News: Thomas Jones Mum on Contract

By Bassett on 28. May, 2009

Although he returned to practice, Thomas Jones has refused to talk about his contract, according to Dave Hutch

Running back Thomas Jones, who showed up for the first time this offseason on Wednesday, refused to address the media concerning his contract dispute with the team.

“It’s good to see him,” said Ryan. “He told me he was happy to be here.”

Ryan said he didn’t get any assurances from Jones that he’s here to stay. Jones is due to earn $900,000 this season and is unhappy with his contract, a four-year, $20 million deal that paid him $13.1 million in the first two years.

Interesting point about the fact that there are no assurances. I just don’t see what he expects to get, he’s got little leverage in this situation and the drafting of Shonn Greene made it even worse.

I thought this was going to be about Thomas Jone’s British Mom talking about his contract

He should get a 2yr extension, that’s it, nothing more, he did know what he was getting into when he signed the contract, he should jus shut up and play or practice hard enough for a trade

The front office should sign him until 2011 with little extra pay included, but the remainder the money from this contract should get spread out more evenly. I think that would make both parties happy. Chances are Jones would retire a Jet.

    Very Simple Solution.

How about the jets bring over 2 million from next years salary to this year. Thus he will be getting about 3 mil this year, and 5 mil next year. If he has another solid year, we will pick up the 5 mil. option

seriously….for a guy who is supposed to be a leader on this team…. its kinda weak to be doing what he is doing.

granted i am all for these guys getting what they can, they play a violent sport, where careers are short and contracts are not guaranteed….

but considering he was an average or slightly above average player when we traded and signed him, and we paid him 13 of the 20 mil in the first 2 years….

    http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playersbyposition.aspx?pos=131

thats a link to the 2008 salaries of all the RB’s in the NFL…. based on last year he was paid like an average RB…

but to get 65% of your contract after playing out 50% of it….is pretty freaking good. If he shuts the Z$$@ up and does it the right way he should trust that the team will bump him up a bit this year…

new coach, new attitude…all positives…so grow up and just play.

Jones knows Tannenbaum’s history of not honoring bonuses and/or back end of contract of players on “the wrong side of thirty”. If Jones walks, and he probably will unless assured of getting the bling (Coles, sounds familiar? ) Ryan’s “gound and pound” will be reduced to ground and 1/2 lb.
With a “new” QB our offense is in deep trouble !!! We need to keep him happy !!

Because Brady and Manning are getting paid like the top two QBs in football?

Jones continues to be a non-story that we talk about every day.

I don’t see what his problem is, he will be collecting $14 million in the first 3 years. When he was traded to us from Chicago he was as happy as a pig in sh_t. I didn’t see him offering money back for his subpar performance in 2007, so he had one good year, thats waht he’s supposed to do for the money he is being paid.

Hank, I know you are negative about all this but at least get your facts straight. The Jets have TJ under contract for this year and next. He has no leverage. He cannot walk (unless it is to walk home with no dough).

The Jets have leverage. They can and likely will cut him before his next bonus is payment is due. Otherwise they have to pay him $3 mil upfront and two more in salary. There is no reason for them to accelerate any money to this year. Unless Shonn is a total bust or gets crippled, TJ will likely get to be cut and a FA before next year’s draft. But, TJ has no say in the matter.

BTW, after he is cut, I don’t think he will like what he finds about his market value either (nor would any 30+ RB).

So for folks on the Plaxico watch. Here’s yet another article that substantiates the claims, 1, that the city really wants him to do some time and it’s likely he will. And, 2, that he hasn’t really accepted responsibility for all this craziness.

This guy is one of my favorite players. But the risk is too big. Sign Matt Jones. Yes there’s a risk, but the risk is smaller and more common.

I wish that management would take care of the running back situation, one way or another. I hate when these things drag out. It helps no one.

Jones has never once complained about his contract, its all speculation, i’m sure he would like to restructure his deal, considering what the numbers look like next year.

Another point, running backs productivity goes down once a guy is in his 30′s, i say, let him skip the OTA’s and rest after 290 carries last year
