wide Receivers..
Then there are the underdogs that I root for
1. Mike DeVito
2. Ropati Pitoitua
3. Jason Trusnick
4. Marques Murrell
5. Ahmad Carroll
6. Mike Kracalik
Then I have my Undrafted Free Agents
1. Jamaal Westerman
2.Brannen Southerland
3. Zack Potter
Lowery vs. Lito
Kerry Rhodes versus His Uncontrollable Urges
Gholston vs. Pace vs. Thomas…It’ll be interesting to see whether Gholston can crack the starting lineup.
Gotta be the WR’s .. praying/hoping someone steps up
but yeh – Gholston – stud or dud ?
Punter….who the hell is going to punt for us.
There are some interesting battles like…..
all of the back up postions especially DL and LB
VG vs BT
Lowery vs Lito
….but we have lost a few games over the last 2 years with poor punting resulting in horrible field position. We need to have a guy take that job and run with it this year. Enough of the revolving door of bad punters
I like The Cummings kid, I want to see him as a ILB
Gholston vs. Thomas
Stuckey vs. Clowney
Jenkins vs. Lunch
Gholston vs Thomas. I thought this would be a huge battle last year and was dead wrong. BT stinks. If Gholston can not beat him out Ill be very disappointed.
I’m looking forward to the WR battle. I want to see who rises to the occasion, will it be B. Smith, D. Clowney, C. Stuckey, or W. Wright. I think all these guys can be players.
Jets WRs versus free agency (mainly Plax)
Can Cotchery emerge as a true #1 option? Can Stuckey be a Welker type of reception machine using his quickness and good hands? Can Clowney become a legit deep-threat? Or will they not live up to the hype (amongst Jets fans at least) and we’ll have to dip into free-agency… I’d much rather success within the organization. I think of Cotchery as a 1.5 receiver… Not as good as a true #1, but better then almost every team’s #2… If Stuckey can be a chain mover like Chrebet and Clowney can use his speed effectively then the Jets might have a seriously pretty F-ing good passing attack for several years when you add in Keller. Lets go Jets.
A lot of great answers from all of you so far..
LOL at Kerry Rhodes vs. his urges comments…. though, i think it’s more like “Rhodes vs. his friends’ urges”…
Clowney vs. Smith vs. Stucky vs. potential free agent signing.. who is catching the ball? I think we’ll be ok though.
Backup TEs.. who are they (besides Bubba)?
Punters, good call on the “who’s our punter” comment..
Back up DL.. what can they do?
Woodhead, he’ll make the roster.. cue up that bad Journey song…
Cummings is good, but i like Trusnik.. he played great in the season finale last year..
Lowery vs. Lito is no contest.. Lito will start hands down.. It’ll be interesting to gauge Lowery’s improvement though..
It’ll be interesting to see if the Jets have any key injuries during training camp/pre-season and who steps up to fill that spot.. I’m hoping we don’t have to worry about that though
Peter King “being the master of his domain” now that he is within 30 minutes of Brady/Belichick on a daily basis
Greene v. Jones v. Leon (with Woodhead looming). It’s pretty clear that the Jets will have a running back by committee backfield, but who will be the Chairman of the Board? And, who will be in training camp? The Jets haven’t taken an RB in the 3rd round or higher since LaMont Jordan in 2001. Let’s hope that this Jets regime finds a way to use Greene because LaMont’s Jets tenure was a total waste.
Clowney v. Stuckey v. Smith for the WR2 spot. Each of these guys has different skill sets. Clowney’s the deep threat, Stuckey’s the possession guy (although, will he lay out for a pass? Welker does and Chrebet did), and Smith is the YAC guy. For Keller to be at his most effective, I’m hoping that Clowney wins out because he’s the guy that can stretch the field vertically and that will leave more room for Keller to roam underneath.
Bart Scott vs The Shadow of Ray Lewis…. Unfortunately this will be a battle for a while. I hate Ray Lewis and his shadow!
Leon Washington vs his stupid agent
In this order:
1. WR – barring any future player acquisition, it would be interesting to watch who will emerge as the second starter opposite Cotchery? Hopefully, Clowney can deliver the goods.
2. TE – Who would be the most effective blocker out of the current crop of has-beens, journeyman, DL convert and Free Agents?
