When asked about where Shonn Greene would fit into this offense, Rex Ryan gave some indication where Greene would be used, in the ‘closer’ role.
“If you are going to say, ‘Well, what quarter do you think is going to be Shonn Greene’s quarter?’ I’d say it’s the fourth. So when you’re ahead, just say, ‘Here you go.’ Everybody in the ballpark knows. ‘Here Shonn, jump on in there.’ Let him pound it.”
Exactly, why give the ball to a 30 year old running back who’s already had 20 carries and you need to spare for next week? Especially when there’s a younger player on the bench? The Giants have proven that a physical, between the tackles player can grind on a tired defense to good effect.
Rather than play prevent defense and a throwing keepaway offense in the fourth quarter, this seems like the right move for a team that is clearly going to be led by it’s defense.
I guess the key part is having a lead to hold onto in the fourth quarter …

Such an obvious smoke screen. Leon will get the ball in the fourth quarter (who will have the energy to chase him down after getting pounded by the O-line and Jones for the first three quarters, Derrick Ward comes to mind). Shonn will MAYBE get the ball with 4-5 minutes left and the Jets up by ten or more. Would anyone like to venture how many of these situations the Jets will be involved in this year?

I think after next year Leon and Greene can be a feared duo, one more so than Johnson and White, and even Williams and Stewart
If you ask me Greene has Brandon Jacob type of potential
-
I disagree, why would he be throwing out a smokescreen in June? Greene will see 5 to 10 carries in the fourth quarter in a perfect world.
-
No offense, but from what I’ve seen of Ryan, “smokescreen” isn’t in his vocabulary.
It seems as though he’s quite content in saying (repeatedly) “Here is what we are, here’s what we’re going to do, and good luck trying to stop us.”
He says they’re going to have fun, and so far, it seems as though that’s the case. Ditto on having a “swaggerlicious” defense, running the ball and sending messages to other teams. I mean, I guess he could be setting this up for an epic turn come September, but I don’t see that.
If he says Greene will be pounding the ball in the 4th quarter, then opponents better be buckling up their chinstraps and bracing for impact.

We will need to be winning the game to be able to “close”, hope they can score points, and keep the D off the field.

Nyckage –
I hope your right but lets not get ahead of ourselves and compare Shonn Greene @ 5’11″ 235 lbs to Brandon Jacobs @ 6’4 265 lbs. Those 5″ and 30lbs are big difference. Danny Woodhead @ 5’7″ 195 is closer to Thomas Jones in size (only 3″ shorter and 20lbs lighter) than Green is to Jacobs. So lets keep things in perspective.

Jets fans, I present to you……..
The War Machine….
I am so pumped to see this guy abuse defenders late in games.

Johnny Hector,
I think Jacobs is a great back, but his height counts against him. He takes way too many hits. 5’11″ and 235 might actually make an RB MORE of a battering ram than a guy who would take one in the gut from most NFL DTs. Bettis at 5’11″ 250 was the best “battering ram back” this decade. IMO, that’s perfect size and Shonn is only a biscuit away from that.

I can’t believe that anyone would EVER take a HC’s position in ANY sport at face value, especially when it comes to in-game tactics. So far, Ryan has been open about his philosophy and overall strategy, which is play defense, run the ball.
My projected breakdowns bet Jones, Washington and Greene:
1st half-12-7-0
2nd half-7-12-2
Think the Giants last year with Jacobs, Ward and Bradshaw -
I actually think (and hope) that Washington gets as many carries as Jones in the upcoming season.

My point is lets not compare Greene with “zero” NFL carries with what Jacobs has done with the Giants. Especially last year. He averaged 5 ypc and had 15 rushing tds. In fact those numbers are better then Bettis ever put up in a single season for his career. So it would be a more fair to compare Jacobs with Bettis rather than Greene to either of these back at this point.
-
Jacobs is a freak of nature at 6’4″ and 265lbs. He’s bigger than most linebackers and some defeinsive linemen,.
-
Johnny Hector,
My comment was limited to your size comment. Jacobs has been injured the past 2 seasons and will continue to get injured because of his size and running style. To me, he’s Christian Okoye again and will likely have as short (and brilliant) a career. Greene has a Bettis body type which is good for the tough interior running that is projected for him. Bettis, Shonn Greene, even Earl Campbell, were all 5-11, 235+. To me, that’s perfect “battering ram” size. I’m not saying he will be as good as 2 of the best RBs to ever play, I’m just saying that he has similar size.

I hope Shonn is half as good as Campbell buts last twice as long. My comments on Jacobs were in response to Nyckage’s post saying he’s sees Jacob’s like potential in Shonn. My point is lets see the man carry the ball in the NFL before we start comparing him to any star in the league. There are alot of backs in this league that have the perfect size to be a battering ram. But that does mean they’ll ever become one. To quote Chad Pennington “Potential means you haven’t done it yet.”

Dear Arthur,
To some extent anything that is obvious is a smokescreen for the sporadic exception.Dear Johnny-Hector,
I appreciate your stats…but I don’t think that they are so convincing. They don’t measure impact force delivery that the ball carrier gives. They don’t measure subtle twisting ability. They don’t measure state of mind.I agree with SackDance’s analysis of this.
Nobody who gained 1800 yards last year running into people in College is going to be stopped by the pros.
The pros are craftier and quicker…but not tougher.I do agree with you Johnny and you Sackdance that Jacobs or Campbell are better comparisions to Bettis…or Jim Taylor for that matter.
Shonn Greene is a Leroy Kelly,Walter Payton,Jim Brown type of back in terms of style.Success of that is another matter.

Thought that they should have done that with Lamont Jordan years ago.
