Just a quick post to note that newest TJB Hall of Fame inductee, Larry Grantham’s golf event to benefit the recovering alcoholics of Freedom House is coming up in mid-July

Larry Grantham will welcome other members of the 1968 Super Bowl-winning New York Jets, including Gerry Philbin, Emerson Boozer and John Elliott.

Other notable sports celebrities such as Gerry Cooney, Bart Oates and Bruce Harper will be joining event participants at a great day of golf for a great cause.

Joe Benigno of WFAN will be the emcee for dinner and Greg Buttle, former Jet and host of Jets Gameday on Jets Radio Network and 1050 ESPN radio, also will be in attendance.

If you can attend, we encourage you to do so, it’s for a great cause!

Link: How Much Left in the Tank?

by Bassett on June 30th, 2009 at 12:00 pm

The guys at Kotite’s Corner took a very interesting look at running backs across the league, and predicted how close they are to retirement. Using the base ‘retirement’ age of 65, they used some fancy math to come up with, in broad terms, how much gas is left in the tank for backs across the league, by using historical data … ok forget it, I’d rather let them explain.

It’s compelling, and even though Kotite’s Corner themselves don’t see the measurements as gospel, it proves some compelling evidence on why the team would be unwise to re-up Thomas Jones’ contract right now.

The AFC Wars: The East Edition

by Weeks on June 30th, 2009 at 10:28 am

The AFC East [is still on sale until Aug. 1, all inquiries must be heard by Roger Goodell] is beginning to heat up even more, like an egg on the sidewalk. The Fins linebacker, Akin Ayodele mentioned that there will be more “edge” to the Monday night game come October after the Rex Ryan vs. Channing Crowder’s bit and added how it was “immature” for a HC to fire back with words of his own.

“That’s the wrong person to get in a bickering war with, because he can talk all day — that’s Crowder,” Ayodele said. “If he’s going to be our voice, then we support him, understanding that I’ve been in the league a while, and I’ve just never seen a head coach get into a bickering war with a player. It was kind of immature if you’re a head coach.”

I don’t know if its because Miami won the division last season or because they are trying to keep up with the jabs but either way, Ayodele doesn’t know Ryan very well. From the beginning Ryan said he wasn’t going to take any crap and now Ayodele is just adding more fuel to the fire. Good to see that everyone is staying sharp but it is going to come down to who outplays who now with the AFC East becoming more competative, words are no longer going to serve as ammunition for the battle.

Now all we need is for T.O. to chime in and we’ll be good to go.

Film Room: He Had Two Feet Down

by Bassett on June 30th, 2009 at 10:01 am

Although we linked to this B-Roll footage a while back, it’s bears showing again. Mark Sanchez showed off his $50 million arm (and chest, uhh … thanks Boom) a few weeks ago for a charity.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XovKesMO3cU

Anyone else need a shower? Let’s hope that:

1) Sanchez works better with his receivers in the future
2) Boomer doesn’t remove articles of Mark Sanchez’s clothes EVER AGAIN

Thanks to John C. for sending this on.

News: Brandon Marshall Likely Staying Put in Denver

by Bassett on June 30th, 2009 at 9:30 am

Brandon_Marshall_WIDE918.jpg

Although it’s true that the Jets could use another wideout, don’t expect Brandon Marshall to come available any time soon, according to ESPN’s Bill Williamson of the AFC West Blog.

I talked to some people close to the situation Monday, and they said the Broncos will maintain their stance of keeping Marshall. The team still expects Marshall to show up for training camp.

The team still has no plans to trade Marshall … [and] … know they hold all the cards. If Marshall doesn’t show up in 2009, he won’t be paid. A prospective free agent in 2010, there is little chance Marshall will risk missing an entire season.

So, as I predicted, the Broncos are not letting the inmates run the asylum a second time. They do have more leverage in this case, and clearly the team isn’t up against a master media manipulating agent like Bus Cook either.

Williamson does go on to say that the team would never say never, but that basically it would take a first rounder and another pick to get the deal done. Marshall is a decent player, but the asking price is too high.

News: Burress to Face Stiff Penalty

by Bent on June 29th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

According to PFT and others, the latest buzz is that Commissioner Goodell is expected to suspend Plaxico Burress (and Mike Vick for what it’s worth) indefinitely.

Goodell is leaning toward suspending Burress indefinitely, and continuing the presently indefinite suspension of Vick…It looks like Burress won’t be playing much football until he puts the pending charges behind him.

Shall we move on to Plan B or Plan Wait-and-C?

Hat tip to ronnie…

News: Jets Keep On Waivering

by Bent on June 29th, 2009 at 7:38 pm

The Jets have picked up yet another ex-Giant on waivers, this time former Rutgers guard Mike Fladell.

Fladell is huge (6’7″, 334) and was once regarded as a potential mid-to-late round pick. From what I’ve seen of him, he is a powerful run blocker with the ability to pull. He was undrafted in 2008 and spent the year on the Giants practice squad.

Keep searching guys, you’ll find someone that makes up for the loss of Derrick Ward eventually. (Or maybe you won’t, but keep searching anyway…)

TJB Hijack: ESPN Mailbag

by Bassett on June 29th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

Here’s a quick chat hijack from our friends at ESPN.

Q: Danny in North Lauderdale, Fla., asks who will be starting quarterback for the New York Jets and is it necessarily the same person that gives them the best chance of winning on a weekly basis? (more…)

Inside Out: Bart Scott

by Bassett on June 29th, 2009 at 11:00 am

bartscott.jpgHeight: 6-2 Weight: 240
Age: 28 Born: August 18, 1980
College: Southern Illinois
Experience: 8th season

2008 Season – Bart Scott was an impact player for the Ravens in 2008 with 83 tackles, 5 passes defensed 1.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. Still, his numbers have declined steadily since his outstanding season in 2006 and it has been raised as a concern as to whether that trend will continue. Personally, I think that the number decline was in part due to the arrival of Haloti Ngata, who was able to stop more plays at the line in 2007 and 2008 than he did in his rookie season.

Strengths – Scott has good size and strength and Scott plays with an aggressive style which charges the players around him. Quick to react, Scott can change direction and move laterally well to avoid oncoming blocks to then sneak in and make the tackle. Scott good bursts of speed in short distances toward the outside to take away passing or running lanes on the perimeter. Scott is able to take on interior lead blockers and can get his pad level low enough to blow up to fullbacks before they get to daylight. Scott is gifted with excellent timing as a blitzer with good elusiveness to avoid contact at the line.
