Film Room: Marcellus Wiley on Mark Sanchez

by Bassett on June 1st, 2009 at 3:57 pm

In the old game of pretender/contender that ESPN likes to play, Marcellus Wiley thinks that the Jets are a ‘contender’ with Mark Sanchez. “Contender, he’s gonna start … any time a team moves us … he has to play.”

I still can’t believe that anyone but Clemens will start week 1- there’s no way Sanchez can get up to speed that fast. After looking at the sched, I would think that if the Jets get off to a poor start (1-3 or 0-4 is not impossible), we could see him against Miami or Buffalo. It would be one last bit of unfairness to KC, as the sched looks to be much easier after week 4.

a rookie with his first start monday night?
    thats crazy talk

KC has to do something special to beat out Sanchez is the feeling i get.
Ryan WANTS Sanchez to beat him out right but that might be too difficult. IMO if Sanchez is even close to KC he gets the start over Clemens.

from all the reporting i would say Clemens is fighting for the starting spot not the other way around

We’re hearing Clemens only has a slight edge so far and it’s just getting started. Clemens has years in the system and only has a slight lead? I have to believe that Sanchez will overtake him sooner than later. I’m rooting for both f them to play well, but I get the feeling that Sanchez will be the starter week one.

Sanchez spent 4 years at USC (one as a redshirted frosh). Before that, he spent 2 years at Mission Viejo High School, with QB guru/coach Bob Johnson. That’s 6 years in pro-style offenses (remember, KC’s best college season was his injury-shortened senior season in a spread offense). I have no doubt that Sanchez will know the playbook backwards and forwards by training camp. Then, it comes down to execution. Sure, KC is ahead (and he should be), but KC wasn’t exactly the second-coming of Montana when he started. So, I think the idea that KC is “way ahead” of Sanchez is false. Let’s see who runs the offense better in the pre-season games. Last year, Ratliff ran the offense the best, despite his lack of experience. So, I have every reason to believe that Sanchez can run the offense better come pre-season. As I keep on saying, I’d rather have Sanchez make his 1st NFL start than have KC make his 9th.

    Here’s food for thought:

Sports Illustrated, May 4: “With [Matthew] Stafford, I think you throw him in there right away. I think he’s lucky, the fact that he’s coming in with a new coaching staff. That’s a big advantage because basically he’s just like all the other veterans as far as learning this new system, learning the way their new head coach is going to approach things, learning his philosophy … I’m waiting for somebody to break that NFL rookie record for interceptions I set back in ’98. Hopefully Stafford will give it a good run. But I’ll say this, there’s no way I could have played as well as I did in my second year if I hadn’t played that first year.” — Peyton Manning, on the Kravitz and Eddie show on 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis, on whether the first pick in the 2009 draft should play as a rookie or observe.

I think Manning’s sentiments apply equally with Sanchez, except that Mark will have a much better team around him than either Peyton had or Stafford will have.

Based on SackDance’s vigorous lobbying for the Jets drafting “Matty Ice” last year, they would probably do well hiring him as a consultant.

    He was spot on.

One interesting unanswered question relating to this discussion is who did Brian Dabol (Mangini’s hire as the Jet’s quarterback coach, and now the Brown’s offensive coordinator) think was better?

I haven’t heard that the Browns asked for Clemens and were turned down. I suspect the Browns would very much want to trade one of their two high-priced quarterbacks (after their own competition contest plays out) and retain Ratliff as their number two.

They got a fair number of pieces for trading awat their #5, the first of which was cap relief.

A trade that probably made a lot of sense for both sides.

    Moyvore,

Thanks for the shout out. I thought Matty Ice would be good; I had no idea he’d put together the greatest (or second greatest after Marino) rookie season in NFL history. To be honest, I’m not as high on Sanchez as a prospect as I was with Matty Ice. But, I think Sanchez has loads of talent and, unlike with Matty, I have no issues with Sanchez’s accuracy…he’s very accurate. I just wish he had a little more college seasoning and was, at least, an inch taller!

Why did you have to go and say that? Now I’ll have to spend all afternoon censoring trolls.