3. RDE – If Douglas can’t perform consistently for 2-3 snaps, who will emerge as his platoon mate?
4. CB – Can Sheppard solidify the spot opposite Revis?
5. RT – Is Woody the answer or will there be someone gunning for his spot?
6. OTHERS – Gholston, I believe will be part of the OLB rotation but will he be entirely a situational player or will he contribute significantly. The No.6 picks shouldn’t be situational players.
What’s up with Clowney?
On his Twitter, he posted last night, “I think im bout to make some Pork Chops and rice and corn on the cobb,.. so what if its 3:30 in the morning”
Not what i’d be doing at 3:30am if i had to be in OTAs the next day, but what do i know..
Plax v. Manhattan DA
I’m squarely in the Plax camp. The Jets should sign him and, if Plax gets a plea deal that allows him to go to training camp and play in ‘09, the Jets offense looks much better, even with a rookie or KC at the helm. The Jets haven’t had an all-purpose WR with Plax’s talent since Toon. Yes, I’m dissing Keyshawn, who was just a glorified possession WR, not a complete weapon like Plax. Sure, he’s a diva, not the best clubhouse presence and a poor shot, but he has upper echelon NFL talent at WR. The best way to judge that is look at the Giants offense after he shot himself, he could not be replaced. Sign Plax!
The water-boy vs the ball-boy!
In the same light as Jenkins vs. Lunch…
Pouha/Jenkins Vs. Catering
Tannenbaum vs. Keels is a big one
Woodhead vs. The Odds
Gholston vs. Thomas- or Douglass (if he lines up at DE)
WRs vs. The need to bring in new WRs
T-Rex vs Tangini.
Did we make the right move or will Mankok take the browns to the playoffs.
The battle for the 2nd WR spot should be good. Although I think Stuckey will earn the job pretty easily. the real battle is which receiver will emerge as a significant contributor, Clowney or Brad Smith.
OLB is another good one, essentially B Thomas vs. Gholston. All of us as jet fans should be rooting hard for Gholston.
Lito Sheppard vs Donald Strickland vs Swipe Lowery – a battle for playing time.
David Harris’ teeth vs Jim Leonard’s hard head
Regular Joe Jets Fans vs. PSLs
Schotty vs a run on 3rd and short
Huey Whittaker vs Marcus Henry. Who’s going to be our big target. It would be nice if Plax signed up for the job but, he will be behind bars soon.
ali vs frasier
Ill be watching the 2nd team O’Line competition very closely. The emergence of a Hunter, Turner or Slauson as a viable replacement starter may be more important than a lot of the battles above if one of the fab five goes down for a prolonged amount of time. I think we signed a FA tackle as well.
We’ve given up a ton of draft picks over the past couple of years so I’m rooting extra hard for our recent undrafted FAs and practice squaders to make up for the lack of drafted depth (eg Rutgers LB, TEs, D Wood and the punters)
douglas vs Devito……….We know Devito can play but id like to see him push douglas out of the starting line up
Matt Jones, Plaxico Burress & Mikael Vick battle for #1 Wide Receiver opposite Jericho Cotchery.
The battle for the last spot on the Flight Crew…
Looking forward to the battle for the clipboard: The Man from ‘Ahvard vs. the Disappearing Vol.
Lowery vs. Strickland should be interesting. Lowery keeps surprising everyone. He doesn’t have the speed but certainly has the instincts. Had an up and down year but, considering he was a rookie 3rd round pick at a position that is difficult for anyone to succeed in one’s first year, he out-performed expectations.
Gholston is key to the defense. His level of improvement will determine the difference between a good and elite defense.
I think Cummings and Murrell will step up this year and give further flexibility to a unit that will be asked to wreck havoc.
Can someone emerge from the pack that can give Jenkins a breather without compromising the center of the D? We will see.
Tanny vs. Kiel will be an interesting one but will take place out of our view (Tanny might break Kiel’s twitter if it doesn’t). A bloodied Kiel will suffice. Tweet, tweet!
How ’bout a riveting rivalry for Long Snapper?
Rookie Free Agent, Anthony Harris DT-LS
-vs-
Veteran James Dearth TE-LS who has served as long -snapper on punts and placekicks in every game since start of 2001 season.
I get a kick out of the Punting battle between rookie free agents:
T.J. Conley
-vs-
Eric Wilbur
Both trying to fill Reggie Hodges shoes who was released April 27th.
